Excellent, so I accidentally 'held my fare' with RyanAir and it had absolutely no option to remove. Since the site said 'only 3 seats left at this price!' I didn't want to start again so I just went to checkout and buy now thinking it won't 'hold it' and just buy me the fucking tickets.

Nope, it held it and charged me £15. So now I have to buy the tickets, but I have no idea if my seat reservations are still there, because the price has went back down to unreserved. :)

Berlin's a great city but I imagine I just did all the touristy stuff, so nothing more to add than those really.

I had been there before too, and it really is great for the touristy stuff and just hanging around. Have to say though that only thing I think Berlin could do better is pubs/bars. I guess that's more down to me not liking beer, but pretty much all the big cities I've been to have a better selection of bars and pubs. Same goes somewhat for restaurants too, though there's a ton of nice places if you don't mind spending a bit. Overall, it's one of the best places to have a long weekend in.

Lljubljana is lovely but it's 'doable' in a couple of nights as it's not big, so you might want to plan a few day trips which would be well worth your time. Lake Bled is the obvious one, and if you can spend a bit more time there get the Bohinj railway down to Nova Gorica and back (you could cross over into the Italian border from Nova Gorica). There's also the Vintgar gorge near Bled. If you want to cross over into Croatia then Zagreb's worth a visit, and on the coast I think Rijeka's meant to be nice but haven't been. Anything else is probably too far down I imagine. Slovenia is the most beautiful country I've visited.

Thanks for this. We have already decided to go to lake Bled and a few other places (Nova Gorica is on the maybe list). Trieste is the only place outside of Slovenia we've been thinking as we have hopes of doing Croatia (and Albania, Motenegro and Bosnia) next summer.

Berlin's famed for its nightlife isn't it? I went to one or two Bierkeller's when I was there which were okay, but the only thing I remember was the striking heat. It was still mid-20s at midnight iirc.

I've been to coastal Croatia which is great, and Bosnia too. They're a fair distance from Slovenia and northern Croatia though. There's nothing much in Nova Gorica by the way, you'd just go there to start/end the railway trip.

Most of the people I know think highly of Berlin's nightlife, but it's not as good as I've experienced in other major cities (tbf I haven't seen much of nigthlife in Berlin). Kreuzberg would probably be more to my liking as far as nightlife goes there, but I haven't had time to spend many nights there during my stay. Maybe what I'm getting at is that it's easier to find decent bars and pubs all over the city with less effort in other big cities.

About four times economy, twice premium economy on that flight, so it's tempting as a one-off. As Kiko says, it's potentially not worth it so much on a shorter flight, although it appears first class on long-haul is closer to £10k, so that's a complete no-go.

The main problems with London are how crowded it is and how dirty it is. Using the tube is the absolute pits - it's roasting, completely over-crowded and you basically need to shower in bleach after venturing down into the system. That and the unions can grind the entire city to a halt, much to the chagrin of your average tourist who insists on stopping on every bridge to take the same picture from eighteen different angles.

niko_cee
05-06-2016, 09:27 PM
The tube is for novices who don't know how to use the buses. It's also not that bad.

I do remember getting quite a bit of 'London rage' when I went back there for a day after being posted to Bristol for a few months, although I did go back to Notting Hill for the afternoon, which is perhaps enough to drive any sane person to serious violence. You do get out of the swing of the bustle. I've been out for 4 years and I can only imagine it has become infinitely worse.

GS
05-06-2016, 09:36 PM
I once had someone sprint and then barge to get past me in the queue for the escalator at the tube. He then just stood there, one whole step in front of me, whilst it plodded down at its own pace. Then I got down to the tube itself and found that the next train was delayed because of a 'broken down train' further along the line.

London in a nutshell. Avoid.

I find the tube to be pretty good, to be honest. It's not like some air conditioned modern electrical thing the Chinese would build, but it's 150 years old, so you have to make allowances.

Getting annoyed by other people on London transport is a waste of your time. The key thing to realise is that the other people simply are not there, in a sociological sense, purely in a physical sense.

GS
05-06-2016, 09:42 PM
The tube is worse because you go down into it during the winter with your coat and scarf on, only to find it's borderline impossible to wear anything other than a wife beater and shorts while you're down there.

By the time you emerge on the other side, you're so caked in sweat that you practically need a change of clothes to get through the day without feeling like a complete gypo.

There's no alternative in London given the state of the road system, but that doesn't stop it being shit to use and best avoided for the overground trains and/or walking where at all possible.

Boris' new cycling lanes / routes seem intent on grounding parts of the city to a halt as well. There's some up near South Bank Theatre which appear to have ground the entire road system nearby to an intolerable crawl.

I've got four and a half weeks of holiday to use between now and December.

I should probably do what I've been telling myself to do for about five years and go somewhere on an actual holiday on my own.

I've barely seen anything of Europe so some of the big cities would be the obvious choice.

I know some of the people on here have done solo holidays. Any recommendations?

I'm down in London in October for the gridiron and, given I've only ever done a flying visit, I am considering going down for a few extra days as well.

Doing Madrid/Barcelona is appealing, I might look into the cost of doing a few cities over the course of a week/fortnight.

Most Eurochange places will do it but you'll probably want to order in advance online if you are taking a lot.

Enjoy - Croatia is fantastic. Cheap when you're over there too.

I'm back home from Corfu on Thursday. Definitely should have booked Friday off to delay the onset of my post-holiday depression. The fucking emails, for fuck's sake.

The beauty is that it's never going to be hot. So if it's a cold but clear day you get the same enjoyment out of wandering along the beach enjoying the scenery.

I went to st Ninians isle in Shetland about ten times when I was there. Not once was it warm/sunny but that doesn't detract from it being absolutely beautiful.

If you are going to persist with that foolishness the Rangers game is a great idea. Go to a Jewish deli (even if run by Koreans) but make sure they are selling schmaltz and chopped liver. Or go to a soul food place that is serving Southern 'meat and three' style and get the collard greens.

Sitting in the airport waiting to fly home to Louisiana for my uncle's funeral in New Orleans while reading news stories about the flooding in Baton Rouge with up to 20,000 people displaced. Second time I've flown back to a natural disaster but at least this time it is not in my hometown.

Outside of an Irish bar showing Sky Sports and serving a roast in 35 degree weather, Tenerife wasn't anything like the tacky neon mess you get elsewhere on the island. Teide and La Gomera are amazing.

My friend swears by la gomera. Says its a bit of an arse to get to though.

Got any snaps of it wullie?

I was told the only way to get there is the ferry from Los Cristianos, although it does have some kind of airport so that might be bollocks. The tour we did takes in pretty much the whole island, and it's bizarre how you go through a tunnel in lush forest under a mountain and then come out in a bare lunar landscape.

Had to fly from Phoenix to Atlanta then back to New Orleans. On the flight to Atlanta, the pilot pointed out the flood zone which you could see from the plane. It is insane because that area is where we evacuate to from New Orleans during hurricanes because it doesn't flood. Towns like Livingston will have 50,000 plus homes that are all a total loss because none of them will have flood insurance. At least between our famed Cajun Navy and the National Guard there is some semblance of actual disaster response this time instead of cops barricading a bridge with shoot to kill orders.

Pretty sure I walked past Toby in Krakow yesterday.

On top of a possible Toby sighting, I have to say that Krakow was a brilliant destination for a long weekend trip. Loads of interesting stuff to see, compact enough to take on on foot, beautiful women and everything is dirt cheap.

Only just missed you, spent all last week in it and got home Friday. Absolutely brilliant spot.

Speaking of glamourous locales, how was your visit to Scotland, Giggles?

I'm just at my mum's after a few days in the Isle of Man. Was planning to go somewhere more exciting but was having issues getting my passport sorted. Confirmed my suspicion that I'm more than happy spending a few days mooching about a place in my own company so at some point next year if there isn't a more appealing option of a holiday with somebody then I'm definitely going to see somewhere new in Europe.

It ended up a bit of a bust as I flew up from London a day late and had to go in across 3 different shifts so I had no chance to get up into Glasgow. Did get an epic feed in a Toby one night at 10pm though

I came there last Thursday so we did have one evening of possible close calls.

I stayed in the Garden Inn the last night so I may have been leering at you coming from the airport while I was out having a fag.

Trying to book more short trips around Europe as I really enjoyed Krakow and I don't have that many vacation days to use. London and Stockholm are probably the next two on the list after Copenhagen as a birthday getaway in few weeks. If only I wouldn't have to work at all :(

Also, I checked if I did see Toby and I'm pretty sure I did as he was in Krakow that day according to Facebook.

We wouldn't do well at the LADBANTER so I propose something civilised like SMS group messaging.

Been looking at these. Some of them look pretty suicidal but others look pretty great. I love the idea of the Antarctica one but it's pretty unlikely I'd ever go through with it. Think the Caucasus one is winning so far.

Their 'Eurasian tour' looks a laugh and a half.

The tour starts in Beijing, with an overnight stay and optional visit to the Mausoleum of Chairman Mao, before embarking on the 6 day epic that is the Trans-Mongolian, or the “party train” as it also known. We already have a number of people signed up for this part, so if you are considering taking the train anyway, why not join us fun young people?

Following our arrival in Moscow, we start to fully embrace Soviet nostalgia by visiting all of Moscow’s top sites, before taking the train to the most Soviet of all republics Belarus and its capital Minsk, where we will be seeing such treasures as the former residence of Lee Harvey-Oswald, as well as staying in our own little pimping apartment.

This leads us on to group 3, our big group, where we will be visiting not only Pripyat (Chernobyl), but also doing the extreme missile base tour, as well as sampling the night time delights on a bar crawl. Our contacts in Pripyat mean, we can usually sneak in some secret sites that we are not even allowed to blog about!

After group 3 leave us in Kiev, group 4 will continue firstly to Odessa, then onto Tiraspol, capital of the breakaway republic of Transnistria. If you do not know anything about the place, Google it. And if you want off the beaten track, this is it. We really mix it up here by having one night in a very very Soviet hotel before transferring to a slightly more luxurious offering in the countryside, a true Soviet time warp. Following a few nights here, we visit Moldova, the only ex-Soviet republic to vote the communists back in, before taking the overnight bus to Bucharest, which as a flight hub and will make it easier to arrange onward flights.

Group 5 completes the full communist chic element, with us visiting the former homes of Ceausescu, Tito, and Hoxha, via Romania, Macedonia and Albania, as well as visiting the contemporary hot spots that are Mitrovica and Kosovo before finishing in Albania.

Group 6 will be moving on to the beautiful capital of Montenegro – Podgorica. After a days exploration, it’s across the border to Belgrade to take in the sights of this incredible city, before moving onto Sarajevo, Mount Igman to see the abandoned and crumbling ruins from the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympic Games., Zagreb and a final night as we say goodbye to group 6 in Ljubljana and cheers each other one last time with promises of reunions!

For our first ever Group 7 Eurasian Tour, we truly complete the adventure before traveling along the rest of the Iron Curtain through Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Poland, meaning all former Warsaw Pact countries being visited throughout the trip.

They make it sound like you need to be a quite dangerous nutcase to get the most out of it.
