This was the United starting 11:

Radek Vitek

Marc Jurado

Teden Mengi

Jonny Evans

Alvaro Fernandez

Donny van de Beek

Scott McTominay

Hannibal Mejbri

Facundo Pellestri

Anthony Martial

Omari Forson

It's just getting some minutes to those who need fitness.

Add Enciso and Luke Shaw to the list of players with a decent length injury on the back of the American football pitches and/or meaningless air mileage. It can’t be a coincidence at this point

phonics
24-08-2023, 11:40 PM
While I do love the idea of blaming America for everything, could the fact that all these players have basically played pretty much non stop football with no longer than a 3-4 week break since COVID also be a factor.

Spikey M
25-08-2023, 06:45 AM
Yeah, this was brought up by the players when they decided to take away their non-World Cup / Euro's summer breaks, but everyone just said "AWWWW POOR BABY CAN'T COPE ON Ł56739483 PER WEEK! NONE OF THE REST OF US GET THE SUMMER OFF LADS. GO BE TEACHERS IF YOU WANT!" and lol'd them in to silence.

I think United will be forced to revert to a more traditional 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 before long. They have the two worst full-backs imaginable for any notions of having them tuck into midfield, because one has terrible positioning (and can often be lazy with it) and the other can't play football, and two creative midfielders isn't happening. If the new striker is a gun with a bit of pace they might even end up playing a sort of Ole Gunnar Binman style which would be pretty lol.

West Ham came with a plan and executed it well, aided by Webster getting a going over from Antonio. Felt a bit Potter era for 70 mins. Their 'keeper had a blinder though and on another day, and with a more favourable ref it could gave gone differently. Milner right back with two immobile centre halves and not much in midfield isn't something I want to be seeing every week. Gilmour had one of those games where you realise why he hasn't really kicked on from his occasional good performances. Goalies shouldn't be rotated. The Brighton one wasn't egregiously bad, but his positioning was too deep which led to most of the issues in the first half.

That penalty United got yesterday was a laugh. Rashford already on his way down 'anticipating' the [withdrawn] dangling leg before their thighs brushed. Rear angle doesn't allow you to see Rashford's point of take off (or the relative position of his feet) . Freeze at 2 seconds and he has decided to go down (his feet are essentially together and he doesn't look to take another step). Yes, there is 'contact' but if it isn't given on the pitch it isn't overturned (same as the Liverpool one) so all you end up with is the old status quo, but with offside lines.

Depends what qualifies as a big team these days. We got a point against City last season but shipped two quick goals in that game. Took four points off United and Chelsea. Six off Spurs (lol) and a point off Arsenal.

That's not bad but games like today (and last season's draws) show we need to close those games out. Or, y'know, turn draws against the likes of Palace into 3 points.

I like him. I went to the Benfica game at Anfield last year and I liked the look of him. I think his problem is he's an instinctive striker, give him time to think and his deficiencies really do show up. He'd be excellent at a mid-table club with space to run in behind. He can run all day, he's strong and he can finish when he doesn't have time to think about it. To me he's like a better version of Djibril Cisse no technical ability whatsoever but he can be a useful player I just don't know if it can be a top striker at a club who wants to push towards the top of the league.

The midfield upgrade is so ridiculous it's actually made me see not only the madness Klopp pulled by winning all that shit previously, not only VVD's levels in holding that shit together back then, but, and more importantly, Gomez/Matip/Quansah/Yahmum will be more than enough at CB, the spotlight was on them heavily due to the midfield's inability to keep possession but with those 2 fucks either side of Tsubasa, it's over lads and Pep knows it.

As a neutral watching that, it was Newcastle vs Newcastle out there. They had a great start but the hoodoo of not beating Liverpool in so long apparently took hold as they didn't really do luch after the red card. TAA was lucky not to get sent off, no complaint for the VVD one. I did think it seemed like Newcastle's final balls were a lot more wayward than usual, especially for a team that battered Villa a few weeks back.

Fair play to Liverpool for taking heart from the state of the game, I think Newcastle's triple sub was a mistake in terms of quality drop off and so it came to pass. I think any other 'Top 6' would have battered Liverpool out of the game by half time in those circumstances though, Klopp sent to the stands for crying etc etc.

Obviously a result to celebrate for Liverpool fans but I'd be worried half of their first choice defence got merked by Anthony Gordon if I was them.

Not sending off Alexander-Arnold was a two wrongs make a right situation, he shouldn't have been booked for being pushed over and then throwing the ball about 3 yards, but he should have been for blocking Gordon's run.

Van Dijk's was a weird one. I can understand why it is a red, but it seem such a nothing/soft decision. Another one of those ones that could easily not even be a foul elsewhere on the pitch [even if that would be wrong].

Liverpool have been pretty lucky to escape playing over 90 minutes of their last two games a man down after somewhat unfortunate decisions.

City would have taken them to the cleaners, but the rest of the 'top 6' [whoever they are] not so much.

Penalty.

It was a clear foul nonetheless and a red as a result of that. Not sure what your argument is there.

Gray Fox
28-08-2023, 05:15 PM
I think the confusion over the VVD red has come from it not being a horror tackle or elbow or something of that nature. It is an unlucky one that he just mistimes and kicks through the player a split second before the ball.

Further up the pitch it's a foul and probably not a yellow, but as it is, Isak is in the box having a shot, so any kind of foul is one stopping a goalscoring opportunity. Once VAR cleared up that he got player first, then the ref can only give a red card there.

niko_cee
28-08-2023, 06:11 PM
I don't think anyone is confused. I just said it was weird as, at first glance there didn't look to be much to it and it looked like he got the ball. Subsequent analysis then validates what happened, but I don't think it is a stretch, or hyberbolic indulgence, to say it was slightly unfortunate and looked a little innocuous at first. Saying it wasn't a goalscoring opportunity is obviously playing a bit fast and loose with reality.

Going to definitely do everything I can to see us in Munich.

I lolled at Southgate's rabbit-in-headlights response to the gay question in his press conference. These people are happy to wave the moral flag for easy PR and then when push comes to shove they are just completely in hoc to Taz and the mullahs.

If I were him I'd be keeping a list of how much Arab investment each of the Mainstram Media organisations has.

"Sorry, Mr Richard Jolly of the Independent... INDEPENDENT? Is that apart from the 30% Sultan Muhammad Abuljadayel owns?" *unbuttons waistcoat*

Take it to the cunts.

A group stage match against PSV? It feels like it's been 10 years but everything stays exactly the same. Swap out Lens for Olympiakos and you could have me convinced I've stepped through a warp in the time continuum.

When I lived in London circa 2008-12 you could barely go into central London on a midweek afternoon without seeing the Olympiakos squad hanging out in Leicester Square before their game against Arsenal/Chelsea/Spurs. Swear I saw them at least 4 times.

Didn't Arsenal lose to PSV in the Europa League 2 years ago? Glamour fixture.
