Our generation is just a bunch of infantilised twats. Probably not all entirely their fault since a lot of the normal markers of adulthood have been moved beyond their financial grasp.

Fuck houses, mate. What are you buying the house with? I'm talking about a third of the adult population having no savings whatsoever. Is the £3000 on a child's toy woman popping into Lloyds to start an ISA/Fixed-Bond/Pension Fund? Nah.

What are the average savings of a 40-year-old UK? The average savings for a 40-year-old in the UK is around £6,751.

I find that number very low and it can't all just be 'well, times are tough'. How many people are actually smart with their money, Boydy? And when I say smart, I mean 'doing anything with it'.

Hooters, the American “breastaurant”, known for its chicken wings and female waiting staff in skimpy nylon shorts and tight vests, is launching in the city centre of Newcastle upon Tyne.

“As a White Ribbon City, Newcastle stands against all harassment, abuse and violence against women and girls. All businesses in our city are encouraged to show their commitment to tackling these important issues and we will be raising it with the licence holder at these premises to ensure they understand our clear position.”

The "average" is more than likely a nonsense, too. Skewed by the few with lots of savings. Also, those without any savings, will also likely be in quite a bit of debt, be it a flash car, a loan or the credit card they do every weekly shop on.

Shindig

From my Ai.

"According to recent data, the average UK household savings were around **£9,633**, but this figure includes a wide range of individuals, from those with minimal savings to those with significant amounts.

However, the **median savings** (which is often a better indicator of typical savings, as it is less skewed by very high savers) was closer to **£2,160**. This suggests that while some people have substantial savings, many others have relatively little."

Pepe
10-02-2025, 10:03 PM
Does, say, money in stocks count as savings? Because if it is only what is in a savings or checking account, then I don't have much.

EDIT: A very quick check suggests that savings calculations usually do not account for investments. Why would anyone have more than a few thousand bucks just sitting there doing nothing?

Pepe

The problem with Hooters now is presumably that in the age of thirst traps and OnlyFans you can make a lot more money dressing skimpily in your own home than waiting tables in hot pants. I went to the San Diego Hooters, the highlight being my idiot mate being cut off on his endless wings order for sharing them (explicitly covered on the menu) then in a tantrum signing off the tip on his bill as 1 cent :D

The waitresses there were pretty but a lot of women in service jobs working in California would be 10s in the UK, everyone moves there to be a star after all.

Went to the Hooters Casino in Vegas and none of the women working there were particularly Hootery. Then we asked a taxi driver to take us to a strip club and he took us to a brothel with an ATM in the waiting room, we left and got into a dispute with another taxi driver.

This concludes my knuckle dragging essay on Hooters.

The teacher had requested a six-month leave of absence citing depression on 9 December but she returned to school just 20 days later after a doctor assessed her as being fit to work, the Daejeon education office said.

She did not have a relationship with the student, authorities said.

Days before the stabbing, the teacher had displayed violent behaviour, including putting another teacher in a headlock, they said.

The copper clearly made up his complaint and the prosecution summing up was a hilarious series of semantic back flips, where the KC basically went down the if you swap white with black route, then about faced saying that was obviously too simplistic a way to view things and that the concept of racism was bound up in more things than mere physical characteristics, but that the law was drafted so as to allow the idiot interpretation and so she should be convicted. It was clearly all a colossal waste of time from the outset and the outcome was manifestly obvious.

From the beeb:

It can now be reported that Ms Kerr's legal team attempted to get the case thrown out at a preliminary hearing, arguing there had been an abuse of process by crown prosecutors.

Ms Kerr's lawyer Grace Forbes said the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) had violated its own guidance, adding that a "loophole" in the victims' right of review scheme was used to justify prosecution proceedings a year after the alleged offence.

A scandalous waste of public money.

It could be argued that observing someone's ethnicity and stating it might not reach the threshold of racist harassment.

intended or likely to intimidate, offend or harm an individual

You could probably stretch that to fit by saying intending to offend, but then I guess you have to prove intent and she came up with a better account in testimony than PC rewrote his statement 11 months later to try and secure a costly and pointless trial. That's the thing with evidence, it gets judged as to its plausibility by the jury. It's hard work being a straight up PC Plod under cross examination, the CPS must have known they were going to have absolutely no chance once one who's motives you can legitimately question got up there. She was lucky enough to be able to afford expensive lawyers to defend her, of which you never see any come back on costs, a normal person would probably have been hung out to dry by a corrupt prosecution. I think if one were going to say which side was doing the more overt harassment it probably wasn't the drunk Aussie bint.

A warning has been issued to residents in a Lincolnshire village after a number of cats had patches of fur shaved off. Lincolnshire Police is receiving reports of cats returning to their homes in Pinchbeck, near Spalding with some of their fur missing, with a similar incident also reported in Kirton, near Boston.

The cats do not appear to be physically harmed and the shaven area appears to be small and caused by some form of hair clippers. It is not clear who is doing this or what the motivation is.

If anyone finds that something has happened to their cat, they should report it to the police immediately. An update was shared by South Holland Police to its Facebook page on Sunday, February 9. It states: "It has been brought to the attention of the Local Policing Team that some cats have been returning to owners addresses in the morning with parts of their fur having been shaven off.

"This appears to be in the Pinchbeck area. There has also been a case of this in Kirton near Boston. The motivation behind this is not known. The cats do not appear physically harmed and the shaven area appears to be small and caused by some form of hair clippers."

It continued: "Whilst not appearing physically harmed this behaviour will cause the cats anxiety and will have a lasting impact beyond the simple physical act." Regarding the incident, Inspector Matt Dickinson said "This behaviour is completely unacceptable. Whatever the motivation behind this it is not something that should be taking place.

"The cats in question are someone's pet, part of their family and not only will these actions cause anxiety to the animal they also cause worry to their owners. Anyone who is evidenced to be responsible for doing this will have robust action taken against them and where necessary be prosecuted for any criminal offences identified.

"This is not a bit of fun and needs to stop now" (https://www.lincolnshirelive.co.uk/news/local-news/police-tell-people-stop-shaving-9932044?utm_source=mynewsassistant.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=embedded_search_item_desktop).

Stuff like this also doesn't really move votes in the way one assumes. People vote for themselves.

Whilst I don't necessarily agree with this, I think the parallels to Jo Cox for example are limited, I do wonder how much having idiots like Vance parading their stupidity and lecturing is probably doing as much damage the other way for the like of AfD.

I feel there was a fair bit of understated push back against the Trump/Russia peace process and whilst there must be a degree of 'just hold on four 4 years and these idiots will fuck off' thinking there is also likely to be a distancing of traditional allies from Trumptopia.

Some 222 doctors who thought they had passed a key exam they sat nearly 18 months ago have now been informed they failed. Another 61 who believed they had failed have now been told they passed in what has been called a "life-altering" and "catastrophic" error.

This is a genuine disgrace. Heads should roll and big compensation should be paid. In reality nothing will happen and we'll continued to get our lives fucked up at the whims of these morons. The impact of this on people's lives and careers will have been enormous.

Big fuckup, obviously, but maybe they should have tried studying harder in the first place.

The ones who were told they'd failed when they actually passed are far worse in my opinion. They may (likely will) have missed out on higher speciality training jobs in order to resit, and competition ratios have continued to explode since 2023. Even if it only set them back a year, that's still a huge financial loss over the course of their careers, not to mention just the impact on their life. They'll have also paid out the exam fee to resit, paid for travel and accommodation to get to the exam in many cases, paid for revision materials; all when they'd already passed. Wasted their life revising for an exam they'd already passed. It's disgusting.

My completely ill-informed and archaic view would be that people who tend towards transgenderism probably don't like sport all that much so it isn't something to worry too much about at kid level.

It's also just a madly difficult thing to have a completely coherent opinion on when you get folk like Semenya.

Then it shouldn't be an issue either way, right? If they are banned from competing, who cares? There cannot be that many of them anyway, right? What about Semenya? Ban her, she is just one person, right?

All of kid sport is dominated by developmental difference to some extent.

And adult sport by genetics. If we go that route, the only logical conclusion is to have no categories at all. I think the traditional men/women divide is better, and I assume most women would agree. Agree, but with kids you also have age, which is quite an arbitrary one but we go with that, which is fine.

I have absolutely no problem with sports governing participation by sex at birth or whatever the era appropriate terminology is and I'm struggling to see how 'I don't give a fuck because this isn't actually a problem that exists' is being interpreted as some sort of extreme viewpoint in need of correcting, but there we are.

Perhaps a lot of it can be classed as unsurprising but I find little factoids like:

Children of first cousins have a third more primary care appointments than children whose parents are not related - an average of four instead of three a year.

Quite alarming.

Not so much for the disparity, but more the idea that on average every child in the country is going to the GP 3 times a year. Think my kids have probably had less than half a dozen trips to the doctor all in between the lot of them, whereas the average would suggest a number over 50 [it's actually 105]. I watched a video or read a piece about the Tour De France production and it was fascinating. Bores me to tears but my Dad (who also likes Cricket) loves it.

Not to take an instantly contrary position, but if the the tour is or was actually on the protected list we'd probably have to shut up shop as a country. I was more paying respect to ITV4 for largely making the thing a thing. Much like cricket, particularly overseas cricket, it will now go back to not being a thing.

I see the tour is set to come to Britain in 2027, yay. Britain though, so bound to be some provincial disaster zone rather than the south east where all the wanker cyclists are, sad times.

Yorkshire last time, so yeah.

As I said I find the whole thing insanely boring. I thought it always partly took place in the UK, mostly fueled by the fact that it went past my house when I was 6.

niko_cee

It is insanely dull for the most part, it's about the rolling countryside, the chateaux, the idle chit chat in the background to make the day roll by a little faster.

How did it come about I wonder, I remember watching it in the late 90's when it was still on Channel 4 but it seemed an odd fit then. No-one else really cared until Sir Bradley Wiggins invented cycling in 2008, was there a huge clamour from British audiences for more of Sean Yates or David Millar or was it some dire need for stuff to fill digital channels with?

niko_cee
28-02-2025, 11:47 PM
Full day coverage started on ITV4 pre-Wiggins I think. Mostly filling the day time schedule with cheap shite I would imagine. Literally no one gave a fuck about it.

2002 apparently.

Same reason for Golf and cricket. It’s nice to look at and good background noise.

Like those channels at Christmas that just show a log fire.

Disco

It was highlights for years before that though, for the seven of us who cared to watch. I suppose it was something quirky for C4 to show that nobody else gave a shit about and was therefore cheap as frites.

I really like cycling, but the Tour is only good for maybe 5, 6 stages. The rest is background, like niko said. Some races I can watch the full 4+ hours and actually be entertained.

Having just been on a nostalgic trip back through late 90's cycling I found this gem on the wiki page for Djamolidine Abdoujaparov:

In his last complete tour in 1996, Abdoujaparov achieved a mountain breakaway for his last stage win, unusual for a sprinter.

In 96 probably not that unusual actually, and he's done well to make it to 61 without his heart exploding.

I definitely must be missing something with cycling as a spectator sport, I just can't see what people are watching. People complain about NASCAR's going around in circles but cycling is just people going in what's like an infinite straight line.

There is a tactical element that you can start to enjoy the more you watch it although for long parts, it is just cycle very fast through an area.

It's like watching the London marathon, but with more tan lines and Eurochat.

I used to love the team names. Can still rattle them off from 'my' era, no doubt it's all Team Saudi and whatever now. Cofidis, Euskaltel-Euskadi, AG2R, Agritubel, Françaises des Jeux, Davitomon-Lotto, Rabobank. Who were the Belgian lot with Tom Boonen. Quickstep? Might be the same as one of the above.

I rather fear that these events and events elsewhere leave Mrs Merkel's legacy somewhat in tatters.

Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself. Maybe it was an AfD nut.

If there is a discrepancy a staff member will do a manual rescan of the whole trolley.

That'll go great.

Everyone should be resisting this shit anyway. They're coming for your jobs.

niko_cee
08-03-2025, 09:20 AM
Don't really see how those things cut jobs anyway, beyond being part of the self-scan thing, as they'll still need to approve you buying a pack a paracetamol or whatever.

Is that how they are going to replace rescans? Seems a catastrophically unlikely to succeed plan - how are the scales going to be accurate enough, down to the gram, when you are potentially loading 30 kilos of shit on there? How would they know you have scanned 10 packs of Flaked almonds [100g/£1.65] but put in 10 packs of pine nuts [100g/£3.90] into your trolley? Same weight dipshits, £22.50 of value to Antony Worrall Thompson.

Spikey M

I mean, they already have. When I worked at Tesco they'd have 20 odd tills open. They introduced 8 self scans (manned by 1 staff member) and cut that down to 10. These days there's maybe 2 tills open, if you're lucky. 3 staff members manning the 16 odd self scans.

This is obviously an attempt to cut staff further and I can only hope it's as devastating a failure as you think it will be.

Jimmy Floyd

You have to remember that in companies like Tesco, there are probably 35 people in head office whose job it is to identify cost savings.

Ironically it's their jobs which should be cut. CEOs are far too obsessed with costs and nowhere near interested enough in opportunities.

niko_cee

Are the people not on the tills now not just junking the shop up with their massive trolleys doing all the online shops?

Spikey M
08-03-2025, 10:46 AM
No, they already existed and it takes far less people for far less hours. My wife used to do it. It's a maximum of 12 hours a week and it's only a team of 10.

Giggles
08-03-2025, 10:48 AM
They must be on some fair tight deadlines because they'd mow you down if you're not watching out for them.

Spikey M
08-03-2025, 11:01 AM
Yeah, they normally work before the store opens, but when busy they continue after opening. Their "pick speed" target remains the same regardless, which is why they'd sooner mow Brenda down than stop and tell her where the crumpets are.

Jimmy Floyd
08-03-2025, 12:37 PM
I've noticed there are far more active shelf stackers than there used to be, basically every aisle has one going full time in the shops I go to. Presumably they've cut the overnight shifts doing that.

Tesco's staff numbers (https://www.statista.com/statistics/490882/tesco-group-united-kingdom-uk-number-of-employees/) and share price (https://www.google.com/finance/quote/TSCO:LON?sa=X&sqi=2&ved=2ahUKEwjsltv4wvqLAxWuSkEAHdw1LawQ3ecFegQIPhAf&window=MAX) have been pretty stable over the past 12 years. I'm sure there's more to it than that, but that doesn't immediately scream of a big shift towards automation or massive price gouging.

Decathlon do that, although I find their tills are pretty bad at getting the prices right, often making errors significantly in their favour if something has some sort of special price.
