As someone who has been deploying the 'little and often' approach to panic buying, I'm pretty sure the supply chain is pretty resilient for all items except paracetomol.

Not sure about Ireland but it can't be too different. The only threat is complete thickos who think this will result in a year long ruckus, rather than a possible 2-4 weeks of needing to stay indoors for public health reasons.

I got 200 paracetamol in the post today. The doctor prescribed my Da 1000 after his last operation so they sent me up some.

The language these people are using is insane.
Catch what and how? What in the fuck is he talking about?

I mean, I think I have intrinsic trust in the guy because he's the chief medical officer but I don't quite get what he's on about. Is this upswing inevitable?

In my pea brain I'm thinking why can't we just shut everything down now and contain the cases purely by having zero contact with each other. Or is that just impossible? I can't help but think there's something sinister going on.

All the old and the sick will die because no one can work, not from coronavirus, but from all the other things the army of doctors, nurses and care assistants keep at bay on a daily basis (starvation etc) so how exactly do you shut down everything?

By the time I make it to the supermarket again all I'm going to be left with is Fray Bentos pies.

The theory goes that since its spread is inevitable, delaying the severe action will lead to a peak of x as opposed to 2x, 5x or 10x.

Since no one else is taking this approach (of major European countries), I guess we have to hope that our scientists don theirs on a scale not seen since we made those cheat suits for the skeleton bob.

The theory goes that since its spread is inevitable, delaying the severe action will lead to a peak of x as opposed to 2x, 5x or 10x.

And this is the bit I can't join the dots on, and as you've said, how does doing nothing lead to a peak of only x?

The only thing that came close to explaining it was that if you ask people to stay indoors for weeks they'll get bored and stop doing it, but they're not doing that now, so unless he's suggesting that the fit of boredom will lead to people pulling a Rudy Gobert en masse, it makes no sense - I watched and listened and I still don't understand.

I'm not saying shut everything as I appreciate a balance needs to be struck to keep society going, but I don't need to work in an office and my company aren't looking likely to force me not to until the government advice suggests I shouldn't, so why don't they take me and presumably millions of people like me out of the equation, with minimal impact?

If peak is May and that peak is 13 million people infected, I sure as shit won't be coming into the office at that point, whatever the advice is.

Our Chancellor (read: PM) has already recommended reducing all social contact to a minimum and also cancel all family events. They're announcing new measures tomorrow. People are undergoing mandatory "health checks" when crossing the border from Italy, but I can't help but think that with the amount of cross-border traffic going on between Austria and Italy, we must have thousands of undetected cases by now.

There's an "itk"-rumour doing the rounds on social media around here that the government is planning to implement a 7pm-7am curfew from next week. Obviously those kinds of things need to be taken with a grain of salt, but still, sounds quite bizarre.

Our department head still thinks that people are overreacting and that it's basically a new form of flu and not that much to worry about. Meanwhile the two CEOs have decided to clear out several departments and send them home. Since I'm in customer care we're probably the last ones to go. :moop:

The supermarkets round here are still quite well-stocked, though.

I did think the 5-10k estimate earlier was low - the fact that I've now lost count of the number of famous people who have it shows how utterly rife it is.

They've got the best access to medical care so it stands to reason they'll find out before anyone else, but I don't know of a single person who knows someone's who's been tested, let alone has it. The closest is the chap at work who is now back from Italy and is self isolating.

Watching Newsnight, and I've come to the conclusion that this is batshit. The whole thing appears to stem around successfully gaming the public, while simultaneously telling them up front that that's what you're going to do, but not telling them what the rules of the game will be. Delaying things so you can smooth the impact out and build immunity also makes perfect sense, but other than telling people to self isolate if they feel symptoms (without telling them how they'll pay their bills if they do) we've done nothing to delay it.

The Italian numbers may be exaggerated vs. anywhere else due to them being ambushed by it, but we're going to post some formidable numbers over the coming weeks if we carry on down this path and if people don't have faith in the plan already, they sure as shit won't when they're having to bury granny in the garden. At which point the whole plan falls apart as we'll see the same nutjob response to people's daily business that we've seen recently with their shopping habits and it'll be carnage.

The role of government in this should be to manage the people and manage the virus, both are equally important and we're seemingly fisting both.

1. Trade intraday using a CFD. Short against whoever sounds the most fucked that day according to the news. Or you could pick any index blindfolded tbh. Cash in before the days out. Either withdraw all funds or rinse and repeat over following days/weeks.
2. ???
3. Profit!

Obviously be careful and there are sessions when it will rebound (although these are becoming fewer and smaller). Sell at the top of a peak rather than base of a dip. Always use a stop loss and only invest what you can afford to lose, because if it starts going the other way you need a steady hand and not be trading out because the red figure is intimidating.

Warnings aside, it's genuine free money unless you're a bit slow.

Don't think I'm even going to bother to take the pre-schooler as she has a runny nose (like all kids) and the boss there will be in full hazmat mode by now. The school age ones are more of gamble, one is fine, one has a penchant for coughing, but has done her whole life. I'm screwed because I've had a runny nose for 38 years.

Croatia now doing self isolation for 14 days for people coming in. Which is great because the Holiday can still technically go ahead, so the insurance won't pay out. Fuck sake.

We've been told by the travel company that only if the FCO specifically advises against travel to Portugal will they refund. Otherwise, we are simply 'disinclined to travel'. I can take £400 hit if I have to, but a lot of people surely can't.

This is super dangerous and only do it if you feel confident. You're catching a falling knife.

I'd say buy if you fancy a stock e.g. Amazon, Google, Microsoft and they're at a bit of a discount.

The mrs has called the insurance company and they're saying they will deal with things on a 'case by case basis within 28 days of travel'. Nice little non-answer.

That leaves claiming it back through the Credit Card company (if you paid any on a credit card, which we paid the last £200 thankfully) but I reckon they'll slam the door shut on that somehow too.

"Do not just let this fire burn" - that's what World Health Organization director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned governments at the WHO daily press conference.

He urged countries to “find, isolate, test and treat every case to break the chains of transmission”. Every case found reduced the risk of spread, he said.

More than 132,000 cases have been reported from 123 countries, and 5,000 people have died.

A new fund has been created that individuals and non-governmental organisations and businesses can contribute to for medical supplies and funding.

The WHO reiterated that "every person on the planet" should know the signs and symptoms of coronavirus - fever, dry cough and a sore threat, as well as difficulty breathing for some people.

Found Ted Ross' updates. Make you right Jim, this contradicts significantly what we're doing. I got the impression yesterday we won't even be testing people for much longer.

They all look at me like a complete weirdo but I stand by it being a good bit.

Those Italy numbers are formidable.

If they haven't stemmed it and that death rate continues to grow like that they're going to have 100,000 dead from this by early April.

Range of allowed predictions strikes me as too low here. Plenty experts seem to think it'll be over 50% of people in most countries.

My colleague (who is nice, but loves a conspiracy theory) reckons the nature of our response is down to Dominic Cummings wanting to kill off a chunk of the population.

I asked him why the Chief Medical Officer etc would listen to Dominic Cummings on these matters, but he just said it again.

I'm not into conspiracy theories and I sure as shit don't buy that one, but something about this approach doesn't sit comfortably.

And as I'm typing that I've just had a text from my GP's saying:

If you have a routine appointment today or in the near future PLEASE DO NOT COME IN, we've suspended all face to face appointments. If you have one booked you will receive a phone call on the day instead

Unless there's been an outbreak there, which there very well may have been, how the hell does that fit in with the government advice from yesterday?

Jimmy Floyd
13-03-2020, 06:25 PM
As far as I can see, everyone is ignoring the government advice and shutting down anyway. Even at my work, the most backward industry going, the MD came round at the end of the day enquiring about people's capacity to work from home should they need to. The old bag in shipping snapped a firm 'No! My team comes into the office!' at him, and he told her to fuck off in front of everyone. That was fun.

Personally I think the best thing the government could be doing right now is paying all the streaming services to open everything up for free, whacking a load of great old stuff on the BBC channels and saying stay indoors everybody.

No signs of school closing, we just have to get the kids to actually wash their hands, pretty sure they had an assembly to show them how:|. In better news though, classrooms all now have soap in them by the sinks and there is even hushed talk that the Y2 boys toilet sinks might be fixed as only one out of four has worked for about a year now. There has however been an acorn on the staff toilet floor for over a week now, which shows just how well they're cleaned each evening.

I think we would, yes. I'm kind of responsible for these decisions at my club and because we're in off season I have happily hidden behind 'I will continue to monitor government advice and keep you updated', but if we were in season I think everyone would be carrying on and I'd be sitting on my hands wondering whether to be the party pooper. Two days ago we had a record turnout at winter training and 15 blokes to the pub afterwards.

Assuming you're involved in some kind of work involving selling objects (like I am), and the customer base is blue collar, I think it'll need an actual government ban including enforcement before anything happens. I think my lot have only been rocked into action because our 76 year old vice president (far from the oldest at the company) has self isolated because his wife is on dialysis and this could finish her off.

I work in a subsidiary of a large company and we took the decision locally today to stop all forms of non-essential meetings/visits where travel is involved, largely to stop key people (Branch Managers mostly) all being in the same confined place at the same time and giving it to each other. We don't have many branches and if one or two of the larger ones were to go down we'd be in the shit from a generating enough funds to keep paying sick/isolated people perspective.

Probably the most surreal conversation I've ever participated in at work.

Bit of supply, bit of manufacture. But yes, I reckon nothing short of legal obligation will make them do anything. To the white van man section of our customers it's something happening on the news, the rest are the second home brigade who will still be redoing the conservatory when the bombs are falling. Our national sales guy is driving back and forth across the country for various things (Newport to Sevenoaks on Monday) and my flu-ridden spluttering MD was happily planning to go to London for a meeting with a customer before they banned anyone coming to their offices.
