It's not like the current quali format is stale either. It regularly throws curveballs from either conditions, daft team decisions or just plain bad luck. I've got no doubt Saturday attendances and viewing figures dip but you can't spice that up.

The sport as a spectacle is what it has always been, inappropriate cars racing wherever someone will put down enough cash. Hamilton is still not even halfway to the 15 he was penciled in for in the immediate aftermath of his first [might have been 10 actually].
That was a spectacularly boring race.
More people should have gambled on the full safety car [they were never going to clear that under a VSC] but even then Ocon didn't seem to be up to much on new softs in those last laps.
Stupidly high tyre degradation [a la Canada in the not too distant past] is what is needed.

Wasn't he having some engine issues or something?
He had engine issues for a couple of laps before the safety car and they told him to change whatever setting it was and it seemed to have been fixed. I think what happened is he decided to play safe after that close shave with Sainz. He was really pressuring him up to that point, so either he sustained some tyre damage there or saw himself ending up the same way as Leclerc in the previous race and stopped pushing.

John Arne

I love the whole build up, the FP, then quali.... It's usually lap 3 of the race that I think "fuck me, it's Monaco isn't it..." and proceed to open Youtube.
I've grown to loathe Monaco a bit, but when I think about it the reason is definitely the cars themselves. They're just so fucking huge now that they might as well race HGVs round there. I used to love it back in the V10 (even V8) days because even without OVERTAKING™, they just looked so awesome hoying the agile cars between the barriers.
Monaco was/is alright because Monaco, mate, so we endured one boring street circuit because history. Modern street circuits have no history (or look good) so they are just shit.

Aye and I think it brought the red flag out which cancelled out the winning overtake. That's all I remember from last year. Certainly nothing like the Rascasse smashes we seem to be getting at every race. Almost as if sheets of kitchen roll aren't enough to soak up oil.
Aston Martin are bringing a whole new B-spec car to Spain. Potentially interesting but will probably result in half a tenth.
Everyone seems to be seething that Aston Martin’s B car looks exactly like the Red Bull. I don’t see the issue, they’re just ahead of the curve. Give it two or three years when a particular concept establishes itself as superior in these regulations and we will have 20 identical cars. Helmut Marko talking shit as usual saying they’ve stolen IP; anyone can study some pictures mate.
Lol though. Aston poached loads of RB designers a few months ago.

The problem with that is that these designs would have been well in progress before anyone had seen the real Red Bull, which means it's either just convergent design (normal for any sport with a formula) or transfer of staff/knowledge. Given recent Red Bull history it's rather rich of them to criticize the latter, doubly so when you consider that most of their success came from Adrian Newey remembering the rest of his career after he joined them.

Russel was superb. Hamilton needs to sort himself out. Ricciardo is awful. Everytime they show him on track. People just drive past him.

Hamilton was excellent too – he had just about the best and most consistent pace of anyone in the field today. Six of one, half dozen of the other with Magnussen. Looked like Hamilton understeered and Magnussen was tight with his line/space.

The Hamilton/Magnussen thing was the most racing incident of all racing incidents. Both to blame, neither to blame, it's motor racing, shit happens.
The drone needs to go in the ‘tried but failed’ bin.
Agreed.

The lol part was Magnussen saying Hamilton did it on purpose. Yes mate, the seven time world champion purposely ruined his race just so he could stick it to a perennial midpacker.

Different day for Monaco practice (all those years and it turns out you can just do it on Friday anyway) but very much business as usual; Merc look a bit garbo, Di Resta having little digs at Lewis Hamilton, and Ricciardo in the barrier. If Christian Horner whinges about the cost cap that might be a full house.
Di Resta is shit. He loves digging out Vettel as well.

The reason they gave was that the Friday was Ascension Day or something but really they liked having a party on Thursday and not getting up too early the next day. The yanks couldn't care less about the hallowed streets though so they have to do as they're told.

Has Hamilton qualified ahead of Russell at all yet this year?
Gray Fox
28-05-2022, 07:19 PM
Mercedes said last week Hamilton had been choosing to make his qualifying pace suffer for a better race car, which sounds a cool out, but he has been good in races, with 3 lots of bad safety car luck so far.
Today he was on his hot lap and Perez binned it.
Russell is showing how good he is though.

Russell is really good, as he showed last week and has been showing for some time in a non-competitive car, and Hamilton is clearly not all there upstairs this year.
I'm sure this has been mentioned on coverage (I haven't seen any of it), but 91 years since a Monaco driver won the Monaco Grand Prix.

Shindig
29-05-2022, 01:03 PM
Because rain hit when they were on the grid. Gives them time to switch to inters or wets.
This is a shambles. They all have to put wets on and it’s not wet enough. :D

They've had to switch to full wets because of starting under the safety car. Some started on inters. Hence the late chaos.
Why are they starting under the safety car?

At this stage they should just pick names out of a hat, call or a result, and rock on to the next week. Wasn’t it only a few years ago they talked about sprinklers? :D
If you can’t race around it in the wet, it’s not a race track that should be in the calendar.

I'm not sure what they're waiting for now, they all trundle around seconds off the normal pace anyway so it can't be a safety concern.

Once Latifi/Strulovic put it in a wall, we’ll be back in the pit lane anyway.
