Very good first half from Everton. Exactly what was required and surely should have been expected?

Richarlison is however making his usual show of himself. I think Liverpool got spoiled in midweek with how easy it was.

Everton currently want it more. Liverpool really look like they've turned up expecting to knock it about like they did against United and it isnt working.

Brighton desperately need some better forwards [shock horror]. Whilst it's fun watching Danny Welbeck gambling around the pitch in his dotage years, he's really not that great, and Maupay just isn't up to it. They could do a lot worse than getting Big Divock in on a free, save him from a fate worse than death at acey meelan or wherever it is he is supposed to be going.

They also need to sign Alex Scott [the Bristol City one] to build on the Maya Le Tissier Guernsey links.

Nothing wrong with Welbeck (…apart from that he can’t play half the games). Could do with an upgrade on Maupay - or Maupay upgrading himself - but it’s more goals from midfield we massively lack. More may come from Mwepu and Mac Allister next season.

Nothing massively right about him either. He's fine, but he could do with being improved upon.

Maupay looked like he was running in treacle at points today. He's just not up to it. Another one in the hinterland between probably too good for the Championship and not good enough for the Premier League.

Agree on the midfield. Bissouma was obviously a miss today [although not many goals there]. Caceido and Mwepu both good until the final third, whereupon they generally about face. Potter is definitely an excellent coach up until that final third. Playing out from the back and knocking it around in tight spaces is second nature, but when it gets into the attacking third you can see the NFL quarterback style progressions going through the ball carrier's head every time and everything just slows down. Maybe it's a consequence of having somewhat limited players who don't trust themselves [or can't be permitted] to play instinctively. Not sure Mac Allsiter is ever going to amount to a whole hill of beans, game passed him by today.

The defence and shitkicking midfield departments are completely fine [Cucurella is top quality], just add a top quality attacker to play alongside Trossard up front [depending on how you set up] and so many of these draws could be wins.

Weren't Everton one of these newly minted clubs a couple of years ago (around the time Ancelotti went there). What happened them?

niko_cee
24-04-2022, 10:15 PM
They spent all their money on Alex Iwobi and a litany of other shite, then appointed Frank Lampard when things were looking bleak.

They still have their wealthy owner, and plans to move into a massive new stadium at some point.

Nice contrast to the season when you turn the clock back to 3 or 4 games in or whatever it was, Arsenal rock bottom and Everton flying high. Think their win at Brighton was the last time they won an away game [in August].

Don

Everton's squad is a real hodge podge. Richarlison aside, they're rancid up front but they have a couple of good youngsters. Dele Alli's continuing to feel anonymous and I forgot they had van de Beek. Too many players have gone missing for largely the whole season and the fresh blood has done nothing to boost confidence.

Rafa was shit as well. "Hey, Solomon Rondon. He scored in unremarkable numbers in China, he'll do."

What happened to Livramento yesterday? I assumed it was going to be some sort of freak Cissé style horror leg break given the way the ref reacted but they showed it on MotD and it must have been more of an internal thing, which is probably worse in the long run/recovery terms if it's his knee.

Everton want answers over non-award of penalty!

:D

Is that a thing now?

He didn't get the penalty because he [Gordon] is a diving little shit, had been diving all game, and when a tight call came along [STONEWALL :roflol:] the ref erred on the side of him being a diving little shit. If it gets given VAR doesn't overturn it, but if it doesn't get given tough shit [unless you're Arsenal maybe]. This isn't last season where every microscopic bit of contact is deemed sufficient to generate a foul.

Emerson Royal went through Jota in a much more industrial style earlier in the season and it was him 'playing for it' and so VAR had no interest. C'est la vie.

I don't get teams who lost by 2 or more goals crying over a single incident. If it's a last minute thing that would have changed the result, fine, let it all out, but if you're that good you'd have scored again and/or stopped the other team from scoring two.

Everton Football Club need about 25 years out of the top flight to calm the fuck down.

Gray Fox
25-04-2022, 06:59 PM
Another big irritance of mine on VAR is that the actual referee in the booth is a fully qualified Premier League official. Yet they will never make on field calls themselves. Even if something is blatant they wont overturn it, they'll just send the other guy to the monitor.

Ben
25-04-2022, 07:07 PM
“Stockley Park” is the issue. Employing another ref to oversee a ref is ridiculous. Just send the on field man straight to the monitor like most other countries where it works alright.

Every rule now seems infinitely more confused and applied differently on a game by game basis. I thought the whole point was to get the big decisions right yet we're talking even more about referees and whether the decision is right.

Yevrah
25-04-2022, 07:58 PM
I think a big problem is that they should have had a look at every single rule before they brought it in and ascertained whether they needed to change any of those in light of it.

Offside, for example, was a rule brought in to stop goal hanging and shouldn't in a million years lead to a goal being disallowed if a slowed down replay viewed eight times suggests the striker's left testicle was ahead of the defender.

Other than for the first three months under Ole Gunnar Binman, his best season was his first one where 'Zlatan' was wasting one or two highlight reel assists every game. I'm not sure where he goes from United. In the game as it is now he's a number ten or he's a borderline liability.

Pogba's not quite in the Balotelli 'you can see he has talent' camp, but at some point you do have to wonder whether, as a player, in a team game, when your contribution to your team's performances [or lack thereof] is taken as at least persuasive evidence of whether you are in fact actually really good at the professional version of the game.

There are loads of players who can do a million keepie-uppies and all sorts of wonderful tricks, and yet there's Sylvan Wiltord with the decorated career at the very top of the game.

Pogba's ended up a poor man's Gerrard. A player without discipline, but who could make up for it through sheer effort and ability, but Pogba's all too often lacked the former, it would seem.

Bayern would have been an interesting prospect, with all their pace. Doubt they would have the gumption to sit off and just knock long balls over the top, but who knows.

I have no idea what Villarreal are all about. I'm guessing extreme organisation with some nice technical players through the middle, and pace from that Chukwueze chap who has been getting linked all over Europe for years.

If I were a neutral I'd expect Liverpool to crush them.

Hailed as the best goal since sliced Maradona by Darren Fletcher too. (Was good by Vinicius, just bad by Man City - especially Fernandinho.)

Fantastic game. These slightly mental Champions League ties are much more fun than the 1-0s of 10-15 years ago, while also higher quality.

Very much a late 00's Champions League tie this. There wont be many big chances or goals.

Liverpool being a little too safe and slow with the ball. Trent has also developed an annoying recent habit of not hugging the touch line. He's often almost a RCM, which cuts out some width and takes some of his crossing away.

Barely to be honest, seeing as they can get a maximum of 81 points this season which is on the (very) low end of title-winning tallies. You've also got to factor in teams coming up against others who now have nothing to play for. I feel like it's between Everton and Leeds looking at the games left. The latter having a tendency to lose and lose by 3+ every time may well fuck them over with that goal difference.

They have 6 points away from home. Some myth.

Offft. There can’t be many teams that give away goals like that every other week.

Yeah, their last win was, surprise surprise, at the Amex.

He can’t hack the famous Scottish Premiership.

Celtic’s style suits the league whereas Rangers are a bit more compact and have been held to draws a fair amount. Europa League probably stopped them winning the league as they’ve dropped points a fair bit after a Thursday

I don't know the exact mechanics of this, or if it indeed will be the case, but is Rangers' good run in Europe going to benefit Celtic by way of coefficient for the Champions League next season? Would be quite lol and a bit of a travesty if so.

Burnley play Aston Villa twice

How/why?

They're a bad team, bad teams lose away from home. Maybe there's something causal in the pattern but it's probably just noise. Home/away form is mostly just taking a small sample and chopping it in half.

How does that work?

Must be covid related, I was looking at their fixtures earlier and noticed they play them next, then in their penultimate game as well.
