The signing of Pogba was probably one of the most damaging things they've done. It's hindsight and all, but Fergie had his number, and bringing him in for newly minted Mourinho [also clearly a terrible plan] was just insane.

randomlegend
09-04-2022, 06:43 PM
Fergie absolutely wanted to keep Pogba. He just wasn't prepared to give him the money and assurances he was asking for (which he felt were being driven by Raiola who he hates).

They should actually flush a dozen players out this summer. If they have to finish ninth next year with an eighteen year old bench then so be it. If they want a 'cultural reset' as Neville calls it, and break the back of all the wank and cliquey bullshit, then it needs to be done ruthlessly.

niko_cee

Not giving in to his dickhead agent [who is an extension of his own dickhead personality] is why he was right about him. He's not a player you can trust.

randomlegend

They need to completely change their mentality as an organisation, and that won't happen under current ownership.

This has hopefully already changed. Woodward has gone and the guy who's replaced him seems set on sticking to the commercial side, whilst the new DoF (John Murtough) along with a few other PROPER FOOTBALL PEOPLE are taking over the football side of things.

The new manager appointment and this summer window will be the first real test of whether things have really changed.

We absolutely do need a massive clear out.

Maguire is going to be a huge problem; he's not the terrible player he's made out to be but he can't play in a team that wants to play a high line and press which is basically mandatory to be a top team nowadays it seems. He's good for England and was good for Leicester because he doesn't/didn't have to deal with that. But nobody will take him off our hands for anything close to what we paid for him and I doubt the Glazers will sign off on making a huge loss to get rid.

Surprised he's gone for Jota rather than reverting to his standard XI for big games.

City have done relatively well sussing Liverpool out in more recent games. They seem to draw our team all the way over to our left and then hit quick passes to get at Trent on the other side.
I think it all depends on how City approach the game. If they go in looking to just not lose, they could become unstuck. But they've got a good recent record against us and must know a win for them puts the title to bed.

Don
10-04-2022, 03:07 PM
They got no pace which is our weakspot so all good, barring any red cards we got this.

Gray Fox

Massive results for Brentford and Burnley too. The former now safe and it really doesn't look good for the latter now. Their run in is easier than Evertons but you're suddenly needing 2-3 wins to stay up from there.

Very much brings back memories of the first half of the reverse game. Liverpool didnt turn up there but then come out firing in the 2nd half.

On this viewing I'd replace the entire front 3 at half time. Mane and Salah havent done a thing today and Jota fluffed his chance straight at Ederson. Should be about 4-1 to City here.

Luke Emia
10-04-2022, 04:22 PM

Graham Potter's got this.

Both sides just need to worry about winning their own games. It could easily go the same way it did a few years ago [with both winning all of their games], Liverpool's fixtures look harder, but at this stage of the season appearances can be deceptive.

Great bit of possession at the back there by Chelsea as time expired.

I thought their line-ups in both of the knock-out rounds, particularly at home, had a bit of a champ manager feel to them. Just spamming attackers, no balance.

They've also bought quite heavily into [the false economy of] speedsters, probably as a result of their domestic situation.

Or maybe Villarreal are just really good.

Gray Fox
13-04-2022, 01:16 PM
Bayerns setup was all wrong last night.

Wingers/Forwards wide on their wrong foot only works against the low block if the full backs can get up to offer width and that wasn't happening. They had a bit of luck in getting their goal but then not long after that reverted back to what wasn't working before.

Nagelsmann is in for the big challenge next year though. If Lewandowski is off, their usual avenue of just getting Dortmunds best player in needs to happen. Unfortunately for them(and the Premier League) he looks like he's off to City. There's also suggestion Muller might go too.

Villarreal are very well set up and excellent at game management. You just have to try and be the one that scores first.

Suspect Liverpool will start to run out a bit of puff soon after a long stretch of 3 games a week. You can already see it a bit with Salah fading. Even so I'm surprised to see this level of rotation.

I feel it's a bit of a sulk over the contract situation rather than outright fatigue.

Makes sense to.

Liverpool are going to have the easiest CL win of all time when Atletico beat City tonight and Real in a few weeks. Would be:

Inter - 2nd in Serie A
Benfica - 3rd in Portugal
Villarreal - 7th in La Liga
Atletico - 4th in La Liga

Offft

Liverpool are more likely to go out tonight than 'Atleti' getting to the final.

Surprised by that given how uefa normally operate. I would have thought big league trumped all.

It's a more recent thing, like in the last 5-6 years or so. I think it was mostly done for the Europa League slot, so that teams have an incentive and they just went the whole way with the concept.

EDIT: Nevermind, it seems it was the other way around, as it started from the league winners and then it was expanded to also include the Europa League winner.

Smjffy
15-04-2022, 12:05 AM
Unsure if popular or unpopular opinion (suppose depends on who you support?) but I find it a little difficult not to be happy for David Moyes. He looked like a goner once upon a time, a relic, a bust, damaged goods whatever but the job he has done with West Ham.....I can't think of too many managers in the Premier League who have transformed an entire club on the way he has. West Ham missed a trick by not adding to squad in the last transfer window but gaining Champions League football vis Europa League doesn't look quite so far fetched given the clubs that remain.

Moyes aside, it's quite feasible that all three European trophies could end up England this season. I'd rather the European Cup ended up in Spain if not Liverpool, mind. Hell, I'd rather an all Spanish final as opposed to Man City claiming it for the first time.

The press come out of it looking scummier than ever, although it is a bit soft on him as a result, since it tries to make out he was a decent-if-simple lad ruined by press attention rather than somebody more than capable of being a cunt.
