My biggest gripe (as a FANBOY) is no Quidditch in the game. Hoping they bring out a DLC.
So gents, real talk time. Is it good?
There still seem to be some major reviewers which haven't touched it yet and some of the reviews I have read are a bit "hmmmm." I'd never have been buying it on release anyway but I currently have no real idea whether it appears to be actually good or just an impressive non-flub.
Though I am thankfully managing to swerve a lot of The Discourse that is presumably swirling around it.

Trying to pick through the culture war leaves me thinking it's a decent 7.5 that gets amplified and crushed depending on which side of 'the debate' you're on. Not a game of the year contender but seems to be generally well received.

Most I know playing it have it at game of year kinda level and I've now done almost 3 hours and really enjoyed it.
There is a lot, and I mean a lot to discover. And it is fucking huge.
Not arsed about the hifflepiffle magic and scrumtums and gibberish child words but it's a delight to play.
Anybody (probably Mahow) played Madden '22? See it's on Game Pass.
I think I asked this question last year about '21 and I recall it sounded like a no from me because the career / franchise stuff sounded a bit poo.
Sir Andy Mahowry
Same question but for Madden '23 please. :D

How much did you make?
None, it's kind of a league format where you get points based on performance and if you're ranked high enough you get invited to the seasonal finals for money.
However, that performance qualified me for a few other tournaments that do payout so we'll see.

I'll probably finish up Mafia Remastered tomorrow and I've largely enjoyed it. For a post-GTA open world crime thing, it feels very different to anything before or since. There's an open map but the story feeds you from mission to mission. It keeps the pace up and actually allows the slow, obey the law driving to give you a chance to relax. Plus I really like how the story is told. Takes it's story very seriously and, so far, it works really well. Got about five missions left but I'm told it sticks the landing.
EDIT: It sure does. Shame the missions are really rigid and the shooting is a bit awful on console.

Forgot to mention that I finished God of War. The story and the missions picked up hugely in quality after you get to a certain point and it became pretty good. Don't have much faith that I'll go back and do everything else mind.

A bit of both, partially struggling against a particularly aggressive style of play but also just better players. I get to semis I’m playing people 6-700 MMR above me. It’s about 18-20 MMR per win for reference so it’s quite a significant gap.

It's a bit of a shit demo, to be honest. Flashy moves without anything really taken at a normal pace. All bang, no context. Plus I'm really, really sick of the superhero/villain snark.
Speaking of demos (the playable knd) Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty has one out. I can finally make some sense of how that game works. Another Team Ninja souls-ish thing but with twists that make the combat really, really aggressive.
I don't think the context would help that everything in the Suicide Squad game looks entirely without any sort of weight heft. Movement, shooting, abilities all look really floaty and nothing-y. That and the giant purple glowing weak spots. And, of course, everybody's favourite aspect of Arkham Knight: tanks.

Embargo's up so I can talk more about Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. It's a second-rate Sekiro. Hitting parries is satisfying but the window's not quite reliable and certain bosses demand you master it. There's a ton of numbers in that game but you don't really build a character sheet. Gear, levels, all of it is secondary to a fortitude rank. A rank you can only build by raising flags in the levels and grinding enemies.
Still want to finish it but the boss I'm on is parry or die.

I've finished it twice with different co-op chums and I feel like unless I was doing something super specific this is the way I'd replay it, if I was playing afresh with another person playing it for the first time.
Still, Maz replaying OS2 then Witcher 3 is a very me thing to do and I applaud it.

Yeah OS2 turned into a bit of a slog in the end. Didn't help that I sort of inadvertedly made the exact same party, the exact same builds and all the exact same choices :D
Witcher 3 is showing it's years a little, but still getting by through ambiance and the fact that the colourful style could pass for a art choice if you squint a little.
When I did a playthrough of OS2 with two of my mates we got to the final bit and you've just had the whole speech of "who should really have the power of a god?" I said no and they were all "Yes I absolutely want the power of a god."
Annoying thing is I absolutely schooled both of them in the resulting fight (they'd been having me carry all the grenades and stuff including cursed grenades and everything else) but because I'd already said "Not for me, Clive" it didn't then give me the final say on what to do about it.
I dunno how many people would have actually played it in the competitive co-op way Larian pitched it but you could definitely have some fun and double-crosses in the home stretch if you did.

Yeah, I wasn't sure about what they'd do with something that was never more than a downloadable side story.
In the process of writing up Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty's review. A process hampered by me being shit at Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. :D There are some difficulty spikes in that game that are astounding. They're usually followed up with trivial missions which is cathartic, to say the least. Tons of systems at play but the combat can feel fairly basic with the majority of your attacks handled by one button. Movesets don't differ much despite the game swimming in gear and I've hit the inventory limit at the half-way stage.
It has a village hub level it doesn't need and it makes finishing sub missions a pain in the arse. "Want to go back to the village? How about your main battlefield?" How about you give me the mission menu? No? Fine, I'll warp the village so I can warp out of it to do something else. :moop:
It's a Sekiro mod for Nioh in every single sense but I'm still enjoying it. I just wish it was more focused instead of throwing systems upon systems. They're not all well explained either.

The month of PS+ Premium for a fiver is a cracking deal but a reminder why I don't have a regular subscription to the service. There's not a huge amount of choice there unless you really like some of the series which are very well represented (Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Lego) or what appear to be noncy Japanese RPGs, and the disposability of having all the games means I'll give one ten minutes or so and fuck it off. I think I'm just going to spend the rest of the month playing Miles Morales through

WWE 2K23 continues where the last game went off. Namely in this weird sense of flow where the game will decide you're going to take 4-5 moves without a chance to reverse any of them. And you'd better believe all those animations will play out at a glacial pace. Plus I don't think the controls are that responsive.

Well I drained the battery down from full charge to like 5% today, got just over 7 hours with 2D (GBA and SNES mostly)

Looked properly into the handhelds after your post.
The Way seems to generally be accepted that the Steam Deck is the best thing you can get in terms of affordable power in the form factor. Bonus that it plays modern titles well too.
For purely retro though it seems to depend if you want an old Game Boy style device or if you want a Switch Lite style device. It seems the hands down winner in the former category is the Miyoo Mini Plus. Problem being that they're so good and in demand they're almost never in stock. Anbernic do what is their own version of it but the build quality on theirs is more suspect. You'd be getting a plastic shell with either, but the upside is up to PS1 emulation for £80 or less depending on where you buy.
The RG353M looks great for what it is too. Almost none of the competition offers the metal shell and it seems this device took their build quality up a notch.
I've also noticed they're coming out with the RG405M soon which builds on the RG353 and basically just adds a bit of ergonomics, a bit more screen and you can do some PS2 gen emulation too.
Very torn between getting the entry level to see if I use it, or going the full hog and getting the latter one.

Love the look of these Anbernic handhelds, the upcoming one in particular (RG405M). What's the deal with the games though? I'm pretty exclusively looking at GameBoy, GameBoy Color and GameBoy Advance era, and also N64. How do you get hold of them, pre-loaded cards, etc?
Gray Fox

That's the one I'm looking at too. Looks about the best of everything.
I believe if you look on their site, it's a bit google translated English but it shows the listing as "Blue 16G + 64G/256G." From what I gather the latter is an SD card with as many games(ROMs) as they can pack onto it.
Alternatively you can do as DS did. He got his from Amazon. You pay a little chunk more on top for the convenience of having the next day shipping. You're also a lot more covered if you do buy one of the Prime eligible ones and there's a problem with it.
You can go about sourcing the games yourself as they aren't too hard to find, but I believe most of these kinds of devices come with all your in-demand titles loaded onto the SD card.
Dark Soldier
26-03-2023, 06:11 PM
Yeah they come with a varying amount of games. I got the 64gb card, has about 4500 games on. Mainly SNES, MD, GBA etc. Lack of Dreamcast, N64, PSP, PS1. Had some but not many. Mainly your big hitters, Mario, Sonic, Zelda, Metroid, Pokemon etc

26-03-2023, 08:03 PM
It's hard to tell as like I said it's kind of broken English, but my understanding is that as the device runs with two SD card slots. If you buy the 16G version, you're just getting the machine and the SD card with the operating system on it. Essentially a boot drive. The idea is then you go and get the ROMs you want.
If you order the secondary SD card too, then you will get the 3000+ games on it. As DS says, your main big hitters will be on there plus a selection of others.

I mentioned to the Mrs that I'd likely be buying one of the handhelds in April/Mays pay and showed her one. She's nabbed it as a birthday present idea for me as she didn't have a clue what to get me.
Plus side is it's a guilt free present for me now. Downside is I'm waiting a few more months. I suppose it gives them more time to get new devices out.

Oddly no Mario games on this, or Anbernic's cards. I removed the GC, PS2 as lol it ain't that powerful.and added some of my own PSP, PSX, Saturn and DC games. Also AM2R via port.
Saturn emu is hit and miss but that's the same even with a beefy PC.
Comes with full GBA, N64, SNES, MD, NES, Master System sets. Zelda on DS is in Japanese so will need to manually replace. Had an absolute fuck ton of MAME and arcade also.
Missing stuff like Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy 7 etc. DS jumps from B to P for some reason. Prob ran out of space, bur you can add whatever ya want yourself. DS emu is tricky though as need to imitate the stylus. You can emu in Android by removing OS SD card but with the two screens it's a faff.
Easy as to add and delete as the SD card is structured so its drag and drop.
Thing is glorious, just spent 2 hours on Outrun PSP.

The TLDR is: There's an evil corporation called Umbrella that turns people into zombies/zombie like people for some reason. Whatever no personality person you play this time round shoots hundreds of these people in the head over several hours while having to solve geometric puzzles in elaborately designed mansions/castles.

Did anyone play Donut County when it was on Gamepass at the start of the year? My daughters been playing it and it’s a very nice game. Identical art style to her favourite Apple Arcade game, Sneaky Sasquatch, which was what made her want to play it. You control a hole and must swallow everything on each level, getting bigger with every item. Starts off super easy but then introduces puzzles, like having to light fireworks, swallow it, move under something and they fire back out.
It somehow doesn’t have auto save on though so twice she’s gone back on it and started again. Seems happy to do so though.
I think I played it on Switch. Was good fun while being simple.

I'm right at the end of Resi 4 Remake now. Should finish it tonight.
The original, as we all know, was a masterpiece. It introduced a lot of the staple mechanics of third person action games, flowed well.
This improves in some areas. The island in particular which was a bit shit in the original on reflection. But it is lacking in some areas. Its kept some of the one liners but its gone for a weirdly realistic vibe a lot of the time, which feels like a weird juxtaposition to some of the insanity in the plot.
Gunplay is wonderful, visceral blowing bits off enemies, headsets are glorious. Ashley actually isn't a ballache to have around and her section is vastly improved.
Regenerators are fucking terrifying.
But...after all is said and done I'm ready for it to be over now. There's been some absolute 10/10 bits, some 7/10 bits. Some of the boss fights are weaker in comparison, some of the character and well, fun of the original is gone.
Unless it absolutely shites the bed at the end I'm comfortable giving it an 8.5. I've loved my time with it and will probably run through NG+ at some point down the line as some all powerful Leon, but as is the case with recent Resi games it feels like a one and done for me.

I also saw something on Steam called Wartales (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1527950/Wartales/) which also looks like it would satisfy my Dungeon Siege appetite, but it’s only on PC and I want to play on Xbox, really. But you really ought to play them, at least BG2. There are sure to be some characters that show up in BG3 so it's good for that.
I started with Greedfall, but I couldn't stand looking at the characters when they talk. Something so weird with the mouth animations that I couldn't look past for some reason that it just made the game uninteresting for me. But I never really made it out of the harbour you start in.

I'm wondering if the time is right to sell them on. They're just gathering dust now and the former two especially can be emulated perfectly by a device smaller than your smartphone now and for easily sub £100.

Every time I think about retro collecting, I'm reminded how maintaining carts sounds like a right ache. I'd rather emulate and not have things on a shelf that I'll never power up.

So after my Anbernic arrived borked, I got myself a Retroid Pocket 3+. Same chip, but larger screen, better Android build, etc. Plastic shell, but I'll probs use this for a couple of years then upgrade to a metal device once we have retro handhelds in the £100-£150 range that can handle PS2 fully. Not really got fully stock into it yet, but really like the device.

Yeah especially when I reckon I'd be well up around £200 in CeX store credit if I sold up to them. I could probably do better in cash by sticking them on Facebook/eBay etc but I'm not sure I want the hassle.
I would not mind turning them into something like a Switch. I want a handheld of some description. Though for that price I'd be looking a the Lite version and hoping CeX had one that wasn't scratched to fuckery.
The alternate is getting a retro handheld straight away but I was told to hold off on that so I had something for my birthday later in the year.

How much did you end up paying for that? And was the shipping experience better this time?

Got it off Droix.co.uk instead – £170 with 5% off, which basically made the postage free.

Got the EA PGA game as Amazon sent me some £5 off if you spend blah blah thing so it ended up costing me £45 of actual money. I'm not getting the hang of how the different shots work yet, some where I think I'm dinking it just shy of the pin end up clearing the green entirely. Putting remains a mystery to me but I've not been too far off with them so hopefully that knack will come. It looks and sounds the absolute business though, I love how there's a team of commentators just hanging out and occasionally popping their nose in to talk about particular shots and holes.

No issues with them?
I like the Pocket 3+ as the coloured plastic they do on one reminds me of the old Gameboy and N64 days, but I'd worry with the kids about that one bad drop could crack that thing.
The stacked shoulder buttons are also a plus, but then I don't believe they have hall sensor sticks which by itself is a major selling point.
I wouldn't have minded waiting for a revision, but their next device seems to be the Pocket Flip. Which is in the 3DS style.
We do however seem to be coming into a place where there's a good 3/4 companies trying to out-do each other on these, while even the big boys are starting to try and match the Steam Deck. They're also mostly in stock. As far as I know right now you can get all Anbernic devices without back ordering and even the Miyoo Mini Plus you can get sent straight away, so long as you don't mind the colour.
I'm going to properly price my retro stuff up in a bit to see what I could get.

They are doing a metal P3+ soon. Might be a good option. Re Droix - fine. They order in bulk from wherever and then sell on at a mark up in the UK. Service fine.

Got the new EA golf game.
Did some training and the first round in the starting amateur tournament.
Approach shots can be a bit hairy for me and I need to get better at putting. I seem to hit the ball far too softly every single putt.

The most annoying thing about EA Golf is that my swing seems to be slow almost every single shot.
On the 2K golf game it was almost always fast, even after doing the swing tuning thing about 18 times.

What swing setting did you set your golfer to?
Also wullie, smack the putts. Don't be scared to go a few feet beyond your math and then go over the stroke power. If you go too soft or to exact math you're gonna have a bad time.

I believe I selected fast, although when I went to knock it down it seemed to be at normal.

I saw something about adding a foot or a yard for each inch you go uphill and the opposite for downhill, with that itself in mind I seem to be having a bit more joy. I guess trial and error along with souping up my golfer will go the rest of the way

Yeah that's the general math for putting, but you can be a bit more courageous in this. Roll out isn't as bad as other games so you can slam the ball in and take a lot of the break out if you're not bother by a 6 footer or so on the way back.

The shot that catches me out most so far is pitch (I think), if I'm near the green I've got a horrible habit of overdoing it and shooting straight past the green and out the back. Flop however, that's my guy. I also love when you overpower the drive and get the dramatic animation, even when there's absolutely no call for the extra power
Dark Soldier
28-04-2023, 09:34 AM
Yeah flop is insanely good. If you can unlock the spinner too its basically pitch but much less roll out

A foot per inch? No wonder I keep coming up short.

Flop is a default one so you should have that, the only one I've unlocked as far as I know is Texas wedge which I've not tried, not brave enough for the idea of putting from half a mile out yet.
Sir Andy Mahowry
28-04-2023, 10:08 AM
I clearly haven't paid attention then.
I've also unlocked the Texas Wedge (tried once, it didn't end well), Roller (I can't seem to master it) and Pick which seems to work really well in bunkers.
wullie
28-04-2023, 10:10 AM
Ooh I'll have a look for pick, the only option I get in bunkers is blast which I appear to have absolutely no control over at all.
Dark Soldier
28-04-2023, 10:21 AM
You can control blast but you need to raise the club up to max loft, it'll minimise roll. Or use afterspin if you're playing with that on.
Texas Wedge is awesome. I just holed a 40 footer off the fairway.
Also do the daily/weekly/seasonal tournaments for big rewards.

Switch emu is hit and miss. BotW doesn't run that well on it so I wouldn't be expecting the new Zelda to be running good on launch mate.
Been playing Mario Odyssey and I am a fan of it basically being Hats: The Game. I am of course having Mario run about in his boxers.

The Switch does quite desperately need an upgrade to its internals. Which is a shame as otherwise it's basically the perfect gaming system.
It's quite annoying as I want one but don't want to shell out for one and then to announce the next one in a year.

Just had a really good effort on the weekly tournament at Teeth of the Dog in EA Gold.
-1 which isn't amazing but I did have a triple bogey on one hole because I kept finding the water off the tee.
I hit some really nice putts as well, seems I'm getting my eye in there.
On tour difficulty and I really smashed the back 9. It also seems it was quite tough for others as the -1 is good for 710th right now so I should get some decent rewards.

Gone back to shit today on golf.
Missing so many putts and my approach shots are constantly bouncing much further than I anticipate.
Went into the Q-School tournament on -7 after 3 rounds and leading by 1 shot to dropping to evens after round 4. Thankfully the AI seemed to be shitting the bed and I finished 10th or something so I'm on the Korn Ferry finally.
Really need to work on getting my control attribute up.
