Yeah you either get hit and die or (presumably, because I never managed it) get out like a normal mission for a slightly different ending. I'm not as forgiving of it as you though, I thought it a fucking awful thing to throw in at the end. I tended to approach the levels like little puzzles so it was particularly annoying not to be able to do that on the last (really cool) level.

I'll spoiler this in case anybody else has bought it:
The whole thing is a revenge thriller, dying to get revenge is in keeping with the sort of movie they're aping.

For me, I mean. I totally get why it'd piss you off and to be honest I'm not sure why it doesn't piss me off because I'm normally the first to rage at games for changing the rules as it suits them or for a final boss.

I hope I'm not turning into some "it's an artistic decision, maaaaaaan....!" dweeb.

I'm going to give it a go over the weekend but it occurs to me that given I'm not ever going to kill every enemy on that level I'm probably trying to kill way more than I actually need to.

Having seen both endings I'd agree with that, it felt like the right thing I just found it mechanically frustrating not having at least a courtesy checkpoint. One of those times I felt a game wasn't respecting my time, out of the blue as well because I was loving it up until that point.

I really enjoyed doing the last level from scratch each time, to be honest. It didn't take me longer than one gaming session, and it meant that the early stage of each run was a well-oiled machine by the time I was done. There was something really enjoyable about absolutely nailing down the precise series of moves required for the early sequences, then wildly improvising as things get less familiar in the back half.

Fine and dandy on PS4. Jumped into the Free for All society, started a round and rage quit the second hole because I'm so shit at putting. The game did slow to a crawl when I switched my golfer's gender on my first day with the game, mind.

That annoyed me initially, especially as there's a tooltip explicitly telling you that the arc is a lie. If he knew that why not just code it properly?

Isn't it only a lie when you make contact with other things? Like if you hoof an enemy into the air first? Otherwise I've found it pretty reliable, despite the warning from that tooltip.

The Golf Club 2 also has a problem where it gets a little framey when judging your swings. I'll not put it down to my poor ability from ... everywhere but it definitely fiddles with your speed. Had my first disconnect before but the game tends to pick where you left off and I got back online after two attempts.

18.6 handicap. Room for improvement. Found the shot limit for my first time. I knew there was one but didn't realise it was +7. Fucking hell. Given how they supported the first one, what actually is new in 2?

Dark Soldier

I'm using Tour clubs, that shows the huge difference between them both. Not had an over par round yet, but just played Little Brook at -8 and Denali at E. The physics, shot system and look of the game is much improved. Driving on Tour is nails as fuck but worth it, and the added spin on shorter clubs is a Godsend.

I bought Dragon Age 3 yesterday, I'll be interested to see if the criticism is as overblown as it was for the previous game.

I'm not sure I'll ever find out as I've given up part way through the opening mission, the controls are that bad. No click to move, no queueing abilities/orders, you can't rebind half the controls, and you have to hold down a button to attack something. If I wanted to play Mass Effect I'd have given myself a lobotomy and bought that instead.

Awful.

Really enjoying it so far though.

It plays like it used to be a third person shooter, there's no way to play it as a tactical rpg like you could with the other two (the 'tactical' camera, brilliantly, doesn't work inside buildings). I couldn't even find an option to auto-pause at the start of combat at which point I realised it was just Mass Effect with swords rather than anything approaching the other two.

I didn't mind Hawke (the lady version at least), in fact I'd have been happy to have another game in the same style as the second. :gs:

That an HD remaster of a set of super shitty games, that probably cost a few hundred grand, had a better launch than one of the best looking and most innovative open world experiences of the year, that probably cost near to a hundred million.

Can't see a bean counter try to address that issue.

Were they shitty? I really don't know as I've never played them but they're certainly loved and have the advantage of many years of nostalgia, doubly so over something that has yet to move out of 'next big thing hyperbole' territory.

I loved the Crash Bandicoot games, but I prefer to leave things I'm nostalgic over in the past, in case they do turn out to actually be crap.

It's far from surprising, and not at all depressing, that a full remaster of them is selling well. And the amount of money they cost is so irrelevant it's actually stupid to bring it up.

The Golf Club 2 is easily the best game of golf I've ever played in a videogame. The bounces, the hooks and slices, the way the ball rolls, the wind, the lie of the ball hampering your shot (if you're on a downhill lie it takes distance off, distance on if uphill). Its so much different to the first in everything bar putting, which is only slightly different.

Slowly mastering the tour swing, can get perfect/perfect tempo with the line in the cone now. Still hook/slice a little. Went -30 through four rounds on St Andrews earlier in 12mph+ winds.

HB have nailed it now the servers work.

I picked this up Sunday night and have to say I am loving it too. The fact you went -30 on any course blows my mind. I was new to the game so expected it to be Tiger Woods with better graphics but the realism on this is fantastic. I finish most rounds 1 or 2 over or under. And its so refreshing to play a game that isn't just swing and win. I remember on tiger woods on the par fives using a driver on my 2nd shot from the fairway, try that on this and the results are comical.

Only thing I dont like so far (due to not understanding it) are the career mode and society. What's the benefit of leveling it? I know it lets you play more events over a season but you chose when the season is over so why not just keep doing new seasons with 4 events....

The career mode and all that is for those who want to play a single player aspect. The real meat of the game is in the courses created by many fantastic designers, and joining societies. If you can't find any societies, sign up here:

http://tgctours.com/

and go to the forums, there's loads of them who welcome people of all skill levels. TGCTours mirrors the real life golf schedule too, play for virtual cash, world rankings etc so if you want to get involved in that aspect its worth it. Ya don't have to play every week, just whenever you want or can, 4 rounds a week. The TGC2 season kicks off at the end of this month. You do Q-School over six courses, get your score, submit it, and you're given a card from either PGA/Euro through to the amateur ranks of CCA through to Z. I'm on Euro, hence the -30. Was top 30 in the world at one point.

Going 1 or 2 over as a brand new player is impressive regardless of which clubs you use, TGC has always been the hardest console golf game around. If you're on PS4 feel free to add me (DorkSirjur), I'm around most nights/weekends and its easy to join into a round I'm on or vice versa.

Appreciate that, massive help. Is there any particular course designers to follow? Do you need to be in a society with a high amount of members and a high level? For example, if me and my mate are the only 2 members of a society will there be parts of the game that I'm missing out on? Yeah the -30 sounds unbelievable the way the game plays.

My favourite part of the game so far is how satisfying a birdie is on this. Ive got the odd eagle but you gotta play very well to even be in with a shout. I play on PC and after a quick google search it shows that courses are cross platform but doesn't say anything about playing cross platform or using your ghost.

For courses designers, the six best I'd list as:

Scarpacci (My favourite designer and a fantastic geezer)
ArticFury85
CrazyCanuck1985 (known for stunning courses, and Canuck, aka fucking crazy, greens)
Reebdog
TasteGW
theCLV (The best real course recreator out there)

Worth keeping a check on here too: http://tgctours.proboards.com/board/9/completed-courses

I'd also highly recommend St. Andrews and Magnolia currently, both amazing courses to play and fantastic version. You don't miss any parts of the game by not being in a society, or only having mates in one, bar winning more in game cash to buy frivolous shit, really. Most societies have weekly tournaments for fun, however.

A very quick tip I can give you is elevation/downhill. For every 3 feet of uphill, add 1 yard to your shot. So say its 165 yards 21 feet uphill, it'll be roughly 172 exactly to the pin (not including wind into the calculation). Do the same for downhill, so if its 220 yards down 30, its 210 yards to the pin exactly (give or take a yard or two on these estimations due to lie as well).

Putting, use the marker, always, it gives leeway on your putt. So a 15 footer up 10" is 25 feet of power or a little more. 30 feet down one foot will be 18 feet of power. Move the marker to the answer after doing the math, move it left or right due to break, then aim at the marker, not the hole. The marker will give you a 2-3 leeway on power so it allows the ball to drop a bit easier.

Wind, and the rest of the math is still up in the air as we all get used to it, but the math side won't be as important as TGC1 (math was everything in that game) due to the loft boxes being less exploitable.

Dark Soldier
04-07-2017, 05:41 PM
Oh and the putting tips depend on green speed, which you can see above your putter in the top right. The higher the number, the faster the greens, 187 is fastest, so it putts like shit off a shovel, 101 is like treacle. Adapt to that, too.

Had a great game just now. Got down to the final 10 and I was hiding in a roadside hut. The circle closes in and I'm outside it so I make a run for it and there's a guy running alongside me at my 10 o'clock position. I get up close enough, couple of blasts with a shotgun and finish him off with a pistol. I then run into a house and make my way up to the first floor and there's a fucking guy hiding in there. He puts a few bullets in me, I return fire but he finishes me off and I finish 9th. My hands were shaking afterwards. This game is amazing.

There's a sort of perverse curiosity in watching games where either the developers couldn't give a shit, were genuinely inept or were fucked over by other things.

Anyone wondering what all the Dayz hype was about back in the day, it was this x100.

From the small amount I've seen of DayZ, isn't it pretty aimless? It just seems to be endless running with no actual goal. With pubg you're always forced to move towards the restricting play zone and so it forces engagement. I don't think I've been in a game that's gone over 30 minutes.

I meant the mod not the shit new one.

The tense encounters they're looking to re-create in these games were the ones we enjoyed in the mod, they were less frequent but the investment in your current character was much greater so they felt like they had more meaning. You can track the evolution of this stuff from the original Dayz mod (and other modes like Wasteland etc) through Battle Royale in Arma 2 & 3 right up to the recent spate of arena deathmatch things like Culling and Plunkbat.

One minute he's dual-wielding auto-shotguns against SUPERSOLDATEN and the next he's talking about shit that happened in his childhood. And yet because the animation on the characters is great and the voice actors aren't spewing ham everywhere it somehow hangs together. I don't think I'll bother with The Old Blood but I'm looking forward to The New Colossus, which I did not realise is the name of the poem that's on the Statue of Liberty's pedestal.

made a start on The Signal from Tolva and enjoying it so far. One bit in particular of note is an interior area where it has portal-type things that you wouldn't notice outwith scan mode but reposition you in the ship. In the first instance before you realise what's happening it has a slightly disorienting, bigger-on-the-inside type effect.

EDIT: Was just looking to see if any of the gaming channels I've started watching have a Let's Play of it. I was looking at the comments (I know, I know, I normally don't) and it says: "This game is like a borderlands clone with less polish to me."

There are three little coloured bars on the HUD that fill up as you get close to signals, the red hexagon things, and normal loot/scrap. Either the game doesn't tell you what they are or I completely missed it, they're bloody useful when you're clearing out areas. The lorebook is absolutely not required reading but it does a nice job of framing what's going on. I think I read it when it was about half way through.

So I've done at least one run of all the Hitman episodes. It's a squillion times better than Absolution though probably not quite as memorable as Blood Money's better moments. But it does some really good stuff..... just not the dreadful, barely-there story. The disguises are good and work much better than the well-intentioned changes in Absolution, the levels largely look the business (though Colorado is reeeaaaally dull) and I think the Intel / Opportunities stuff generally works really well. I've done repeat runs of some of the other missions to raise my mastery and discover other routes and I suspect I shall be doing more of that in future. As well as whatever this 'escalation' stuff is about that I've not looked at yet.

I'm also loving The Signal from Tolva. I love the diary-type entries and research logs you find and how they give you a sense of what's going on without it being a real story (so far) as such. I love that the combat and enemy AI are robust enough to provide some really tense battles. I had one there where I ran into one faction, the Zealots, and was trying to fend a few of those off myself when a patrol of Bandits turned up behind me, forcing me to pop my shield and leg it for cover. But those factions don't like each other any more than they like me, so while I reloaded and let my shield / AOE ability recharge they knocked some lumps out of each other. Eventually it was down to two Bandits and me, with my health low. I took potshots at them to get them to waste their shield charge and after trying to circle me to no effect* they rushed me. So I crouched behind cover so they couldn't get a shot then popped my shield, ran at them head-on and hit my AOE blast ability which weakened them enough for me to finish them off. And because of those recharging abilities there's a proper ebb and flow to the lengthier battles as well. If you can trick them into using their shields with pot-shots then you've got some more options on your hands, though if you're outnumbered that doesn't always help. And your loadout will make a big different here too. Surprisingly deep and I'm loving it. The other robots basically carry on without you for the most part as well. I have had a few instances where I've been on higher ground scouting an area out and then heard a gunfight going on. Sometimes it's my faction fighting enemies, sometimes enemies fighting each other. Fun stuff.

* The AI is mostly fairly basic and it's hard to tell with some of it how much is accidental and they've hit upon something that works or whether Big Robot made the AI to behave like this intentionally. Your AI chums sometimes take really weird, circuitous routes when you're just mooching about and when you're being flanked it looks much the same so perhaps the pathfinding both in and out of combat is totally intentional. It works anyway, and makes the whole thing seem more complex than it possibly.

EDIT: Christ, dunno when the last time I wrote that long a post was.

Out of interest what clubs do you use? I have been doing the career mode template seasons to improve and I'm getting there... Slowly. Definitely seeing improvements.

Finished a 4 round event on 12 under and the guy in second was 5 over. However only playing on Easy difficulty right now which seems realistic to my current standard. When I play the one round events on the harder courses with tough greens and strong winds the leader usually ends up on 2 or 3 over, and I'm about that level. Currently sitting in 3rd overall for the season with 5 events left. I am absolutely loving it, even if I am 10 over through 9, I can still watch out for the Frenchman in 1st and the American in 2nd and hope they are doing just as terrible.

Played a few courses with a mate last night and just discovered "Turn Play". Makes the online play so much better that I get to watch his shot and then he watches mine. Adds pressure to each hole instead of just trying to beat a score he has already posted.

Tour clubs, and I use default bag apart from removing a wood and bringing in a GW which is a Godsend around the greens. I basically go 279yard Driver then a leap down to 245yards as my next club, but deloft that and you get some beautiful roll on it so I can hit the 250-270 yard range easily unless way uphill. Oh, forgot, I swapped a club or two for Hybrids too, very good clubs.

Red tees = Driveable par 4s aplenty with Tour clubs :D

I don't fancy doing Ancient Dragon. That is the worst boss in the series and beating him once was enough. WWE 2k17 is so broken.

The rankings system makes absolutely no sense.

Whilst US champion I decided to join the rankings for the WWE Championship (that you have to choose which title to go for is shit) and I've been stuck at number 4 for about a year in game. I started a rivalry with number 1 contender Cena and nothing happened, tried with Champion Brock and still at 4th and back to new number 1 contender Orton but I'm still at fourth.

Even fucking Cesaro went from about 9th to number 1 contender after I destroyed Cena and got a shot but I'm stuck, completely.

I even decided to get friendly with 'The Authority' to help push me up the rankings and in doing so I dropped my US title to Sin Cara as they asked me to do so, nothing changed for me but I didn't have to face Sin Cara at a 10th PPV so that's a win I guess.

Finished Telltale Batman and very much enjoyed it. As a Telltale game it's pretty much what you'd expect, though one of the better examples of their work.

As a Batman game it does some stuff I really liked.

The most obvious thing is the stuff you do as Bruce. It feels worthwhile and I didn't just spend those sections wanting to get to be Batman again.

I like that it didn't throw twenty million villains into it. There are a few (and some set up or with room to progress their stories) but their presence made sense.

And on that note, it's so refreshing (as much as I love the Rocksteady trilogy) to have a Batman game where the Joker isn't a prominent part of the story. With the ending to this one I suspect he's going to be in season 2 but I'd love it if they sort of hinted at what he's up to and then saved him for the presumably inevitable season 2.

I also really liked the way they did the detective stuff. Batman felt more like a detective in this than in the Rocksteady crimescene stuff, and it was nice to see him doing that in some different types of scenes as well. Most notably the two parts in the Vale house.

That always annoyed me about the Arkham games. They wheeled out a lot of villains and then only gave a couple a star turn. I was looking forward to Black Mask and the whole assassin plot in Origins and they blow that super early.

Ian
13-08-2017, 07:21 PM
Origins was a spectacular disappointment on that front. And as much as I actually quite liked how he was used didn't they all-but-promise that Joker wasn't going to be a big deal in Knight?

I also only just realised the second series of Telltale Batman is out. Or the first episode is, or whatever.

Shindig

I've got XCOM2 on the go but really need to dedicate a couple of hours to getting back into Signal From Tolva. I probably just need to change my loadout until I get to the next bunker / outpost and then it'll be grand.

Threw the towel in on Psychonauts. For some reason, I'm not getting a crucial double jump at the end of Waterloo World. Close enough. Decent game but it peaks at the Milkman Conspiracy and then drops. Plus it's made by the same bastards who decided 90's adventure logic.

Ugggghhh, really? Is there a lot of that? I need to go back to Psychonauts but that could be a dealbreaker. I was loving Grim Fandango until I realised I was loving the setting / characters / story but just using a walk-through for the actual game because even the puzzles I solved myself I got no satisfaction from.

I find this alot with adventure games.

I'm hearing from other media sources there are framerate and graphical issues on certain rigs. The lack of review codes apparently didn't help the cause so I'm keen to hear what you think of this game.

I've played the free trail of Saints Row 4 this weekend and found the controller support absolutely atrocious despite the fact I've been using a perfectly decent PS4 controller.

New Uncharted 4 expansion/standalone thing is out on Wednesday, which crept up nicely. Basically 10 more hours of the same which suits me perfectly. Do games come out on Wednesdays now?

The game itself is ace, it's just a bit rough round the edges with things like slow menu navigation and threadbare with a lot of features still to be added. The good part is that it seems to have outperformed expectation in early access so that'll speed things along.

F1 2017 has reminded me how much aerodynamic faff got lodged onto 2000's cars. No six-wheeled Tyrell but they have short versions of Austin and Suzuka. The latter being the twisty first split, rather than the other shortened version that I've only seen in Tourist Trophy. Track detail's a little cack on console but it's running at 60fps.

Come to think of it, the classics selection's a bit erm... new school. Begins in '88 and ends with the 2010 Red Bulls. Includes the 1995 Ferrari which Schumi beat every week. Alonso's 2006 Renault is in there which I think was the last hurrah for the V12s. Wish they could get the sound right in these games.

First race in the career done. Picked McLaren and immediately went for POWERTRAIN UPGRADES. (none of which come into effect for a couple of weeks)

- Nowhere in practice.
- Alonso picked as my first rival (4 tenths off him in FP2)
- 7th in Quali (Alonso in 17th)
- 3rd in the race.

I'm on medium difficulty and the AI cannot pick a pass. Ricciardo got by me temporarily but kindly let me past when he saw how hot I was coming into the penultimate corner. They still can't handle rain either.

As shindig said, you can add ghosts of other players if you want to, or play solo rounds. No official courses but it has an amazing course creator which some very, very good designers use, with a lot of real course recreations, Augusta, St Andrews, Pebble Beach, Sawgrass, Royal Birkdale etc, and a fucking ton of created courses. In the thousands.

I can understand that you have to work up your profile to better skills/clubs/etc, but I'm getting perfect for backswing and downswing and my drives are landing within 100 yards which is making it basically unplayable.
