I've decide Icon trading probably isn't worth it (at least at the level I'm starting at). Bought a Zanetti for 307k and listed for 330k, just to try it out. I suspect he'll sell towards the end of the week as people pick up players for the WL, but I'll probably only make 6.5k which, considering it's tied up the majority of my coins isn't exactly worth it. It's probably more viable at the next tier up around 500k or so where you can make 20k ish per trade.

Just lost 7-4 in Rivals.

All the goals were scored in the first half in which we both looked like scoring every single time we attacked. In the second half it was the complete opposite, our defenders turned from turnstiles to brick walls.

It was very strange.

I've been tackled so many times when I had plenty of time to get a shot off because he seems to be on a delay.

Also, the game is really annoying me with the pass targets and player selection with L1. Those are easily my biggest annoyances around the game right now.

I'm in D3, 1700 ranking pts with this. Got me Gold 3 with plenty to spare this weekend. Switches to 4-2-3-1 in ultra defensive, 4-3-3 in defensive, 4-3-3 (4) in attacking and 4-1-2-1-2 wide in all out attack. I normally start with all out attack and cycle backwards depending on need. Jesus and Fati up front, Talisca to CAM, Llorente to CDM and Texeira at LM. When playing the 3 man midfields, Torres moves to CM.

Pleasetly surprised with Lodi and Texeira. Talisca is his usual early game beast, Fati is worth it. Posting this has made me realise I fucked up and put Marquinhos at RCB at 8 chemos when if I moved him to LCB both he and Militao are on full chem. FFS.

In theory you can have infinite players stored unassigned, but you can't open packs while you're doing it.

I'd kept a few packs by from the various puzzle SBCs, Squad Battles rewards and from finishing off the Hybrid Leagues group of SBCs. Packed a decent haul, including Portu, Mandanda, Higuain, Skriniar and Jorginho, when out of the last pack pops the Welsh flag and Gareth Bale. He still sells for about 55k and I can't see that going up higher again in this game cycle so he's straight onto the trade pile.

I ran Florenzi for a while, it’s a good card. An upgrade for him makes an all PSG defence v good at this stage - Kimpembe is OP for an 81, Marquinhos is excellent and that 85 Bernat look like a full back to last right through to TOTS.

I’m sure you know it’s in jest. Albeit, I would absolutely delight in turning you over in Rivals if I faced you.

As usual, my opposition is just that it’s far too easy to defend that way, it removes the skill. Problem is, rely entirely on manual defending and playing a more positive approach and you also make it easy for the opposition to counter, one through ball, keep on the right trigger, cut back, rinse-repeat. I’m not sure what can be done about that - it’s kinda realistic... It does take better players to play Man City football, it is easier to defend when you’re only defending what’s in front of you and dropping deep... the bit that makes it less oppressive in real life is that a) there ain’t no matchmaking for most games of real football - if you’re shit, you still need to play the best in the league; b) to do so for 90 minutes is sapping, and countering effectively is difficult. For b) I don’t think there’s an obvious solution, except maybe having the defending team tire more rapidly.

The nerf to rivals rewards is pretty shitty. My 15500 got me rank 1 by the skin of my teeth last week (Normally 1800-2200 depending on promos etc), as I played a lot on the Thursday, and that’s going to be the only way to do so from here on out. 30 FUT champs games gives you 12000. So you’ve got to make up c3000 in rivals on the Thursday to be in with a shout based on that. A 2W2L record in my first 4 games has given me 2300, so +700 on what FUT Champs would. Ergo, I need to play 16 games at 50/50 results to be in and around rank 1. Savage.

You can still play for objectives and Champs points, but for me there’s zero point in the latter. If they didn’t have that limit on champs points in place I’d be on over 6000 without considering the 2000 I’ve already spent on this weekend or the 2000 they gave all of last weekends entrants for the delay.

Anyhow, it’s first world problems and all, but bloody annoying.

I get the limit in general, it stops it just being a war of attrition... but... that’s kinda what rivals is, given that it’s the most precisely ranked game mode in FIFA, with very little up or downward mobility in the top echelons as a result.

Worse still, you don’t get Rivals points for rage quits in Champs, but the game does come off your limit. So no fucker will ever rage quit, making Champs a longer and more arduous weekend as well.
It’s just a nerf to rewards all around for hardcore players.

Saved some packs from the UCL MMs to open for the promo, and luckily enough I packed myself a Rulebreaker card. Wasn't too enthused by it, as it was Andre, the 83 rated CDM from Lille who didn't look anything special. However, I presume the servers being down has impacted the price of these new cards - he sold instantly for 124k. Crazy money for a card that will surely be under 20k in a few days.

Should scrape rank 1 in D3 again, on 14600 with all my games played. WL got off to a flyer at 9-3 before going 1-5 last night up against super teams and super players, with a few postings. I hate playing in the 1-4am slot as it’s always full of them, but the missus being at home means my time in front of the box is limited to that...

Some decent rewards and I should be able to upgrade to Auba up front with a few other tinkering moves. I’m excited to use him - haven’t done so since he was at Dortmund due to his old M/L work rates but with him now H/H he should be fun.

I had a shaky start last night to WL. 3-4 currently, with two very late losses in there. Worst one of all was a game where I found myself 3-0 down, dragged it back and took it to extra time before going 5-3 up inside the first half, only to lose it 6-5 thanks to my keeper palming in a free kick in the 119th minute.

Defensive upgrades are definitely a must. OTW James is brilliant in midfield though, with 7 goals and 6 assists so far.

Grinding some SBs for the loan Icon objective first, and will try and finish MMs and other SBCs off before cracking back on with the WL today.

Finally got to 11 wins - that was tough going for my first WL on FIFA 21. Slipped to 6-10 and was letting a shedload of goals in early on in games putting me under pressure, and making me chase the game. Thankfully, I won 5 of my next 6 to end up 11-11 and earn a respectable record at least.

I found a lot of opponents would blitz me early on, with heavy press, quick ping-pong passes and constant sprinting. If I could weather the storm, I could pick them off as the game developed. If I slipped behind, I'd chase the game and compromise how I wanted to play.

A number of players need to be mentioned. OTW James ended with 27 goals and 14 assists from 22 games, including multiple screamers. IF Matej Vydra was impressive linking up with him - he scored 23 and assisted 20. Finally, Allan was absolutely brilliant as the box-to-box midfielder. Seemed to win every tackle, and pushed forward to contribute to the tune of 9 goals and 18 assists.

How many of the 4 tactical presets do you use Thommo and what settings do you go for?

At the moment I'm lurching from a drop back/1 depth to a ridiculous all out attack, with the one I use depending on how good the person I'm facing is after 30 minutes in.

My custom tactics are fairly vanilla for now, as I'm still working out what formation is best for me. 4-3-3 (4) was fun this weekend, but does lack some safety at the back. I use attacking and ultra-attacking quite liberally when I'm behind, otherwise I'm on balanced. I'll go defensive VERY rarely if it's a narrow lead late on.

I use both balanced defence and attack for the regular tactic, with 5 depth, and 6 players in box. For attacking, I have press after possession loss on 6 depth, and fast build up in attack with 6 players in box. Ultra attacking is constant pressure on 8 depth and fast build up with 7 players in box.

For the rare occasion I go defensive, it's balanced defence on 4 depth, and possession attack with 5 players in box.

I should experiment more really, but normally every year I stumble upon one I like and stick with it. This year it's 4-4-2.

4-3-3 (4) is my formation of choice at the moment. If only EA could program midfielders to track back, it'd probably be perfect (the technology just isn't there yet)

I went 2-0 up early but then he scored a corner and we shat the bed and were 3-2 down by the end of the first half.

Took the coins from Rivals (70k) to add to the 45k from Champs for me to afford Auba, and managed to get Paulinho (85) from the player picks - I enjoyed his 83 so with 84 Talisca looking awesome for me, he may find his way back into the team. Got Rafael Guerreiro (86) with the other pick.

Also packed Diego Carlos, who I was looking to buy already at 20k, along with Rodrigo who looks a decent supersub and a few 83s. Not bad at all.
