If you were falsely accused of something you're potentially faced with lengthy legal proceedings, reputation damage, effects on your job, etc, etc, etc, and even if you are found not guilty, plenty of people will still think you did it anyway and a lot of that damage will never be repaired. Or you can pay an amount of money which will have no effect on your life to hopefully make it all just go away.

When it's not you, it's easy to sit there and say "I would want to clear my name" but I suspect the reality is a lot of people would take option 2 when it came to it.
