They've been desperate to get Traore in there instead of him for a while.

Don
27-08-2020, 01:08 PM
Traore [quite rightly] got moved to the front three after it became apparent he's wasted as a wing back IIRC. Doherty may also suffer if Spurs go with a flat back 4 but there ain't no denying, he's one of the best out there and will succeed.

Leeds flinging about £30m offers, this time to some physically unimpressive 23 year old Brazillian Lazio CB who is likely to flop but regardless, I don't know who I'll be supporting as my number 1 team this season

Is he out of contract? Not sure why Wolves are getting rid if not. Unless they’re away to be playing Traore there or something

Contracted until 2023. No idea what Wolves are doing. He is 28 and been there since league one. There isnt any replacement at the club at the moment. Troare at RWB. No thanks. Maintland-Niles isnt a RWB either.

Waffdon

Jonny Boy could play there easily enough I guess. If they’re after Maintland-Niles then I presume he’s the RWB they’ll be after

Makes me worry they’re [Wolves] confident of landing Maitland Niles. The guy has the potential to quite the wing back, so it’d be a damned shame. Coupled with the Bellerin to Juve/PSG rumours it’s a bit unsettling.

Eze to Palace done. Looking forward to watching him.

Don
28-08-2020, 01:09 PM
Never watched him play but obviously my contacts keep me informed of the progress of anyone with dreadlocks and his stats did seem majestic but having watched a compilation video, he doesn't look particularly fluid or technically gifted enough to be anything special. Great penalty tekkers though.

I've said it before and I'll say it again because I've just seen another video of a topless Thiago Silva putting on a Chelsea shirt; he's gonna get bullied so hard in the prem it's going to be embarrasing.

Barcelona must be a right shithouse draw right now, so losing out here would be a bit embarrassing (if genuine, let's wait for the plane updates).

niko_cee
29-08-2020, 06:19 PM
I know United 'need creativity' and I have almost no idea of where of how Van Der Beek plays, but wouldn't he be directly competing with the presumably irreplaceable Bruno Fernandes for pitch space? Where does he fit with Pogba as well?

I still think United should be going all out for Ndidi (or someone of that ilk) and maybe a centre-half (if they don't want to give Mike another go) if they want to seriously improve. The attack is fine enough, bit patchy maybe, but I don't see how signing some flouncy albino from Holland is necessarily going to improve a lot in that regard.

Lewis
29-08-2020, 07:25 PM
I sort of agree, but then I remember the shit they were serving up before January and having one too many good midfielders seems like a decent problem to have.

Danny
29-08-2020, 07:33 PM
It wouldnt even be one too many. If you presume the main three are Matic (or Fred if he continues to improve), Bruno and Pogba then the drop off is to Mata, Pereira, Lingard or McTominay. Thats huge. While I think the latter will become a more than serviceable Prem player another good option would be huge

Everton have agreed a fee for Allan from Napoli.

niko_cee
29-08-2020, 08:44 PM
Doesn't seem like it's going to be a good signing. Biffing the budget on some 29 year old who's played most of his career in Italy and 'Hamez' Rodriguez seems a bit of an odd policy to me. Couldn't they just get Gueye back off PSG for a fraction of what they sold him for?

Additionally, if Chelsea are going to chuck £90m at Havertz why don't they just not bother and send that A.Madrid's way (+Kepa) for Oblak? I'm sure some sort of mutually beneficial transfer scam could be arranged, those two are on pretty good terms generally, aren't they?

Mourinho usually likes a back 5 that morphs into a back 4. Last season Davies stayed back whilst Aurier was expected to transition between RB and RM. Unfortunately Aurier is an absolute bombscare and is guaranteed a clanger every other game.

Can't say I ever noticed Doherty for Wolves, but being an improvement on Aurier should be pretty easy. Just being competent would do.

niko_cee

He'll go somewhere better next summer. PSG will probably want a centre-half, or Bayern, their defence is hardly stellar.

You'd probably have to chuck them £60m and then loan him back for a season for them to think about it, which would be mental and would never ever happen.

Additionally, as and when Upemacano becomes available I'd be amazed if City weren't all over him.

Although I guess the defence is going on the back burner again this summer so they can sign Messi. That deal, using their MLS team to pay some sort of insane signing on fee in 3 years or whatever it is sounds completely on the level.

Jo-say's Spurs to run riot.

But then I thought last season would be exciting because City and Liverpool would drop off and the rest of the field would catch-up.

I think in all likelihood City will piss it and Liverpool are the only other team with any hope of getting the 90+ points it'll take to win the league if they can pull of yet another freak season. Being more exciting is rarely the way to actual success. You need to go through that phase, maintain it, but somehow then add a veneer of boring consistency without losing too much of the attacking verve.

It'd be nice to think that 4 or 5 teams could be in with a shout come April (or even December) but I doubt it'll happen.

Coin toss between Liverpool and City at the top. Could be swayed one way or the other by some signings. Especially the big one. The 2 clubs have made it so you just don't scrape over the line now, you need at least a mid-90 point finish which is mental.

Chelsea and United will be comfortably in a battle for 3rd, clear of Arsenal in 5th who in turn will be comfortable over Spurs.

Wolves selling their best(and only?) right back for buttons is the kind of thing to push then to Burnleys steady 12th place level.

They've talked about Van De Beek potentially coming for about a month and reported it was done the night before it came out in the media. Tracked Matt Judge's flight as well (probably) :D

Grealish was apparently all verbally agreed and then Villa suddenly upped their price and Utd backed out.

Some better sources starting to talk about Upamecano to Utd today. There's even some claims the release clause might technically be able to be triggered this window due to the wording but I expect that's bollocks.

What’s the update on Saul and Sancho since Grealish is out the window? Did I not give you odds of 5/1 for just one of them to happen? Lolz

They should probably sell Bellerin. £25m-£30m seems nice all things considered. He isnt a top 3 right back in the league. Cut him off and use the funds elsewhere

Beating the teams worse than Arsenal is worth about 80 points. Beating the teams better is worth 30 something.

Playing out from the back has become more common, left footed players can hit the ball at angles a right footer can't.

Also Arsenal aren't going to be winning many of those matches against better teams with their all out defence tactic. It might yield a few draws and the odd win, perhaps, which I suppose would be an improvement. Their game against Liverpool in week 3 or whatever it is could be interesting. There can't have been many more enigmatic players over a prolonged period than Mike Smalling. He has whole years where he looks like he should have stayed at Maidenhead or wherever it was, then he'll go the other way and be really good for seasons and be back in the international set-up. They're all still there. If they're good enough (Mount, possibly James, possibly Abraham), they'll play.

The attacking ones won't play.

Presumably James might get a run at rightback (or is Azplicueta still soldiering on?) and Mount might get some game time because he's Lampard's pet, but, realistically, the attacking 4 are going to be all the expensive signings. Having faith in the young players was force of circumstance and it's clearly gone out the window now they can spend money again, probably rightly. Bit of a shame that they've gone from prospectively having 4 or 5 youth players in the first XI to, probably 1 at most.
