I think it's justified. Governments don't pay attention to anything truly peaceful. I'm not necessarily pro-XR, but I'm pro doing what it takes to get results.

My problem is mainly due to them wasting the time of our emergency services and targeting the working class' ability to get to and from work. They need to be targeting State MPs and Adani.

It wont stop me voting greens but the people in Brisbane at least wont be stopping any new mines being built.

Edit: Just now a bloke has chained himself to a busy railway line.

A few years ago, our council slapped a load of solar panels on the the council housing around (and including) my parents' place. I'm kind of surprised that hasn't become more of a thing with new builds.

Giggles

You have to put them on all new builds here.

John

Yep, I don't think I've seen a new build house without a solar panel in a long time. The roof of the church near me was rebuilt a couple of years ago and even that is covered in solar panels now.

Spikey M

My sister in law has just bought a new build and I'm pretty sure there's no solar panels on it.

There's new builds springing up on every available blade of grass here and I don't think I've seen solar panels on any of them, actually.

And this is the issue, it's mostly ill thought out token gesture shit. To actually stop the impact it would take a fundamentally, properly fucking fundamental, change to the way we live and very few are actually prepared to do that.

There's also no chance the 2nd/3rd World will get anywhere near it either as they'll just see it as the established order keeping themselves ahead. Think when GS was moaning about Man Utd's inherent advantage over Liverpool because their 90s success coincided with the Premier League.

You say we have to change our lives, but it's actually just x amount of businesses (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/oct/09/revealed-20-firms-third-carbon-emissions) polluting for fun in an economic vacuum. If we can get rid of fossil fuels then we don't have to alter a thing.

So these comic book fiends are up in arms about Martin Scorsese not liking their little nerdfics.

One such fiend posted a facebook status today to the tune of "Oh... am I really going to take film nuance advice from a guy who let a literal rat run across the screen at the end of Departed?!"

to which I honestly thought hey wait I've seen that movie like 50 times what is he talking about? Then saw all of these fucking petitions to get the rat removed and all of this shit.

Imagine that. Martin Scorsese, not someone whose advice you take w/r/t film.... because he doesn't enjoy your comic book movies?

I'm just.....

niko_cee
21-10-2019, 08:53 AM
Well, if a person's frame of reference for a Scorsese film is The Departed then that probably tells you all you need to know about them.

bruhnaldo
21-10-2019, 02:56 PM
But that's half of it. The only reason this guy brought that up is because he probably googled Martin Scorsese and saw people complaining about said rat and thought it was some sort of widely accepted commentary as opposed to a much smaller group of pedantic losers trying to ruin a perfectly good film with their own (extraordinary ironic) snobbery.

Imagine cinema snobbing off The Departed because you thought a rat was too IN YOUR FACE just so you can in turn call Martin Scorsese himself a cinema snob because he thinks comic book movies are trash.

You've literally suspended disbelief and logic for what, 48 hours just so you can cheer on CaPtAiN aMeRiCa but FUCK a scene where a rat slowly crawls across a picturesque frame of the Massachusetts State Building which, even if not exactly subtle, probably speaks louder in 5 seconds than all 48 fucking hours of ha durr "i LoVe YoU fIvE tHOuSaNd" bullshit!

Superhero movies are the worst social phenomenon of the last decade or so. They used to come out like once every few years and you could deal with it. Now it’s all Hollywood produces. There’s nothing good about them. I assume there’s a similar explanation for why WWE is popular, but I’m not sure what that is

WWE is more popular in older age groups but mainly because it's bad not because wrestling is just about nostalgia. Marvel films are popular because someone already did the hard work, it's multiple decades of established characters with existing storylines. All they had to do was find a few good looking people to play everyone, make them sufficiently appealing to the action film crowd, and keep cranking them out. It's easy money compared to making something original.

I mean..when I was a little kid I used to play with the action figures and watch the cartoons.

My cousin and I had a bunch of them (okay I had like 5 but he had a bunch of them) so many summer days were spent concocting complex story lines and scenarios for our assortment of heroes and villains.

That, as well as going outside and pretending to be said superheroes in the same way.

So for me that would've been the nostalgia factor personally but idk, after the first Avengers movie I had no interest whatsoever and a passing interest prior.

My cousin, however, is ashamed of this fault in me, though I did really enjoy the Deadpool movies.

My 2yo daughter is obsessed with something I’m not really keen on... Frozen.

Sigh. I understand it could be worse but when you’ve gone from daily viewings on an awesome Spider-Man movie and constantly requests of “I want Biggie Smalls” in the car, changing that to Frozen and “the Forever song” is pretty grim.

It isn't about proving anything. The questions they ask when you take in the certificate are all about what she did for a living and how many siblings she had. It's about keeping family records up to date, but they're well aware nobody would bother their arse with that stuff if they didn't have to so they make the form you get at the end a legal requiremenet for the funeral directors to collect the body from the hospital.

I know this isn't what they're doing here, but they absolutely will be looking into every death to make sure it's legitimate. There are are a lot of people who could benefit from being officially dead.

In my last job we'd have an offenders spouse lie about them being dead at least once a week. Dreams. I stop smoking weed around the last week of November and my dreams have been getting steadily more fucked.

I've played and scored for Liverpool, I've been stood up by my mates mum who I hadn't seen since I was a teenager, I stole a pair of shoes that were under a steel gate, I've free fallen from the sky, waking up before I've splattered and I've murdered a faceless character just this last week or so alone. I've never been one to really remember dreams but they are so real at the moment that they are really freaking me out. :(

Last night I dreamt Ellie had tried to escape out the window and as I tried to stop her falling she used my arm to scale the roof. I then go on the roof to get her but was met by loads of evil cats, dangerous and scraggy looking. I had to lash out at them and they would pop and vanish but still couldn't find her. This seemed to last an age but was so real it was horrible, quite a lot of black cats so the similarity was confusing. I couldn't find her but eventually woke up with her perched on my chair as norm.

Pepe
31-12-2019, 03:37 PM
Despite having been physiologically validated for approximately
four decades, the neurobiology of lucid dreaming is still incompletely
characterized. Most studies conducted to date have relied on small
sample sizes, which limits the generalizability of the findings. Not
surprisingly, the results of such underpowered studies are not consistent:
almost every EEG study reports changes in spectral power in a
different frequency band or brain area. Neuroimaging data on lucid
dreaming is even sparser. Currently, there is only one fMRI study
contrasting lucid and non-lucid REM sleep and it is a case study.
Nevertheless, the results of this study converge with MRI studies that
have evaluated individual differences in lucid dreaming frequency.
Together, this preliminary evidence suggests that regions of anterior
prefrontal, parietal and temporal cortex are involved in lucid dreaming.
The involvement of these brain regions in metacognitive processes
during the waking state is also in line with these findings.

You can definitely control your dreams mate.

There is some way between that and living your made-up dream reality like Inception. Why not just dose yourself up and sleep twenty-three hours a day if you can do that?

General anaesthesia isn't sleep, and I think that's the kind of sedation you'd need to stay asleep 23 hours a day. I don't think people who are anaesthetised dream at all but I might be wrong.

Pepe
31-12-2019, 03:43 PM
There is some way between that and living your made-up dream reality like Inception. Why not just dose yourself up and sleep twenty-three hours a day if you can do that?

Apprently that's the goal:

A primary goal is to develop reliable strategies for making lucid
dreaming more accessible. As reviewed above, several studies have
explored methods for non-invasive electrical stimulation of the brain as
well as pharmacological approaches to lucid dream induction.
Electrical stimulation of prefrontal brain areas has resulted in
statistically significant but weak increases of dream “insight” ratings,
but so far it has not resulted in significant increases in the frequency of
lucid dreams. Currently it remains too early to tell how effective (if at
all) electrical stimulation of the frontal cortex, or other brain areas,
could be for lucid dream induction...

One of my most feckless and stupid friends visited me in Edinburgh when I briefly lived there. We came back pissed at like 3am, and cus Edinburgh is weird there was only one place on just-eat delivering, and it was £20 minimum. I went straight to bed, refusing to get in on food cus most of the reviews were saying how rank it was, so he just ordered a huge pizza and some chicken and chips for himself. He fell asleep, and the takeaway driver succeeded only in waking up my flatmate who blearily dumped the food next to my mate's carcass on the sofa. The pizza was so nasty that my mate managed about half a slice the next morning before chucking the lot away. And I've seen this cunt eat some nasty stuff.

Anyway, end up going out the next day. Stagger into the living room at 11am to see this dickhead sleeping next to another fucking 14 inch meat feast and soggy chicken and chips, completely untouched. My flatmate was too concerned for my mate's welfare to be pissed off. "Man, this guy has problems", from the guy who ate lasagna after 5 days sitting on work surface without even any clingfilm on it.

I had a similar experience in Ipswich, but it was based on proximity rather than Just Eats failings. I was away training people for my last job and the only shops nearby were a Polish off licence, which shorted me for beer and crisps, and a kebab shop, which provided a Kebab so poor that I don't think anybody working there xhas ever actually eaten one.

It had a burger bun instead of a pitta / wrap, the meat was fished from a tub, rather than cut from a spit and the only 'salad' was lettuce. He then poured on 'chilli sauce' that was very clearly actually water.

And it's always "mate". Muhfucka you are from CONNECTICUT and your family's heritage is PORTUGUESE.

Never heard that here.

I’ve definitely heard of the onion bag as the net before but nowhere near enough that it would be regarded as common.

I have, although it's a very old term that's been consigned to history. You know what's difficult? Telling a three year old 'fucking idiot' is not a polite thing to call someone. The nephew's started doing it and, for him to understand why it's bad would require giving him too much knowledge in the first place. No context or anything, it's just a thing he'll say.

Also, it's funny as fuck. :D

Perhaps it's an Irish thing cause upon searching most relate back to Tommy Smyth, who would very well likely be the source of inspiration for my asshole friend's new vocabulary.

Ignore Mahow, 'onion bag' is a very famous/common parlance phrase.

It is, but has it ever been used in a non-jokey/ironic way?

In other football parlance gone wrong annoyance news, am I alone in thinking that the dominos advert that talks about putting it in the 'top bins' is an affront? Top bin surely? I may have moaned about this before.

Agreed but asking Americans to pick up on irony is a lost cause.

edit: No, the phrase is definitely top bins.

I'm pretty sure 'top bins' is the modern bantard version of the original.

Either singular or plural, it sounds like some bollocks ‘Freddie’ Flintoff made up last week.

Apparently this is more topical than I imagined as 'top bin' (and top bins) was (were), apparently (according to Soccer AM twitter at least) added to the OED last week.

“Either of the top corners of the goal; (also) a goal scored by kicking the ball into either of the top corners.”

The adjective form - ‘top bins’ - is also described as “in the top corner of the goal”.

I can't find the video anymore but when 'Soccer' first broke through in the States and some commentator said that 'he blasted it into the upper 90' is burnt into my brain. Upper 90? It just makes so little sense as a way of describing the goal.

This is very niche but Ken Early of Second Captains doing 'Champions League Weekly' style dubbings of Egyptian Commentary of Salah was so good.

"Top Bins. Top Bins" in a monotone voice as this Egyptian goes mental in the background.

The 90 degree angle makes a lot more sense than describing it as a bin, though that’s not exactly a stretch.

I found the clip and because I'm a nice guy I uploaded it. Mostly because I'd forgot how funny the phrase 'Inspect the damage' is. Arabic is such a good language.
