Jaidi won me about $600 when I was spread betting on goal minutes, thanks to a 90th towering header.

Will always be a legend for that, never mind his actual playing career.

Poland is a trick as it's probably Matty Cash.

If not him then Fabianski.

Was that keeper that wore tracky bottoms Hungarian?
Gabor Kiraly was indeed Hungarian, but igor has already got that correct with Zoltan Gera being the answer.

Steven Gerrard wasnt given the opportunity. Is the biggest key.

Yeah, having written several of these knobhead questions, that one suggests that it's something outside his control, e.g. he's from the wrong country (not the case as Lampard did it), or he didn't come up against a particular opposition.

Is Ronaldo referring to Cristiano Ronaldo or Bob Ronaldo?

Jimmy Floyd
09-12-2023, 10:50 AM
Given the time span I was going to suggest something like 'score past Buffon in the Champions League' but Gerrard must have had the opportunity to do that.

Depends how specific the Gerrard not being able to do it it is - is it just him or are there other unlisted players that fit? Could be something to do with playing all/most of a career for one team - ie never scored against his first club or something, but that assumes Messi has scored against Barcelona and a few other unlikely occurrences [Scholes, Kane] so I don't think it's that. Also someone like Giggs would never have had the chance, for example.

I wondered if it was something like 'Score against Steven Gerrard'. Doubt Batistuta or Raul will have done that; Owen probably not while at Real Madrid, United or Liverpool; Scholes is the most likely one I think as Kane and Salah would be too late.

EDIT: Just looked up Scholes, only scored two goals against Liverpool, one of them Gerrard was playing. Bollocks.

Not doing a separate quiz thread this year, but here are a quick ten of my trademark bollocks football questions for anyone bored over the festive period.

2. Complete the sequence: Fulham, Anderlecht, Arsenal, Liverpool, Liverpool, xxx
3. Complete the sequence: Boutros Boutros-Ghali, Roger Federer, Hugh Grant, Leonardo da Vinci, Julius Caesar, xxx
4. Fill in the blanks: Chelsea, Chelsea, Aston Villa, xxx, Manchester Utd, xxx, Chelsea
5. Fill in the blanks: France, Sweden, Poland, xxx, xxx
6. They call me the Lancashire Ripper. In my career I've scored against Accrington, Blackburn, Blackpool, Bolton, Burnley, Bury, Everton, Fleetwood, Fylde, Man City, Man Utd, Morecambe, Oldham, Preston, Rochdale and Wigan - and I'm not yet even thirty. Who am I?
7. For my entire club career, aside from 8 games, I represented current Premier League clubs. Despite this, I scored 126 goals in leagues other than the Premier League. The first trophy of my career was also the first cup that my club had ever won, and I scored twice in the final. Who am I?
8. I made over 600 career appearances, with over 550 of them in my home country. There, I won 14 trophies including a European trophy, and won over 100 caps. Despite that, in my one short period abroad I also managed to win the Premier League. Who am I?
9. The most prolific season of my career was in 97/98, when I banged in double figures. I played in the World Cup that summer, making the knockouts, as I also did in my other World Cup appearance. I represented my country across three different decades and won a league title there before winning four more in a neighbouring country. I was even a club world champion once, though I never did better than a quarter-final in all my international tournaments. Who am I?
10. With eleven league titles in my cabinet, I must be one of the more decorated footballers going around. Despite this haul, I'm chiefly known for being the scorer of a cup final winner. Despite my rampant club success, I only have silver medals at international level. Who am I?

Ian Wright is correct for 7, his Zenith Data Systems win for Palace being the trophy in question.

Robben, though a great guess, is not correct, he has one international silver medal, this player has silver medals plural. Also would argue he isn't chiefly known for a cup final winner, score one though he did. In my mind he's chiefly known for cutting inside and running like a fanny.

I’d love to see the effort gone into creating and extracting all this from a spreadsheet.

I want it to be something like Kyle Chalk or Kevin Shark.

Wasn't Didier Digard excellent on champ manager once?

I can only think of things like Kazimierz Kalinichuk.

Kevin Kirk. Keith Park.

The most notable K played for Chelsea in the 90s and you'll all know him, and there are two 90s Northern Ireland regens and a former City youth prospect who made one appearance in 2013.

Didn't he have a stint at Fulham or something? Another CM legend.

The "league cup" appearances are actually Charity Shield / Domestic Super Cup type games, not truly a league cup. If that helps.

Going by his career trajectory, suspect they're a Bilbao player – Etxeberria? Muniain?

Didn't Hierro have a ludicrous goalscoring season early on? The Bolton finish fits, not sure about the early stint.

Michu the magnificent? Although I guess supercup/charity shield participation would rule him out, and likely any England based player given you'd be unlikely to dodge the league cup for a whole career.

Oh wait, just 3 clubs? Move along.

Sergio Ramos?

That’s a great shout. He used to play quite far forward in the early 90’s.

Hierro is correct.

Valladolid, Real Madrid, Al-Rayyan and Bolton.

Can you name the top U-21 goalscorer for each Premier League season? The player must have been 21 or under at the conclusion of the PL season.

Rooney.

Both correct and both have achieved it the most - 3 times each. Owen is also the only U-21 player to have earned a Golden Boot and he did it twice - 1997-98 & 1998-99, where he scored 18 goals in each season.

Ferguson only managed 6 PL goals last season - the player I'm looking for scored 15.
