If you have even a half decent PC just emulate and save yourself 300 quid. BotW in ultrawide at 120fps with graphical improvements, draw distance and AA is a thing of beauty.

Metroid Dread as well.

Oh yeah, that one was alright, I guess.

And Bayonetta 3's coming out.

Or so I've been hearing for the past three years. Not that I care. I played Bayonetta 2 and it just wasn't my thing.

Every time some indie stuff is cheap on Switch, I consider it but without pulling the trigger. It' a Nintendo exclusives machine to me. Maybe, maybe I bother with Monster Hunter Rise if I ever get down that hole.

I'm on a 9700k and 2080ti running in 2560x1080.

Just get a recent CEMU setup guide on YouTube, and a USB Helper guide. Download em both. If you're at all savvy with PCs it's like an hour setup dependent on your download speed with USB Helper. CEMU uses Vulkan for texture compilation so it's fast as. Running it with Xbox controller, just means like 3 shrines you can't really do with motion controls, unless you have a PS controller with emulates it.

USB Helper basically connects to the Nintendo store and downloads everything for free (lol).

It's Wii U emu but runs like a fucking dream. You'll need the below for the key for USB Helper:

https://titlekeys.ovh/

Switch emu is also banging, did Metroid Dread in 4k 60fps when I was on my 4k monitor. Runs most things at 60fps improved res, Yuzu is best for that. BOTW Switch isn't up to speed yet but not needed cos of CEMU

When you've got it all set up just right click on the game in CEMU and you can change draw distance, aliasing, basically everything.

Dark Soldier
14-10-2022, 10:45 PM
This was my set up running it in 4k three years back before CaeMU made loads of improvements. Near locked 60 back then. Wii U emulation really isn't taxing as its piss weak hardware to begin with. Similarly Switch.

I believe they do. I've full emulation up to the Gamecube via my Xbox Series S. It, again, is a piece of piss to set up with Retroarch. Microsoft don't even stop ya.

Just search Retroarch retail mode Series S or X on YouTube if you have one and are interested. PS2, PS1, Dreamcast, GC and all the older games as long as you supply roms.

Played through Windwaker in 1440p last month no bother.

Breath of the Wild is very moreish. There are some things about it which annoy me a little in terms of systems they've put in that don't actually make things more fun or engaging but on the whole I an very much enjoying it and the Divine Beasts in particular are a highlight so far.

Thought the weapon degradation would be annoying but it turns out the weapons aren't fun enough for it to matter anyway if you lose one, provided you've been storing up stronger ones for a tough fight when you need it.

God of War Ragnofuck: about 10 hours in and a bit bored, it's already feeling way too long. Writing is good, combat less refined and a bit of a mess and Kratos' son is an annoying cunt.

Elden Ring: Second playthrough, still the absolute GOAT game.

Callisto Protocol: Feel it was unfairly maligned just because it wasn't Dead Space. Melee combat is brutal, nicely written, and it's the second best looking game I've ever played after Cyberpunk maxed out on PC.

The Many a True Nerd video for Callisto Protocal suggested that the jeopardy is taken out of the melee dodging system as soon as you realise that if you just start every fight (against the mooks, at least) holding a direction then you'll be absolutely fine.

My general experience is that if a game is this divisive then it's basically a 6.5/10 which one lot have decided is a manky turd and one lot have decided is an underappreciated megaclassic and must be defended to the death.

I am loving it but I would say that it is in a bit of a niche area for general gamers. The facebook groups have been flooded with new owners who don't have an understanding of pc gaming etc. If you don't mind a little bit of tweaking here and there it is great, but some people seem to think it was just a switch pro.

Hadn't been too buggy for me up until this point. I had thought it was because I ended the mission in a funky way (created a portal then pushed the last remaining goon through the portal off the building) but when I tried a "normal" KO approach it still crashed.

Finished Triangle Strategy yesterday. It was pretty good, in the end. The battles were fairly challenging, although the AI is a bit shit. Very often I felt like I won via cheesing my way through the moronic AI as opposed to coming up with some amazing tactics. I feel a bit tempted to try some of the other paths, but I most likely will never bother.

Now onto Tactics Ogre Reborn until the new Fire Emblem comes out.

So far it has been the opposite of Triangle Strategy. The beginning of TS was too heavy on the story with few battles. TOR has so far been a bunch of random battles held together by a semblance of a story which I can't really be arsed to try to follow. More time is needed to judge it properly.

Midnight Suns has the exact same fiendish, time devouring loop as XCOM. But with an added RPG hub. Bastards I think given the missions I've seen so far aren't that dynamic it makes sense that they've kept them short and punchy (arf) and just like a big old scrap rather than trying to drag them out too much.

It's quality, but it's a HUGE timesink and takes a bit of getting into. Took me like 300 hours to do the main story + post story monsters (including Iceborne).

If you do buy it, there'll be armour and weapons available to you called "Defender" gear. They were made to allow people to speed through the base game to get to Iceborne when it released. They are completely overpowered in the base game and make the difficulty trivial; I would not using them or you'll start Iceborne and realise you absolutely suck.

Indeed.

I've only done one of the Showcase (Rey Mysterio vs Kane) and its really well done. Gameplay seems simple enough to keep me interested, and the amount of great downloadable AEW wrestlers is great. Not being able to use them in MyRise (career mode) is plain dumb though. Do you know if downloaded custom wrestlers ever feature in MyRise, as NPCs?

True, but the entire point of the game is the difficulty of the monsters and the sense of achievement from beating them. The story is wank, so if you just speed through it with overpowered gear you are missing 90% of what makes the game enjoyable (the remaining 10% being autistic min/maxing for gimps like me).

You'll also hit a massive wall if/when you start Iceborne (when the defender gear becomes useless and you realise you never actually learned how to play).

Can you take a wrestler from scratch and career mode him to the top?Yes it's called MyRise.

Seems like your MyRise creation is LOCKED IN to that mode though, so you can't use a real wrestler, can't use a downloader wrestler, and seemingly can't have a singles match against your mate using your MyRise bloke.

My plan is to download Kenny Omega, take a photo of every page of his moveset, then follow a Youtube tutorial to make him. Then take him to the top.

Submission is button bashing but the button changes between A/B/X so you've gotta keep switching. It's good. Kicking out of pin is bashing A. I think its a good system.

Blocking/reversal is mostly hitting Y at the right time. Or matching whether they choose X/A/B in a grapple - if you guess correct, you reverse it.

I imagine playing against another person is a reversal spotfest though, but that's always been the case since the Smackdown games days.

If anyone wants the xbox deluxe version for £20 gimme a shout and I'll speak to my source.

I'm 7 hunts into my Monster Hunter World power fantasy. The fight with the Anjanath wound up tricky as I fainted once and was desperate to keep track of it between stages. By the looks of it, even with the trivial armour and weapons, I've got another 25 hours ahead of me. I consider that still a sizeable chunk of the monster hunting experience, even if it's still a whistle-stop tour. I'd rather take this than bash my head against it for the third time and drop it. I'm still crafting other armour sets and doing side stuff mainly to give me something decent for when I do decide to revisit the old quests.

So far the only thing I don't like is how it throws so many systems at you very early. And the hub's still a mess for me to navigate. Just let me hand these bounties back in from a list. Don't make me find the guy. "Are you the botanist I need to speak to? Where's the research bloke?"

Wildermyth is an impressive thing. Sort-of procedural RPG storytelling still managing to create some top stories and character moments is quite a feat, and I love the amount of strange stuff that can happen to your characters. I've got a ranger who literally can't use a bow any more because one arm got transformed into a taloned crow foot/arm claw thing and the other, in a separate side-quest, she bunged into an element forge and it gave that arm a fire enchantment which is basically a flamethrower so she's now basically a totally unique class, which holds its own without breaking the combat. A very cleverly put together game.

Are you not doing Iceborne? Where are you actually up to? The post-story stuff in the base game isn't necessary (or honestly particularly worth doing) before starting Iceborne.

I'm up to the Pink Rathian hunt and I feel like the defender gear has outstayed its welcome. I've got the base game and have no intention to buy Iceborne.

Lol you've got fucking miles to go yet, that's about 2/3 of the way through.

Defender gear is the best gear in base game. Time to GIT GUD.

Meh. Maybe I just don't care enough to plough 100 hours into this. I see the appeal but there's a couple of dumb things I get irritated by:

- Two big monsters fighting should not break off their scrap within seconds for them both to turn their attention on you. They love to do that.
- Having to clear smaller monsters during a hunt just to activate the scout flies again. Mildly irritating.

I may go back to it but I'd rather play games I genuinely like.

randomlegend
27-01-2023, 11:18 PM
Yeah fair enough. I can definitely see it's not a game everyone is going to fall in love with.

I do honestly think the defender gear somewhat ruins the experience though.

I spent four/five hours playing God of War (2018) tonight. Am I the only person in the World who thinks it's a bit shit? I loved the PS2 and PS3 ones, for their exploration, combat, World and enemies, whereas this just felt like walking into one samey section after another, engaging in boring combat, against tanky or tedious as fuck adversaries, before moving onto another section to rinse and repeat.

I played it once, for a similar length of time, ejected the disc and sold it.

Shindig

I'm not that keen on the combat. It's got that Sony prestige whiff about it. Everything looks nice but the fights are all in these 'tighter than they should be' arenas and Kratos has lost some of his mobility. I whacked it on easy to just to enjoy the story.

I've already pre-ordered it.

I've started on Gotham Knights to try and sneak that in before Hogwarts.

Haven't played too much yet but it seems alright. Fast travel would be nice (it has it but it seems a little annoying to unlock from checking) and it feels a little clunky especially when moving and combat can be a little wonky at times but the story is alright so far.

It's absolutely not as good as the Arkham series (especially the first two) but I don't think it deserves the hate it's been getting.

PS3 next, no doubt. What a console.

I just saw a few minutes of the gameranx (iirc) one. Now the game itself looks shit, but even in the video (in the first 90 seconds no less) the reviewer is telling us how if you're a hardened gamer you might find things to take issue with, but don't worry, it's an amazing game.

Aren't 'hardened gamer's' basically their entire viewer base? I'm smelling bullshit here.

It looks like another fairly average open world action game, because everyone was crying out for another one of those.

Talking of which (even though it isn't really open World so far) I'm persevering with God of War and it's one of the most up and down games I've ever played. It seems to veer from incredible set pieces to downright awful boss fights (like some of the worst I can recall) and they've genuinely copied and pasted the same boss about four times so far.

It's good, I think, but I genuinely don't understand how it got the praise it did and for me, it doesn't seem finished.

I hated God of War. Gave it about half an hour but I couldn't get on with the combat at all. It felt shite. Probably didn't help that I came to it off the back of Middle-earth: Shadow of War which has excellent combat.

The sequel is an absolute mess though and I've given up after 10 hours.

Dark Soldier

It's a seemingly endless loop of cutscene > a few fights down open but linear areas > retrieve new person > cutscene, rinse and repeat.

They haven't refined the combat, only chucked more stuff on. Thr AI literally tell you the answers to puzzles (not that they're difficult) within 5 seconds of discovering them, and they never shut the fuck up trying to assist you. Its full of bloat and maximising systems and add ons to armor and smug writing and please stop.

It's gorgeous to look at, it just feels like it's a regression from the quite tight first.

On Ragnarok? As last time I played it there wasn't, it launched without. Caused backlash as on Horizon they had that option

Guess that patched it in as I've not touched it since before Christmas, which is some relief at least.

Edit: Can't find any news of that on Ragnarok.

I went back to BOTW after about a month away from it and it didn't give me the spark of renewed enthusiasm I was hoping for.

It's a technically spectacular thing that increasingly left me quite cold. I can get to Hyrule Castle now though so I may as well try and see it through.
