I always thought the point of rugger was that if you put your body somewhere it shouldn't be, or you did something you ought not do, the penalty (and hence disincentive to do it) was getting a good shoeing. Professionalism really has fucked it as a sport.

The way they use it is so arbitrary (and a warning for football). I reckon if the referee doesn't spot it, bad luck. As someone who isn't a rugby devotee but can be persuaded, having thrilling tries scored and then cancelled because of a minor infringement that wasn't spotted three phases ago is a poor show.

Stamping is a big no-no. It gets missed in the domestic game a lot more, but doing it to a prone body in open play is always likely to land you a spell in the bin.

The games were scheduled absolutely ages ago and they would have assumed that Japan v USA would be a dead game anyway. On seeding, this game now should be a decider, which is why it's now.
That was an insane period of play. Neither of these teams has the killer touch.
