I've been playing the original Resident Evil (well, the HD remaster) over the last couple of days. I've never played it before, 4 was my original point of entry I believe. Anyway, I've not really got very far. I never have a fucking clue where I'm going in that bastard mansion.:moop:

Resident Evil 3 gets a lot more palatable once you ditch the city. Shame I needed a guide to determine which Nemesis fights were avoidable.
I'm loving the "puzzle" element of Heat Signature, in the way that Hotline Miami is sort of a puzzle, or can feel like one. I'll often just use one or two items to get me through but have other useful stuff on me, and then shit is about to go horribly wrong so you pause and have a look at what you have and often there is a way out of it. Maybe not to complete the mission or all the objectives but at least to stop anything worse happening.

Apex Legends, a Battle Royale game from the Titanfall people has been announced and released. I'm terrible but the load times are fantastic so you get in and out of games quickly.
I'm going back to 1 and 2 for the extra stuff. You'll get used to the mansion layout eventually. At least the remake points out locked doors on the map and which rooms have items in them.
This is true. I knew the place like the back of my hand by the end of it. I just finished it tonight, it was a lot of fun. The janky camera angles got a bit annoying in places, but at the same time they do play a big part in building the tension. I spent large parts of the game worrying about the number of ink ribbons and the amount of ammo that I had but ended up with an abundance of both towards the end, which made steam rollering my way through the Lab section pretty easy.
The urge to get the remake of 2 is very strong, but I think I'm going to play Zero first. I'm pretty sure, after looking into it, that 3 is the only one of the main series that I can't play on PS4 at this point. They seemed to have released a remastered or ported over version of pretty much all of them.

I thought the new movement options in REmake were a little iffy in spots. As you switch camera angles, the game continues you in the direction you were going. It's fine in most circumstances but, if you needed to make a quick turn exactly as the camera was changing, you needed to really think about it. It's why I don't get the ire tank controls received. When you're switching view all the time, it allows your movement to be consistent. Zero's probably next for me as well. Might as well round out the old-style ones I've got before moving on to 4 and 5.
Disco

I always assumed the camera and controls (especially) were intentionally bad in RE games because otherwise why would you make it that way?
phonics
05-02-2019, 01:43 PM
Because it was 2 years into the first ever decent 3d games.
Remember what shooters were like before Call of Duty 4 standardised it all? It was a guess job what would be the shoot button.
Disco
05-02-2019, 01:56 PM
I'll give you shitty camera because they were all shitty then but the controls must be wooly and obtuse by design. Like the stupid inventory and not being able to shoot properly, you can tell because the same stuff is in the later games.

I can anally arrange grenades in a briefcase with the best of them but back-tracking through half a dozen load screens because you had no idea you would need the one bent piece of metal in the game that opens the next door? That is, at best, obtuse and annoying.

20 Ascension levels. I'm at 6 with Ironclad, 3 with Silent and 5 with Defect.
Silent is definitely the hardest but the easiest to break the game with, with the correct build. Ironclad pure strength build is laughable, I hit an enemy with 800 damage on one card earlier.

I assume he doesn't come with a snazzy hat otherwise you'd have rated it 11/10.
Resident Evil Zero is great. So far, anyway. I'm probably enjoying it a little more than the first one if I'm honest. I really like the two character dynamic. Although I do spend 90% of my time roaming around solo with Billy because he's an absolute tank compared to Rebecca, who I usually just leave on her own somewhere safe. But it's cool when you have to use both of them to solve a puzzle.
The only really gripe I have is the item management system has become a little more annoying than it already was because, for some reason, they decided to do away with the magic item box that holds all my shit no matter where I access it from. There are no boxes at all on this version! You can drop things though. Which has just resulted in me lobbing everything on the floor in the main hall that has the typewriter in it and constantly returning there when I need to swap things out. Which sort of achieves the same thing, I guess. It's a lot more faffing around remembering which corner of the room I left the shotgun shells (or whatever) in though. :moop:
Shindig
11-02-2019, 09:33 PM
Wow, I forgot the dropping items was a thing. I've got that to look forward to, I guess. The character you don't control just kinda stands there, right? I don't like leaving them in the open like that.
Yeah, tshe just stands there. Looking comically bored usually.
I just leave her in the main hall that I've cleared out, nothing has ever happened to her. You can flip between them with one button push too. It's just a lot easier to go and clear new areas with one person. If you take her with you there's a chance she will get into unnecessary bother. Or, if you set the AI to shoot and defend itself, waste a shit load of ammo.

I would have absolutely destroyed the next city if I'd played 2-3 cards differently across the whole time (maxed out block turn against an elite I didn't notice gained strength on skills and got hit for 25 instead of the 16 I was trying to block)

If you can get to learn the best synergies you'll start wrecking the game. Once you've got a few on lockdown (dead branch + corruption and/or a couple energy relics is fucking lol as an example). My favourite run so far:
https://i.imgur.com/3T4YlK0.jpg
Snecko Eye (makes all cards random costs, so the more 2+ energy cards you have, the better it is) + five upgraded Perfected Strikes (base damage and +3 damage for every card with 'strike' in the name) + a ton of strike cards = Time Eater dead in five turns. Double tap (next attack is played twice) for days too. So strong I didn't need block.

Low card count, the second run. Curses can actually be a help at times, oddly. Certain relics make them worthwhile (+1 strength per curse etc), but yeah usually get rid of those suckers. It's surprisingly gripping, but there's enough people who know actual strategies to ensure I'll never win a game of it.
Still only won one round of Apex, but I did have a round earlier where I got 4 kills which is my best so far.
I just had comfortably my best session of Apex. I think there were only a couple of games where I didn't get a kill and had, in separate rounds:
- My first full squad wipe
- Five kills, then I'd downed two of the squad that finished us but was really low on health and couldn't finish of the third (my two squadmates were already dead)
- A win where I got two kills of the last squad and at one point had to respawn both of my team.
Once you get the hang of the Peacekeeper a bit it's a fucking gamechanger. I might moar freds this if we're liable to get more chat about it.

Metal Gear Rising is one of the free Xbox games this month and is now backwards compatible. Only problem is they want a card attached to your account to get it, even though it's free. A bit annoying as they auto set it to renew your membership when it runs out if you do that.

Division 2 is a good game. Very good if constantly grinding for better loot is your thing.
It's let down by a bit of a nothing story. You having a non-speaking character is always a bad start on that front. The game seems to be geared around getting you to level 30 and then specialising your loadout.
Being able to drop in/out of friends games is great as is co-op play, but you can only really do well if you have everyone around the same level. It will scale your levels up if in a party with a guy way above your level, but your gear remains about the same. So if like me you end up in a lobby as by far the lowest level, you'll do very little damage and get 1 shotted. As an example I use a marksman rifle that's at level 25, like me. In said lobby someone dropped a level 30 one. Mine does 11k damage and theirs did 70k.
The game is generous with XP though so you can get to 30 quite quickly if you keep an eye on projects and take over control points.

I saw some previews of that and quite liked it. Wasn't a massive fan of the first Steamworld Dig, loved the second and I really like that they're not just churning out clones but are trying different things each time.
I had a sudden urge for a tycoon game and I ended up plumping for Mashinky, which is a railroad/business sim. There's a bit of a learning curve how to use signals and figuring out routing but there's something very satisfying in delivering timber to a sawmill and then shipping off to a toolwoks for processing. Only $10 as well so I'm chuffed.

I've been mucking about with that Spider-Man game, recently.
It all seems quite simple and forgiving, so far, but it's the most I've enjoyed a game since my first run through of GTA 5. I've even swung about collecting all 55 backpacks, which is a first, as I never bother with all that stuff, normally.
I am making my third attempt at Bioshock. I'm going to persevere with it this time because previous attempts I've basically enjoyed everything but it simply hasn't hooked me and I end up drifting away from it before long.
I dunno if there is a plot thing coming that explains the protagonist's apparent lack of a self-preservation instinct is frankly incredible.
Survived plane crash so okay, you've nearly died and you're all shit up about it but you then go into a mysterious mid-ocean obelisk where the first thing you see is a giant, creepy statue of a man bearing an ominous slogan. Without question you hop into a mysterious means of transport and off you go.
Then you start following the orders of literally the first person who communicates with you without demanding any information about what the place you've found yourself in is, what's going on, etc. and accept the drip-feed of information Atlas sees fit to give you.
Then, in this underwater ruin full of mad murderous people and wreckage you encounter a giant red syringe lying around and without Atlas even having to go "Right, this is going to help, trust me" you just inject yourself with the thing and crack on.
I know there IS a twist (at least one, anyway) in Bioshock which I have managed to avoid for the past 12 years which may explain all of the above but bloody hell.

I think I'm about done with the Division for a little bit. I'll spoiler story/end game stuff in case anyone is bothered.
After you storm the stronghold and finish the games story off, you'll get what is almost a victory speech from your commander, however it's cut short but a cut scene showing an invasion from a force called the Black Tusk. They've essentially pulled a Cersei Lannister and waited for you to wipe out Hyenas and True Sons then made their move. They bring with them tech gear and more elites to deal with.
The map will reset into what is known as World Tier 1 and everything will become dynamic. Control points will no longer stay yours once taken. The 3 other forces will also battle them between themselves, so it wont be uncommon to find 2 of them squabbling in the streets before you even get there. Certain parts of the map will be covered in a red layer, to show they've been invaded by the Black Tusk, who are now using Strongholds as bases. Your job now is to complete story missions again, but with a twist on some of them. Enemies are now stronger and tougher.
Once you do story missions you unlock the Strongholds again. Once you finish those you'll advance into World Tier 2 and the process repeats up to World Tier 5. Everything getting harder each time.
If you've been ticking off side missions at a decent rate you should be in or around level 30 before you hit World Tier 1. Once you advance, levelling turns into improving your gear to earn a higher gear score. It's capped at 300 at WT1 and increases by 50 each tier you go up.
What this does mean is that thee's little to no point in matching your gear up or fine tuning your loadout until you hit WT5.
Once you clear WT5 the map is essentially clear of all missions, but every Thursday at 10am the Black Tusk invade certain missions and a stronghold again. Once you've hit gear score 500, this is your chance to start putting a build together. However getting to the point of needing 1 or 2 specific items slows you right down.
If you get one good stat on an otherwise bad piece of armour, you can shuffle it across to another piece of the same type on your re-calibration bench, Which does help with the builds. It can also sort of overclock your gear above 500 too. This is pretty much where I'm at now.
There's soon to be an update bringing in 8 player PvE raids which promise the best gear. However there's a patch coming with it that will nerf certain stats and talents. The other major change is that the current best loot you can get will no longer be available in standard gameplay. You have to go into the Dark Zone for that.
The Dark Zone does seem good fun, but loot doesn't drop as normal. Some does, but other stuff in there drops as "contaminated."
To get that to be permanently yours you have to extract it. You also can't see the stats until then. This is where Dark Zone becomes frustrating. If you have contaminated loot it shows as a big yellow bag on your backpack. You have to attach it to a helicopter drop line, it'll sit there for 15 secs or so, then be off back to mother base. At any point between, other players in there can turn rogue and kill you to take it. Even when it's attached to the line, they can cut it down and put it back on themselves.
I've probably extracted about 10 times now and every time bar one, I've been alone in the area, but the extra one time me and another player were in a stand off. Just before the chopper got there he turned rogue and tried to off me. I managed to kill him, but a team of 4 then rocked up and obliterated me. Going solo in there is risky business.
I've enjoyed the grind to here but this raid doesn't have a defined release date. Anywhere from tomorrow to 4 weeks away I've heard mentioned.

Finished God Hand with cheats. From Chapter 7 onwards, it turns into a boss rush with some mobs that take forever to whittle down. I like it, to a point. I've become more accustomed to the idea that the game is very much it's own thing. Nobody is making a new God Hand or crowdfunding a spiritual successor because the original is such a weird product of it's time. At least PCSX2 can read the disc. Opens up some possibilities with my PS2 backlog.
Mike's alerted me to the existence of Starters Orders 7 (https://store.steampowered.com/app/978960/Starters_Orders_7_Horse_Racing/) so I'm hoping it becomes my life for the foreseeable future. It's basically FM but with horse racing, aka the perfect game for me.
One of the modes on this game is real time. Like if you loaded it up today it’d be 6th May and you can’t progress until tomorrow when it’s the 7th.
That’s something Yevrah would play.
I hated Dirt Rally 2 the first time I tried it. The graphics were blurry, the cars drove like crap, the online all the time shit, etc. I got back to it lately, however, and they seem to have fixed it. I am still not sure if it is an improvement over the first one, but they are both extremely good.

Eyeing up Rage 2. Any idea if it's going to be any good?
Avalanche's involvement would at one point have been a fairly safe bet for some chaotic fun but Just Cause 4 was a broken mess and Generation Zero just sounds like it was disappointingly shallow (and also slightly wonky in terms of UI and stuff) so who knows.

Yeah, Generation Zero was barebones. Shooting felt and sounded good but there was so little going on. One of those passion projects where the passion goes into the environment rather than giving you something to do.

Recorded some Breath of the Wild Kakariko in 4K 60fps. Still the absolute GOAT.

Finishing my MSc project this weekend and handing it in on Monday. Thinking I might treat myself to that PS4 I've been wanting for ages now that I'll finally have free time to play it.
Recommend me some games, pals.
Just wait for a bit and get a PS5.

Nah, there'll be fuck all on it when it comes out like there always is.
God of War.
Yeah, definitely want to play that.
Also really want to play Horizon: Zero Dawn and Red Dead 2.

Did they ever remaster the Killzone series or Resistance: Fall of Man?
Nah, there'll be fuck all on it when it comes out like there always is.
It is backwards compatible with PS4 games.

I just checked and it's not coming out for another year and a half.
It'll probably cost about £500 as well. I could just pay half that now and be able to play PS4 games straight away.

Horizon: Zero Dawn
Love that game. Do get Frozen Wilds, quite loved that expansion as well.
I am now past the freezer bit in Bioshock, which is the first time I've pushed on this far. Didn't realise until I got to it there just how little I'd got through of it at previous attempts but I think treating it as a combat game (rather than as a Deus Ex-alike, say, with me projecting options onto it that I didn't really have) has helped on that front.
I'm keen to find out just why the fuck the protagonist is here and getting balls-deep into this Rapture business. I'd also forgotten just how fucking tanky Big Daddies are. My preferred tactic is to lure them into a small mountain of proximity mines then fire wildly at them anti-personnel rounds and electricity.
I've got a handful of plasmids just now but am still trying to work out, after electricity and fire, which ones are actually my favourites.

A Plague Tale: Innocence is a fantastic walking sim, some slight stealth and set pieces. Stunning game to look at too:

Killer7 has so much style going on. Shame I can't aim for shit.
Yeah I'll be picking that up at some point, DS. Looks good.
Has anyone tried the Oculus Rift or similar? I just ordered a new PC just with the goal of getting into VR in the near future. Mostly interested in iRacing (and Dirt Rally 2 if it ever becomes possible) but there might be some other stuff worth trying. Or maybe I should just stay away.

Just get TrackIR. Racing movement in VR feels like dog shit due to lack of physical feedback outside the wheel.
I'm tempted by Mordhau, just not sure i'll be any good at it or that it's got a long term appeal. Looks cool though!

VR in general is still just a bit too clunky, it takes you too far out of the room.

Had a TrackIR thing before and didn't find it all that useful.
One of those lol triple monitor setups is probably the best way to go, but I can't deal with the price and the space they take.
Bought a used Oculus Rift to test it out. If I don't like it I will just put it back on ebay.

Is it one of those games where you don't do anything and are just there for the story?

From what I understand you're basically HAL getting people across a ship.
Might have to give it a go, I love space shit.
EDIT: Annoying that it is not on Steam though.

I finished it last night, one sitting, 6 hours. Its heavily story based but has more interaction than most of these types of games.
Bar a couple of niggles, I loved it.

Anybody want Civilization: Beyond Earth, White Noise 2, or Stardrive 2 for Steam?
Edit: ignore that, I'm a moron.
New Total War looks tempting.

They've been rather clever with it, appeasing both the grognard crew who want to play a historical title and also the newer post-Warhammer players who want the faster more character based approach.
