I got The Last of US on PS4 as I never completed it on the PS3 and I just had a huge seethe.

I had cleared out the subway station bit of all clickers and was just going round beating the shit out of runners, I was bitchslapping one when Tess decides to stroll over and shoot it. Cue the last clicker coming over and biting me in the neck.

Stupid bitch.

And have taken a machine gun to people within minutes of arriving. It makes no sense.

Yeah, I've talked about how odd this is. The guy in the FC3's arc isn't very realistic but at least once he pretends that he's a bit messed up about having to kill people.

In this game it's basically:
"Ajay!"
"I'm just here to scatter my mum's ashes."
"Yeah but could you kill a whole shitload of folk for us first?"
*sigh* "Alright then."

It's a videogame, the plots are almost always uniformly awful and never stand up to any sort of scrutiny.

Not all of them have the writers blathering on about how meaningful they are though.

Yep, Ubisoft are particularly bad at that. But then they don't seem to have much clue what to do with a game beyond making incredible environments.

The last two in particular end up feeling like less than the sum of their parts, as much as I enjoyed 3 and am enjoying 4 so far.

Its a shame they didn't stick with Far Cry 2's direction. You could infer a lot from that African setting and you didn't need to justify what the character does because its all part of the job description. I wonder how 'by committee' Far Cry is put together these days. I don't think they're on Assassins Creed levels with that, at least.

Demerit
07-11-2015, 12:14 PM
I'm very worried with Far Cry. I thought number one was excellent on PC, number two was a massive game with so much to do, the setting was excellent, the characters were great.

Far Cry 3 was a good game, but I never completed it as I think I got hooked on something else and I never tried Far Cry 4.

Primal is out early next year, and it's all becoming a bit Assassins Creed-lite.

Standard Ubisoft rushing out their games year after year, I just wish they'd take a little more time over them to develop something other than the worlds.

Can't in FC4 either. The absolute hallmark of a development team who are too determined to ram their story down your throat.

We'll talk about it in more depth once you've done but the spoiler-free short answer is: Fuck yes, they really, honestly do.

Far Cry 3 - There don't seem to be any story missions appearing on the map any more and it kept telling me to go talk to Hurk. So I did and did a few missions for him. Now he's moved to the second island and it won't allow me to travel there yet but there are still no story missions showing on the first island. Do I need to story quests or something? I also can't fast travel at the minute for some reason.

Are you currently on a mission or something? I never had any of the DLC, so can't help you too much. Googled it?

Boydy
08-11-2015, 08:24 PM
I don't think so. There are no indicators on the map for objectives and I'm able to start quests and stuff.

Although that mission where you have to go chase the helicopter after you've had all your weapons taken and then you have to go get your equipment back afterwards. I died on the getting the equipment back part and then quit the game thinking it'd be saved at the last checkpoint and whenever I got back to it, it'd pick up from there. But it didn't so maybe it thinks I'm still on that mission or something? I have no idea.

Was also just doing that mission where you have to collect the document fragments in that lab. I got shocked as I turned the power on to get the lift working to go down to the next level and the shock just seemed to keep repeating itself over and over even when I wasn't touching stuff that was electrified so my health was just constantly draining. I'm guessing that's not meant to happen. The whole thing seems a bit buggy.

Also, is there a way to turn off the GPS route that comes up on your minimap when you choose a waypoint? Driving to a location without knowing which route to take was one of the best parts of FC3. Now I'm bottle-fed exactly how to get there. :moop:

Really odd. Have you tried going back to the spot where the pirates with your equipment were to see if you can somehow force the mission to completion? And do you have all your 'stuff' back? Or go to Citra's temple and see if you can force the next quest to begin somehow. The second island is pretty cool, so it'd be a shame if the game is too broken to continue.

Yeah I died the first time, felt like there was a crazy amount of guys coming at me that time, though.

Question: how do I progress the main story? I just did a mission for Sabal (burning the opium fields), but now there's no markers on the maps for him / Amita / Golden Path, and there's nothing to indicate what to do next. Am I meant to return to Banapur or something?

Ian
12-11-2015, 09:40 PM
There ought to be a permanent icon about the edge of your map of some sort, whether it's the yellow crossed swords or a letter for a mission. Might be that you have to do the one with the two stoner twats, which is at a greenish 'Y', Longinus (don't think those are ever mandatory but I might be wrong) or... I'm sure there's another. If it's not the golden path logo, though, it'll be a colourful letter of some variety.

12-11-2015, 09:43 PM
Ok cheers, I think there's a Y somewhere on my map so I guess I'll check that out. I don't think I've encountered any stoner twats yet. There's far too much stuff on the map I think, all the location markers are rather pointless and just make it harder to find what you want. I reckon the FC3 interface was much better all round. I also don't like the way they just have one screen for weapons - I want my weapons divided into categories. :moop:

Ian
12-11-2015, 09:45 PM
Do some outposts and shit.

I'd that it's a wise move to knock these off at a faster rate of knots than the main story early doors.

I'd also advise you get a gyrocopter before heading to that Y because there's a not especially taxing but slightly dull rock climb to get there.

CJay
12-11-2015, 09:48 PM
I'd that it's a wise move to knock these off at a faster rate of knots than the main story early doors.

Why is that, to progress the story? I like trying to accomplish things in heavily-infested enemy territory. Do enemies still show up in areas even once you've cleared outposts? If they do then I guess I don't have to worry about that. In 3 once you cleared an outpost you were safe to do whatever the hell you wanted in that area, which was a bit boring for me.

Ian
12-11-2015, 09:52 PM
I like having hubs and unlocking the sidequests and stuff. The enemy still knock about a bit more than they did in Far Cry 3 and you'll get the Pagan's Wrath convoys and the odd attack on an outpost (though I don't think they can reclaim them if you ignore it, which is a shame) to keep it not quite such a yawn as it was in 3 once you'd cleared an area.

I'm also not sure how much I can be bothered doing the rest of the Shangri-La stuff, which is a shame given how visually striking it is. And how cool it is setting a stealth-tiger-ghost on dudes.

EDIT: Also I've just unlocked the auto-crossbow thing as well as some weapon that's a sort-of sniper rifle but a) is loud and b) doesn't zoom far. Seems more like a range option (and it hits like a fucking train) you'd take if you were intentionally going on loud.

Not tried the auto-cross yet but I suspect I'll miss the versatility offered by the different arrows. I'm more likely to switch it in for the STG-90 (I think that's the one I mean) rather than the bow.

From my recent purchasing binge:

Ronin: Good. Not as good as gunpoint, but still plenty enjoyable. Some of the scenarios seem impossible to perform perfectly, and you can't replay missions without restarting. Sometimes it feels a bit arbitrarily nasty, but once you get the mechanics, it's really enjoyable. There's a particular pleasure to be gained from replaying levels repeatedly in order to come up with the most "elegant" solution. The most important thing you really need to internalize is that stealth is largely not the way to play, and you'll have more success if you just try and take everyone out as efficiently as possible.

Botanicula: I'm about three-quarters of the way through, and I love it. The puzzles aren't that complicated, but the art is beautiful, and the easter eggs are bountiful. The whole story is conveyed largely without words, and it's pretty easy to follow. I'm looking forward to the big finish.

Undertale: I started it, then put it down in favour of the other two. The perfectionist in me keeps wanting to try and win every fight without fighting, but this doesn't seem like a sensible way to go through. I'll get back to it after Botanicula.

I completed the main story in GTA V just now. Definitely didn't want it to end. I'm still only at about 78% complete, so there are a few side missions etc. still to complete. The story was good, seemed to slow down about halfway through, but progressed quickly enough towards the end.

My main frustration came after failing a mission. I'm sure they were 'dumbed down' after a couple of failed attempts. Less people to kill etc.

I can't imagine I'll play through again, but it's GTA so it'll be good to come back to and just mow people off the pavement once in a while.

Aha, that's interesting. Cheers for the tip. I've only had one encounter with a fortress so far, where I drove too close to it and they started firing mortars all over the place. I actually jumped a little when the first one went off very near my jeep.

I unlocked the Bull yesterday. Rolling with the Stinger, Bull, PKM and Recurve Bow at the minute. Plenty of variety in those four weapons, although I'm looking to unlock a better LMG soon. One that doesn't take 5 minutes to reload.

Oh yeah, missions that involve a lot of grappling suck. I hate that aspect of the game. I don't find it fun at all.

Disco

I'm using the unique Scorpion and AK(?) plus a bolt action, silenced sniper and normally an RPG although I may well swap that for a decent LMG once I get one. Conversely I love the rock climbing, I'm basically just tooling around the map collecting things at the moment and scaling cliffs and rootling through caves is a nice distraction. The number of snakes and honey badgers laying in wait at the top of big climbs can bugger off though.

Giving the ridiculous drum fed machine pistol a go, although I kind of resent taking a weapon simply for dealing with shitty animals but the endless stream of dogs, wolves, and leopards makes it a necessity. Rather ironically I've now found two locations that are marked as poachers camps, which is all kinds of lol when you consider the eagle death toll alone would put the Khmer Rouge to shame.

Ian
17-11-2015, 05:51 PM
The Shredder is my best friend. Silent, not too shabby range-wise and fucks over anything stupid enough to get close to me pretty sharpish so it's good as my default carrying weapon. I have the sidearm grenade launcher for versatility and giving me more options elsewhere.

After that I'm mixing things up a bit. The crossbow is more fun than I expected. It lacks the range or variety of the recurve (which I swap it with depending on mood) but it gives a nice satisfying thunk and gives you more margin for error.

Lastly I usually have the better of the signature sniper rifles but it gets switched if I take a fancy for trying something else.

I like the signature shotgun for that. Honey badgers get smashed in one shot because of it's power.

Also, here's a tip for hunting. Often I go to a location where an animal is, but I can't find them, or can't find enough of them. If you throw bait, however, they'll come running straightaway. I guess it only works for whatever animals are attracted by bait, though? I'm almost fully stocked on all the upgrades now, although I still have to get four Demon Fish skins, which will probably be a bit tricky.

Shiiiiiiit, that's great. I also found the burst fire pistol (which takes a silencer) to be pretty good but the ammo pool is a bit too low to make it very practical.

Almost half the outposts done now. Just had a great one with two alarms, sniped one from one side of the camp and while they were carpeting my position with mortars and running about I legged it all the way round and snuck in the back to disable the other one. Cue a hasty retreat and picking dudes off one by one from afar.

Bloodborne picked up the pace with two more bosses down. Witches get stitches and Vicars get... I dunno, stabbed. I'm still none the wiser about the story. Everyone's putting way too much faith in the Healing Church which makes me think they're bent or straight up evil. I dunno what the Old Ones are but if you roll around Cathedral Ward with 40 insight, there's a big 'something' clutching on to the chapel. I don't care for Lovecraft but, man, that's an image. On to Bergenwyrth. Wherever that is. I'll ask NPCs for directions or something.

For all the mysteries these games trade in, at least Dark Souls shoved you in the right direction and fed you enough backstory to give context to what you were doing. So far its "You're a Hunter. Hunt." and the townsfolk are either off their tits on blood (Damn you, Healing Church!) or shit-talking hunters for being hunters. And I wish there was more to the NPCs. They lack a bit of history.

My problem was getting round to the slaves, I was always spotted. Oh and I wasn't listening to how the mission was meant to be done at the start so I went all in with my grenade launcher.

First slave I freed seemed to make every enemy know exactly where I was which was annoying.

When I was leaving with the fucker I didn't put him down once. I died the first time as I accidentally grenade launched myself but the second I just lobbed loads of bait round and whilst walking I kept throwing grenades as well as using my launcher. I think I cleared almost the whole camp.

Ian - they get weakened when you deal with the fortress' leader, so once you did City of Pain de Pleur's fortress was weakened.

I died twice in the City of Pain when trying to free the slaves, but thankfully both times I was discovered just as I was about to free one, so it gave me the checkpoint both times. You need to remember to use those hunting syringes that show where every enemy is - they're so useful. It's a pity the mechanism for using them on the XB1 is so janky.

He arrives as a tourist, is rescued from an attack by the Golden Path and having met their leaders immediately runs off into the countryside and takes on a well equipped army on his own. Blows up convoys, attacks manned outposts and all whilst wearing gear he made himself from the skins of animals he killed.

At some point I'm going to rock back up to the rebels looking for work draped in bloody skins having gunned down hundreds of soldiers. They're going to wonder who the fuck they've let into their country.

Ajay's introduction to the yarn makes so little sense I've taken to pretending he's actually rotting in Pagan Min's rape dungeon and this is all just a dream he's having. Far Cry 2 you were a dude in a shithole who happened to be handy in a scrap.

Far Cry 3 you were given magical tattoos to turn you into a killing machine and had the motivation of the wrong'uns killing his brother.

Ajay turns up, gets kidnapped and told some stuff and sees a few people killed and basically just decides he's going to be a superhero. And the Golden Path are no better. Rather than use Ajay and his name as some sort of motivational figure head they just assume he's an 80s action hero, give him some gear and shove him in the direct of the nearest army-manned deathtrap.

Just powered through to clear out the fortresses (Min's is disappointingly routine once you've sussed the easiest way to get the trickiest alarm taken out) and radio towers because I wanted the big LMGs.

In terms of fun my favourite method so far has been picking off the alarms from afar and then head in and taking people out with a mixture of firepower and takedowns. There'd be some replay value in the fortresses (and outposts to a lesser extent) just trying different tactics and loadouts. Really I still want to try and do one proper stealth but the sightlines on some of them and the patrols routes would mean you're either relying on a bit of luck or just far more patience than I have for a game where stealth isn't really the name of the game.

Looking forward to trying out the buzzsaw on my next session though.

Out of interest has anybody found themselves siding with Amita during those choices?

I have not. It's tough but in a really predictable binary way. What Amita wants is actually best but she doesn't give a fuck how it happens. Sabal's Kyrat will probably end up like Pagan's in the long run if somebody doesn't then take power from him but at least he's not a wannabe heroin baron.

Ian
22-11-2015, 03:22 PM
The buzzsaw isn't one I'll keep with me all the time. Partly for that reason, partly because "point at the bad people until they fall over" weapons in general are limited use. If I was to replay the fortresses and go noisy I'd use it, that sort of thing.

* This is the one on shakiest ground as I could just start using explosive arrows in place of it, however it is rather handy having it there to shoot stuff while driving/gyrocoptering.

The choices I've had so far (I'll nest the spoilers so nobody should stumble on anything they haven't seen.)

Choice 1
Amita wants you to get intel instead of saving an outpost, though the intel may not actually be of any use. Sabal wants to save the outpost/village.

I went for the latter, knowing that because-videogames the intel would lead to something but treating it as a 'real' decision, unless there's a definite reason to sacrifice a bunch of people I'm not going to do it.

Sided with Sabal.

Choice 2
Sabal wants to burn the opium fields to the groun, Amita wants to just kill the military forces and continue to farm opium to fund the revolution, as well as schools, etc.

Dithered over this one. Already didn't like either of them by this point so it's just down to deciding which of them is being less of a dick. Sabal wants to do what is in this instance the right thing but it's probably an empty gesyire. Amita's ends justifying the means is all well and good but like fuck am I actively going to help them make heroin. Sorry, Amita, mate.

Choice 3
Basically the same decision. I already said no, Amita. I basically like you more than I like Sabal, just, so if you could stop being such a dick about everything that'd be nice.

Hopefully they surprise me a bit with the next choice options.

From a simple tale about bloodlust to... some weird extra terrestrial madness. Nightmare Frontier can do one. Respawning hunter fights. No ta. Same goes for Unseen Village proper. Some good lols in that mini-sesh of me and Mahow. It did somewhat descend into us trying to kill each other. He also kept getting spawned in stupid places, including mid-air while I was wingsuiting and directly in a fire when he first joined my game.

My favourite, though, was the gyrocopter. Mahow never drives but seemed awfully keen to run to the gyrocopter so I knew he was going to fly away without me. Lobbed a stick C4 on it and just waited until he was "getting away." :D

And as Cjay said above, the Buzzsaw really is a gamebreaker. Even if you hit them in the body it kills heavies in about a third of a second. Daft. I won't be taking it with me on story missions.

I'm really wanting to like The Order:1886, but it's not giving me much opportunity. Before it was released it was one of the games I was most looking forward to, but I've obviously since read the reviews and lowered expectations a little. Even still, disappointed.

Out with the gun-fighting, combat is awful and basically just a game of reacting quickest to the on-screen prompts. The whole thing just feels like a giant cut-scene with you just expected to get from A to B shooting now and again. Which is a shame, because the storyline actually seems pretty good at the moment.

I don't like the way you can't jump, hide or take out a gun without the game telling you it's an appropriate time to do so. Picking up another weapon is a pain in the arse as well. There's nothing to tell you whether it has more ammo than your current one, so you end up picking it up just to put it down again. When you're in a gun-fight, that's too much time wasted.

I am trying to like it, but it's just not happening at the moment.

It certainly gets a lot more hectic on this front once you get into the North. I turned at one point to see Mahow getting set upon by about five wolves not long after we'd been harrassed by some other gang of furry yobs. And the bigger lads (bears, rhinos) seem to be in pairs more often.

Yeah the enemies are tougher (even the regular grunts have better body armour and take something sturier to kill them with anything other than a headshot) but yeah, as above, by that point your guns are good enough to balance things out in all but the most chaotic situations.

Still, got the best sniper rifle now and used it to successful snipe out a helicopter pilot. Also shot a guy in the chest.... and one-shotted the yak behind him with the same shot.

Finished The Order: 1886 tonight. Not very long is it?! Which is a shame because I actually quite enjoyed the story.

Gameplay-wise, it got better as it went on, because you got more involved, but the whole thing is still massively flawed. Stealth kills are awful, combat is awful (waiting for on-screen prompts, really!?) and there is quite literally no opportunity to explore anywhere. The best part of it was being involved in a gun-fight, but once you found a rifle you can pretty much just sail through. There were some decent other guns, but half of them took far too long to shoot and load, you were dead if you used them.

The lycans were pointless and not seen enough. The final 'battle' was one of the worst things I've ever had to do - a test of your reaction time in pressing buttons more than anything skill-based.

It did, however, look fucking amazing.

Thankfully I only paid £15 for it otherwise I'd have been raging.

Far Cry 4 finished and I've done everything I want to do as well, I think.

Ending:
I just killed him. I hesitated because there were more than a few moments toward the end when I began to wonder what the point of it all had been as Kyrat is going to continue to be a cesspit regardless of who's in charge, really. I ended up with Amita in charge. Hmm. Didn't kill Sabal though, which will probably just make things worse when he returns and the fighting starts all over again.

On the whole I think Far Cry 3 was the better game but I did enjoy this very much.

With good reason. The PC re-release got extra mission types which made the game less barebones. At release it was literally, "Go here, eavesdrop then carry out the VERY SPECIFIC assassination we've outlined for you."

Playing AC on 360, not PC, Shinners.

And I think it's probably as much as anything that people have got more used to open world games since it was released. The game presents you with that mission: "go here, climb a thing, listen to a guy, pick a pocket, perform the assassination, gg" but I've been messing around with different ways of doing them and it's a lot more varied than people give it credit for. Yeah, there's usually the stealth hidden blade "correct" way to do it, but the game doesn't punish you for turning any of the assassinations into a brawl either (except that sometimes the target runs away, but you can always catch him).

I think people were so used to linear narrative games pre-360/PS3 generation that it never occurred to most people that they had a lot more freedom than they were expecting, so they did the least they had to do to get to the next story bit and didn't bother messing around. And it's really not a game that benefits from being rushed.

Although no doubt all of the systems need a lot of polish.

Also very impressed that the bomb missions don't have silly time limits or anything, I think the various side missions might be some of the best bits of the game, maybe even the ones that make you use the shitty bow.

More Longinus next as a delaying tactic because I suspect the mission that's popped up for Noore is going to be rescuing her mates and I can smell a 'you must do it this way' stealth mission a mile off. Sided with Sabal (or Sable as I cannot stop thinking whenever he's mentioned) for the heroin quest because Amita must lack eyes, ears, and possibly a brain if she thinks there's no other industry in not-Tibet. It's fucking stunning and full to bursting with the rarest animals on earth, not to mention the already installed climbing rigs everywhere. Call Thomas Cook, problem solved. I remember riding over to Min's fortress and thinking 'I really wouldn't like to live here'.

It was like the north of England but somehow even worse.

So its a choice of Alien Isolation or Dark Souls 2 as my next game.

Having smashed Bloodborne and deciding it's close to one of the best games I've ever played, will Dark Souls be a little bit of a let down now?

Don't play Dark Souls 2. I put over a hundred hours into it so odd to have me complain about it but compared to Bloodborne or DkS 1 its shambolic and awful. If you can, somehow, get a hold of Dark Souls 1 and be absolutely fricking amazed.

Ian It's not that I didn't like it as such, the way the orcs would remember if you ran away from a fight or tried setting them on fire etc was pretty cool.

Taking one under your control and getting promoted was fun aswell.

Shindig Watched a few DS2 reviews on YouTube and they all seem to agree with you on that DS2 is a good game but the weakest of the series.

Maybe the fact I've never played the first game ill enjoy it more than the people who had higher expectations of the game.

Darks Souls 3 is on the horizon so looking forward to that.

Or I could just splash the cash on the DLC for Bloodborne?!?!?

I feel like I'm playing 2 just to plug the lore gaps in preparation for 3. Dark Souls 1 is magnificent.

Dragonrider down on the first try so I'm back where I left off. Found No Man's Wharf which seems to have some fodder in it. Ring of Binding equipped too so I can let the effigies stock up.

Booted up Sleeping Dogs for the first time tonight. Did the first mission and some stick up and delivery one. Good fun so far, I'm liking the fighting style. The best bit is the brutal takedowns when you grapple someone. I do enjoy throwing a guy down a ventilation shaft. :D The driving doesn't feel like the greatest, but still plenty of fun.

There are loads of cut scenes it seems, but mercifully we're allowed to skip them.
Nick did you end up buying it?

Yeah, I did in the end - along with Far Cry 4.

It arrived today actually. I may get some time to play in later this evening, but if not, it'll be tomorrow.

Bought Oddworld New & Tasty.

Computer can't deal with it. Putting it on the backburner, and going back to the original. :D

I reckon I'm going to like Far Cry Primal. Taming animals to do my dirty work.

Aye, take it you saw the video? It'll be interesting to see what variety of weapons you can use. I'm not sure how enjoyable it will be without the ability to blow stuff up, though. In case anyone missed it:

I'd be astonished if there isn't magic or some hand-wavey mix of natural hocus pocus ingredients to create explosions of some sort.
