To those who think it's racist... Does this mean you shouldn't refer to a 'chinese bloke' in a group of he's the only Chinese lad? Or even a woman? This isn't a straw man - it's genuine - if we can't refer to people by physical characteristics, what can we use?

If you want to go that route you can try not to say something that sounds extroadinarily like the gook/chink/insert other slur here.

What if he'd said the Paki bloke to refer to someone that was clearly from Pakistan?
