Genuine question, Magic. Are you anti-vaccine in general or just this one? If yes, why is that?

Just this one, because it's not about a vaccine anymore.

Magic, didn't you say that you were going to have to get the vaccine because of your girlfriend?

Yes, but now it doesn't stop you getting it what's the point (also a second consultant saved her from that medication, fuck the NHS etc).

You would do well to remove the subservient shackles you operate under and actually question things now and again - there is no data (other than manufactured SAGE wank) that suggests Omicron is going to cause a Tsunami of hospitalisations and deaths in properly vaccinated, let alone boosted, countries, it just doesn't exist.

They have not enough data to say that it won't so it depends on your risk appetite. If the hospitals are overrun, it's pretty hard to turn that around.

What value would the government gain from SAGE modelling a "all is ok" model? That's not their job.

I agree the data is far from complete, but what we do have is all pointing in the direction of things being fine, and thankfully to this point, the government here at least agree with that view - they are ignoring the SCIENCE, thankfully.

What value would the government gain from SAGE modelling a "all is ok" model? That's not their job.

What value does anyone gain from modelling something that has no chance of happening? It's absolutely pointless and you said as much yourself the other day.

We model for all kinds of shit (https://www.businessinsider.com/freedom-of-information-request-reveals-british-governments-plans-for-a-zombie-outbreak-2012-12) that isn't going to happen. Or, rather, that is hugely unlikely. Hugely unlikely things do happen and governments prepare for them.

Of course, I'd like to think there are plans in place for when an asteroid eventually comes our way again that don't just involve Bruce Willis and a massive drill, but crucially, those plans stay behind the scenes. In the case of this, this is stuff that SAGE are pulling together in response to something that is happening now, it's being deliberately released to the public, is forming scientific policy and is manifestly wrong.

I know I moan about our response a lot, but fair play to the government and scientific advisors for bringing this in.

People infected with Covid in England can stop self-isolating up to three days early if they test negative twice, it has been announced.

They will now be able to end quarantine after seven days instead of 10 by providing negative lateral flow results on day six and day seven.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid said it would minimise disruption caused by the rapid spread of the Omicron variant.

He said the change was based on the latest guidance from health experts.

Maybe, just maybe sense is winning over here. Meanwhile, in Europe...

Germany announced that from 28 December limits would return that restrict private gatherings to 10 people and nightclubs would close. Football matches from that date will also be played behind closed doors.

Meanwhile Portugal ordered bars and nightclubs to shut from 26 December, and made working from home obligatory from that date until 9 January. Outdoor gatherings will be limited to 10 people.

Bars and restaurants in Finland will have to close at 22:00 on 24 December, as the Nordic nation sees infections at a record level. For three weeks from 28 December, restaurants will have to close at 18:00 with limited seating. Travellers coming from the EU's border-free Schengen zone will have to show a negative Covid test.

I genuinely don't understand how Drakeford is worried enough about the virus to piss people off with further restrictions, but doesn't actually bring anything in that will make the blindest bit of difference. I mean, look at this shower of shit:

Groups of no more than six people will be allowed to meet in pubs, cinemas and restaurants in Wales from 26 December, the first minister has said.

And two metre social distancing rules are to return in public places, Mark Drakeford said.

Licensed premises will have to offer table service only, face masks will have to be worn and contact tracing details collected.

Outdoor events will be limited to 50, with 30 indoors.

Advice has been given to limit household mixing and use lateral flow tests beforehand, with a specific offence for having gatherings of more than 30 people.

Spectators at community sports matches will also be limited to 50 people.

If it's to be seen to be doing more than England (while using old and shit English measures) then fucking lol.

The level of nanny state in this Welsh stuff is staggering:

The Welsh government has urged people to take lateral flow tests before socialising, shopping or visiting people and not to go out if it is positive.

It is advising meeting outdoors where possible and to make sure indoor meetings are well ventilated.

People, it said, should leave at least a day between social events.

"A day between social events" I don't even.

My wife has a PCR test booked for this morning after a very faint positive line in the LFT. Shes feeling a lot better today, she was a bit rough yesterday and started to cough. We need to be careful as she's 28 weeks pregnant. My LFT was all clear. Hopefully its just a false positive, I don't think I'd need to isolate but it wouldn't be much fun over Christmas.

She got the positive from the PCR. She is feeling a lot better again today so hopefully over the worst of it all.

Feel bad for her as she has been working from home since Febuary 2020 and has barely gone out. I've been the complete opposite and managed to avoid it completely again. I dont need to isolate but advised to test every day.

Either the devolved governments are going to look like absolute geniuses in three weeks or they are going to look like absolute helmets there really is no middle ground here.

I think the one thing all the figures are missing out on is that there will be a massive amount of people who aren't willing to take a test and ruin their Christmas and haven't done so in the last ten days. I reckon the case load is substantially higher than already than all these models are thinking it is especially seeing as this strain does seem to cause less severe illness.

Official findings that Omicron may be less likely to result in serious illness than Delta offer a "glimmer of Christmas hope", the head of the UK Health Security Agency has said.

But Jenny Harries told the BBC it was too early to retract her statement that the variant was the most serious threat the UK had faced during the pandemic.

Calm down Scott Gemmill, I hadn't been on here for a month, so was reading through the rona thread.

Your one dimensional 'thick' 'moron' barbs at people is quite boring. At least get creative.

Prof Paul Hunter, professor in medicine at the University of East Anglia, told BBC Breakfast that in time people with Covid should be allowed to "go about their normal lives" as they would with a common cold.

"If the self-isolation rules are what's making the pain associated with Covid, then we need to do that perhaps sooner rather than later," he said.

He suggested this might be able to happen "once we're past Easter", depending on the effects of the disease at that time.

Prof Paul Hunter is a hero. Brings a tear to my eye.

On the whole staying home if you're ill (with anything, not just Covid) is in everyone's interests. It just shouldn't be law and it should be up to each of us what risks we want to take. For example, my kids don't go anywhere near a soft play in the winter because it's a fast-track to Norovirus. I'll skip a night out if I feel a bit ropey, etc. We all do this stuff all the time and I imagine most people with Covid would be happier in bed anyway.

Very true, but this sort of stuff being discussed on the BBC is a sea change and one that hopefully leads to the end of the threat of other bollocks.

My unvaccinated wife has tested positive for covid. Based on her symptoms, she's opted for the old school delta variant rather than the soft shite omicron.

Did you give it the big "I told you so" (Glory)? Or are you holding it back for the next argument (Strategy)?

Maybe Magic was right after all.

I see the park run has been banned in Wales. We should rescind their national rugby team until this bollocks stops.

Sky News headline : More than 500 children admitted to hospital with COVID this week

"The definition used to identify a hospital admission with COVID is that someone either tested positive for the virus in the 14 days before their admission or during their stay in hospital."

The media are just the worst.

With the way this is spreading, I'm not using rising hospital numbers as something to be concerned with.

There's nothing to be concerned about beyond the level of concern that existed already, this is just the boy who cried wolf on a national scale.

What needs to happen next is anyone who recommended we not open up in July and recommend we go harder with restrictions this time round should be banned from appearing in the media without that being made clear in lights. If they're actually formally working on the COVID response then that should be that too, P45 time.

The Queensland sun will lol covid out of town again.

Queensland’s contact tracers have drastically scaled back their efforts to identify exposure sites and are now focused primarily on threats to hospitals, aged care facilities and Indigenous communities.

As the state recorded 1158 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, Health Minister Yvette D’Ath announced the axing of the rule for interstate arrivals in Queensland to be tested on their fifth day.

It's strongly recommended that you get vaccinated against coronavirus (COVID-19) if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
