This gets underway tomorrow. It's the last vestige of the old south, always fun and this year there are a host of in-form top, top, top players vying for the green jacket.
The first two days are on Sky and the weekend also on BBC.
The par 3 contest is underway on Sky and Gary Player is cruising around like a boss as per.

I'll be watching every minute on BBC over the weekend. Love the Masters.
My money's on Louis Oosthuizen.
Jimmy Floyd

So is mine.
Sky in all their wisdom have sent Kirsty Gallacher over, already seen Sandy Lyle ogle her, not going to be a comfortable week for old Kirsty.

Because Sky I have seen a miniscule amount of golf recently but I didn't think Oosthuizen was still around at all.

Gary Player has just made a hole in one, at the age of 80

I've gone for:
£3 on Rickie Fowler to win @ 14/1
and on Jimmy's instruction, £1e/w on Victor Dibuisson (200) and £1e/w on some Korean fella.
And 50p on Sandy Lyle @ 1000.
Jimmy Floyd

You'd get more return from that 50p if you used it as a weapon in a bank robbery.

I've got:
£1 each way on Oosthuizen at 51.
50p each way on Smylie Kaufman at 201 (cool name).
50p each way on Graeme McDowell at 301 (long shot patriotism).
50p each way on Darren Clarke at 1001 (long shot patriotism).

Garcia just isn't ever going to hole enough putts to win.
Look at the save Speith made on 18 yesterday. That's the kind of thing you need to be doing to win a major, and old Sergio can never get it done (see also Westwood). I'd like to be wrong, but I just can't see either of those two ever winning a major without someone else doing a Van de Velde.

You called it.
Seems like it should be easy for Speith now. Most likely challengers? I'd guess that the only way he could possibly lose without falling apart is if Dustin Johnson has a stupid round of eight under or something, of which he's capable if his streakiness comes good. Unlikely though. Day and Matsuyama could probably work their way up the board if things go their way, but it's a big ask.

Hideki is the best ever player from Asia in terms of ability. Doesn't always mean you win a major but he could well do.
Smylie is a right bolter. Only got his tour card six months ago. Qualified for this by virtue of randomly winning in Las Vegas from about 1000 shots behind.

Reckon he's better than Y. E. Yang and K. J. Choi? Choi certainly had a long career at the top level, although Yang was more of a bolter.
I mean, I'm inclined to agree, but they had good careers on the whole.

I don't get disliking Spieth. I mean, there's plenty of golfers who are easy to dislike: Mickelson, (Bubba) Watson, Poulter, etc.
Spieth doesn't seem to have the personality, arrogance or drive to be that unlikeable.

I used to like him but since he lost the Open last year, he's behaved like a spoiled child on course. His interview on Friday night where he just whined about everything was a joke. He also has the sort of frat boy air about him that I find it very hard to warm to. He's also become incredibly slow, which is a big no no and the number one thing that turns people off golf. The last group finished almost two holes behind last night.

I'm with Ital on this one, where I can't see the reasoning behind the hate. I had put it down to people hating on the incumbent (I assume people complained that Tiger made the game look boring when he was in his prime?).
He's 22, polite and gracious whenever I've seen him (albeit through gritted teeth), and obviously a very talented golfer. No hate from me here.
First golf tournament I've watched in full, so clearly the slowness hasn't quite hit me yet. When's the next big one?
On another note, the course and weather in Georgia make me want to go there. Shame it's full of Americans really.

It was predictable with Tiger for a few years but he did it by taking the golf courses apart and blowing everyone away with aggressive brilliance. Spieth does it (nowhere near as well) through the avoidance of mistakes and robot putting inside 20 feet.
It's not that I hate Spieth per se, it's just that I'd rather see 90% of the field win ahead of him. Bubba, Fowler and Dustin Johnson are three of the exceptions.
Next major is the US Open at Oakmont in June. There are a few other biggies before then including the Players at Sawgrass in Florida, and over here, the PGA at Wentworth.

All on Sky, for the same reason every other decent sport is on Sky. It's too long an event to settle in and watch when there's so many ad breaks. Even the F1 is a bit balls now with them (though there are many other reasons it's shitter now).
Jimmy Floyd
17-07-2016, 09:48 AM
Sky doesn't have ads during F1 races.
The people who run sports love pay TV because it gives THEM money to spend on the sport, but they fail to realise that that doesn't help attract new followers, just existing ones. Cricket is just about big enough to survive it, but golf is going to really struggle. Golf also has the problem of being run by 75 year old fucks who don't understand the modern world.
There is another side of the argument (primarily from cricket) in which they've basically used the Sky money to create a much better setup and infrastructure for women's cricket, which they couldn't have done otherwise, so you can't really knock that.

Paid tv absolutely ruins sport. I used to love F1 and now I've lost all interest. I used to watch the major golf tournaments as well, but simply can't anymore (not streaming golf ffs) just seems a shame.
As Jimmy says, it's a trade off between grassroots and wider appeal. If it was always on free to air, you'd have people complaining that the grassroots are being neglected through lack of investment - which they wouldn't have the capacity to provide without pay TV.
Wimbledon is on free to air TV, but you don't see people down at the tennis courts outside one month a year when there's a sudden surge of interest. The Olympics was going to lead to a huge surge in interest in track and field in this country, for example - there's probably not a huge body of evidence to suggest that it has.
It's difficult to know which side of the line to fall on, really. I'd probably edge towards grassroots as they're the people actually going out and playing the game, and making a financial contribution themselves to it through membership fees and time commitment - not just wanting something to put on in the background.
I suspect you're never going to get the balance right.

Aren't the likes of golf, tennis, motor racing etc fairly exclusive to the high society with money though? So TV won't really effect grass roots.

That's easily the best final round of golf I've ever seen in a major, probably the best two, although Mickelson was aided by some crowd assistance and remarkable scrambling. Stenson must have made about 3 genuine errors in the round and two of those were leaving very long putts a bit short. Felt like he hit about 17 greens in regulation and the fact that he meffed a couple of makeable 6-footers that would have been for a 61/62 in the final analysis is mad. I guess that must be at least the equal lowest final round score at a major.

I reckon the scale of his collapse is proportionate to how likely he is to win. Has he ever taken a decent lead (3 shots+) into a final round? My memory of Turnberry is fairly hazy as I was at the course and didn't have up to date leaderboards very often, but he seemed to be well on top there at different points and I remember going away thinking he should have won.

Yeah, I draw a bit of a blank on Westwood final rounds. He very often seems to be in the position where you think if he can stick a 67 or somesuch in then he'll be right there, only for him to plod round with a disappointing 73. Agree on the collapse to prospect of winning ratio, which makes me think he could onmly ever do it in a Faldo-esque 18 pars sort of way, which would either need a big lead, or for everyone else to have a meltdown. Not sure which is less likely really. Probably the 18 pars.
