How can you have mixed teams with old and new players? Do you play against other people or is it some story-mode or something?

Are you asking "how does Ultimate Team work"?

If so, and in a vastly over-simplified nutshell, you buy players with coins earned in game and some of those players are selected former greats.

Think Panini sticker book. If you have the player in your collection you can use them in game. Obviously some of the sticker cards are worth more than others but you can buy and sell using coins you earn in game.
Every so often you get special versions of a players card. All boost their in-game stats in some way. Some are for the players real life exploits. Some are a flashback to former events or seasons.

In previous iterations it was almost always dependant on real life performance. However this year they've done very well to find way to basically give whoever they want a special card.

When you get cards you want to use, you have to link them via nationality/league they play in. Former players, or Icons as they are in game, link to everyone regardless.

A properly linked player gets 10 chemistry. You're looking to do what you can to get up to 100 team chemistry.

You can still play standard teams in other game modes.

If you were to start this deep into a game cycle you'd be coming up against god tier teams constantly. But if you start in September like most do, it's really down to your pack luck or how much real money you want to spend on in-game packs.

I think it's more popular because people just love the idea of linking up say Ronaldinho and Aubemeyang in the same team as Gerrard and Zidane. But yes once you make your "ultimate team" you play against each other in a few game modes inside the Ultimate Team section.

Online single match - Is what is says on the tin. One off match against a random opponent. You'll earn a few hundred coins for the match.

Division Rivals - A competition that resets every Thursday morning. You get awarded a skill ranking score, which then places you into a division (1-10). You'll then play only people of the same division as you. Your score goes up for every win, down for every loss. If you do very well one week, you'll get promoted to the next division up on the Thursday reset.
When Thursday resets, the next time you log in you'll be offered a choice of 3 rewards on top of your match earned coins. Option 1 will be a lump sum of coins. Option 2 is a bunch of packs to open that you can sell the contents of. Option 3 is like 2, but you get double the amount of packs. The trade off is that you can't sell the items.

FUT Champions/Weekend league - This runs from Friday morning to Sunday night. You have 30 games in that time, but don't have to play them all. For however many wins you get a better reward will be given at certain milestones. For example, rewards get better at 11 wins, then 14, 17, 20, 23, 25 and 27. Mega rewards await for anyone who reaches the top 100 of the world. You'll usually need at least 29 wins for that.
In addition to your match coins, you'll be given a preset reward dependant on your total wins. This will be a chunk of coins as well as some packs to open. If you finish high enough you'll get the option to gain a special variation of a card as a red untradeable version. However this is very random as to how good you'll get.

It’s also so popular as it’s basically now a MMORPG. It encourages grinding for rewards which further boost your team’s in the same way as grinding to level up a character in WOW.

Been using 95 Pogba in place of Vieira this weekend. He’s pretty awesome, but I’m struggling to come to a judgement on whether he’s a better fit for me as a stay back CM with his L/H work rates.

It is embarrassing but if you look at the views the players and the events generate. I understand it a little bit. The grand final yesterday on twitch has about 37k views. Compare that number to the fortnite grand final a few weeks ago and that game had nearly 500k views. I didn't think fortnite would be over ten times as popular. That could be the reason for the massive pay gap.

All the prize money could come from the stream numbers.

Figured I'd try to help out a bit with a big ol' list of answers to some common closed beta questions. So, here goes...

Why can't I access the beta yet?

As stated in the email you got, the beta starts at 6PM BST on Friday (which is UK time.)

Will my FUT team from the beta carry over?

No. It will not.

Will my coins carry over from the beta?

No.

OMG I PACKED NINE ICONS IN THE BETA! Does that mean the pack weight is raised in the full game?

No. The pack weight is raised in the beta so people can try more players.

Do I get unlimited FUT packs in the beta?

No. You are given coins on a daily basis, which you can choose to use on packs.

Will I have access to all modes?

No. You may get access to all modes toward the end of the beta, but the email you got will tell you which modes you have access to. There are different combinations. Most (if not all) will get access to Kick Off mode, then one other mode (Volta, FUT, Pro Clubs, etc.)

Why can't I access EA's beta feedback forum?

You are granted access the first time you log in to the game itself.

What happens if I post screenshots and videos, or stream the game on Twitch/Mixer/YouTube/Facebook/Anywhere?

EA can opt to ban you from ALL EA games. Not just FIFA. Your username appears randomly on the screen in different positions during the beta, so they can identify you.

WOW Why is my favourite player rated 82 when I think he should be rated 85 and all logic points to him being upgraded from the 82 he was in FIFA 19?

Ratings in the beta are NOT final, no matter what anybody tells you.

August 22nd.

How do I get into the beta?

You probably won't, now, but there's a chance more invites will be sent later. You need to enable promotional emails on your EA account to be CONSIDERED for the beta. You are not guaranteed a code.

How big is the download? Can I pre-load it so I'm ready to go at 6PM UK on Friday?

I can tell you that on PS4, the beta is a shade over 39GB. Yes, you can pre-load it.

Is the beta the current build of the game?

Probably not. It will likely be a build from a few weeks ago, so some fixes and changes that have already been made as EA works on the game to bring it to launch are NOT in the beta version.

He's incredible. I sold Prime Gerrard and bought TOTS Mane, TOTS Trent Alexander Arnold, and that daft ST Van Dijk that came out then turned him into a CM. Mane never loses the ball, hits every shot like a missile into the top corner, and moves down the wing like he's on a motorbike.

Van Dijk for 75k has been a bargain too. He just barrels around the midfield knocking everyone on their arse and winning the ball back. He's the first player I've ever had batter the shit out of Vieira.

I think I've played maybe ten games with him and I've yet to see him be pushed off the ball, or fail to push someone else off the ball. I've stuck an Engine on him, and he dominates the midfield to such an extent that it feels like a bit of an oversight on EAs part to have released a card that lets him play there. The match engine just isn't prepared to have someone that size and with those stats in there.

During the game in which he shat on Vieira's chips at one point he shoved Vieira off the ball then held off him and Gullit simultaneously.

Forgot to mention upthread, after that little spree of Liverpool signings I did the first part of the TOTT SBC and got TOTS Andy Robertson out of the pack, meaning I could conceivably field a side with seven Liverpool players in it. I like to rotate a bit so I almost never will, but it's a possibility. It also means I have a choice of TOTS Digne, ROTF Alonso, FUTTIES Mendy, and TOTS Robertson at left back, all of whom are untradeable.
