Back from Japan. Some notes, and thanks to all for the recommendations.

It's awesome, with some caveats. My first week in Tokyo was awesome - loved the atmosphere, the vibe, the tech, the hustle; Shibuya, Shinjuku, SkyTree, Gardens, Golden Gai, Electric town prob my favourite, red light district was lame, everything else was boss. Sumo, footy and basketball were all great.

Then went to the mountains (Gunma) for 3 days, which was great and somehow reminded me of England (landscape, weather).

Interestingly, when back to Tokyo I was kinda ready to leave. Tired of talking to machines, tired of the size of the place, tired of the lack of genuine sincere interactions and waiting at a red light without a car in sight.

Would deffo return, however, would certainly go to Osaka, Kyoto and the west coast.

All in all, top notch.

Whoever has been doing propaganda for Edinburgh is a genius because it is proper ordinary. I liked the castle and its museums, but generally speaking it would disappear in the list of British cathedral places, and that's without every other shop being a shit tourist one and everything costing twice what it would elsewhere. I think making clear the reality of having that as your capital would be the best argument against Scottish independence.

That and the faux-posh Scottish accent is possibly more annoying than the faux-posh English one. Talk properly.

Jimmy Floyd

Proper old school posh accents are much better than the public school cunt mockney ones which are now prevalent in those circles.

It does sound like a lot of effort to talk how Michael Gove talks.

It's basically Bristol if every other shop sold Stonehenge fridge magnets and Manchester United stuff, they swapped Somalians for jugglers and suitcase-wielding tourists, and made every breakfast twenty quid. But I've been there now, I've been to Thurso, and work are threatening me with a beano to the Outer Hebrides, so I'm well-placed to have completed Scotland within the next year.

I'm going to Copenhagen in December. Anything decent to do there that I shouldn't miss?

Just having a bit of a catch up in this thread. I went to Copenhagen last summer and enjoyed it. I did some tours through Airbnb as I went on my own, one of which was a bike tour which took me to places I wouldn't have otherwise gone, in particular Christiania. Do some research before you go as it's dangerous, but certainly an interesting place. Other than that, I liked Tivoli Gardens and there are a couple of nice parks outside the centre in Frederiksberg near where I was staying. I also went on a boat tour with www.heycaptain.dk which was well worth it.

This year I've been to Seville and Como. I'll probably go to Lake Garda next year to compare.

I generally try not to judge on nationality as you get decent people and cunts in every country, but Russia really is the exception that proves the rule, isn't it? Loud, rude, no understanding of queues or waiting their turn and happy to just shout at people for any minor incident.

Today a Russian woman shouted at a Dutch / German kid because - I assume, she did the shouting in Russian - he was taking too long on the pool ladder. The kids dad then had to beat a hasty retreat when her roid monster Husband got up from his sunbed. :happycry:

For NY, do you mean like "things to do" or bars/restaurants?

My sister's finally given me dates for a proposed NYC trip. September. £1500pp. Not a chance. March is too soon for her which is currently half the price. :moop:

Tips? Standard stuff like booking the trips out to Ellis Island/Liberty Island. Book that stuff in advance. I didn't bother with the Empire State building but you do get a top view of the city from there. Another one you definitely need to book in advance for. Manhattan's fairly walkable but the subway's convenient. Just got to tolerate the homeless and the rats. I'd recommend walking the Brooklyn Bridge but it will always be busy. For something close to peace and quiet, Central Park is nice.

Can't say much about food/drink because I most hit the food trucks for convenience. As for museums and such, I bloody love the Intrepid. It's a big aircraft carrier that I loved poking around in. And it has a Blackbird on the flight deck. And a Concorde. And a Space Shuttle. And a Submarine. I didn't visit the 9/11 one but I wish I had.

Both. Also is it better to book a package flight and hotel or separate, any hotels to avoid? Want to tour the Ghostbusters locations like Hook and Ladder 8, the library, Tavern on the Green etc if possible. There's actually an Ecto 1 replica tour that does it all but costs a lot. Think the wife wants to do the natural history museum too. Will mix it up with eating cheap and a nice meal or too, a good steakhouse maybe.

My knowledge is a 5 years or so old, so bear in mind, but I'd probably try and stay in Manhattan if you can. Brooklyn/Williamsburg also good options if you don't mind being a little out the centre but the Metro is fine for getting around.

Museums/stuff has mostly been covered above. I like the Rockefeller Center and the view from Top Of The Rock. Other than that just hit all the major stuff like Times Square (meh, but check out Katz's Delicatessen), Central Park, museums etc. My wife did a tour of Staten Island which she said was cool.

Was trying to find a direct flight from Phuket to Koh Samui for later this week and none were showing on the date I wanted, not even on the airline's website.

Was resigned to taking an indirect flight but the best one's on Skyscanner were not available when I clicked through.

Decided just to take a punt on Googling the flight and it found me the direct flight via Bangkok Airways' website (which wasn't showing at all on their site) and about 95% of the plane was free and I was able to book it.

What the fuck is going on there?

We went to Amsterdam last week, very cold but very nice. Also the first time anywhere without the five year old which was like some kind of magical dream, as much as we love her. Hotel was an arty poncy one where there was no reception, instead the staff were just 1/2 people hanging around on laptops and the breakfast room was continually restocked with pastries and later in the day, pick 'n' mix for some reason. Instead of a bar anyone staying there had free run of the fridge so it meant at least I didn't have to pay money anywhere to find out jenever is absolutely rancid.

Madeira was good. Funchal is nice but you can do it all in an afternoon. The cable car and the toboggan bollocks was alright, and the Ronaldo museum was proper lol but only a few euros to get into so worth a look. It is replicas of the all Champions' Leagues, Premierships, etc. that he has won along with what must surely be replicas of his individual trophies. I say surely because you would expect him to have his Golden Boots and that in his house, but I'm prepared to accept that the Barclays Player of the Month and whatever award some Madrid newspaper gave him were the real deal. It was the only place on the island that I say any concentration of Indians (presumably working on the cruise ships), which makes me think its primary purpose is to serve as the island's fly paper.

Hiring a car and driving around was the highlight, and with the benefits of hindsight another day doing that would have been worthwhile to do the Eastern side of the island as well. You can just drive around in the hills and the views from random stopping points were all spectacular.

I'm going there this year - any tips?

Going for a few days in Dubrovnik, Hvar and Split

I stayed in Cavtat, nice and quiet and took the boat a couple of days to Dubrovnik. Can’t offer any real tips sorry, we just basically mooched for a week. There was a surprisingly nice Sushi place in the old Dubrovnik town, as I thought everything there would be tat, and there’s a small craft brewery in Dubrovnik does real nice bar food.

The sushi place one of the first few restaurants on the right you come to after doing the full walk of the walls now that I think of it.

Proper 90s father directions.

"What's the street name?"

"Count four speed bumps and after the Pepsi sign turn left."

*Irish.

Past the stone wall after Joe's field and third on your right. No, not young Joe's field, his father Joe's other field, the one where the horses used to be. No, not Joe's horses, Declan's horses, so they were.

I was in that London over the weekend and came across the excellently named Mincing Lane (https://maps.app.goo.gl/CpefQPYuDPPUFqoN8) and if that wasn't good enough it was followed up with the even better named Seething Lane (https://maps.app.goo.gl/EvL6yTZHKa4yzp216) 50 yards down the road. Nearly stopped to take a pic for future use of the latter.

I'll see if I spot them when I'm down there at the weekend. :D

London seems canny so far, although I was nearly crushed in Southwark by the sheer popularity of the market.

Homelessness is there but the place doesn't stink like the major US cities do. Plus there's loads or ornate fancy buildings.

How have you never been to London before?

Did Mahow ever come back or does Bangkok have him now?

I've barely had the urge to. I'd connect through Heathrow for flights further afield but never stopped in the city.

London doesn’t have the appeal I think many thinks it does. If I hadn’t gone for work a decade ago for a few weeks and roamed I wouldn’t have been because I wouldn’t have chosen to myself. way too busy.

It's definitely packed in a way old streets can't handle. Tomorrow's going to be insufferable.

I did come back.

I liked Thailand a lot but it wasn't for me and I wouldn't go again.

How can you like somewhere a lot but it not be for you? Genuinely interested rather than that being a dig btw.

I enjoyed my holiday but I wouldn't go again.

I didn't like the smell it was a heady mix of weed and durian both smells I dislike on their own and together they were an assault at times.

It was too crowded in places and there were far too many Brits. I could have gone to other areas which weren't as touristy, especially with Brits which would have helped with that but oh well.

I did like the food (although despite always saying "spicy" I never had anything that blew my head off unless I kept adding chillies/sauces/dips myself), the people were friendly and I saw and experienced a lot of things that I never have before and likely wont again.

Edit: Actually, having thought about it the Brits were mostly fine. The Russians were bad though.

I've been thinking all week about how many near misses I've seen on London's roads. Turns out a van has smashed into some pedestrians on The Strand.

I'm in (at?) Efteling in the Low Countries. Quality place, even if the roads of these lands are entirely impervious to satellite navigation. Damn thing kept changing its mind interminably. Had no idea there would also be so many cool houses in and about both Holland and perhaps even more surprisingly Belgium. Would definitely be up for some kind of cycling tour of the brewery lands around Westvleteren.

Italy next month. How stupid would I be to attempt driving over there?

It's fine.

I'd suggest breaking it up into manageable parts (and/or have someone else so you can switch) as it will make it more enjoyable.

Me and my Mum drove from Bologna and it was grand, I did most of the stuff in and around the Alps as my Mum is scared of driving at altitude but I don't have a problem with it.

I'm on a tight schedule so I'll be just around Milan.

I've known a few people who have done Poland which is 19 hours or so stopping only for food/petrol/toilet.

Obviously you're going to be doing more than that but you'll have two ferries/one ferry and a channel tunnel.

How long are you going for too? I'd probably suggest not bothering if it's sub 2 weeks personally.

I'm in Munich this week. I've been here many times and never has it felt more like a country in a steep decline. All the talk is of the car industry collapsing and the Chinese taking over, the streets are dirty, the infrastructure is barely working. I'd like to say it feels like home but honestly, even current Britain feels more optimistic than this.

Unless you mean driving from Ireland, it's fine. Italy is quite entertaining to drive in, not sure anywhere is worse to drive in than Britain generally. The Dutch and Belgians do seem to be fond of massive far left lane to far right lane after a junction switches though.

The Dutch and Belgians sound like the Irish. So long as they also bomb from lane 3 to exit as well.

The inner cities are the only place you’d ever have an issue with.

I’m not sure what’s most efficient but while driving try make the most of that pass through the peaks between Switzerland and Italy. It’s a truly beautiful thing to experience, especially in the spring/summer.

Not a Munich I've experienced. Anyway come to Frankfurt and have some skag with me.
