I’ve to pick one myself this year (in the smaller class) but it’s looking like there’s huge delays on everything. The Caddy and Connect are the obvious choices, though the new version of the latter (that’s basically a Caddy with a Ford badge the same as the new Transporter will be a Connect with a VW badge) has never seen the light of day. I don’t think any of the other manufacturer groups do an automatic.

Wouldn't your feet be sticking out the door if you were camping in that?
Awning job for camping, not thinking a fully converted one just sling a cooler and Ooni in the back and disappear for a weekend. Then have the use of one as a proper van when needed, like when I had a load of doors in the back of the Tucson the other week and the boot my father-in-law had tied down popped up mid journey. Thankfully the passing police car ignored me :moop:

Car rental prices are fucking ridiculous. Apparently during Covid a lot of companies just sold half their fleet, meaning they stacked the prices of the remaining vehicles.

Manual is great if you’re in something exceptional to drive and out for the enjoyment (also applies to petrol over diesel), but given that 99% of the time we’re all just trundling along commuting, etc then auto is the definitely way forward.
Surprised it has taken this long for automatics to take over in Europe.

Automatics are shit.

Every single automatic since like the 60s has the option to manually shift down, so you can do both of those just fine.
Spikey M
23-05-2022, 02:33 PM
The power to manually adjust gears you say? Imagine.
We’ve got a couple of Fords at work that are automatics and the gearbox’s are fucking useless. The Audi I just got rid of had an automatic that was decent but still not amazing. I’ve driven an RS6 Avant and the automatic was exceptional. If I’m not spending over £40k on a car then I’d still lean towards manual as it’s still very much a “pay peanuts, get monkeys” component.

If you're set on a "hot hatch" then Golf R (pre-2020, before they started cheaping out on everything) is the way to go. Cupra 280/290 would be great also as they are VAG family.

Yeah they look insane, but way out of budget.
One thing I would recommend is that if you go for a Golf R or similar, don't buy private (especially if it seems a "good" price). I remember looking for a Supra for years and this was the main problem too.
Had a reminder about the Ecosport car tax being due which means we can finally get rid of it. :jayjay: The car is actually okay but the boot is non-existent and every time I see it I wish we’d have just got a Kuga.
Just spent half an hour scrolling Autotrader and sent a shortlist to my wife:
These all have under 20,000 miles, are no older than 2019, all have rear cameras (not just sensors) and can be delivered to our house. Sorted from cheapest to dearest. I filtered as £2000 deposit over 4 years doing 10k miles a year and they were all under £300 a month, which doesn’t even factor in exchanging/selling our existing car so should be even less.
MG ZS, 2021, 7145 miles, £17798: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202205316331895
Jeep Compass, 2020, 16101 miles, £19699: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202206016397259
Nissan Qashqai, 2021, 14563 miles, £19950: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202207258121655
Volkswagen Tiguan, 2019, 19600 miles, £20,349: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202208028400485
Peugeot 3008, 2021, 8857 miles, £21885: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202206136734568
Skoda Karoq, 2020, 7923 miles, £22559: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202207187892266
My top 3 picks would be
1 Skoda
2 Jeep
3 Peugeot
But really would be happy with any of these.
That red Jeep is so so mega.
My wife is test driving a Karoq today. If all goes well I’ll be buying one of the following two cars, but not sure which to get:
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202207187892266
Pros:
less miles
slightly newer
slightly cheaper
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202208018353773
Pros:
Bigger screen
Bigger wheels :cab:
It’s not white
8k Vs 22k miles is the main thing.

Because they're mis-sold? Basically hatchbacks on stilts.
They're too big.
They're too big.
Some of them.
The most popular ones like the Qashqai are basically a pumped up hatchback and their footprint is actually no larger. Nissan pulled off a bit of genius with the first Qashqai, convincing everyone to pay for a "SUV" that has no more leg room or boot space than some hatchbacks. Then everyone else jumped on board and that's why you see things like the Qashqai, Evoque and Kuga everywhere these days because clever marketing conned people into overpaying for what is still essentially a hatchback.

Just taken the Skoda Kamiq out for a test drive engine so quiet it's like driving a electric motor lovely car.
Test drove the petrol 1 litre 109bhp version was incredibly fast drove around for about an hour and came back averaging 51mpg.
Amazed how silent the engine is had to double check it was actually running a few times.
Mrs hates how the front end looks though and feels its to low to the ground so that's put an end to getting that.
So it's back to trying the new Mokka out for a run or having a look at the 2022 Nissian Quashqui?!?
Think I'll file for a divorce and get the Skoda.
The previous Qashqai was almost universally panned by people who know their cars (despite its incredible popularity with Joe Public). I've not experienced the new one myself but apparently it's a big improvement.

Anyone had a Subaru? I quite like the Legacy though on AutoTrader at least it seems to be covid inflated on price.
With Japanese you expect affordable to buy (relative to competitors), cheap replacement parts and excellent reliability. Weirdly the Legacy (and Subaru generally) doesn’t seem to fall into any of those categories. I’d avoid if possible, not because it’s shit (it’s not) but because you don’t get the usual high points of a Japanese made car. I’d only look to Subaru if I wanted a WRX for a bit of fun.

The Kia EV6 has a pretty funky breadvan shape, but they're all fundamentally boring aren't they. Unimaginative too, seeing as the lack of an engine and a transmission tunnel opens up all sorts of design possibilities that nobody is utilising.
The Ioniq is not bad looking either I'd say but yes, they are all boring as fuck. Then again, people love their bland gray SUVs so that is what we get.

I've not long spent an absolute fortune on my Clio Trophy. Had it since 2014 when I bought it for £5k but their value has only gone up in recent years so it was either sell due to the rust that had taken hold (thank you Scottish roads in the winter) or bite the bullet and go all in. Went for the latter as I know I'd be kicking myself in years to come if I got rid.
Almost ended up at a full respray but the budget meant it had to stop somewhere, only thing not painted was the front bumper and roof. Major expense was replacing the two rear quarter panels as the rot had well and truly set in. Threw in a new bonnet as well. Biggest surprise for me was the state of the inner arches that's not visible until you've hacked off the outer panel, can only imagine a lot of 182's are in a similar state but hidden from the outisde. A "major" service is usually when they change things like transmission fluids and other lubricants, in addition to the usual engine oil and filters. If you haven't done over 20,000 miles tell them to swivel and get a local garage to do a regular service for about £200.

If it got to the stage of analysing the ECUs post crash I think I'd have bigger problems than invalid insurance.
My Fiesta's power steering slowly died due to a leak about a year ago and I had a few months of just continuing to drive it like a go-kart without oil. I took it in and my perserverance had fucked the pump so spent £400 replacing it. About 6 months on and the power steering went again. Another few months of driving like an F1 driver in Monaco and a more competent mechanic has finally seen it was an issue with the rack that was causing the problem so £350 for the rack and £250 for a new pump. Gonna miss that sweet sweet handling and the gains I was getting in my back muscles.
