He's done well though, fair play to him.

Still two weeks until the Masters but I highly recommend anyone interested tune in for the World Matchplay final on SS4 on the hour. Dustin Johnson v Jon Rahm, world number one in insane form against 22 year old Spanish tyro, also in insane form and both are hitting it miles. Lovely country club course in Austin, Texas as well.

Sky all week, BBC at the weekend.
Dustin Johnson has opened proceedings by falling down some stairs and his participation is in doubt. Such a Dustin thing to do.

Anyone but 'Rory'.

They only start the proper live coverage at 8pm anyway as the good ol' boys down there have to protect the 'patrons'.
Giggles
06-04-2017, 09:54 AM
That's right too, this one does start coverage later. I'll do the first two rounds on Eir Sport as they normally have less ad breaks than Sky on most other things. Harrington is commentating for someone, could be them, which would be a minus though.
Jimmy Floyd
06-04-2017, 09:57 AM
I turned on the preview on Sky last night and there was Paul McGinley, golf's answer to the 'proper football man', verbally puffing up his mates as always. I'll organise a whip round to have him on the Irish coverage instead.

Charley Hoffman was in the last group on Sunday a couple of years ago (when Spieth won) and I don't think the host network showed any of his shots. He's the sort of person who American TV tries to pretend doesn't exist.
The BBC also referring to players ranked top 50 in the world as 'little known Americans', I love it.
Still, good to see Westy already in the top three, ideally placed to pick up the pieces when the Hoff collapses on Sunday.

Jimmy Floyd
07-04-2017, 08:43 PM
Nah. He's not playing well enough tee to green. Short game digging him out. You can't win the Masters that way from seven back, he'd have to shoot 65 and 68 or something.
I had Fowler and Mickelson (of the top names) for this and happy with that so far. Rahm is absolute class as well. Reckon he might win the Open at Birkdale.

Westwood sticking it to within 3 feet off the tee and then missing the put could be a Bill Murray comedy vehicle.
Jimmy Floyd
08-04-2017, 09:10 PM
I'd actually quite like Hoffman to go on and win too, if only for the raging seethe it would cause from a less famous player daring to do well (golf, especially American golf, biologically despises the unheralded).

Enter William McGirt. I was thinking as he was up there that his name is more suited to a rogue PGA win (or maybe a US Open gone wrong in the style of Lucas Glover) than a proper one.
Jimmy Floyd
08-04-2017, 09:21 PM
His name is more suited to assassinating a little known 19th century President than anything to do with golf.

I see an amateur there with one of those long putters. I thought they were banner, or is he allowed because he's an amateur?
Jimmy Floyd
09-04-2017, 06:37 PM
You're allowed long putters but you're not allowed to anchor it in your body. So what a lot of them do is practice with it anchored and then hold it millimetres away for the actual putt.
niko_cee
09-04-2017, 06:52 PM
Do any actual/club amateurs ever use those long putters? Or is the temptation to buy one (can you buy one?) the point at which you get measured up for your Team Sky lycra onesie?
Jimmy Floyd
09-04-2017, 07:04 PM
I've never seen a clubbie use one, though they do have them for sale in the fancier pro shops. It's basically for people who get the yips, which is realistically going to be pros. Bernhard Langer/Adam Scott made/saved their careers on the back of them but most people don't get as horrendously yippy as they did.

Had to call it a day after the 16th. Glad to see Sergio did it, although I wasn't expecting him to. Genuinely thought he'd lost it when he lined his feet up on 13. To come back from there was fairly unlikely. I suppose there had to be a bit of Seve in there somewhere.
Jimmy Floyd
10-04-2017, 07:42 AM
His irons into greens 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 (twice) were all phenomenal. I don't think he was further away than about 12 feet on any of them.
Could only have been bettered if he was reeling in some cunt like Bubba Watson.
I dropped out when they were on the 10th, but watching it back now (perks of working from home).
How much was this Garcia playing well (which from the above, sounds likely) and how much was it Rose doing a Garcia? I ask as I've just seen him play that ridiculous tee shot on the 13th...
Regardless, still genuinely pleased to see him finally win one.
Jimmy Floyd
10-04-2017, 09:59 AM
13th green was big. After that it was gladiatorial stuff all the way in from both players, but Garcia obviously from behind.
Garcia on 15 was fairly epic as well.
niko_cee
10-04-2017, 10:00 AM
The swing (or lack thereof) on 13 when Rose missed that short birdie putt felt massive, but I wouldn't say it was a bottle job from Rose (although I haven't seen 17 and 18). He played exactly how I think everyone thought he would (solid), put the pressure on Sergio and it took a fairly herculean effort on his part to come back from looking like it had broken him.
Jimmy Floyd
10-04-2017, 10:04 AM
Rose made a slight arse of 17 with a one shot lead, but even that wasn't terrible golf, just went in a bunker and missed a putt.
Probably the best closing holes I can remember since the Woods/DiMarco one.
I watched a bit of this and even from my position of very little knowledge it was obviously brilliant stuff.
Sergio Garcia has a tiny head, by the way. My mate has a picture of himself with him and he looks like Spikey.

Jimmy Floyd
08-04-2018, 08:43 PM
We haven't had any real surprises for a few years. There was a brilliant period in about 2002-04 when Tiger went off it for a bit and we had luminaries like Rich Beem, Ben Curtis, Shaun Micheel and Todd Hamilton scooping up the big prizes.
In golf you have to beat everyone in the field to win, which is a lot harder to do and more random than tennis where you just have to win 7 head to head shootouts.
It's less about me considering them to be surprises than there being a bigger disparity between my level of golf knowledge and golf's popularity than other sports of a similar level.
That said I just read an article about Reed and he sounds like a fanny so I'm all about the Anyone But Reed bandwagon. Not that I'm actually watching it, you understand.

They massively bottled the decision in giving him the 2-shot penalty, particularly when you consider what he said afterwards.
"If someone is offended I apologise, but toughen up. Knowing the rules is never a bad thing. You always want to use them in your favour," said Mickelson.
"I know the rules and the ball was going to go off in a bad spot. I did not feel like continuing going back and forth. I would still be out there potentially. I've wanted to do it many times before and finally did," said Mickelson.
Quite how that isn't a "an action with the intent to influence the movement of a ball in play" (a DQ offence) is anyone's guess.

Jimmy Floyd

The people who want to watch it will absolutely not watch, Golf Twitter suggests such people are in a huge majority.
The problem the PGA has is that it's a shit tournament held on deliberately easy courses, so of course broadcasters aren't getting near the sums they pay for the three good Majors.

Jimmy Floyd
14-08-2018, 09:11 AM
He'll win more as well. Easily the best of the current Americans, has the best temperament in the game, hits it miles, has broad experience, putts well... a bit of a kick in the teeth for most of America who want Spieth to be that guy.
When you think for all DJ's game he only has one major and Brooks has 3, there's the difference between the two. Brooks is only in his 20s as well.

If there is, it'll be because Tiger was in contention on Sunday and Tiger is probably 20-30 times more popular than golf is. You definitely see that sort of absurd skewing on US TV figures for golf - it's literally all about Tiger, and if he isn't winning then nobody is interested.
It's cute that tech heads like to think streaming has anything to say with regards to the future of live sport but it just simply does not - fracturing an already fractured product, we know from years of experience, makes sport less popular and less engaged with. Where streaming/online giants might have something to say is sideshows like that City doc that Amazon are bringing out.
Live TV is here to stay when it comes to sport, the numbers prove it and tech nerds just have to accept it.

Jimmy Floyd
17-08-2018, 08:51 AM
The crucial tool he has for Augusta is left handedness. Bubba two jackets, Phil 3, Bob Charles back in the day... there's a reason Mike Weir won a major.
There are loads of right to left tee shots at Augusta (particularly 10 and 13) and lefties love those.
Bombers tend not to do particularly well around there as you really have to be in position and you can't just bully the golf course.

Obviously when it comes down to it I'll be all over Poults mugging them off, but deep down a US win would probably reignite it for me. Not going great.
Getting mugged in the top game looks like it'll be a big loss. Rahm horseshoeing that 6-footer to go 2-up and Finau's outrageous fluke off the railway sleepers soon after pivotal.

Yeah, Rose and Rahm were out in front for pretty much the whole match, then botched the last, and the yanks got it back to all square after Finau stuck it to within 5 feet of a par 3 (the 16th?) off the railway sleepers around the green. It was mad lucky.

I can't think of a better scenario for Europe than Phil getting a double-benching tomorrow, getting bored and destroying US team morale.
Well, I suppose him playing again would be a better scenario, but you know what I mean. I think him and DeChambeau is one of the worst pairings you could ever dream up, two borderline ADHD fucking weirdos, and good ol' Team USA smashed it out of the park.
I read something about how this morning Bryson was trying to come up with scientific ideas for how to win and Phil was lapping it up. I mean, come on.
Jimmy Floyd
28-09-2018, 05:54 PM
Also, Koepka is basically their best golfer (number 3 in the world, won 3 of the last 6 majors), played brilliantly in the morning, and they benched him for the God Squad and the aforementioned comedy duo. What's all that about?
It's as if his face doesn't quite fit into the spring break wanker hegemony that seems to exist in the US golfing establishment.

I listened to some on the radio earlier, which was an interesting experience as the commentators don't really have a lot to work with or any time to work with it ('The ball goes up...') but do a decent job considering, although you also get quite a lot of 'Molinari, richly tanned forearms...' and the like.

Poulter/Rahm is an odd one. McIlroy/Poulter yesterday was genius, with the former being his usual lazy self in the morning he needed an injection of madness to focus him in the afternoon. Double madness though, not sure.

I was just putting my putative list together for them, the problem they have is that they had two totally useless pairings yesterday who are all benched at the moment, but the people on the course aren't exactly covering themselves in glory either.
