It might be general to the area actually. My Vietnamese housemate at university was like a mouse, but if they had a couple of people round it was like the Fall of Saigon.

I love the exceptions to this rule. Guy in my freshman dorm at university was straight from China, one of the best math students in the entire country. He was a very peculiar fellow but extremely boisterous and had a loud presence wherever he went. He would also get blackout drunk weekly, his English would deteriorate, and he’d stumble around walking into random rooms and start conversations with everyone. Wonder what he’s up to now

Richmond Park is about 5 minutes from a brewery/pub I was doing a tour of (Rascals), nearest watering hole to the ground. Even 50 away fans will have the place wrecked before they can finish off an oi oi oi. Got my money back this evening but the mate can't go for another month as he works weekends.

I quite like York. The city walls being well preserved really give the place a proper look. York Minster is an impressive building. Didn't get up to much else but the Railway Museum was alright. I don't think I'm as keen on trains as I used to be but the scale and the look of old trains still gets to me. There was a proper novelty to train travel the older carriages manage to convey.

Also, York has an HMV. I thought they went bust? Ł20 spent on Run Come Save Me, Straight Outta Compton and Twilight Sad's new one.

If you could hit a ball over the crossbar with nobody to stop it or have to get it past a goalkeeper into a smaller area then it's fairly obvious the latter is 3 and the former 1.

It's on telly anyway cos I'm drank and smoked out, and I'm already going to the other semi final tomorrow.

You'll need drugs, it's the only reason techno exists.

mugbull

Drugs help, for sure. Especially if it’s one of those club nights that drags on into the morning. I love me some sober techno sets too but I’m deep in the rabbit hole for that kind of music so for a newcomer, you might be a bit bored. Just try to listen to it rhythmically, as opposed to musically, if that makes any sense

Going Manchester for a techno night. I don't really know much about techno aside from the eminem line. Is it any good? Am I going to have a shit time?

It's basically a non-commercial version of the 'dance music' you hear on the radio, minus the vocals (mostly) and without the 'drop'.

Put even more basically - doof doof doof doof doof doof doof doof doof doof doof doof.

I refute what Giggles said as I've never taken any sort of gear and had many a quality night in my young, free and slim days, but yes, if you're not a fan, you may need some chemical assistance.

WARNING: When I went to the Warehouse Project in Manchester they had sniffer dogs. Bury it deep in your rectum.

Thanks gents. Drugs are almost certainly going to be involved but my mate who's invited me is quite set on getting coke which, from experience, doesnt do much to make me enjoy the music more, just makes me wanna chain smoke fags and talk bollocks. Well, more so than when I'm sober.

It's not a proper WHP type event, think it's just in some sketchy pub. Any advice relating to putting things in my bum is welcomed tho.

Techno is pretty big at the moment (talking UK here, it's huge worldwide). The tech house wankers are migrating currently, so you've got the 'big room' techno now which is usually full of roidheads paying a fiver a go for a balloon and talking through sets.

I went to Corsica Studios last night and it was very good. It reminded me a bit of Berlin in that a lot of the crowd were just totally letting go, as it should be.

You've got to give the music your full attention and let it whip you onto a frenzy. Drugs or no drugs, techno gets your mind racing like no other genre but it does require some patience. I do have doubts about the sound system and crowd if it's in a pub, though. Got a link to the event?

Spikey M
27-07-2019, 06:33 PM
Being in a shitty pub will mean it's either:

A) a chancer has hired it out and will probably DJ it theirself.

B) the landlord has a copy of 'the best of Ibiza 2009' in the CD player.

-james-
27-07-2019, 08:52 PM
It's quite common. Some will just use hardware to recreate/alter their own tracks on the fly but the best sets tend to be entirely improvised.

KiNK is probably the most well known but he's not really techno. Karenn, Giant Swan, Ancient Methods/Orphx, Surgeon, Tobias, Neil Landstrumm, Voices from the Lake are all absolutely worth seeing if you get the chance.

No particularly zany anecdotes I'm afraid but I had lots of fun. I did have one and a half pills, but I thought the music was great. I'd venture to say techno>house for eccied up dancing , at least from my limited experiences.

Tbh the main thing I'm pleased about this weekend is my social anxiety around big groups of mates has abated massively. It was basically me, my mate and his big group of uni mates and they've all known each other for years with associated injokes etc. Usually I find it very uncomfortable to be inserted into them social situations but I actually made conversation and was generally a CHILL GUY whereas even two years ago I'd have just been mega nervous and awkward and spent most of the night hiding by my mate. This was while I was sober to clarify.

Just seen my mates flatmate looking terrified in the kitchen- she got to sleep at 7am after similar debauchery and is now about to go on a tinder date to a thai restaurant. Rather her than me.

That's why the throat of it needs to be cut now. Properly festroy anyone using it and it will soon become a thing of the past before nurses, police, etc using it while they're working is even more commonplace. Proper checks and then two strikes should leave you with no job, no benefits, no nothing. Don't even bother locking people up to cost proper people money, just let them die in a hole.

Baz you’ve always been very stridently “weed/coke/drugs are bad” despite being otherwise a happy go lucky kind of guy, what’s the reason?I guess the biggest contributing factor is growing up with the mindset that people who use drugs are either deadbeat losers, or macho pricks who wanna fight you if you stand too close, and I obviously don’t fall into either of those categories, and have zero desire to associate with anyone who does. Plus the fact they’re illegal makes me not want to ever try them. I guess the fact that that would also mean to get them you’d have to speak to one of the aforementioned people I’d rather avoid, although honestly that’s like 1% of the reason. I don’t need drugs to have a good time - either because I’m fine without anything, or because I can easily get out of my mind from drinking, although that’s never my intention when I have a drink.

Like I said, none of my friends do it so why would I? A few years ago a group of us went out drinking and someone brought along another friend he had. Said newbie went and did coke in the pub toilets so my mate who’d brought him had a word and the coke guy ended up going around everyone one-at-time apologising for his actions.

And a few years prior to that I had a really good mate from school (who once spoke to Wedge on the phone for ages) but all he was interested in was smoking weed, so I completely binned him off cos I got sick of stoner parties where everyone bar me and one other guy (who I’m still great friends with, and he clearly did the same as me in terms of ditching our old mate) where the only ones not sitting around smoking.

You are right though, I am quite strident when it comes to it, and it is out of character, but I do feel quite strongly about never touching them. The only other thing I have strong anti- opinions on is smoking in general, so that also probably contributes to the anti-weed stance.

https://i.ytimg.com/vi/anceYjUmQJA/hqdefault.jpg

My wife calls me a hypocrite for being so pro-alcohol and, weirdly, pro-sunbathing, yet being so anti-smoking and anti-drugs, but it’s just how I feel. I actively enjoy the first two, whereas I have zero desire to ever try the latter two. :sorry:

Each to their own though. I’d go drinking with smackhead (if they were sound), so long as s/he didn’t feel the need to do drugs in my company.

To me, having been in California for the past 8 years, (most) drugs are completely disassociated from the concept of deadbeat loser and there’s nearly no taboo surrounding them at all. They’re just fun. It always depends on who you surround yourself with; most people I know would be more offended to see their friend smoking cigarettes than smoking weed or taking mushrooms, which makes sense in a way, but I can imagine is weird to the outsider

In a society where only the shitheads use substances (lets say Pakistan), I probably would never either

Okay so theres a few good things at the more primetime kinda slots, obviously , but Seymour mace is brilliant and is playing 1.30pm. Definitely worth going to see, he was great this year and last year. Michael legge is good as well and is midday so if you're around that early definitely see him.

Tom Ballards 9pm was really good, but if you're only down for a day I'd still go to matt ewins instead at the same time.

Kieran hodgson is rotating his shows of the last 3 or 4 years on alternate days at 630; lance and the 1978(?) one are brilliant but I'd reckon just going to whichever one is playing on your day would be worthwhile.

There's a lot of #BUZZ around zoe combs marr, who I'm seeing tomorrow, meant to be v good. 730 which didn't clash with anything else particularly good.

I tried Filipino food for the first time (Lumpia is insanely good), tested some hot sauces and bought some curry kits.

The hot sauces supply Hot Ones on YouTube and I tried 3. A Caribbean sweet and spicy sauce (which I bought), a Naga sauce and a Trinidad Scorpion one. The Naga lasted a lot longer than the Trinidad but the initial kick from the Scorpion was hefty and instantly attacked the throat despite only a small amount.

Also tried some chilli chocolate fudge which was delicious.

Would have stayed longer but it was just way too hot. Definetly going to go again.

I get into Central London a bit with work and you wonder what the appeal is. I used to think it would be great to live there with money, but that's probably a bit out of date now. I lived in a little Suffolk town of 60,000 people for 30 years before moving to New York.

It's definitely one of those places (and London is probably the same) where people would say 'I couldn't possibly live there' but then thoroughly enjoy it. There's literally something for everyone. And agreed that the multiculturalism is fantastic.

I don't think I would want to bring children up here though but that's mainly just wanting a garden and more space. Unless you're seriously wealthy, NY prices preclude that.

Don't know about the 10 year stuff but I agree. It's been great the past week with the bank holiday/summer holiday combination as the sheer volume of people around has reduced.

I've been in Highbury/Angel since I've moved here and it is great though - loads of restaurants, bars, pubs, parks etc. I can imagine if you were in Soho, Camden, Oxford Street, Brixton, it can be overwhelming. But most areas aren't there.

Preference is about, I don't know, the method of transportation you use to get to work or the amount of greenery in a 100 yard radius of your front door.

You can prefer not to mix with ethnic minorities, but society would be a lot better if people like you had been in diverse classrooms from a young age. You can also prefer not to pay taxes, but you should.

Bingo.

Traffic lights every ten yards, half of which serve no purpose whatsoever but to slow everyone down. Nobody can drive in a single lane (perhaps because they've learnt that one of them will soon be blocked by road works, a taxi or maybe just a load of pedestrians deathwishing into the road). I don't know if this is normal but we were plagued by Prius drivers who seem to have started driving that very day and presumably had to consult a manual on how to pull away each and every time. We got to the venue only to be told completely unironically that the car park was closed 'because there's an event on'. Barriers had been erected around the entrance to Stratford station meaning everyone walking past it had to go in one door and out of another one literally right next to it whether they wanted to go into the station or not (there was no discernable purpose to this particular piece of insanity). There was also a West Ham match kicking out and the 40000 or so fans were being directed by people with megaphones giving out useful information such as 'For Westfield shopping centre go that way'.

Just the last place you would want to go unless you absolutely had to.

London is a great place. You just can't come at if from outside. Without wanting to be too wanky about it, you sort of have to live there. I got seconded to Bristol for a bit and found going back at weekends did my head in. You have to have the mindset for it not to be a nightmare. Also you have to stay out of the West End, obviously. I tend to only go back now with kids, and into the West End, so its appeal has faded somewhat. Definitely wouldn't want to have a family there, without even thinking about how that might work financially.

I'll roll through. Im not staying for long though. Internet dating is scary. Make sure someone is holding a sign with my name on it as I arrive.Igor’s Snapchat story last night was him sat in a pub while two of his friends, one wearing a flat cap, played chess.

Hope you’ve not already booked your train!

I'm just disappointed there was only one flat cap. I thought they all slept in them at this stage.

There's not enough punches in the world for the bloke in the brown jumper, and that bird needs a word with her hairdresser.

Who's the homeless fella in the 2nd photo?

I was there for 65 minutes. Had a decent conversation with a mad scientist about stem cell treatment. I usually get very nervous around large groups of white people and alcohol but it turned out Ok overall.
