Ocon also back to his old habits I see.

Waffdon
26-05-2024, 01:15 PM
Alpine’s at it too :D

Gray Fox
26-05-2024, 01:15 PM
Half of the grids heads have gone here.

Ben
26-05-2024, 01:15 PM
Ocon ffs. :D

Adramelch
26-05-2024, 01:16 PM
Looking at the state of that barrier, I think we're in for quite the delay.

SincereTheRebel
26-05-2024, 01:16 PM
Gasly :D

That was nuts from Ocon.

Ruthless Aggression. Dont care if its his teammate.

Ben
26-05-2024, 01:17 PM
Kids hotels don’t do Sky Sports so I’m on my phone with 35% battery, this delay better not be too long.

Pepe
26-05-2024, 01:17 PM
Fuck, got the start time wrong by an hour.

Sir Andy Mahowry
26-05-2024, 01:20 PM
Fuck, got the start time wrong by an hour.

I almost did that too.

I was sure for most of the day that it was at 3pm UK time.

Gray Fox
26-05-2024, 01:22 PM
In the bigger picture, this is serious bad news for Red Bull. They already push the limit on cost cap, but their car has been caught up and that repair job will be in the millions. The money to use on upgrades just took a big hit.

Clunge
26-05-2024, 01:22 PM
Some seriously daft driving by a bunch of people there.

Waffdon
26-05-2024, 01:24 PM
Sainz can thank Magnusson for that. Fuck sake. Top 4 now not going to pit are they

SincereTheRebel
26-05-2024, 01:25 PM
Hard tyres until the end for all?

SincereTheRebel
26-05-2024, 01:26 PM
Magnusson my new favourite driver.

Sir Andy Mahowry
26-05-2024, 01:29 PM
They've just show that Checo looks and knows KMag is there.

That's naughty, he should have given him more room.

Gray Fox
26-05-2024, 01:30 PM
Perez not coming out of those replays with much credit.

Ben
26-05-2024, 01:33 PM
Agreed. Magnussen definitely at fault but Perez very naive. The “no further investigation” ruling fair enough I think, especially with it being lap 1 turn 1.

Adramelch
26-05-2024, 01:36 PM
Perez was also very very slow throughout. Got easily jumped by the Sauber and then both Haas cars were faster than him out of that corner.

Waffdon
26-05-2024, 01:36 PM
Hamilton fucking hates Merc. He’s getting more and more cynical at every passing opportunity

Waffdon
26-05-2024, 01:38 PM
Have they made a mistake because why is Sainz getting his place back but Danny Ric is behind Stroll?

Waffdon
26-05-2024, 01:46 PM
There’s not a chance Piastri doesn’t destroy his hard tyres before the end of the race. He can barley keep them going for 30 laps.

Probably going to get another red flag or safety anyway which will be interesting if it’s the latter

SincereTheRebel
26-05-2024, 01:50 PM
We need a yellow livery on the grid by default.

SincereTheRebel
26-05-2024, 01:59 PM
Ive always wondered. The people watching the race from the team garages for example. Carlos Sainz Snr. They have the Ferrari headsets on. Are they listening to the race commentary like us, or team radio?

Waffdon
26-05-2024, 02:00 PM
What are merc doing? Whats the point?

Should have stayed on hards at this point and hoped for another red

Sir Andy Mahowry
26-05-2024, 02:00 PM
Everyone just managing their tyres.

This is so fun.

Ben
26-05-2024, 02:02 PM
Hope we get a red or safety car. Fuck Mercedes here.

Gray Fox
26-05-2024, 02:04 PM
Tyre management formula has no place at Monaco.

They need some extreme degradation tyres for here really.

SincereTheRebel
26-05-2024, 02:06 PM

Indy 500 in a couple of hours, lads. Hold firm.

Ben
26-05-2024, 02:14 PM
James Vowles is great stuff on the pit wall. A million miles better than Szafnauer and Horner in previous years.

Gray Fox
26-05-2024, 02:15 PM
I miss Guenther already.

Waffdon
26-05-2024, 02:42 PM
These back markers just ruined any chance of a Norris pit stop in the next few laps

Sir Andy Mahowry
26-05-2024, 02:46 PM
Ocon sounds like he's on borrowed time.

Waffdon
26-05-2024, 02:50 PM
For fuck sake. Could have at least lost the tyre on the track

Sir Andy Mahowry
26-05-2024, 02:53 PM
This race has been so wank.

Monaco is just too shit with the modern cars.

You can't have these wide as fuck boats streaming round. There's no excitement bar the first lap.

Shindig
26-05-2024, 02:53 PM
Hamilton going for fastest lap, then.

Holy shit we have an overtake.

Sir Andy Mahowry
26-05-2024, 02:57 PM
Can't believe I'm saying this but Max might be the one who could make this race interesting near the end.

Max v both Mercs seems like the only decent fight.

SincereTheRebel
26-05-2024, 02:58 PM
Hamilton said " why didnt you tell me the outlap was critical". Outlaps and Inlaps are always critical :D

Sir Andy Mahowry

He's just pissing and moaning about everything to Merc now.

He doesn't give a shit.

Waffdon
26-05-2024, 03:03 PM
Just gamble McLaren. Do something

Probably missed their chance now

Sir Andy Mahowry
26-05-2024, 03:05 PM
Yeah it's gone for them now sadly.

Would have been nice if they gambled with one (Lando) but they bottled it.

Adramelch
26-05-2024, 03:08 PM
It wouldn't even have been much a gamble really.

Ben
26-05-2024, 03:09 PM
If Verstappen can’t pass Russell here then F1 has to do something radical. Street circuits are only becoming more common so they need to jettison these ridiculously large cars ASAP.

Shindig
26-05-2024, 03:12 PM
Nah, Monaco's the anomaly. The rest of the street circuits are wider.

Waffdon
26-05-2024, 03:13 PM
Russell won’t be far off the top 4 come the end of this race if this keeps up. Can’t believe they never used the free pit on Norris as it was 21 seconds at 1 point

Ben
26-05-2024, 03:16 PM
Nah, Monaco's the anomaly. The rest of the street circuits are wider.

It’s the metaphor involved. You’ve got the best driver in the best car with the better tyres and he catches at 3-4 seconds per lap then can’t do anything about it. Take away the artificial DRS and you have the same issue at a lot more circuits. Either you build 10 more circuits or reel the car sizes back 10 years. Three years ago you had Ross Brawn saying they’d look to eliminate DRS after a couple of seasons of the new regulations because they could race closer. What a fucking lol that is in hindsight.

Sir Andy Mahowry
26-05-2024, 03:24 PM
The best bits are when they cut to Charles' lass.

Waffdon
26-05-2024, 03:28 PM

4 different winners already this year. Happy days

SincereTheRebel
26-05-2024, 03:31 PM
What was the reason for bigger cars?

Adramelch
26-05-2024, 03:36 PM
Hybrid engines are typically bulkier and more floor means more downforce are the two main reasons if I had to guess.

phonics
26-05-2024, 03:37 PM
People complaining that Monaco is shit and SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE is just as much of a tradition of the sport than anything else in the whole formula un, deux or trois.

Ben
26-05-2024, 04:09 PM
What was the reason for bigger cars?

150kg of battery because they had to reel it back to 1.6L engines. That’s the problem.

Pepe
26-05-2024, 04:29 PM
People complaining that Monaco is shit and SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE is just as much of a tradition of the sport than anything else in the whole formula un, deux or trois.

Indeed. Monaco is a parade, has always been, and will always be.

Ben

It’s less the overtaking but the rampant tyre management that robs us of any sort of actual racing. The cars are so heavy that even one push lap ruins the rubber.

If so, some nice bank holiday viewing.

There has never been racing at Monaco in the 20 years you've been paying attention. Don't nostalgia post about it being better in your day. My grandad thought Monaco was a bad race when I was checking qualifying on Ceefax and he had a Nigel Mansell Portrait next to his wedding photo.

For those interested, I can't find the actual painting because it was binned when he died because my Nan hated it but it was pretty much this right next to the wedding photo.

For some reason I have a vibe that the sponsor was some cigarette company on the wing for the one Grandad had.

Hadn't they Rothmans for a good while?

Shindig
26-05-2024, 06:35 PM
Yeah, Rothmans got on the wing at some point. Mansell would've driven it during 1994/1995.

I’m not saying it’s a Monaco problem. It’s a problem on half the calendar now. Because of the cars.

Montreal next up which has the potential to be a bore fest too. Imagine saying that 10 years ago. Hybrid era has been good for a lot of things but it’s ruined the old circuits. The stats have been propped up by DRS but overtakes doesn’t always equal good racing.

Even if they were to give up the sustainability fraud, the possibility of massive fires is probably not worth it.

Indy's underway. Marcus Ericsson out on the first lap. :(

Newgarden wins. First back to back winner for 20 years. Pato O'Ward just misses out. That was fun.

Pepe
27-05-2024, 01:02 AM
The 500 was a good race. O'Ward bottled it by going too soon.

Indy is a good series but the cars are too ugly.

John Arne
27-05-2024, 01:22 AM
Why was Sainz allowed to return to 3rd, when he was clearly 20th when the red flag came out... Was it because the accident originally happened behind him?

Gray Fox
27-05-2024, 01:39 AM
With a red flag all positions are returned to the end of the previous lap. Given that this was the first lap they use the sector markers instead. All cars didnt clear the end of sector 1(basically at Mirabeau), so they had to revert to starting order.

John Arne
27-05-2024, 02:26 AM
Ohhh... cheers.

SincereTheRebel
27-05-2024, 06:35 AM
Thr tyres are too strong. You should not be able to do 70 laps on the medium yellow compound. The tyre should puncture and explode at 40% of that distance.

4 different rave winners so far though. Not quite 2012 when we had 7 from the first 7 but still. Progress.

SincereTheRebel
27-05-2024, 07:04 AM
Nevermind the hard whites.

Giggles
27-05-2024, 07:40 AM
They tyres should be made of whatever space age shit that they need to be to allow them to go flat out all the time and none of this managing crap. Still have one mandatory replacement.

SincereTheRebel
27-05-2024, 07:59 AM
Having to use all compounds during the race would be good. Do they have tyres over the weekend they have never used in this current format?

Driver % of their team's points:

Gray Fox

Paddock talk is that Perez is expected to re-sign with Red Bull through 2025. Bad news for Sainz, Tsunoda and Ricciardo. For the latter you'd suggest that's probably going to be the end of him in F1.

Sainz is apparently not being considered because he and Max did not get on in Toro Rosso. Big suggestion there that Max isn't listening to Toto flirting with him. That leaves Tsunoda who I feel is most hard done to here. Talent wise he should be getting that seat over Perez. He's probably at that point now where another team is likely his best option. Maybe a left-field choice in Mercedes?

phonics
29-05-2024, 10:36 PM
Tsunoda is the definition of 'Does not have it'

he'd make Gasly look like a success.

Pepe

Sainz to Mercedes should be a no brainer, no?

Ben
30-05-2024, 06:05 AM
I think the prevailing opinion is that Sainz to Audi when they enter in 2026 is a done deal, so a works team won't want to be dishing out one-year deals when it's not their choice.

Sir Andy Mahowry
04-06-2024, 09:50 PM
Or he just wants to drive the best car and Verstappen's not going anywhere.

Obviously Checo wants to drive the best car but why the fuck would Red Bull want Checo in it?

I can understand them not wanting Sainz as it could upset Max having someone that competent but surely there's some middle ground.

Shindig
04-06-2024, 10:07 PM
Checo is the middle ground. They don't need two drivers at the top of their game because one is so far ahead in quality. All he needs to do is pick up points finishes to make sure of the constructors title. 2026 might tighten the pack up but, at that stage, Perez is in his last year.

And I don't think someone being competent would upset Verstappen. If anything, having a rival might help his motivation. Red Bull is the party very averse to having two title contenders.

Pepe
04-06-2024, 10:34 PM
Horner just knows how much potential Perez has. World champion once they hire someone that can design a proper car.

I dont think Red Bull want to upset Max with Sainz. It is probably more to do with not having Sainz Snr and Max Snr in the same paddock

Adramelch
05-06-2024, 09:14 AM
Not sure what alternatives they have to be honest. As much as I like to lol at Perez, he's still a top half driver and you'd imagine everyone above him wouldn't want to play second fiddle to Max. Maybe Albon at a push, but he's committed to Williams already.

Jimmy Floyd
05-06-2024, 09:35 AM
The phrase 'safe pair of hands' comes to mind. Other than the real elite number one drivers, that's all these teams are really looking for.

Sir Andy Mahowry
05-06-2024, 09:44 AM
I think Monaco proved that his hands aren't all that safe.

Jimmy Floyd
05-06-2024, 09:47 AM
I mean they all launch it into the barriers occasionally, but when I say safe pair of hands I mean they're going to turn out consistent lap times that give meaningful data about the car, and don't get in the way of big dick up front. The opposite of that would be a steamhead like Tsunoda, not sure how he's lasted this long in the sport the way it is today, even though he's quick.

Adramelch
05-06-2024, 10:54 AM

Pepe
07-06-2024, 07:46 PM
The active aero ones? Will need more details on those, but I do not love them. Right now you need to compromise between good cornering but low straight speeds or the other way round. With the new active aero stuff, you no longer need to make that compromise.

Shindig
07-06-2024, 08:04 PM
Seems very gamey to me. And another thing for the drivers to fiddle with in the cockpit.

Pepe
07-06-2024, 08:05 PM
Will also be fun when someone forgets to switch to corner mode (or the system fails) and drives straight into a wall.

Ben

His main concern was how a car could potentially just suddenly get slower half way down a straight.

Pepe
07-06-2024, 08:14 PM
The opposite problem to what I describe. I guess we'll have to wait and see just how different the two settings are.

They should have just allowed real active aero. Allow teams to control their wings as they see fit whenever they want. That could be fun.

I hate how rain is policed in F1 these days. Yes, if it chucks it down in a race a la Canada 2011, intervene. But otherwise, let the drivers use the tools at their disposal and work their way up to driving at the limit of the conditions. Running in the rain during practice, qualifying and races these days is so limited, I'd say a lot of drivers who have joined the grid in the past decade have only had a fraction of the practice running in the rain that others have had which just perpetuates the problem. Even Massa, who would bin it in the rain every time without fail circa 2007/08, learned how to drive to the conditions.

Jimmy Floyd
08-06-2024, 07:47 AM
Wet running is such a big part of the history of the sport and is the time when the driver's skill is most at a premium, and when the good drivers separate themselves often regardless of machinery.

F1 clearly not interested in this and more interested in running the Safety World Championship.

SincereTheRebel
08-06-2024, 08:40 AM
Reason why Hamilton and Alonso immediately go towards the top of the time sheets during wet conditions.

For me, it seems like the inters are too good of a tyre. When the full wets are required, they red flag the race like a bunch of pussy farts

Gray Fox
08-06-2024, 09:28 AM
Wet tyre is far too good at what it's designed to do, which is chuck gallons of water off the floor up into the air so you can drive on the track. Unfortunately comes with the downside of spray everywhere and seriously reduced visibility.

Since we lost Jules Bianchi they've been terrified to go full racing on wet tyres in case something similar ever happened again. Even though that was a combination of sheer bad luck and Jules being a bit naughty.

Shindig
08-06-2024, 09:33 AM
Aye, people like to forget he was giving it full beans during yellows. Although he probably couldn't see a thing in that weather. Visibility must be a huge factor in them being flag happy.

As for the Norris-SC thing, my understanding is that you have to keep to a certain delta until you reach the SC which goes slower than that. So basically the other drivers got to drive faster than Norris for quite a bit there.

Essentially the reverse of what happened in Miami.
