Like Cristiano Ronaldo I have returned late from my summer off football.

Unlike him I not angling for a move. What other message boards even are there at that point? I don't fancy trying to parley my joint third funniest award into a transfer to Mumsnet or something.

And speaking of mums* it's the women's Euros this month. I expect the group stages are going to feature a number of one-sided games but I really enjoyed the knockouts of the World Cup and anything's better than another few weeks of reading about United being "near" to signing de Jong.

I had it in my head the World Cup meant the Premier League was kicking off at the end of this month so frankly learning I don't have to watch United again for a further month is a blessed relief.

* That is a Grade A segue.

Shindig

Might get into the Euros after the group stage. The gulf between some nations make it a bit of a non-event until knockouts.

Then again, not much football on this month, unless you're big into friendlies.

I'm not sure what level Salah would become too pricey, but it isn't £13m.

£11.5m for Haaland is interesting though.

Haaland was the shoe-in hence Salah being too costly in my mind to balance the rest of the team but FPL, I'm crap at it anyway, TAA, Robertson and Diaz as my Liverpool trio. Not touching Nunez until I have seen a bit more of him.

If the primary purpose is entertainment, how many entertaining men's matches have you watched lately? If you watch three or four a week I reckon you only get two or three really good ones per month.

Women's football is clearly physically inferior, and they should make the fucking goals smaller, but a lot of the top sides are pretty good tactically these days. That England game there was probably more engaging than the average Southgate affair.

Shindig
06-07-2022, 09:09 PM
I wouldn't even touch the size of the goals. A big part of goalkeeping is putting yourself in harm's way. Women have that level of self-preservation that stops them barrelling out with their fists to clear. Unless there's an easily available compilation on youtube that immediately disproves my hot, hot take. :uhoh:

Ian
06-07-2022, 09:11 PM
Unless you're absolutely adamant that for football to be good there absolutely must be a penis jostling about in every pair of shorts then once you're past the group stages (95% of group stage matches for any competition for either gender are dull as dishwater so nothing to worry about there) then the knockouts of this will likely be good as they were for the last tournament because stakes are what makes sport worth bothering with, and why the vast majority of men's football is also just killing time until the good shit happens.

Don
06-07-2022, 09:13 PM
The quality and entertainment are truly not so bad that you can't enjoy it, same as with your average Sunday league affair you might enjoy. It's really just a matter of caring enough which an average person probably would if their own nation is involved.

The reality is men need bigger goals.

I bet the average female footballer is a similar size to the men from 1874 these days.

I think I have read before that the average woman's height now is about the same size as the average man was when this goal size was standardised.

However the ball was also likely a fucking bowling ball so it would have been floating out of reach way less often.

I honestly don't have much of an opinion on it. It probably shows more in the games which are one way traffic but when it's evenly matched teams does the women's game have notably higher scores on average?

Wayne Rooney back to the MLS as manager of DC United seems a bit of a backwards step given he reportedly turned down Everton at one point. I understand why he left Derby (would have been nice if he'd stayed and guided them up, mind) but only benefit to joining DC I see is he'll be able to make more mistakes whilst he gains experience than he would in England.

Smjffy

Not sure how you can come to that conclusion given they very nearly did last season. I imagine Haaland will score plenty but stranger things have happened, unlikely as it may be I know.

Newcastle don't seem to be going gung ho in the manner City and Chelsea did, if anything they seem to be more reserved and buying who they need. European football will be a huge success for them I reckon.

Dark Soldier

City will absolutely piss the league for the next 4/5 years.

Genuinely think Liverpool will drop off a little this season then be back to being just another top 4 side.

We'll barely scrape top 4 for a few seasons, most we can expect.

Smjffy
12-07-2022, 02:59 PM
Maybe. I don't see it myself given the only time we've regressed that much was because of a horrendous injury crisis. If we do then we can't have any excuses given we've spent a decent amount.

I'm a little iffy about not signing a midfielder given how injury prone a few of ours are but what can you do. Man United will have their moments but surely can't be as bad as last season.

The 'global fan' isn't interested in anything bar the best six or seven teams in the world. I've learned a lot about this from my mate the Arab. If we're going to get there, we might as well do it the way Leicester did. However that happened.

Both City and Chelsea bought like teenagers with their first credit card. I suppose we benefited from having a very immediate problem to solve with relegation. And a small squad with obvious room for improvement. Chelsea bought everyone and then Ranieri had no idea how to fit them in. City were all STATEMENT OF INTENT at every turn. Now they have to offset that bollocks by pretending the stadium has the walls lined with money.

Newcastle continue their pre-season with a 3-0 win over 1860 Munich. Once again, all goals came from midfield. Chris Wood got an assist, though. Joelinton threw in a massive two-footed lunge on someone which was Gazza-esque.

The main thing women footballers seem to lack over their male counterparts is anticipation. At this level, the quality is certainly there but everyone seems half a second off the pace. It was evident early doors, our keeper could have just ran out and scooped up the ball but didn't clock the pass so had to stay on her line and make a save, then almost straight after the ball was going out for a corner which could have been easily prevented had the defender set off in good time. It's like watching people play Pro Evo.

Currently the only sport I can think of that is continuosly compared to the men's game and people talking up mixed games etc but I suspect if a skillful trans player emerges who is in the top speed and strength percentile of the player pool people will be tying themselves in knots over which opinion is corrrect.

Somebody at work said this and we were wondering why. Is it just that last bit of Quality that eludes them, which will come in time, or is it a physical thing whereby it's harder for them because of strength/size to control and do everything else seamlessly?
