Just watched the first 2 episodes of the Netflix Aaron Hernandez documentary, the guy was (obviously) messed up and there's a lot in it that I didn't know at the time.
I know that following his suicide he was diagnosed with CTE but I wouldn't have been surprised if he had done most of it even if he hadn't suffered from brain trauma.
Just finished it.
He was clearly a sociopath.
Also, I think guilty of Odin Lloyd and not guilty for the double Boston homicide was right although he was definitely in the car when the Boston killings occurred and knew the shooter (more than likely Bradley).
In the most surprising underclassmen decision of the bunch, Travis Etienne has decided to go back to school.
LSU have also lost ANOTHER player, with TE Thaddeus Moss (son of Randy) declaring. Still not seen anything for sure on Chaisson.

I look forward to lots of clapping on the sideline regardless of the score.

I think he'll do alright.
He seems the type that is better suited as a OC rather than a head coach.

Moss had a big game in the Natty so no reason to go back. Particularly if he doesn’t think LSU will be as good without burrow and friends.
How’s the rb class looking? Taylor, swift, Edwards Elaire, najae Harris, who else?
Just googled this myself. Harris is going back too but forgot about jk dobbins.

Taylor, Dobbins & Swift are the three who could find their way into R1, and Edwards-Helaire would probably be the next one off most boards, but then you also have guys like Eno Benjamin, Anthony McFarland, Zack Moss & Cam Akers who could all go day two. Day three should see DeeJay Dallas & Lamical Perine go fairly early (I like both of these two as guys who could be productive three down players at a low cost), with lots of depth at the end in Xavier Jones, Rodney Smith, Benny LeMay, Reggie Corbin & a bunch of other guys.
Having said that, Najee, Etienne, Kylin Hill & Chuba Hubbard is a fantastic start to the 2021 class
Shrine Game is tonight, with the Senior Bowl starting next week. Doesn’t sound like the greatest crop of players for Shrine, but no doubt there will still end up being some starters in there somewhere.

Simmons leaving Clemson now too.
Going to look forward to reading the “big boards”. Should be an interesting draft this year. Three qbs who should go round 1, a few others in the mix and a few outstanding prospects elsewhere ie chase young, the wideout class and Delpit.

I don’t get the Tyreek Hill thing. You wouldn’t have to turn over too many stones to find a domestic abuse case in the NFL but he’s the only one cops any flak for it. Others like Adrian Peterson are lauded from all corners and he’s a child abuser. Ahman Green is on every list of greatest modern Packers and his favourite hobby was knocking women about. It’s a long list.

He isn't really. Juszczyk is the one doing the bullying, Mostert is just bombing through all the massive gaps.
Why are the Packers sticking with the same two passing setups, even when the Niners are dropping the disguise and very obviously going straight after Rodgers in numbers.

The Packers don’t have anything else. They haven’t all season.
Gray Fox

Death by a thousand runs for the Packers then.
Bit of a shame for it to fizzle out like that as you'd think that may have been Rodgers' last chance.
It took me a minute for Jimmy G's statline to register when I looked at it this morning, but I did like SI describing his performance as the "world’s most handsome handoff machine."
Okay, I decided I'd start giving some of the 2020 draft prospects a bit more of a look, as I'd barely watched any of them. MAN DO I LOVE JEFFREY OKUDAH (CB, Ohio State). Him & Derrick Brown (DT, Auburn) might be my two favourite players in the class.
Also, AJ Epenesa (EDGE, Iowa) is a big, strong boy, Isaiah Simmons (Clemson) is the Taysom Hill of defence, and Jedrick Wills (OT, Alabama) just did not give a fuck about anyone trying to pass rush against him.
Planning on doing CeeDee Lamb (WR, Oklahoma), Henry Ruggs (WR on x1.25 speed, Alabama) & K'Lavon Chaisson (EDGE, LSU) next, as they're the three highest rated players I've not got to properly yet.
Oh, and I have a fourth round grade on a punter & a fifth on a kicker
Is there a reason you go to all this effort for 'grading' players and whatnot other than because you enjoy it?
Not that that's not reason enough, I'm just curious.
Giggles
21-01-2020, 07:51 AM
Someone from this side of the atlantic just watching TV broadcasts or Youtube compilations can't really 'grade' anyone (unless it's just using an amalgamation of data from loads of real scouting websites as your own) but we all need a hobby in fairness. They're all shit until they prove it for a few seasons in the NFL anyway.
Oh yeah, I’m absolutely nowhere near knowledgeable enough to even know what I’m actually looking for & stuff, and when I say grading what I basically mean is ‘watch a few cutups & think of a couple of numbers out of 10 that feel about right, plug them into an excel document & assign round grade to certain ranges kinda randomly’.
I like data & spreadsheets, and I always get nerdy about the draft, so it’s fun to get a look at some of the guys before they come out & maybe slowly learn something about what I’m actually looking at in the process.
The packers looked a bit off didn’t they.
Get the feeling they’ve basically taken a punt that one of their receivers will eventually turn really good to compliment Adams.
Kurmerow, M V-S and Allison.
Not really happened though, so could see them praying someone like ruggs or Higgins drops to them.
Giggles
21-01-2020, 09:19 PM
There’s a big gap from Adams to Lazard and then about double that gap back to the rest (not sure why they even signed Ryan Grant). They desperately need 2 or 3 receivers and a TE. Criminal that Jimmy Graham is the highest paid in the league.
There’s some big holes on defence too though, so the draft isn’t going to fix all their problems - ILB in a huge way, D-line help, and someone to drop Kevin Kind down the depth chart a bit. Need to start thinking about a QB in the first 3 rounds very soon too.
Giggles
21-01-2020, 09:47 PM
I like this. So much better than the waste of time that is an onside kick.
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001098234/article/nfl-to-test-out-two-potential-rule-changes-in-pro-bowl
After a successful field goal or extra point try attempt, the scoring team will have options with no kickoff.
The scoring team, Team A, will have the following options:
1. Team A may elect to give Team B the ball at Team B's 25-yard line, beginning a new series of downs with a first-and-10.
2. Team A may elect to take the ball at its own 25-yard line for a fourth-and-15 play. If Team A is successful in making a first down, Team A will maintain possession and a new series of downs will continue as normal. If Team A is unsuccessful in making a first down, the result will be a turnover on downs and Team B will take possession at the dead-ball spot.
Gray Fox
21-01-2020, 10:04 PM
A positive step I guess. 4th and 15 isn't going to be made too often either. Though a successful onside kick gives you possession near the 50, almost guarantees at least a FG attempt.

Need to do something anyway. Recent changes have made the onside basically pointless.
Removing any special teams in favour of offense and defense is a good move for me.
Clearly feeling the pressure from XFL.
I’d like to see 4th & 10 from the 35, rather than 4th & 15 from the 25, but it’s a decent start I guess.
phonics
22-01-2020, 11:59 AM
My limited experience of watching 4 games did make it seem pretty pointless that they spend 5 minutes getting a serperate team on and then some guy kicks it into the oppositions touchdown area and then the actual game starts again.
That '5 minutes' won't change even if they did bin special teams for other things because a lot of a given delay is so that they can advertise. The NFL has zero interest in making a game take less time to play. They'll just find other pointless stuff to do instead.

Baseball is very repetitive though whilst American football is a bit more random and wild (read:violent).
I don’t think the nfl cares how long the game takes if it’s 3-4 hour range. People will watch and if it’s a blowout they leave.

Plus there’s the stadium tour, Packers hall of fame, etc. It’s Lambeau.
Gray Fox

It is odd. Considering one team is supposed to be the home team too. One of the games at Wembley this year had the support all the other way around too. Got to be frustrating for the players.
When they had one at Twickenham we were sat next to a couple who had season tickets for Twickenham itself. They'd never seen a snap before but came along as their ticket is already bought. They left after the 1st quarter.
If you don't take it too seriously it's great, but there's obviously no comparison to going out there. Especially to somewhere like Lambeau.
Yeah of you take it as a fun day out with some gridiron then it's good bit it's not like going to actually see your team in their stadium.
Couple of times I've been we've been sat in amongst some good people and it's been fun.

Yeah, this is the issue I have - the BBC coverage is reliable, and looks to be about 15-20 seconds ahead of where GamePass has come back, but then every break you get the BBC NFL squad & Mike explaining what play action is, and I'd rather watch the adverts.
Mahomes is so good that Jimmy Ward hit him & hurt himself.

Mahomes would have pitched it had Tartt tried to tackle him but he should have hit him.

Am I being harsh in feeling like the Niners flubbed it a bit here? The Chiefs are obviously good and Williams has had his reward for doing a lot of dirty work through the first few quarters but San Francisco have taken their boot of the Chiefs' neck here.
Browning
03-02-2020, 03:13 AM
Jimmy bottled it hard even before the Sanders over throw, the two plays before both should have been picked.
But when you put a sorry CB on any Chiefs WR that’s the result you’re gonna get.

Niners bottled that the drive after the Chiefs scored to make it 20-17. Got 5 yards on a run then tried to pass it twice, killed only about 40 seconds and gave the Chiefs field position.
Shanahan on BINMAN WATCH.
Still after all that, Jimmy had Sanders open for a TD and then blew it. Then he just tried to get it down the field too quickly. Should have taken it in 10 yard plays out of bounds.
Sir Andy Mahowry
03-02-2020, 03:37 AM
Jimmy didn't know what to do with the pressure. He had no feel for it at all for the entire game. He just wanted to stand in the pocket and wanted more time than the pass rush was allowing him.
Chiefs weren't disguising their blitzes you could see they were coming and from which side. No adjustments were made and he would just wait to be swallowed up.
Oh and Damien Williams was robbed.

Delighted for Kyle Shanahan reinforcing his bottler tag though. He’s one media wankfest they can shut down for a while.
That was so much better than last year.
Hadn’t realised Sammy Watkins was on such an enormous contract in kc but hey, they’ve built a great offence.
49ers offence just stalled entirely in the fourth quarter. Not like the 49ers defence played badly, giving up 31 to the chiefs isn’t actually that bad. But no chance you’re winning that game with 20 points of your own. 28-30 point minimum to have a shot and it just didn’t happen.
Garapollos stats in the playoffs must be some of the statistical poorest of all time.
Giggles
03-02-2020, 10:51 AM
I know it’s the done thing for the winning QB to get it but it must have been fairly low on quality overall if Mahomes got the MVP throwing two interceptions. The first of which was one of the worst throws I’ve ever seen.
It was just desperation for everything to be down to Mahomes, from that to the commentary.
It should have been Williams.
Not sure what the logic is in just voluntarily surrendering a 2min drill against the chiefs but okay.
This is where Shanahan started to let it slip away. He got too conservative & they let KC get back into it, and when they hit that long completion to Tyreek on third down you could see how this was going to end up. Jimmy G melting in the fourth quarter didn't help either.
Oh, and I'd have gone Sammy Watkins for MVP, probably.

Perhaps you're trying too hard to do so. Both of the TD drives that put Kansas City ahead were entirely Mahomes. Once they stopped them on downs on the next drive they were simply going to hand it off to try to get the first down and subsequently run out the clock, in which Williams added 2 carries and 42 yards to his total.
Basically, when the game was on the line Williams went 15/62 yards and the Chiefs offense couldn't get anything going until they basically abandoned the running game for Mahomes lead touchdown drives, only running Williams once for two yards over those 16 plays.

Sure he didn't play lights out by any stretch but Mahomes was literally the catalyst for all 3 of KC's important TD drives and Williams, while he certainly contributed, did so mostly in the most inconsequential series of the game considering the 49ers were defeated and praying they could keep KC from gaining 10 yards.

Damien Williams should still be winning the MVP for me. Over 130 yards and 2 TDs in the Superbowl is a top stat line, and then you consider he put up the lead-taking TD stretching it over the line as he goes out of bounds (although I question whether it was actually in, but that's another question). First half he was a key part of them getting 10-3 up too, KC kept it on the ground and he was getting good yardage on most of the attempts.
The only reason that KC found themselves 10 down were the two awful picks that Mahomes threw. Yes he made a few nice plays in the comeback drives but it's not enough to be an MVP when you've almost thrown the game away and your defence has bailed you out in the 4th.
I'd also put Chris Jones forward for MVP contention for the sheer number of pressures he applied to Jimmy G, but defensive players are sorely overlooked in the MVP discussion.

But you're saying Williams does quite literally because he stretched his arm out on 5 yard pass after Mahomes drove them down to the 5 himself?

But you're saying Williams does quite literally because he stretched his arm out on 5 yard pass after Mahomes drove them down to the 5 himself?
I'm saying that's a key play in a 130 yard, 2 TD day for Williams, one of the biggest plays of the whole Superbowl. He didn't make a play that caused further problems for KC, whereas Mahomes did.

Was a great game. Kinda wanted san fran to win cus I've the classic dickhead instinct towards internal backlash against hero worship of sporting superstars, so even though mahomes is clearly class I just can't warm to his ilk. Didnt get the same sense of outright dread and anger I got/get when 90s man utd/Patriots come back though, and on balance I thought yeah fair play.
I love a party pooper but chiefs probably deserved it, san Fran also have nobody to blame but themselves. Sorta like the American football equivalent of a team sitting deeper and deeper holding on to a 1-0 lead and you just know they're gonna concede.

KC
What was the deal with them continually getting to within a yard of the first down and then cutting in and not making said distance? Was driving me mad.
They're always going to give Mahomes (or any star QB) the MVP unless someone else has an unbelievable game offensively, or if it's a defensive shitfest. Good to see a high flying offence get over a top rated defence in the big one for once.

They know exactly where the first down line is, every time, without needing to refer to imaginary lines, or the very real massive fucking pylons on the side of the pitch.
That's 'Receiving and route-running 101' as I believe would be the parlance.
Gray Fox
04-02-2020, 07:35 PM
Most routes are designed to break after x yards, so they know damn well without looking. It'd be like asking a goalkeeper where his goal is without him looking.

It was more that they were cutting to try and get extra yards, but it must have happened 2 or 3 times where they were almost literally at the 1st down line (Hill and Kelce definitely did it) before stepping back and ending up with an X and 1 instead of a first down, which, to me, was quite frustrating.

I only watched the first half of the first game but I enjoyed it.
Yeah, just watched the highlights of both games & it was pretty good. Quality is about the same as the AAF, but the rule changes help give it something different.
Cardale Jones looks to be the best of the four QBs that played, although Phillip Walker had a really strong game up until he threw a pick at the end. The two former Cooper Kupp backups Nelson Spruce & Austin Proehl stood out as well. Tyree Jackson, however, embarrassed himself in the few snaps he took - just seemed to have no idea what to do & got himself sacked on two conversion attempts.

Yeah, I think Austin is his son.
I’d imagine you’ll get Proehl & Spruce, Cardale, Kony Ealy & Rashad Ross at least get a look through training camp, plus anyone else who emerges & people I’ve forgotten from the teams that haven’t played yet. Tyree will get a look too just because of TRAITS.
