Why is it worth it? What about things that are permanent like the normal flu etc.? We could keep tier one lockdown forever (or just distancing and masks) and put a serious dent in those numbers every year.

We're back to peanut allergies again. I wonder if we'd all have to stay at home if peanuts sprouted wings.

This is way more contagious than flu, which is why it will overwhelm health services in a way flu doesn't if left unchecked.

Hypothetically then, if it didn't stand to overwhelm the health service (because they all just suffered and died at home like plague victims), would you accept the argument that an extra hundred thousand deaths (say) are worth it to prevent massive economic damage?

Problem being a large proportion of the vulnerable won’t be arsed about shielding and will want to just take their chances.

My gran was fobbing off the first lockdown and still milling about despite all of us asking her to be more sensible.

The younger generation don’t care, I suspect there’s a large section of the vulnerable that don’t care and there’s a mix of wet wipes/not bothered in the middle.

The PC thing to do is to try and save everyone. But that’s not happening. Should just let natural selection take its course. Ask everyone to be sensible, ask everyone to do distancing and masks and move on. Unfortunately, opening the clubs is an obvious problem that would be avoided.

I get the feeling Nicola sturgeon takes every death from this as a personal failure. As would any scientist advisor. And that is far more of a problem for me.

This is such a bollocks turn of phrase. Most people have been compliant which is why we managed to slow down the virus earlier in the year.

Natural selection means hospitals are unable to deal with things they should deal with in normal times. That PC paragraph is so fucking wrongheaded that it makes my head hurt.

Could we? I'm sure the mortgage companies, social housing providers and landlords would love that. How do we go about it? Are we going to tax everyone and clear the arrears? Or are we going to just pretend the arrears don't exist?

Neither is going to happen.

Fireworks are great if shit goes wrong.

My Dad used to host a big bonfire night and something would always fail.

Katherine wheels flying off the post they were nailed too was a common thing as were rockets changing trajectory as the milk bottle they were placed on would fall over. The biggest fail was one whipping round to the crowd and going inside a woman's cardigan.

Strangely enough, this is something I know a bit about. They certainly could test the sewerage for COVID (as many other countries do), but due to factors such as housing density, combined sewers (stormwater/wastewater in same pipes), and general complexity of old sewer systems, it would be very difficult to trace from sewerage testing.

Not to mention if there are loads of cases about, the positive results will tell you very little anyway.

The only thing complicating it is Christmas. I don't know what they're going to do about Christmas and I don't think they do either. Is it worth extending the subsequent lockdown by three months just so that you can get three days of Christmas in? I would say not, but my observations of people with kids suggest that for those with kids Christmas is basically the be all and end all of human existence, so I don't know.

Yevrah

Yep, if they're prepared to say we're open in four weeks time when the deaths will be far higher than anything we've seen so far then we wouldn't have locked down in the first place.

Apparently police had bottles thrown at them in the next town along earlier in the week when they tried to break up a similar gathering (this is suburban Surrey). Lockdown is creating this dreadful situation whereby there are no honest citizens out and about anywhere and the human sewage run riot in the hole that is left.

Yes lockdown is the problem there.

I never had a great arm compared to other cricketers, but if there's one thing I've learned from watching office rounders (not my office, I hasten to add) it is that most people are dangerously mal-co-ordinated when it comes to catching and throwing, to a far greater degree than I'd imagined. I would let women off the hook as they don't understand sport or why you would try to catch or throw a ball in the first place, but the men are just as bad, with their pansy custard arms and reacting to a flying ball once it's already flown over their heads. What have they been doing all their lives? If we were all stuck on a desert island and the only available weaponry was oranges and grapefruits, I'd be like the Terminator.

I went to Argos at a the local retail park yesterday and found the same. Barely any parking spaces. Massive queues for Home Bargains. The only change was that DFS was shut (which is always empty anyway) and Argos are bringing your shit to the door.

There's so much 'bubbling' and 'childcare support' going on as well. People are just carrying on as normal. Operation 'Shield the Vulnerable and let the rest of us crack on' is a go.

That operation may need a snappier name. I'm recommending 'Operation Club Doors', but I'm open to suggestions.

I'm repeating myself here, but fuck it: The rules at the moment are that Spikey, Ian and Jimmy can't meet up for a piss up because Ian might go round his nans and pass it on to her (the prick). In the first lockdown, the first step was to stop Ian going to see his nan (the prick) and it made absolute sense.

In this lockdown, they've only applied that in a blanket sense and it makes no sense. There is a clear difference in risk between me, Jimmy and Ian dying from Covid and Ians Nan dying from Covid and yet... no difference in restrictions. Mental.

Until Ians dickhead Nan is expected to lookafter herself, I don't really see why anyone else should be arsed about doing so.

If it were the case that only the obviously vulnerable could get sick enough to need hospital or ITU care then your argument would make sense. But that isn't the case. Even if it's only a relatively small proportion of the seemingly healthy who get significantly unwell, if you're getting huge numbers of cases then there will still be enough sickies to overwhelm hospitals over winter.

No matter how much people are told, they really don't seem to get how badly overstretched hospitals are in winter.

She had Pneumonia after the Flu (maybe Covid), but that didn't appear on the shielding list and she didn't get a letter. She did talk to her employer about it but no dice. She had to work. As far as I'm concerned she should have been shielding and should be this time too.

What the fuck is this Danish mink-human coronavirus business?

Shindig
08-11-2020, 11:05 PM
Minks were infected following exposure from infected humans. Minks can act as a reservoir of SARS-CoV-2, passing the virus between them, and pose a risk for virus spill-over from mink to humans. People can then transmit this virus within the human population. Additionally, spill-back (human to mink transmission) can occur. It remains a concern when any animal virus spills in to the human population, or when an animal population could contribute to amplifying and spreading a virus affecting humans. As viruses move between human and animal populations, genetic modifications in the virus can occur. These changes can be identified through whole genome sequencing, and when found, experiments can study the possible implications of these changes on the disease in humans.

I'm guessing they don't want some kind of vicious mink on human on mink cycle. Or some super strain to come out of it.

I know you said potentially but it’s look like teachers and other school staff aren’t being offered it early. When someone asked why they weren’t on the list of early receivers, it caused the biggest bumbleathon in Boris’ long history of them.

I can see why teachers would get it earlier than me, but I'm not sure they should necessarily get it before the millions of old duffers who might actually die of it.

He will get bullied into another U-turn B-Turn you'd hope. If it's true that Schools, colleges and Universities are what ramped up the 2nd wave, then teachers are in high risk environments with no PPE (well, only masks).

They shouldn't be top of the last, no, but they should be on the list somewhere.

The only problem with [only] giving it to the vulnerable [elderly] is that if you want to mass sterilise the population it's not much point focusing on that lot.

I've said too much.

You can just imagine the sort of under-40s that will want vaccinated.

Why? I'm getting the Flu jab this year. It didn't kill me, but I never want to feel like I did in January ever again. 2 weeks of misery avoided for what, £20? I don't much fancy having covid either. I enjoy the simple things in life like the taste of food and not having the heart of a 60 year old.

I mean the vaccine is still a little away despite yesterdays news. If it was approved, then I'd get it. I can't imagine the younger population will see much of it this year anyway.

Matt Hancock saying they're ready for the roll-out of a vaccine.

Given how well the WORLD BEATING track and trace system went I assume he means a few Tory MPs have got sons with a driving license and a few van hires ready to go.

I wasn't aware until Grandpa Joe said it yesterday that Americans say vuk-SEEN (or maybe just he does). They should get it last for that reason alone.

The NHS are being put in charge of it apparently and they've experience with mass vaccination runs (albeit not on this scale), so as long as they don't get Mark Francois wife in to oversee it (fair and open competition permitting obvs) we should be golden.

Don't you badmouth Mark Francois or his wife, he survived the Somme for you.

Which they clearly are. The spike literally started in September when the schools went back.
