This post has only made me realise it’s not Anderson. I don’t think I know who Clive James was.

The thing with Peart was that not only was he an absolute drum god but he also wrote the majority of the lyrics for the band when he joined as Lee and Lifeson weren't interested in that aspect as much. On top of all his he had a really tragic personal life where he lost both his wife and daughter, travelled around the world on bikes and found new purpose in life with his music. A true legend.

I could never get into Rush. I have a lot of time for proper progressive rock wanker bands who embraced the excesses and stupidity of it all. Rush always felt to me like they were falling between not wanting to do that but not being heavy enough not to be that, so it all just sounded a bit po-faced and boring.

Not everyone is convinced by these theories. Jean-Marie Robine, a gerontologist who helped to validate Jeanne’s age in the 1990s, tells Le Parisien the evidence is flimsy at best. “All of this is incredibly shaky and rests on nothing,” he says, pointing out that Jeanne was able to answer questions only she would have known the answers too, like the name of her math teacher, when he interviewed her. “Her daughter couldn’t have known that.”

:D

It's a good thing gerontology is so well funded and its researchers didn't need to milk the momentary fame afforded them by a prominent old person or that level of pure horseshit might seem suspicious.

We really need a review of what constitutes 'public interest' in the press. It should have happened when some wanker ambushed Gareth Thomas' parents with the news their son was HIV+ before he'd had the conversation with them just so they could get some pictures of the shocked faces. Ideally it would have happened years ago but that should have been a rubicon. Now they've unequivocally played a significant role in the death of someone quite famous, it needs to happen.

So who's fault is this? The justice system? Isn't that what a lot of 'battered' people say?

It's obviously very sad news, but the need to immediately apportion blame is somewhat symptomatic of the culture that is apparently to blame itself.

The Police prosecute Domestic Abusers because funny enough their victims often say what their abusers tell them to - or would want them to - out of fear.

And she didn't hit him, she wrapped a lamp around his sleeping head and covered the room in claret.

You can't stop prosecuting people because they claim they're vulnerable. You'd have serial killers walking free because they felt a bit sad.

Media and social media reform is what we should be looking at. These things must be extremely difficult to handle when played out in public, no matter what your general mental state is. The Sun is a disgrace (shock) and Twitter needs either policing properly or carpet bombing.

I think a distinction has to be made between some poor cunt getting caught up in a media shitstorm (that weirdo in Bristol the papers thought killed that woman, your average poor thicko on Twitter, etc.) and people who are otherwise happy to court any sort of favourable publicity. Jesse Lingard weighed in on this warning against the 'pressure' or social media and press intrusion; but would it be naive to think that if he wasn't rolling all over various platforms building his brand then he would have very little direct feedback on what a wanker he is? There is an element of living by the sword to consider.

Jimmy Floyd

Osman was okay until everyone kept telling him how funny he is and now he's fucking well annoying. Especially when the zany riffing with "xander" stays in the edit cus the head to head doesn't go a third question and they need to kill time.

His philosophy as a tv producer/commissioner is fucking wack too. He had some sorta round table discussion with Frankie Boyle, where Boyle was saying you can make challenging, intellectually demanding tv and ppl will like it, nd Osman was basically, in as many words, saying you should just make mindless shit for the plebs. If the discussion was behind closed doors and Osman trying to diplomatically tell Frankie that tramadol nights was shit fair play, but you can tell he means it.

This was also the worst tweet in existence, and why i respect weird one nation tories like jim and fascists like lewis far more than deranged blairite lib dem freaks like him:

Noted murderer CJ De Mooi was a titan on 100% at one point.

Osman is a good follow on Twitter, not so much for the content he barfs out, but as a means of understanding how these people think. You will often see him go out of his way to heap praise on TV shows that he clearly doesn't personally like, but which he nonetheless considers 'great TV' for their success in accessing pleb eyeballs. On the other hand, on the rare occasion he actually reveals his personal tastes which are in any way esoteric (liking the music of Sufjan Stevens, for example) he'll do so with a tone of great hesitancy and reluctance, as if he's pitching a TV show and a bad public reaction will mean cancellation.

In other words, his entire life is an attempt to be in step with broad public opinion, rather than to make anything that is good for its own sake, or to be relaxed about liking what he likes.

Yeah exactly Jim.

There is the cliche of being a hipster who only likes wholemeal fairtrade bands with 500 listens on spotify and pretentiously eating spaghetti instead of normal pasta shapes which I've deffo been guilty of at times in my life, but Osman is a good example of why trying too hard to NOT be that is just as bad.

You shouldn't be mocked for listening to ABBA but you shouldn't have to apologise for listening to Captain Beefheart.

Indeed - I often think about this passage from Stewart Lee which I read in an interview with him years ago and which on its own turned me away from being the 'inoffensive centrism is good' guy:

He especially regrets the disappearance of the old “support networks”, such as the unemployment and housing benefits, that enabled artists to live cheaply and find their way. “It’s all over. There’ll come a point when somebody will suddenly realise – there’s loads and loads of Coldplay but there isn’t a Radiohead, there’s loads and loads of ITV1 sitcoms, and things with Robert Lindsay in a house, but there isn’t a League of Gentlemen. Someone will be reading an embossed novel about a missing artefact, and they will suddenly think, ‘Didn’t there use to be books that were not just a list of events?’ ” (Lee’s well-known parody of a typical Dan Brown sentence goes: “The famous man looked at the red cup.”) In 40 years, he reckons, people will be saying, “Where’s all that stuff gone that was … good?”

Now obviously there is lots of 'good' stuff out there at the moment but one can very much envisage this world where most people's greatest cultural stimulation is the idea that Bill Bailey is good at dancing and not shit.
