Yes, I think it did. He's simply not used to winning that many matches in a row and considering what he's been through it's quite amazing he's competing with the best players in the world. Discuss and other throwing things it's hard to get a good grip and throw it far.

Hurdles are the second dangerous on the field in heavy rain as the standing water makes it hard to see the hurdles.

Pole vault is the most dangerous (and the first that got called off when the rain started coming) because you can't grip the pole and it makes it easier for the pole to slip out of the plant area.

Oh and in the discuss (which is going on right now) the athletes are obviously spinning fast, they could easily wipeout.

Athletics people - how does this amount of rain and weather affect the races?

Not a race, but I used to hate triple jumping on a wet track. Each phase felt completely flat as you landed on a layer of water, which just took all spring and momentum out of your jump. I was always well below my best in wet weather.

It's just variations on the same thing. If cycling took a similar approach, you'd have the Pursuit (as an example) over 60, 80 and 100 laps. There's none of that. They're different disciplines, requiring different skills. Even the relays in swimming are just four people swimming as quickly as they can between A and B - the cycling team sports require actual tactics and teamwork.

Not that this denigrates Phelps' achievement, mind. But there's no scope for cyclists to enter eight events in one Games.

Yeah, because there's like 4 or 5 different ways to swim. There's only one way to cycle, you don't go from bicycles to tricycles to the fabled unicycling event. If you're good, you learn to swim all of the ways that exist and you're good for a bunch of events. I don't know how fencing works, but I would think you could get good at all of the fencing styles and win a bunch there too.

At the end of the day, the best event by far is the decathlon. Pure athleticism.

I think the balance in cycling is pretty good. One-on-one sprint racing, racing as part of a group, the pursuit (which is practically a time trial).

One thing I will say in swimming's defence is that the difference between 100m and 200m in a pool is huge. It's comparable in running to the difference between sprinting and middle distance. Backstroke and breaststroke are different enough to the other strokes that there's no real overlap. The medley is basically the decathlon/heptathlon. It's butterfly that's the time-waster (although it does have some similarities to hurdles in a sense - a similar action to the main event but with arbitrary restrictions to make it harder).
