I maintain that, outside of a lot of the athletics, weightlifting is actually the best Olympic sport.

It's fucking brilliant.

It's currently in the absolute toilet thanks to Ilya Ilyin (the top man) and the Russians. Mark Henry will be at home smugly shaking his head.

Best thing about today has been the judo thus far, the Zambian donning the shit out of the bronze medallist at the Worlds was great but the Italian geezer who won the gold was amazing. He was pulling off some really awkward techniques and even slapped out the gold medal favourite.

I watched his match against the German guy which had the best throw I've seen in my (non-extensive) watching of judo. Absolutely amazing, came from nowhere, and the other guy had no idea what had happened. He just went from upright to on his back in an instant.

Only saw highlights but looked like Del Potro was on fire, the power he generates is amazing.

The men's 100m is on at about 1am Sunday night (Monday morning), bit gutted about that. Hoping I'll avoid hearing how it went and watch it as if it's live.

Judo, weightlifting and archery.

The judo especially if it goes to form in the mens and you get the top 2 going to the final.

There's not much unless you're staying up until 2-3am.

There's a Brit in the judo right now too. Not sure what her chances of a medal are though, she looked quite good in her first fight.

Namibian boxer Jonas Junius has been arrested in Rio in connection with an attempted sexual assault of an Olympic Village housekeeper, according to Al Jazeera's Gabriel Elizondo.

Junius, 22, was Namibia's flag-bearer during the opening ceremony. Police reportedly told Elizondo that Junius allegedly tried to force himself on a housekeeper in the athlete village.

A Moroccan boxer was also arrested for sexually assaulting two housekeepers.

In 2001, she won the gold in the hoop and silver in the individual all-around, ball, clubs and rope at the 2001 World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in Madrid, Spain, but Tchachina and her teammate Alina Kabaeva tested positive for a banned diuretic and were stripped of their medals. Irina Viner, the Russian head coach, who also served as the Vice President of the FIG Rhythmic Gymnastics Technical Committee at the time, said her gymnasts had been taking a food supplement called "Hyper" containing mild diuretics, which, according to Viner, the gymnasts were taking for pre-menstrual syndrome. When the supply ran out shortly before the Goodwill Games, the team physiotherapist restocked at a local pharmacy. According to Viner, the supplement sold there was fake and contained furosemide.

The Japanese only got one Judo gold in London. They've dominated the medal table in a big way historically, which is to be expected since they invented the art, but through some combination of the sport itself becoming more famous and its promise as a route into MMA becoming clear more athletes in more nations are getting involved. Long term America and Brazil will likely dominate the field, Cuba too if they can sort their shit out.

They were furious about it after London, and it prompted some soul-searching within the sport (very much like Australia and the swimming). That's why they were specifically hoping for a stronger showing here.

Oh and lol at all the Aussie medal hopes in the pool fucking up.

Australia didn't have the favourite for any event that we've lost so far. :sorry:

We're favourites for:

Mens 100m free (1.4)
Mens 200m back (1.25)
Womens 4x100m medley (1.83)
Womens 100m free (1.33)
Womens 50m free (1.57, 5.5)

Those are the races we're favourites to win (and second-favourite, in the 50m freestyle). Larkin probably has to up his game a little for the 200m, but it's by far his stronger event. The medley is going to be tight, with the Americans at 2.1. I imagine the Americans will come good, but if we even have a chance going into the freestyle leg, we'll bring it home.

They can soul search all they want, but there's an avenue to make big money from being shit hot at Judo now so they'd better get used to getting biffed at their own sport.

It's nothing new either. In pure Judo competitions the French have been doing them in per capita terms for years now, and on the same scale Cuba does everyone in Olympic combat sports.

Not that we win many medals early usually, the odd shooter or a horse dancer aside, and we're not getting close to London levels anyway. 10-08-2016, 01:29 PM
Dunno about your coverage Pep but this is shit, you get about 1 second's worth of visual as to where a rider is at any point, what the fuck use is that? I want a a bar right down the side like Moto GP or something with each rider's times and estimates etc rather than watching 1 bloke cycle round and a blink and you'll miss it time with no context whatsoever.

Pepe
10-08-2016, 01:45 PM
TT coverage is mostly useless. Eventually you get some time checks, like two or three throughout the course, but otherwise there really is nothing to see. Best bet is to just look at the last five or so riders, but even then there is not much to see.

I agree having motorsports-like timing would be cool. Also, having the power/speed/hr/cadence data like they did in Tour of Switzerland would at least make it mildly interesting.

The OBS coverage in general is completely budget compared to anything we're used to on Sky or even the BBC. Suppose that comes from foreigners being in charge.

With cycling time trials you could do all sorts, overlay maps of where riders were at equivalent points, use GPS, literally anything other than the 1970s fare you tend to get.

That is true. I suppose he put the difficulty just high enough that if he pulled it off cleanly, he'd get gold.

TIme for the table tennis women's gold medal match. China v China. Huge upset in the bronze medal match, as the North Korean world #50 won against a Japanese top-ten player.

The Singaporean world #4 went out in the quarterfinals. Although the world #3 isn't here, because you are only allowed two competitors per country. Seems a little bit unfair, when the rankings are so polarized. The men's contest is missing the world #3 and #4 for the same reason.
