Heh yeah that last point is very true. My most memorable moment so far has been (there's a power spoiler in here if you want to avoid it):

I found a door blocked off, with tiny little gaps in the blockage. I couldn't break through it, so I dropped an apple on the ground, used morph, turned into an apple and rolled through the gap

Its a minor thing but it worked, made me smile like a dick.

Having now played Prey, it's craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap. How they've managed to make a shooter that controls worse than Bioshock is almost impressive. The space you're in is cool if you're into it but frankly I'm a bit bored of 'you wake up on a space station with no memory and every one is dead'.

The intro is probably one of the best things a video-game has produced but after that it's absolute toilet that takes all the worst parts of Bioshock and refuses to modernize them, they even used the same fucking awful font for the art deco stuff. Some enemy variety would be nice too rather than 2 forms of shapeless entities for hours on end.

Review:

I absolutely fucking loved it for around four fifths of the game. There's a few hours towards the end that drag a little as the sense of discovery and exploration kinda ends and you're tasked with a lot of back/forward through areas, but the story is strong enough that I didn't hate those sections.

It is, all told, a complete mash up of around five to six games, Bioshock, System Shock, Dishonored, Deus Ex, Metroidvanias etc. Takes all the best bits, although the combat will be shite for some because until you upgrade some shit its deliberately sluggish, as is movement speed, to keep the game tense within the mimic gimmick. There's plenty scope to build your guy/gyal however you want with skill trees and all that typical jazz.

The recycling mechanic really fits the game, allowing you to pick up junk by the ton, whap it all in a machine which transforms it all into materials from which you can create ammo/health and a multitude of other cool shit. You don't have to do all this, if you're the kinda heartless, non-OCD bus riding wanker, but you'll be doing yourself, and me, a disservice.

The star of the entire show is the ship. Beautifully built, interconnected, full of areas you want to hack into/find a way into/do some super crazy awesome shit to get in/do it the obvious way and find a keycard like a fanny. The game, as a whole, is at its absolute best when you're exploring, very similar to the recent Deus Ex efforts. You've got ya hacking mini-games, emails to read, notes to pick up, multiple strands of plot to stitch together.

Essentially if you like games, like plot, like story, like exploring, like skill trees, like SUPER AWESOME RUN SPEED AND JUMPS (skill tree power) which makes the combat a lot more fun, aren't a nutter, aren't gonna shout SHIT THIS SHIT FOR CUNTS MATE within five hours and you like to smile, buy it. If not, don't chat to me fam.

Due to Breath of the Wild being potential GOAT, this sits very easily in my second favourite new game experience of the year.

I love that because of the openness of games like Prey you can have "scripted" moments that the game can't totally take into account where you might be.

I just got my first Nightmare appear....... when I was perched on Alex Yu's balcony and it couldn't properly get at me so I just Q-Beam'd it to death.

Really liking it thus far.

I've only played with characters through story thus far so haven't tried everyone.

Initial thoughts are that I don't get on with Firestorm or Cyborg (they seem a bit too clunky for me) but love Catwoman and Blue Beetle, Green Arrow isn't too bad either.

Red Dead 2 delayed until Spring 2018, but looks stunning. No surprises.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is now set to launch Spring 2018 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

This outlaw epic set across the vast and unforgiving American heartland will be the first Rockstar game created from the ground up for the latest generation of console hardware, and some extra time is necessary to ensure that we can deliver the best experience possible for our fans.

We are very sorry for any disappointment this delay causes, but we are firm believers in delivering a game only when it is ready. We are really excited to bring you more details about the game this summer. In the meantime, please enjoy this selection of new screenshots from the world of Red Dead Redemption 2.

To stay up-to-date on all of our latest news and info, make sure you’re subscribed to the Rockstar Mailing List and follow us on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Twitch.

I just tried the Multiverse mode, which is a brilliant idea, with Aquaman and he might be my new favourite.

Sir Andy Mahowry

The only thing I don't like is the special moves.

They have no range, can be blocked and do little damage. Much better to meter burn combos for extra damage, it makes the special moves absolutely useless.

Also, let it be known that the last 3 fights in a 4* or higher Multiverse on Injustice 2 are hard as fuck.

I had to fight Flash, Deadshot and Black Adam (he's almost impossible to beat at the best of times) as the final 3 and it was a real struggle. Their defence was solid and their attack was mental.

I believe that I lost a total of 24 times between those 3 earlier. I'd be donning it, they'd then chain 2 combos and I was fucked.

Finished Prey. Great game. But...

That ending is a proper wet fart. I also saw it coming (or knew it was some sort of "It's all a dream!" toss ) from when I tried the escape pod halfway through and Alex says something about "this isn't the one" and to start again.

The choices are fine, right up until the point when you realise that none of it matters. Unless you've been a psycho and killed everybody I suppose?

It's a shame because I'm an absolute sucker for a load of exposition by diaries and stuff and people chirrupping in my ear through a game, but then it turns out the whole thing has been done presumably to just to set up some sequel. Bleh.

It was cool to look at my hands in the post-credits scene and get confirmation of what was happening but still.

Dunno what's next. Maybe Kentucky Route Zero or Owlboy.

Yeah, I think the Mega Drive stuff is about £3 and £6 for N64, which is a ripoff. But then on Steam the very first Call of Duty is still over a tenner so who bloody knows.

I might buy Eternal Champions just to see if I can finally beat the final boss 24 years (for fuck's sake) later.

You no longer have the "only one enemy attacks at once" thing, and it looks more Dark Soulsy (but like a shit version of it). You also have a loot system that looks about or more extensive than the one that's in Horizon Zero Dawn.

There was also an article about the game in Game Informer with this info:

All new info: • Started working on game before unity • Brand new fighting system • New A.I. • No minimap but a elder scrolls type compass at top • No more sprinting button, speed depends on analog stick • Crouching is back • Story is being kept a secret • Eagle vision is a subtle pulse that highlights objects not enemies • Takes place during the ascent and reign of cleopatra • You can climb everything in the game • Large and small cities with many landmarks including Memphis and Alexandria • The controllable eagle leak was true • NPC's have a day/night cycle and includes time for them to eat, sleep, work, and "answer the call of nature" • Attack buttons are the right shoulder and trigger • A.I. does not take turns to attack • New combat system is more hit-box driven • As you fight, an adrenaline gauge fills up, and when both attack buttons are pressed powerful attacks are unleashed • Left shoulder button is lock on • There are treasures to find in the depths of the water (sunken ships, long-forgotten ruins) • Stat element of customization is removed • New gear system where players can improve specific parts of your gear by crafting materials • Leveling system that has a level cap of 40 • Bayek is not the only playable character in the game but that character is a secret • There are legendary items to loot in the game • You can add blocked arrows to your inventory • You can no longer one hit enemies that are more powerful than you with your hidden blade • Buttons for free-running up and down are removed • Puzzles are back but more challenging and less switches • Much more in depth ability graph with 3 paths (Seer, Warrior, Hunter) • There are gladiator battles in arenas"

I feel like I've got enough out of Metro. Anthem looks like Bioware's crack at Destiny because that's a thing people want? I'm more intrigued to see if Sony show some Shenmue, God of War, Death Stranding or if From's logo turns up anywhere.

Maybe the FF VII remake which doomed IO Interactive, as well.

Shenmue, Death Stranding and FFVII have all been confirmed that they won't be there.

'A Way Out' looks like the most interesting game to come out in years but will be crap.

Meanwhile there's a GOAT-contender game out on Early Access. It's fantastic. Watch one playthrough to get the gist and then give it a bang. It's incredible.

Battlefield will be going to the Eastern Front.
EA will be ripping off whatever did well last year (do they have a team shooter a la Overwatch yet?)
One or both of MS/Sony will announce a new iteration of their console with added NUMBERS
Umpteen other publishers will outline their focus tested, generic as fuck AAA skinner boxes none of which will have anything interesting to say or bear much resemblance to what is eventually released
You will not be able to trust anything Randy Pitchford says

Digital day one stuff is usually £50. £60-£80 for some deluxe editions. There'll be some currency or packs thrown in with that price tag. I like the E3 hype. I like the dumb press conferences in front of partisan workforces and the poorly-considered celebrity tie-ins. It's all theatre.

Ooh, another Assassins Creed I bet that'll be a radical departure from the last six. Next up is FIFA 8billion, I hear they've made the grass a nanometer longer and Wayne Rooney now has seven ways to shin the ball to an opposing player rather than just the paltry six we had last year.

It's been a while since an Injustice 2 post:

I've just discovered the guild co-op battles:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xA5O8FwtbAo

The problem is that the guys I've been playing with in my guild (well 3 of the 4) are fucking woeful. I spent about an hour fighting Dr Fate with the one decent guy and someone shit. First guy would do a decent amount of damage, I'd do a bit more and we'd leave the other guy with not much HP left to take off. But no matter how little was left (the lowest I left the boss with was about 900 health and they start on 12k), he'd always find a way to fuck it up. We won 2 in about 10 attempts, both times when we made it so the last guy did nothing.

With the other lot the first, who had a higher profile level than me, would do fuck all. He'd hang back, try to stay alive for a bit and hit super moves, problem was that he sucked at evading and blocking attacks. I'd then come in and wipe the boss. 2 out of 2 with me not letting the third guy attack at all in the second.

http://i.imgur.com/SSgVAlQ.jpg

I'm not even that good, just jump around and hit 3/4 combos that you know of and done. It's not fucking hard.

Yeah as it feels like fresh, proper horror in a videogame. No weird shot, not mentalness, just a creepy as hell fucked up family and a weird, falling apart house. Almost Texas Chainsaw Massacre the game.

Then a certain point happens, which I'll spoiler:

I think I played through F.E.A.R about four or five times back in the day and the ladder scare got me every time. There were just enough of those awkward little catwalk to ladder parts that I could never remember exactly which one had that little bitch scampering at me, so I was on edge every time and still shat my pants when she finally turned up. Only got me at the bottom the first time though. :uhoh:

You have 8 turns to hack the objective. Okay, so I've gotta push quick, so I do. Five turns left, and I'm getting close, so I push a guy (I'm still in concealment) on a double turn move, only to see the fog of war lift and three enemies all within six tiles of me. My other guys are too far back for me to do one movement turn and open fire, and the guy I've pushed on is gonna get fucking raped by the insane AI accuracy.

The thing that had me raging about The Last of Us was it was a game that pushed boundaries on the PS3 with the tech, the story, the way it unfolded, and they tacked on 10 year old gunplay, stock videogame tropes (here grab that dumper/ladder so we can climb this conveniently placed wall) and boring ass stealth sections. Walking into an area and seeing a ton of waist high walls I wonder if there'll be a fight here hhmm. I'd have loved it if it'd been a walking sim, I ended up hating it so so much.

John
15-06-2017, 08:40 PM
I played about an hour of the original Uncharted and hadn't touched the series since then, so the problems I'm moaning about might be old news to anyone who's played the whole lot.

The Last of Us varied the gameplay just enough that the story really shone through and kept me going for the duration. Uncharted 4 is literally the same thing the whole time with the exception of three puzzle sections, two of which are either a version of or involve heavy use of the same gameplay mechanics the rest of the game uses, and that jeep bit from all the adverts. Then it suddenly introduces a new mechanic for the final boss, which consequently could come from a completely different game and feel precisely as relevant.

I was very impressed.

You can see we're in the early stages of it and that if it takes off it'll improve a lot, but the following ranged from really appealing to blowing me away.

Tried a Bu-Ray through it and it's like having your own private cinema right in front of you.

Played the demo disk stuff, which included a shooting range thing and a deep dive in a cage. The former inspires thoughts of how they could quite easily make a 24 game and the latter feels like you're there so much that I'd actually pay money to experience things like virtual holidays - I mean looking at things like Machu Picchu rather than drinking beer and violating local customs. When the football season ticket stuff takes off it's going to be totes amaze.

But the best thing was Resident Evil 7, which was so good it's hard to describe. The feeling you have when the menu screen appears and morphs into a room that you're in is unlike anything I've ever experienced before and it only got better when a bloke with an axe started chopping at me - I was flinching, holding my arms up to protect myself. The works.

The headset itself is a bit cumbersome and as I said above you can easily see where it could improve, but it's so good out of the box that if the games follow suit (I understand Skyrim's just been announced) then it'd be enough to make me buy a PS4 and VR without even thinking twice tomorrow.

Very very impressed.

Just hit a sudden series of pain-in-the-dick boss fights in Owlboy there. Luckily they've bossed it with the checkpointing so failure isn't TOO irritating.

1. Not my character.
2. It's the penultimate chalice dungeon which has a gimmick.

Permanently lowers players hit points by 50% while inside the dungeon
The amounts of physical damage received and heal will be decreased along with the decreased max health, but elemental damage will do normal damage (making keeper of the old lords in layer 1 surprisingly tough, being able to 1 shot players).

On my character my stamina bar is larger than my health. The first boss was piss. I could just parry him and regain any lost health.

If anyone took this recommendation and enjoyed it then you should check out another series on the same channel made by the same guys, Car Boys. It's essentially two guys crashing cars and stuff in BeamNG but it gets really good at the end and actually really beautifully made and edited when you realise what they're doing.

I'm gonna give this a go. I've been watching a lot of Game Grumps recently upon a recommendation from a guy at work. Their Mario Maker series is way more entertaining than watching them repeatedly fail a super-hard level many times in a row really should be.

Bloody loving Ronin. It blatantly rips off the excellent Gunpoint, but makes it turn-based and more about action than stealth. It's like Gunpoint knocked up Hotline Miami and then made it turn-based.

Only thing I wish is Devolver put a thing in so that it recorded the fights and then let you play them back at full speed without the turns.

Ronin does a lot of things right, it's super satisfying when you roll into a room with a plan and slice everyone to bits. I felt the skill progression was a bit stingy, some of the levels have objectives that I didn't see how I was going to complete so I really had to pick upgrades vry carefully.

Ian
24-06-2017, 12:04 PM
It's probably just a case of me getting used to things but the level I did just there I'm not sure how I was supposed to do it without setting off the alarm.

A lot of fun though. When you sword-ballet your way through a crowded room it's very satisfying, as you say.

Did you play Gunpoint as well, Disco?

ItalAussie

Oh, I really liked both Ronin and Gunpoint. There were a couple of levels in Ronin that I couldn't pull off perfectly, but it was always very satisfying when you did. It's one of the few objective-based games where I simply wrote some off as impossible. I have a feeling you need to power up certain directions of the skill tree in order to achieve some of them.

I would say that Gunpoint was the slightly better game though. It's a nice study on how a very similar mechanic can produce two totally different gameplay styles with only subtle differences in implementation and emphasis.

Ian

It always amuses me when I'm playing a game that feels broadly similar (in my case, Wolfenstein: TNO is also an FPS after Prey) to one you've not long finished and it somewhat throws you. I keep looking about it's (lovely) levels looking for more alternate routes than the game has.

I am enjoying it though. I'm liking the stealth way more than I thought. That and dual-wielding auto-shotguns.

The restarting guns-wise every mission is a pain in the hole but I guess there is at least some logic to it in the case of the first post-resistance-base mission I'm doing.

Anyone played Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons?

Ian
25-06-2017, 09:18 PM
I think I mentioned a Hotline Miami vibe for Ronin, and I'm definitely getting that as I get to the harder levels. Not because the gameplay is similar, just because there's a sort of puzzle element to it when you get into the tricky fights.

In Hotline Miami the solution to the "puzzle" would be "smash the door into that guard, steal his gun, shoot the dog, through the gun at the first guard who bursts into the room and then rush the next one-" etc. in this it's "Right, if I leap at those two through the glass then the others will start shooting before I land and miss, letting me take out the robocop-looking bastard and then jump again as the other bastards take aim and fire my ninja rope at the ceiling to avoid the gunfire and-"

Of course it then goes wrong and you try and work out if you took the wrong plan of attack or if you just got unlucky with the gunfire aims or whatever.

It's ace.

Anyone played Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons?

I haven't but RPS loved it. the developers are now working on some sort of split-screen co-op prison break thing which sounds interesting.

I still remember the one long-range goal I scored as it was almost impossible to do, and there was a glorious goal where my centre back waltzed from the back through the entire Brazil side to coolly finish. It went down in legend as the Matthaus goal amongst the five of us who'd regularly play each other (even though I was Italy), which was made all the better by the fact 90% of my goals were tap-ins after a goalkeeper parry. I loved that game.

I've managed to clear out two or three rooms of dudes without taking a hit but keeping your limit break points between rooms / floors is an absolute ballache.

I reckon the key will be saving the first guy in the last room until last so if you have taken a hit you may still be able to make it to the bike. I'll probably keep dipping into it but I can't envision a reality in which I get through the whole thing without getting hit at all.

Disco
29-06-2017, 06:58 PM
I only ever concentrated on staying alive, bugger the limit break thing. It was the lack of checkpoints that did for me, the first few rooms weren't exactly simple to clear so I'd get a bit further, take a hit while working out how to finish a room then have to do the entire thing again. It's one slight redeeming factor is that it's not too hard to finish it once you've taken a hit.

Ian
29-06-2017, 09:28 PM
Did you ever get through to the bike while still dying? Is that a thing? Does it have a third ending or is it basically dead or totally untouched?

The lack of checkpoints is the killer though I see why they did it / the damage mechanic for the last level. If I ever manage to finish it I'll feel like a goddamn sexual tyrannosaur.
