But for the purposes of my point, them being united by someone with nefarious motives (not hard to do I'd imagine given how easily a lot of them are manipulated) it would be bad.

What are we even discussing? How does this always happen?

Because it’s the internet and I’m bored. My thing was just calling Pepe, giggles and spikey weirdos and RL wrong. Then I said something about your fawlty towers post, retracted it and you kept going so now we’re here.

Welcome to 2012/13. Glad you could join us.

What happened to 2014? And I suspect society would be a much nicer place if this stopped. Judging people by their actions rather than the colour of their carnation (or the colour you think it is) would be much less antagonistic.

Because I rethought about it and considered it slightly earlier afterwards.

Less antagonistic? Yevrah, 10 years ago members of this forum were finding out people’s landline number calling it to tell them they were going to die tomorrow and delivering pizzas saying ‘I know where you live’. Henry a BT salesman in Ireland made it his life’s work to threaten two children from St. Helens for playing football in their back garden and giving it a name. This is the internet. Less antagonistic? Why don’t you just redact it all like Fawlty Towers.

How am I a weirdo? I did not say they should be run over. I merely pointed out that in this little altercation, people tend to side with the protestors, while if some ethnics were blocking the road to do donuts, people would side with the milf, despite both cases involving a handful of morons disrupting everyone just so they can have their shitty activity.

Lewis

2) These protests have to be be approved weeks in advance. Listen to the traffic updates or use waze if your life’s important enough to murder someone else over.

You get approval for things like 'March for x', which are advertised and policed. These are just random, and wouldn't be approved because it's illegal to block highways, hence the arrests.

People who have politics as their hobby are often weirdos and always insufferable. Whether they support Real Left of FC Right doesn't really make a difference.

I've always liked this great quote about Star Wars nerds (https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/1192222-a-lot-of-fans-are-basically-fans-of-fandom-itself) as a political explainer. The recent party conferences just looked like AA meetings for spastics.

Spikey M
28-10-2021, 07:35 AM
Sort of. If Generation Instagram weren't spending £12 grand a year on holidays and city breaks they'd be able to save up for the deposit easy enough.

It's not as easy as it was for Generations past (not by a long shot), but it is doable if you just save your money rather than spunking it up the wall.

If you'd rather have the holidays than 10 years of saving, then that's cool but that's a conscious choice that's being made, getting on the property ladder is not "unaffordable".

Jimmy Floyd
28-10-2021, 07:58 AM

My anecdotal experience for those buying in London (which isn't the whole of the UK) was you either had to have a parent die, have very wealthy parents, move into help-to-buy or a shared ownership property. The latter two usually ending up out in east London somewhere.

More of my manc friends have been able to buy but one mate for example was able to buy a two bed terrace in Denton (not a great area) for £60k. Which is a deposit in London.

My mate just bought a house having lived with his parents until he was 28 and genuinely seemed baffled as to why I hadn't just bought one.

He'd worked in some of the same shit jobs as me and knew I rented but hadn't put that together. It's fine, it just shows that we all don't really think other people's situations through.

What defines early doors for you? I was unemployed for 5 years coming out of college. Now I'm looking at my pension thinking, "Aye, I could shave a few years off my sentence." Although I never really had debts to deal with as I stayed with the parents until I found work. And the wasted time always had me thinking about making up for it. Plus I had parents who grafted and saved. I always thought they were skint. :D

I think that's the main issue. You learn nothing of fiscal responsibility at school. Coming up, I saw plenty of young'ns drop their pension contributions because that's tomorrow's problem or it's for old people. I'd rather plan for a future I might not live to see, just in case I do.

:D I was mostly Kiko baiting in my first post, although there is some truth to it. Alot of the people moaning they're stuck at home with their parents in their 30's COULD have been saving to buy a flat.

It's shit that it takes 10 years of solid saving to buy a shoebox above a chipshop, but that's where we are and it isn't going to change so you have to play the game.

Of course smug boomers like Judith can fuck off, considering she presumably bought the 5 bed house she lives in (with 4 unused bedrooms, no doubt) for about 20 grand, and she should keep it shut.

Ian

Well I didn't get a job that actually allowed me to save much until I was 30-odd what with rent and everything and obviously with the shit jobs comes debt in the event anything expensive comes up (not holidays, I didn't fork out for one myself until I was in my 30s) you need to find the money somewhere so you go credit cards, etc. I have an alright job now but live in my overdraft to pay off debt and then can hopefully at some point start saving for a house.

I think that's the main issue. You learn nothing of fiscal responsibility at school. Coming up, I saw plenty of young'ns drop their pension contributions because that's tomorrow's problem or it's for old people.

I read a thing once that said a study shows that when the human brain thinks of itself in the future it behaves the exact same way as it does when thinking of another person, not the way it does when you think of yourself in the present. If that thing I read is correct (or I haven't misunderstood it because I'm an idiot) a lot of folk are pretty much wired to go "lol fuck that guy" half the time. Luckily my last few jobs they basically tell you some of your salary's going toward a pension.

This is the bracket of people I really feel for. If you have to rent then saving for a deposit is going to be really fucking tough. Not least because the rent is more than the equivalent mortgage would be. Is moving in with the parents for a bit not an option? Or is - as I presume to be the case - a cycle of rent and debt preferable to doing so?

I've been staying at my parents for the last month (see the Big C thread) and honestly I'd rather be poor (relatively, I know I'm not ACTUALLY poor) than do it long-term. It's driven me up the wall. I can't even imagine the state I'd be in if I subjected myself to it for a year or whatever.

I spend money that I don't strictly NEED to but as with the moving-in-with-my-parents thing you have to make a choice sometimes between small things that help you get through the week (a takeaway, a meal out with friends, some overpriced beers for wankers) or spending as little as you can get away with to speed up the process and, again, I accept that that is a decision I'm making.

But it doesn't alter that even for people in similar but slightly easier/better circumstances than mine it's still an absolute pig to save and get the house if your every thought is "Do I NEED to spend this?"

The HOUSING CRISIS is largely a South East thing, and over the lifetime of the mortgage you probably pay less than you used to on genuine interest rates, but I wonder what extent the proliferation of university education has done to housing prospects. Not so much in terms of the debt ('debt'), but 1) you spend three years making no money whatsoever at a time when our parents were still living at home and saving [from the jobs they got straight out of school with no proper application process]; and 2) if Portsmouth if anything to go by, half the inner housing stock has been turned into student share houses for the twenty-odd per cent population increase that wouldn't otherwise live here.

London housing though lmao. I look at jobs there and short of almost doubling my money nah mate.

I managed to save about £5,000 in 9 months working in a fairly basic admin job in...2015, I think. Then I moved to Edinburgh, went mental, and came home in 2016 with £4,000 of credit card debt. This is pre-coke as well. If I'd not done the latter and just kept doing that data entry thing I could easily have been in my own 2 bed flat or something by now, but I would have probably ended up fucking my life up one way or the other anyway so it isn't worth dwelling on too much.

Spikey M

I do wonder if renting should be as taboo as it often is. Or rather, if owning should be seen as the big "completed it m8". Obviously Landlords can be cunts, but there are alot of benefits to renting too.

Starting with... well... the benefits. If you lose your job, the government will cover your rent for you. If you have a mortgage, it's up to the Big Bad Bankers, who may or may not give you a mortgage holiday.

If you spring a leak or the boiler goes pop, the landlord has to get their wallet out, rather than you having to have a tearful conversation with the Insurance companies that never pay out for anything.

Shindig
28-10-2021, 06:07 PM
Yeah, having that kind of cover in an emergency is great. I've yet to have a bad landlord. Having a place truly my own would be great but buying comes with it's own risks. You could inherit a shithole or, ten years down the line a council's modernisation plan could result in your home being demolished. The only obligation you have as a tenant is to keep the place clean.

Giggles

Well on the one hand there's that, on the other there's when your landlord should just properly fix something and they do the bare, cheap minimum so they don't. My boiler's been due a replacement for at least three years, they send a fella out to fix it, he says "Yeah this really needs replacing, I'll stick that in my report", they presumably go "lol nah" and then it breaks again in about four months.

EDIT: Out the way Spikey.

I had the very same one for years with the gas burner. The last time some plumber came out and said it was unsafe and badly needed replacing. Heard nothing for about a week before some handyman sort of lad was sent out to replace something and get it going. Id say they still haven’t done it.

Mr. Bae was not in attendance, but at one point nearly the entire restaurant erupted in some sort of spontaneous dance when they turned up the music. Kind of like a shit flashmob, with bimbos waving table napkins. I assume this is done once per seating. I continued to eat my steak.

Cruise holidays. Would you recommend them to a friend (who lives jusy across the water from you)?

Pre-pandemic, yeah. Not so sure now as they're being particularly strict on testing etc, and getting stuck in a tiny cabin for 2 weeks after testing positive would be even more miserable than on a normal holiday.

Once all this bollocks finally fucks off though, go for it. It's great. Although I'd only do a fly-cruise, otherwise you end up with a load of sea-days getting to the Caribbean or wherever. With a Fly-Cruise you get to explore a new place every day. I think we did Barbados, Antigua, St Vincent, St Kitts, St Lucia, St Maarten and Tortola.

It wasn't too bad as the waters there are pretty calm. We had one rough night going past Puerto Rico where drinking in the bar at the top of the ship proved to be too much for a few stomachs, but otherwise it was smooth enough.

I think it's more of a problem with Mediterranean cruises, especially if you have to go past the Bay of Biscay, which looks fun. Think even my stomach would give out.

I think loose fitting trousers are cutting edge of fashion in London. The more of the underpants on show, the better.

Universities jumped the shark long, long ago. You MUST NOT say anything that could be offensive, even if only doing so to show that it is offensive.
I got into war with the feminist society at Sussex in 2013 and survived. I was the original 'can't be cancelled'.

So some historian did a Hitler impression at a Cambridge Union debate about Good Taste... he did the impression to prove that bad taste exists.

They have now blacklisted him.

The fuck is wrong with these people?

Well by banning him they've confirmed he unequivocally won the debate

What awareness of homelessness needs to be raised exactly? Is there anyone living in this county who isn't aware of people being homeless and how utterly horrible it must be?

Charities who focus on "awareness" should be disbanded and all their assets seized, the fucking wasters.

There are alot of people (probably most) that don't realise how widespread it is. Alot of people just think it's the people sat on sleeping bags in the highstreet. Druggies and Alcoholics.

The "housing crisis" is absolutely mental. There are families living in cars, sleeping on floors in friends houses and - if they're really lucky - staying in "temporary housing", which usually means bumping around properties like this (https://news.sky.com/story/under-siege-housing-scheme-blamed-for-turning-a-quiet-suburb-into-open-prison-12321472).

Awareness and action is desperately needed. Burnley wearing the wrong colour at home probably isn't going to cut it.

They'd have to organise an applause or something just to hammer it home. Or get the homeless charities to set up shop at grounds as well. Homelessness isn't really a problem you can solve but you can make it slightly less shit.

Spikey M

It's not a problem you can solve but it's a problem we could reduce by about 99% fairly easily. But homelessness keeps housing prices going up so here we are.

Par for the times we live in. We care deeply about things for about 2 weeks, then if it isn't solved we move on.

Homelessness only stays on my radar because I talk to people that have suffered it more or less every day at work so it's easy for me to keep caring.

The vast majority of them are evicted by private landlords (sometimes their own fault, sometimes not), can't find anywhere else (alot of landlords refuse benefit claimants) and end up on the council waiting list which can take years.

It's usually single parents with no support, for who getting a full-time job is impossible.

The planning system strikes again. I think people also conflate those types of people with tramps, many of whom would find a way to fuck a house up and be homeless within weeks of giving them one, which makes it harder to 'solve' from a spending money on them perspective.

Easy, my dad squatted one in Brixton years ago. Even started making improvements. Had to laugh when he bemoaned some Serbians squatting it in his absence.
