I loved The Lobster. It's complete nonsense but hilariously so. I thought it was starting to lose its way in the last third but it pulls it back for a very good ending.

On the Old Board I said:
I think the advert looks good. Then again, eight people sitting around exchanging tired TARANTINO DIALOGUE... I think it's going to hinge on how long it is. Two hours (or less) and it might be tight enough to work. If it's pushing three then abandon ship.
167 minutes. What are the odds that some bits are brilliant, some bits are shit, and that it's half an hour too long?

High Fidelity is a Top 5 movie.
I watched that the other day. I didn't think it was that great.
I watched The End of the Tour last night. It's got Jason Segel as David Foster Wallace and Jesse Eisenberg as David Lipsky who spent time on the road with him on his book tour for Infinite Jest interviewing him. It's seriously good. I really want to read Infinite Jest now.

Really? It's got great pacing with a well presented internal dialogue that works in contrast to most book to film translations. There's not a bad performance in it. I adore it.
Also I think I like films about Music that aren't about music. Human Traffic being another one that pulls on my nostalgia strings even though I'm not sure it holds up.
DM ( :cool2: ) once said that Human Traffic was so bad, he'd pay me £10 to travel to his house and take the DVD from his collection.

To carry on, Clark has a completely different posture to Superman and his glasses also change his eye colour from a sparkling blue to a duller blue.
It's hard to comprehend but people see Superman as, effectively, a god amongst men. He is a completely different entity to the clumsy and nerdy Clark Kent (who also wears slightly larger suits so as not to show that he has a well toned body).
It's so farcical to people that Superman could be just a regular guy that they can't look at anyone and think 'Oh shit, he's actually Superman'.
It's a bit like change blindness:

Watched Reservoir Dogs last neet. Classic.
Bridge of Spies is draped head to toe in Stars 'n' Stripes propaganda, and it was probably watered down in places to make it a 12A, but it's pretty good besides that.
Just went back to see what others thought of it and had a good laugh at this:
Bridge of Spies is a masterpiece, and probably the best movie of the year. It hits every note perfectly. Far more balanced than the Martian, for instance. Tom Hanks is phenomenal but Mark Rylance takes the cake, I imagine he's a shoe-in for Best Supporting Actor. Every performance is great, though. Every shot is great. Damn.

I don't think it was propaganda. The justice system, the CIA and the whole McCarthyism thing got a bit of a going over.
There was a lot of juxtaposing the two systems, mostly with the intent of making the communists look cruel and incompetent. I don't doubt that it was accurate to have East Berlin look drab and miserable but the bit that got me most was:
The deliberate contrast between the two interrogations, where the Soviets were essentially torturing Powers and waking him regularly with bright lights and shouting, but the Americans were lovely and sweet with Abel, bumbling around while he got up at his own pace.
There was also the ending, where they made it look like Abel would be going back to be treated cruelly (or possibly executed).
Henry

The part at the end just seemed to be part of the story, leaving it more emotionally ambiguous for Tom Hanks, rather than a comment on the communists altogether. If you're looking for communism then surely you should point at the bit at the very end where he's looking out the train window, especially when he sees the kids jumping over a fence (and not getting shot like in Berlin).
I dislike this word but I would call it more patriotic than propagandic. What he says to the ginger spy about the power of the constitution seemed like patriotism in the best sense, celebrating the ideals of the country even when this contradicts the government at the time.

Had I mentioned three scenes instead of two I would have added the train one, yes. Donovan's speeches about "our values" again just seemed like more of the USA USA USA chest-thumping to me. Yes, it shows his patriotism and the patriotism of others, but we still have it juxtaposed with dishonest Soviets torturing people.

See, I think you took the torture scene worse than I did. I just saw it as an unpleasant inevitability of the Cold War rather than anything particularly damning about the Soviets. If the conditions were slightly worse it wouldn't exactly be surprising. A scene of Abel being interrogated would've helped, I agree, though the film didn't feel like it needed it.

There's a difference between not showing Abel being interrogated because the film doesn't really need it, and showing a very deliberate juxtaposition as they did.

Yeah that's what I thought as well. It seems to suffer the more and more common GCI fate in films of doing everything really Fuzzy, Dark, Smoky & a (only a little) Fiery [MASSIVE] scenes - presumably of the same reasons they stick a sepia filter on all videogames (it makes it easier to animate or something).
The first (new) Superman film is one of the best (worst) examples of this horrible trend. The Superman vs Batman one looks like it's much the same. Thor - The Dark world is another. Just having watched the X-Men Apocalypse trailer, I can see it happening there as well. There are surely more that I can't think of now though.

Yeah, me.
It's largely to do with the atmospheres and why Superman is strong.
In the preamble Russell Crowe says that Kal-El will be stronger because he'll have grown up with the extra nourishment of earth's atmosphere and our younger sun. This is promptly rubbished when the goon platoon turn up and are immediately as strong as him, despite having never been to earth before, and wearing suits at all times which shield them from both our atmosphere and our sun.
When Superman boards the spaceship he starts coughing up blood because of the different oxygen composition in their atmosphere, and when he gets close to that bastard machine he begins to lose his strength, yet he has no problem breathing in space.

I'm pretty sure it just scans the page for any instances of "Star, "Wars", "Fuck you George Lucas" and other relevant words.

Yep, the TTH front page also gets a warning because of the thread about the movie. I guess it's very cautious in that it warns you about every single page that has the title on it.

A great performance by the kid, but I felt the film was missing something. The first chapter should have been a little shorter (though it dragging did help to set the scene), and the second half should have focused more on his mum. The final scene was quality, though.

What a film.
August: Osage County: Very good. I noticed it is based off a screenplay, I can see how that would be excellent as a play. Strong performances from the usual suspects. 7/10
Jurassic World: It is complete and utter nonsense. It, however, succeeds at not taking itself seriously and be entertaining enough to not be a waste of time. 5/10

The Revenant is good, with some amazing cinematography and a very good performance by Di Caprio. That scene must be one of the most visceral I've seen.
On the downside, the film suffers a bit from always building to a climax that you know is coming, Tom Hardy is rubbish and the story itself doesn't justify a 156 minute runtime.

Granted, I also didn't really buy his croaking in Mad Max while most people I talked to didn't have any problem with it. :sorry:

Hmm, had no issue here. Stated the character was from Texas and had the accent that suited the area so found it believable. Played it quite well for me.
The movie itself was pretty stunning though, I'm with DS in this one, masterpiece.
For Hardy 'acting' roles, Locke and the Krays movie are arguably the best I've seen him in. The only reason to watch that Krays movie was simply how good Hardy was at portraying both of them.
