Thank god / for fuck's sake (delete as applicable) football is BACK! The women are doing a World Cup, you're all banging on fucking endlessly about players you've never even watched play because some Twitter bore says your awful team might be signing him, Saudi are buying all the players and soon I'm going to have Manchester United back in my life (at least until we're sold to the baddies) whether I like it or not.

Rejoice!

I genuinely don't have a fucking clue how Leeds will do this season.

Players have left in their droves, which is fine because I wanted to see the back of them all anyway. But they've all left on loan deals instead of us getting a fee for them. We've only brought Ethan Ampadu and Karl Darlow in and we kick off in five days.

But then we have got some (on paper) sharp looking youngsters, have retained a lot of talent in terms of going forward on the wings (although we're still stuck with that lump Bamford as the main striker option) and have brought in about as good a manager as we could realistically have hoped for in the form of Farke.

So yeah, fuck knows. Magic, talk to me.

How the club responds to him being shit will be more interesting. If he wasn't so ace he would have been sacked the minute the story broke, so if he comes back crap the club can't just cut him loose because that will look too obvious, so they will have to keep him around or loan him to Southern European teams until his contract expires. That or just let him go for Mental Health reasons.

Isn't it more likely they'll end up in the wafer?

'mon the Brighton draw.

According to SOCCER TODAY or whatever:

KÍ is still a long way from the Champions League, but thanks to the extremely convoluted vagaries of UEFA’s myriad qualifying paths, the club from Klaksvik is already sure of a place in true European competition.

Teams that make it to the third qualifying round for the Champions League face two outcomes. Winners go through to the play-off round, which is the last step before being in the Champions League. Losers are sent to the Europa League’s play-off round, where bigger names like Ajax, Union Saint-Gilloise, and Aberdeen await. Victory there means a spot in the Europa League’s group stage, while defeat ends with a spot in the Conference League’s group stage.

I'm really surprised that an entity as corporate as Man U would risk the negative PR associated with fielding someone that everyone thinks is a rapist. Maybe his transfer value outweighs that on the books? I dunno.

I can't think of a precedent, certainly not in English football. Obviously players have been accused of rape before but in cases like Chris Ronaldo and van Persie there was no evidence and it was probably balls. In this case everyone's heard the recording so they know it's at least true in spirit even if clearly not at the level required for a conviction to happen.

John Arne

Ched Evans is probably the closest case. He returned to the game and seemed to reintegrate after a while, albeit out of the Barclays PREMIER LEAGUE spotlight.

Ched Evans was found not guilty on a retrial and managed to sue his lawyer out of a fuck load of money, so in many people's eyes there was a healthy dose of "innocence" there, something which Greenwood doesn't/won't have. He'll get slaughtered by all fans (possibly including his own).

Lofty

Gabriel Jesus knee injury keeps him out for first 6 weeks.

Not the same level as rape but my mate who was pro at Blackburn said there was a thief when he was there and they were going mental saying if the thief didn't own up they would be finished in football etc. Then they caught the thief and he was too talented/valuable, so he wasn't finished at all, in fact he went on to have a decent career.

So, are these new participation rules or whatever they are called going to be a harking back to the golden age rule adaptations [how many seconds were 'keepers allowed to hold the ball and what about that good old 'daylight' doozy?] where some teams get royally fucked early doors before they peter out of usage by late October, or is it going to be a season long clusterfuck of disciplinary bookings and the like when it turns out professional footballers are actually entirely unable to behave in an acceptable way towards officials?

Encouraging.

Unused sub in a close away game suggests to me a deal may not be far off.

My personal prediction is the bid Southampton actually want goes in, tomorrow or Sunday and it's done early next week. Then a deal for this Andre to join in January is done.
If that's as it settles I'm not too unhappy. We'd have sent three sicknotes and a 37 year old out and replaced them with two exciting players. Fewer bodies in the squad but better actual quality.
Same for if we swap Hendo and Fabinho for Lavia and another. The former was entering his bit part role phase of his career and while I think the latter would have come good, you can't turn down a decent offer like that when it's a gamble if he doesn't or not.

It would also have completely removed the age issue from midfield inside one window.

Jimmy Floyd

I've long come to the conclusion that footballers and more to the point fans need to abuse the officials at least as much, if not more so, than they need to see the ball kicked around in a pleasing manner. It's an outlet for everyman frustration.

Bad for sponsors of course who need clean cut nice guys advertising their products.

Andy
05-08-2023, 07:50 AM
Lavia will need a season at least before he's fit enough to be starting every week. We were lucky to get 90 minutes out of him in a normal 1 game week. I'm not sure if that's because we were protecting him or his age.

He should suit Klopps system perfectly though, surprises me that Liverpool didn't want to get the deal done ASAP and get him in for the fitness building part of pre season. We only seem to be around 10m apart which makes it even more strange.

Ward-Prowse I'm not surprised he's still on our books, wasn't great last season and has failed to step up over the last couple of years. Could probably do a job at mid table premier league side but I doubt any of them would pay the 40m or so we'd want and I think he'd rather stay with us for a season.

I read those stats as a team with little to no defensive capability somehow deciding to exacerbate that by throwing the entire side up the pitch and then being systematically picked off. 'Outclassed' sounds an apt description to summarise it.

It was mad tight on the goal line thing [you wonder why it didn't instawork, isn't it meant to?] and not helped by the fact that the illustrated ball had the variable colour pattern on it which makes it look like it's not actually entirely over the line.

Bollocks to that. Absolutely never a penalty and the mantra of 'any contact validates an onfield decision' is just as stupid as the 'any contact's a foul' theory implemented in VAR's first season.

VAR is obviously an absolute blight on the game, but if it is to persist then eliminating 'clever play' [ie backing in to someone then falling over] might be one of its few boons.

Ye I mentioned something similar a couple days back, but I could see the argument "how do we know they are Dinamo fans" being thrown about in that case. I say you just punish the whole association (however harsh it'll be for the other Croatian clubs) and be done with it. They'll never do it of course, but that's what needs to be done.

The other farce in the whole situation is that apparently Montenegrin authorities alerted the Greek ones a day prior, there also were calls from northern Greece talking about a convoy with Croatian plates and full of skinheads and yet nothing was done. They pretty much let it happen.

Haven't the last 6 between these two been draws, including 4 0-0s on the bounce? When was the last time Chelsea won this fixture? They must be due some sort of historic correction at some point. Hopefully not today.

They won in March 2021 at your place, 1-0.

I forgot we don't have Martin Tyler. What a joyous day.

This set up looks tragic. Why on earth is Chilwell at left mid/3rd centre mid and Colwill at left back.

Both those midfields are absolutely honking.

Mac Allister just wants to go forwards. A proper DM here and we'd wipe the floor with them.

Nice to see Chelsea still don't know how to defend.

All Mac and Szob that. Fab and Hendo would still be trying to get it past the halfway line as we speak.
