:D What is this?

Because that is the only one that messes with the 'universe'. There is no explanation of the character (whether James Bond exists in the present, whether it's a codename, if Skyfall is the big reset) that justifies him having a tricked out sixties motor in his garage.

Sir Andy Mahowry
03-11-2015, 12:32 AM
Edited better it would have been fine, but after Skyfall I suspect Mendes was given more license than he should have been and the film had far too much baggage as a result.

Also, this homage shit to the older films needs to stop.
You're more than likely right, it certainly sounded that way during Mendes's introduction speech at the cast and crew screening.

SvN

Just a reminder for anyone that didn't know, Mahow saw Spectre at a private screening with an intro by Sam Mendes.

Why couldn't they have given him that car?

He didn't say anything like "Oh yeah, I remember driving this" did he? (Did he?)

:sorry: It just works. Probably because each one is largely independent. A number of them suck, but you can just ignore those ones. It's a bit harder to write off rubbish installments in a series which relies on continuity.

It's basically a shared spy archetype which carries over a name. As long as people want to watch spies, they'll watch Bond.

It used to work. But I find it bland and uninteresting these days. The concept has had its day, I fear.

QE Harold Flair
03-11-2015, 01:18 AM
I think we've all but established that Harold just doesn't like fiction based movies.

Mostly true these days but I still love many. Not as many lately, but still.

Based on what measure? If you're talking about popularity, they're arguably more popular than they've been since Connery was doing it. If you're talking about critical reception, Casino Royale and Skyfall were both very highly regarded, and that's as good a hit ratio as any previous point in the franchise.

It's totally fine if they're not your bag, but I can't see the franchise showing any evidence of losing steam.

Since all the films that DS recommended seemed so fucking scary, I ended up watching It follows instead, which was kind of shit really. I'm just not cut out for horror films. Have to read the whole plot in advance, and that usually just puts me off watching it when I see how horrible they are.

The only two ones I've properly enjoyed were The Exorcist and The Exorcism of Emily Rose. I also thought The Last Exorcism was sort of OK.

Now the lady wants to watch this film called The Conjuring which I've very reluctantly agreed to :uhoh: :uhoh: :uhoh:

I've always wondered what it would be like to be eaten by a grizzly. Now I know. It would be absolutely fucking horrendous as they make no attempt to kill their prey before tucking in. Plus they come back in drips and drabs for massive chunks. Also the silence is eerie apart from the human screams the bear just grunts in a low voice.

We don't get to hear the girl getting chowed.

Leaves a lot to the imagination, however if you watch the Indian farmer getting his face eaten alive by a brown bear it gives you a good idea of what was going on.

Just watched Lockerbie: My Brother's Bomber about a bloke who's brother was killed on Pan Am 103. He basically investigated it himself, not PI or anything just a regular bloke. Unreal the amount of info he managed to get, enough that as a direct result of the documentary the US government has managed to start questioning two key suspects in the case.

Kenny MacAskill should be fucking ashamed allowing that cunt to go free.

Hull Odeon is now pushing itself as THE CHEAPEST CINEMA IN THE COUNTRY. I had a free ticket on my Odeon card (lol) for Spectre, but I think The Martian was about £5.80. The South can keep its jobs and opportunities.

I saw Under the Skin at the Odeon at Leicester Square and it struck me as very expensive, which I assumed was just a London thing but perhaps not.

Yesterday I saw a screening of Benedict Cumberbatch's Hamlet at the Barbican. It more or less lived up to the height, I think; until intermission it was one of the best, most intense things I've seen in the "theater," though it did fall off a little at the end. I think it was designed to appeal to more of a mass audience - it was very cinematic, definitely a blockbuster - which is why the friends I sat with liked it much more than the professors my parents sat with.

Sir Andy Mahowry
08-11-2015, 09:04 PM
Leicester Square is more expensive than your average cinema but not by a huge margin.

2D film here is £10.40 if you walk in off the street (10% discount if you book online).

It's far better to just buy a card (£16.90 with Cineworld) and you're free to go to as many films as you wish.

There were a few bits that I thought were hilarious (the time where he just runs away from the policeman is one of the funniest things I've seen in the cinema recently) but on the whole I just didn't feel any emotional connection to the characters. You also never got the sense that things would turn out badly, the stakes were zero for me.

I think it's telling that when I think back on the film, my mental image is of a cartoon rather than live-acted. I think Fantastic Mr. Fox is far, far better (partly because it's more understated).

I haven't seen the latter, but Ant-Man is just light hearted superhero fluff. Paul Rudd is an exceptional comic actor though, so he elevates the sort of jokes that fall a little flat when Captain Evans or whoever tries them.

Does this prove that James Bond is a time traveller with the baddy reveal? And once again, I'm struggling to see why the bad guy is doing what he's doing. When was the last time a Bond villains plan made sense?

Jurassic World is a actually alright. It's stupid as fuck and often leaves you going 'erm...really?' but I wasn't bored once and given it's a 2.05hr long film that's a mighty achievement. It was very predictable though, but throw Dinosaurs in to the mix and it automatically adds a 2 to the rating. So that just shows you how bad 3 was.

I thought it the first time and I think it now: It feels forced. I don't know why. Maybe because it's got a different vibe to Lock Stock and so on. A lot of the dialogue etc just doesn't feel natural to me, like it's trying too hard. It's a decent enough film and I enjoyed it, but yeah.
