Here for lunch today and it was a belter, proper meat lovers type place.

I had the Lamb chops with mash, leeks, oyster mushrooms, asparagus, spring onions and selection of sauces. Also got to try the chicken breast and some ribs.

Pork belly bao.

Venison, beetroot puree, potato fondant, roast beetroot, asparagus, blackberries, venison and port sauce.

https://i.imgur.com/kW0oHbn.jpg

Dark chocolate cremeux, mango jelly, chocolate sable, mango ice cream, passion fruit, passion fruit powder.

Starter and dessert I was really happy with. Both came out lovely.

The main needed work I thought. The recipes I used for both the puree and the sauce I thought seemed to have quite a lot of vinegar in, which came through at the end IMO (although nobody else seemed to notice). The venison itself was great though.

Pomegranates are a faff and unless pre-prepared are not to be bothered with. Chicken wings, are not a faff. The only slight inconvenience is pulling the chicken from between the bones.

Regardless of any conceived faff, the skin:meat ratio is at it's most perfect, and for that reason alone should be enough to convince anyone to put in a bit of graft.

Terre a Terre is good in Brighton, although it is a vegetarian gaff. Food for Friends too but same applies. But, you know, when in Rome and all that.

Otherwise, I don't know, that 62 degrees place is meant to be good (I think that's it's name) and there's a micro chain of places called the ginger x,y or z which is meant to be good (think it has something to do with masterchef).

I remember going to a Turkish/Persian place on Church Road in Hove a wile back which was decent.

The Chinese all flock to some fish and chip place called The Regency on the sea front, which, despite that billing, is meant to be good.

Casa Don Carlos is decent if you don't mind tapas places.

I like El Tico on the west coast. But maybe mostly for the vibe when it's sunny. The food is good and if you're there for an evening when it's warm and sunny I can imagine it's a pretty great place. I think they have loads of good places over there. I went to that Bohemia place years ago and thought it was really excellent, and comparatively bargainous for a starred joint. I think they have a few Michelin type places if that's your bag - they've defnitely had a few great british menu folk I think. Being the owner of multiple children most of the places I go to are't necessarily that great. The original crab shack in Gorey is decent, and there's another place there down by the harbour which I remember being good a few years ago. Offy's probably more your man though, even if he no longer lives there. I go over there most years, but tend to do the same things, none of which are particularly focused on food excellence.

Hierarchy of importance - Does it open at 5.30? Does it have a kids menu? Is is ostensibly decent?

Maybe I need a niko recommends tag.

Kikó
30-06-2019, 05:23 PM
Still relatively useful. I'm thinking Offy will sort out the ket.

The British menu one is called Samphire. £130 for their taster menu. 😨

niko_cee
30-06-2019, 05:29 PM
Yeah, things have changed and prices have aligned somewhat. When I did that Bohemia place it was c.£50 for 3 courses (with a few micro ones in between) when you'd have been looking at easily double that in London. Quality was equivalent.

There's also a cracking beach pizza place on, I think, Portlet beach. It's not necessarily the best pizza ever, but, again, the location on a good day is second to none.

Yes, the one in this (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rose-Elliots-New-Complete-Vegetarian/dp/0007325614/ref=asc_df_0007325614/) excellent book.

Here's (https://imgur.com/a/ehjEB71) a picture of it because I'm a good guy. I wasn't overly sold on the artichokes so you could leave them out, or just chop them up smallish if you put them in. I lobbed some runner beans in which were good. Chickpeas or beans are probably good in it. Don't skimp on the paprika.

I've had a thing called Käsewurst which was a sausage with cheese piped into it like a jam doughnut. Interesting, quite nice, but ultimately quite perverted.

It wasn't that. The cheese was just within the sausage meat. It would have been mixed in before going in the skin. It was at a Garden Centres 'Bavarian Christmas Market' so it may not actually be a thing outside of the place. It was good though.

Yeah, being outside in the sunshine makes it better, particularly with seafood. I think it's more of a lunch place. Didn't help I was camped inside irritatingly close to an extremely drunk couple (the woman complained when they took the salt crust away as she wanted to eat it) who were very 'chatty'.

Bitch also pulled what I thought was an extremely clever (and I would imagine highly infuriating trick for a waiter) whereby she complained that they'd taken her drink (margarita) away before she had finished it. It clearly has only dregs/ice or whatever in it but she was adamant and they had to comp her another one.

You order some food, which is supposed to come with fries. Your food comes and you get fucking sweet potato fries. One of the worst feelings in the world.

So you don't like being duped. The first few times I ever tried them was when restaurants would give them to me in fry form when i was expecting real fries and I felt pretty neutral about em. Then I went to a dinner where we were making a bunch of dishes and someone taught me how to make sweet potato fries. They were the best thing I'd ever had. Now I'll bake a sweet potato for fun and eat it with nearly every meal (when I'm living alone). Cut it open, lather it in butter and salt and chives. Oh baby.

Way healthier than pretty much anything else that's equally sweet.
