I take it you've never been a victim of crime or had to try and apprehend anyone. It's very simple these days, if there's CCTV you will catch them, if there isn't you won't.
Or you've never had to complain about any service ever. Any complaints system without recorded calls is a nightmare to resolve.
I have been the victim of crime but to think that CCTV is some catch all saver compared is nonsense.

Tony was a big CCTV fan wasn't he? I could make up and mend with him over a couple of glasses of red, being filmed from behind a flowerpot.
We had our family minibus driven into at home early in the morning by a paper delivery guy who claimed it wasn't him despite him also having a massive dent in his car and paint flakes from his all over ours. A neighbour had CCTV which meant he was fucked though.

Also, note that we are talking about a specific form of surveillance.
With that face morphing technology that can be done in real time live tv CCTV as a conclusive form of evidence is frankly terrifying, to the extent that you believe the state/police to be a corrupting and malignant agent.
So probably not too much of a concern in the UK.
My take on it is with increased surveillance it becomes easier to use technology with unintended purposes. People who are considered enemies of the state due to their political views can be targeted (and I'm talking about say an environmentalist for example rather than communist for the motherland). While we have a relatively benign government in the UK compared to say Chyna, I still don't approve to more cameras, more tracking and more interference for the supposed trade off of increased security.
There are more human based approaches to policing without the need to track our every movement.
(Yes I know google do that anyway but we shouldn't accept that either)

The danger is as a very powerful tool it should probably be kept out of the hands of complete idiots, like the government or the police, as much as possible.
I'd rather we stopped putting idiots in positions of power, rather than deliberately hindering our ability to stop various crimes.
