Apparently he is concerned the shop he manages (not the owner) would struggle at short notice so rejected the plastic surgery appointment this morning in favour of 'my own plan' which is take anti biotics until Sunday then go back and ask for plastic surgery if it hasn't improved. This seems risky not least because he previously said it was improving a week ago when he was limping into a cinema with pus leaking out of it, a week after the initial complaints.

So I got a call on my work phone this morning that I didn't recognise and said it was from Kettering. I couldn't have told you Kettering and Corby are local to each other so just binned it as spam and thought no further of it. Then got another message asking me to book my COVID jab so I googled the number that called me and sure enough it's the same medical centre who'd messaged me. I'd messaged them via their website but they've probably not read it yet.

So they follow up with another text reassuring me (by the wrong name) that this is definitely for me. So I text them back and they respond (presumably automated) with a link to reply so I click that. It starts "Hi Matthew", which wasn't a strong opening and then it wanted me to add this fella's date of birth to proceed so that's a no go.

Fuck it, I think, I'll just call them.

"You are number...... 7..... in the call queue."

Nope.

Increasingly looks like it'll be easier to just assume this fella's identity. Do we already have a member called Matthew or will I be free to switch over?

They're back.

About 1.3 million people in the UK have "long Covid", symptoms lasting more than four weeks after an initial infection, an Office for National Statistics survey suggests... The survey asked nearly 352,000 people to record their own symptoms... In line with previous analyses, about 20% said their symptoms meant their ability to do day-to-day activities had been limited a lot.

And those most likely to have long Covid are:

women

That basically the sort of people making these decisions - scientists, civil servants, politicians - would sooner do literally everything else than shut the borders, because 1) it's just not something they could ever contemplate; and 2) if they managed to do it then people might expect them to keep some of the infrastructure/restrictions in place in the longer term.

Again though that’s the misconception that so many have, that vaccines or being a positive case have any bearing on you catching it. Completely false (someone please tell my butcher). It hugely reduces the chances of being seriously ill, not reduces the chance of testing positive.

I don't doubt that. Obviously I'm aware you can be fully vaccinated and still catch it. That is exactly what happened to me at the beginning of December. To catch the same illness twice in the space of six weeks is a bit of a piss take though. Different variants, maybe?

Our alternative policy scenarios, including more rapid scale-up of boosters to all who have been previously vaccinated, increasing mask use to 80%, and vaccinating the partially hesitant, have only a small impact on the trajectory over the next 4 months. The speed of the epidemic is so fast that policy interventions will have little impact. In previous waves, the control strategy has been to control infection and thus reduce hospitalization and death. Given that there is little prospect of controlling infection, strategies need to focus on reducing harm in the vulnerable and minimizing disruption.

Can we please trust SCIENCE on this one?

Some of these stories of people being fined for breaches of lockdown [in the context of these Downing Street REVELATIONS] really paint a worrying picture of society. Of how easy it is for the veneer of a free, civil society to be undermined by a populace who seem to secretly crave authoritarianism [the curtain twitchers who presumably dobbed the offenders in, the survey folk hellbent on restrictions forever] and of a police force all to happy to oblige.

To borrow the language of Boydy, anyone who reported a breach of covid rules should probably be at the front of the queue for the gulag/wall treatment.

We're yet to see how that actually works, but last I checked protests were still alive and (in some cases annoyingly) well.

This government has been a shambles on many levels and is clearly led by an habitual liar, but on COVID (and while far from perfect) they've done a better job than most other countries in the World in letting us get on with things once the vaccines were deployed.

I think there's a general trend in the western right (and maybe left, tbh, where they're in power) towards authoritarianism at the moment. Boris Johnson isn't a natural dictator, he's the opposite, but once in power he's in an environment where he doesn't see why he should compromise on anything, and is being barracked in that direction from the back benches too. The options are soppy twats like Biden who will never get anything done, or vicious bastards who will get the wrong things done.

The Blair type of strong centrist just isn't on the table anymore, due to the cultural polarisation, infantilisation and everything else that the internet has ushered in.

On Saturday, the Pacific island of Tonga was hit by a tsunami.

Now, officials are worried that the international response could bring coronavirus to the Covid-free nation.

Significant damage has been reported on the island, after the eruption of a volcano led to the emergency. But it's unclear how bad things are, as the disaster has affected communications.

"We don't want to bring in another wave - a tsunami of Covid-19," a Tonga official tells the Reuters news agency.

Curtis Tu'ihalangingie, Tonga's deputy head of mission in Australia, is appealing for patience while priorities for aid are decided.

Aid sent to Tonga will need to be quarantined, and foreign personnel will likely not be allowed to leave aircraft, he says

There is a hint of too big to fail about them. I don't know how they think they can stop Omicron spreading like mad, though.

China have donned the west mad over the last few decades, but the last couple of years they've absolutely taken the piss. They've spent decades hoarding billions upon billions of dollars, then, as the US start printing money to deal with the Chinese made Pandemic, they dump the lot back into circulation, triggering massive inflation and buy all their gold on the cheap. Wake up sheeple.

They've collapsed multiple times in history and will collapse again, particularly if they continue on their current path towards more ethno-authoritarian government. Ultimately all empires need their bourgeoisie/elites to make them the money that pays for everything, and elites like to have freedom to enjoy their status. In the long run that won't work alongside the jackhammer approach of the CCP.

Xi is a particularly monstrous tyrannical figure, probably the worst since Mao. Once he dies/is overthrown you'll see them realise they've fucked it and start inching back the other way. They have a lot of economic influence worldwide (particularly in Africa) but basically zero cultural influence, which counts for quite a lot.

Its economy will slow down/crash and it is still a long, long way off per capita economic parity with proper countries; but China is a four-thousand year old civilisation state, and its people aren't going to start clamouring for democracy any time soon just because that was what happened when European countries reached a certain level of development. Fortunately for them, Europe is clown town and America is sat in the garage with the car running, so they can just wait another thirty years for the ball to pop out rather than forcing anything, although it might be worth having a nibble at Taiwan to test the waters at some point.

Xi will die peacefully in his bed surrounded by loved ones.

The Chinese adore Grandpa Xi.

China's (and over Poverty stricken nations) main brainwave was becoming the production capital of the world. If they go pop, what do we do? Good luck replacing that supply chain with a first world, health & safety, living wage, bank holiday, union rep, VAT, mandatory pension society.

Great thread with some examples of things the general public were fined for during lockdowns, in context of Boris's continued wriggling.

The 66 year old man being fined for meeting up at his allotments really got me. No matter how much of an 'unknown' the disease may have been, the fact that we were all banned from meeting outside at one point is genuinely insane.

Dunno if I put it on here, but that thread/story about the Scottish GP vaccinator detailing his breach of the rules when he hugged a recently bereaved woman threw into stark contrast the absolute madness and inhumanity of it all. There was a guy (doctor) who the police admonished for going round to his parents house to unsuccessfully administer CPR on his dying father. They then denied his sister access to the house to see her dead dad. I know you won't agree but the police (and those who enable them through snitching) are genuinely a malevolent force fundamentally opposed to free society.

Saw this (https://raw.githubusercontent.com/tskir/england-coronavirus-excess-deaths/main/excess.png) yesterday. Even with loads of cases this winter, total deaths in over 65's below expected.

I'd say this is why restrictions are getting dropped early but we all know it's Boris trying to save his arse. Requirements to even test and isolate will be abolished soon enough too I reckon.
