Once you escape the airport complex (usually the time needed for you brain to adjust to everything being different) driving on the right is a piece of piss. Even driving a manual car is fine, which I thought would be more tricky (having driven automatics in the US).

What's golf abroad like in somewhere like Portugal? Is it really posh and fancy or is it fairly normal?

Depends what your expectations are. The courses/facilities are pretty nice and have your standard golfing dress codes, but these are essentially third world regions which need your money, so there isn't the snobbery and arseholery you get at golf clubs back home. All the clientele tend to be just middle aged blokes getting away from their wives for a weekend.

I am crap at golf (don't even play to 28 most days) and I've had three very enjoyable trips now, two to Portugal and one to La Manga.

We'll be looking at 5-7 days and will stay in fairly cheap accommodation, while wanting to eat everything worth eating, see the things worth seeing and probably drink every night. Could somebody that has been give me a rough estimate of how much I'd need to take with me?

To go anywhere good music wise it'll cost you more than that. From what I hear the only Hip-Hop clubs still going in NY are bottle service places where 90% of the dance floor has been replaced by tables.

From what I understand there's no middle ground anymore. It's Dive Bars or expensive bars themed as Dive Bars and Clubs.

Combat Jack did a podcast with that guy El-P works with who owns a club in NY (Dipset? Defuse? Begins with a D) who said the whole things a nightmare because as soon as there's more than 5 black people in one place, the cops raid it.

Offshore Toon

You're a banker, go see the world's first bank in Siena. The interior of the duomo in Siena is fantastic (better than in Florence), especially the little side room. Otherwise go see St. Catherine's head and her house of birth. If you walk a bit from the cathedral with her head there's a great view on the city.

Florence is so full of things it's almost futile, you can't go wrong in two days. Boboli Gardens are meant to be really good but they close weirdly early so don't fuck up like I did. Look for the MASSIVE flocks of birds at sunset around the train station (disclaimer, may not happen every day). The Ponte Vecchio is shit but the walk downstream along the Arno is lovely in the late afternoon.

Just back from Paris, loved it. I was expecting a huge dirty and bustling city I'd just grumble my way around, but it seemed a lot more compact and welcoming with everything being close by, although we must have covered about 25 miles walking overall. I'm off to Berlin in a couple of weeks. Any tips?

Worthwhile sights requiring booking / booking suggested.

1. Dome of the Reichstag - you can book in advance or there's a portacabin across the road where you can book in for the next day or two. Suggest booking in advance.
2. The top of the TV tower in Alexanderplatz - very busy, only let a few up at a time, can usually get it for the following day or queue if you wish.

Other things worth seeing:

1. Berlin Cathedral - a few Euros to get in, but very good. Can go to the dome and walk around, and has the tombs of the Hohenzollern dynasty in the crypts.
2. Various museums - they're just beside the cathedral, but the queue can be significant and you might struggle to get in. I haven't had a chance to go yet.
3. Potsdamer Platz - main eating / shopping area.
4. Charlottenburg Palace - very good. It was about 15 euros to get in with an audio guide, but definitely worth the money. The gardens in the back etc. are great (and free)
5. Prussian victory monument - just up from the Reichstag - you can go up for a couple of euro, I recall. There's gardens nearby with decent seating and food options.
6. Tiergarten - there's a huge Soviet monument to WWII here commemorating the defeat of the fascists.
7. Brandenburg Gate - this is an obvious one. The bus tours leave from here, and it's beside the holocaust memorial.
8. The former HQ of the Gestapo (I think) - the building has been demolished, but there's an exhibition etc. here. It's okay (and free) - there's an original section of the Berlin Wall outside which is preserved.
9. Checkpoint Charlie - this isn't great. The actual checkpoint itself outside is cool enough to see, but the actual museum itself is just loads of Wikipedia articles printed onto massive boards and then pinned onto walls. I wouldn't bother going in.
10. Potsdam - you can get the train down, and the lakes etc. are great
11. Sachsenhausen - train again - it's grim, but interesting to see.
12. Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church - it's at the end of the main shopping street.

You can hit the majority of these with the hop on, hop off bus tour, so I'd suggest using that as a starting point for getting around.

Their old secret police headquartes (Stasi? I always get these mixed up) is grimm as fuck but very good and interesting. There was also a park full of old Soviet monuments a short bus ride outside Budapest that was pretty cool. The main castle area had a few nice history things as well. Actually thinking back Budapest was pretty good for historical and architectural stuff in general.

They're pretty well known for their spas I think. Food wise I think Budapest was pretty good too, but I'd advice you to look into that a bit in advance as most places didn't look that great (this might be different now as it was ages a go that I went). I quite like spotted by locals as one of the sites to look for restaurants, it's usually quite good.

To elaborate, a snapshot of what i saw over 36 hours:

It's fairly compact, you can walk nearly everywhere, but there's plenty to do. Great food, great shops, great cafes. There's a huge theme park a 20 minute walk from the city center for some reason, as well as a dope science center/indoor rainforest place with snakes and sloths

The people are polite and speak perfect English. There are very few tourists.

It's clean.

I think the best thing about it is how transport works. There are barely any cars, there's never any traffic, and cars always stop for pedestrians at crossings. There are bike lanes everywhere. The trams are good as well. I think this, more than anything leads to a harmonious city experience.

I am not on commission.

I was flying back from Greece and the cheapest way of doing it was via here. Obviously that was nullified by getting a hotel and the flight a day later though lol.

It's expensive but not outrageously so, probably around London prices.

Four star hotel: 700 SEK
Return ticket from airport to city center: 180 SEK
A pint of beer: 50-60 SEK
This excellent wrap (sausage, mash, berries, crispy onions etc.) http://m.imgur.com/fDxQjuy : 60 SEK
Cappuccino and a croissant: 64 SEK

It's a lovely place. You should try Kinsale too, it's even nicer. Definitely better for staying in anyway, we did the west coast last year and finished up there for a few days.

As for Italian food, I just don't like it. It's all wishy washy oily tomato and nothing has any punch in it. Pizza is ok but always a bit meh for me compared to other takeaways, but I'd still rather one with a proper American base instead of that weird dry bread they use in Italy.

I also accidentally walked into Checkpoint Charlie (traveling without internet is so much better) which was interesting for about 5 minutes.

Tonight I'm off to the Union Berlin match and then there seems to be a cool rooftop bar nearby which I'll try hit up.

If you pay the Brandenburg Gate a visit spend a while walking around the area near it with all the embassies, there's some fun to be had with the contrast. The Russian embassy is a ridiculous building, with the hammer and sickle chiselled into the side of the building, a huge fence with painted gold eagles on it, and a load of Cyrillic text presumably paying tribute to Stalin all over the place. Then the Romanian embassy about a hundred yards away is basically someone's house with 'ROMANIAN EMBASSY' above the door. They don't even have a flag.

Be prepared to queue for half an hour only for big Sven or his lackey to tell you to fuck off though. It is worth it if you do get in I reckon, and you stand a better chance if you're on your own/speak german/dressed all in black.

Just out of travel agents there. Down to Zakynthos, Sorrento, and some place 10km from Dubrovnik. Still not sure though, the Greek one is a fair whack cheaper than Italy but there seems to be less to see in it. I'd be afraid it would be too full of 'innits' too, though Croatia could be similar.

EDIT: Cavtat.

I don't think you'll like Sorrento Giggles. Very traditional Italian restaurants etc. Food is really fantastic. That's where I got married.

Wullie give Positano a go, it's really nice.

Yeah I was thinking that. Looks like it'll be Croatia then as, even though the hotel and package in Zakynthos looks the best of the lot the agent said there's lots of kids and lots of English. Never thought I'd be heading for eastern Europe for it. I'll be in Hostel 5

Slovenia is great. We went there last year and if you have a car you can do so many different things in quite a short amount of time. I assume by lake places you mean lake Bled which is gorgeous albeit a tad small, but if you gi there you could also do quite a few other places too. Piran was great and I'd recommend going across the border to Trieste too.

I stayed in a small town called Sant Agati, just outside Sorrento. Cheaper restaurants, less touristy and amazing views down to the bay. I did my excursions through here:

Dubrovnik and Split are both pretty great, especially the former although it's more touristy and expensive. Lake Bled in Slovenia is possibly the best place I've been.

Yeah now that I check, I see it's only 80mins from Sorrento. The Ischia one looks a bit long for me to be on a boat.

What's the site for all this stuff nowadays? Still tripadvisor? I've Google Trips installed on my phone and it's pulled up some info based on my reservation emails, but there doesn't look to be a massive pile of stuff.

If you're flying into Naples I'd recommend getting the ferry over to Sorrento instead of driving round. Takes half the time and the views are incredible.

You can get the ferry from Sorrento to Capri as well and another one goes round to Positano.

Vesuvius and Pompeii are about half an hour from Sorrento as well.

Where are you staying? We had our reception in Palazzo Marziale but we stayed round the corner in La Favorita.

Giggles

Never knew that was an option, though I think she's already booked an airport pickup with the hotel.

That Favorita was one that the agent said, but we thought it looked too fancy and they'd only do half board also. Can't remember the name of ours, Minerva springs to mind but that could be one of the Cavtat ones we near booked.

You'll love the 2 way coastal highway that is about 1.5 lanes wide.

Do some research on ferry times for Capri. Sailings aren't as often during the day as I thought and I ran out of time.

Is most of it not just fatty ham?

I don't mind pasta, it's their sauces (or a pint of olive oil) that they put on it. At least with chips you add the stuff on top yourself.

Their main courses if you go to a decent Italian restaurant are usually things like chicken, beef, lamb etc as well as fish. They love their veal actually.

The most classical Italian dinner that I can think of is something like this (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ossobuco). Though I doubt you'd see it so much down in Sorrento.

That's a decent little bit. That harbour has two really good restaurants. Only thing letting it down is the lack of a beach. The elevator built into the lift up from that marina is pretty cool as well.

Anyone know how I'd go about getting tickets for Porto - Pacos de Ferreira next weekend? Nothing on the website and viagogo is a total farce. Anyone know if we'll stand a chance if we just rock up before kick-off? I daresay it'll be a popular game?

(@Kikó ?)

Jimmy Floyd

At the ground surely, in the morning or day before. Not been to Portugal but everywhere in Spain (not the big two) seems to work like that and presumably Porto don't fill it with their 'members' or whatever for that sort of game.

-james-
03-05-2017, 09:27 PM
Yeah, I suppose so, average attendance figures don't seem to indicate weekly sell-outs now that I've checked.

I was just surprised at there being none on the website and viagogo charging about 12 times what I'm paying for a night's rent for a single ticket. They really are despicable.

When are you going Giggles? If we're there at the same time

Left Istanbul after 3 weeks. Strange city. A week would probably be perfect if you're only doing tourist things. My last day I took a ferry out to this island with no cars, filled with old horse carriages and you can rent a bike and bike around the entire island. It was incredible (and the exact opposite of the rest of Istanbul).
