It should be the furthest mark you can make that counts, rather than the behind-most. The Superman technique would win out.
I don't really understand how he's done that, has he somehow tripped on take-off whilst airborne?
If his hamstring has popped he's probably seized on the jump which leads to that awkward front flop.
The pole in the climbing a second ago was unreal. Just incredible speed.
Was that skater not supposed to secure Gold? Fuck off back to America.

Somewhere in the remote Siberian village of Mikhailovka there's a couple of dons lolling at a bunch of gammons who don't find the idea of this geezer competing in the women's weightlifting event mental. Regardless of having worked her/zir/eir/vis bollocks off to get there.

On the horsey stuff I find the horse/rider divide interesting.
In 'eventing' we care about the rider but in racing it's all about the horse, is that a class divide do we think? Upper class horse stuff it's about the rider but for the proles getting rinsed by the bookies it's just about the horse. Point to point might have to be the exception that proves the rule.

The random Spanish lad won because he came first in the speed section, which was a knockout bracket in which he faced the worst speed climber, and two opponents who fell off or false started. He recorded the fifth fastest speed time. He was the worst of the lot over the two other disciplines. Speed shouldn't even be in the combined event.
-james-

Why do they call it 'sport climbing'? Is other climbing not a sport?
The names don't make much sense. Sport climbing is generally a broad term used to refer to non-competitive climbing done outdoors with ropes and fixed anchors (there are many sub-categories).
I don't know why it's called that but in any case it's not the same as what goes on in indoor competitions such as this Olympic one.

In most new events (I only know about this from golf) they only get given 2 medals (one for each gender) as a probation run and they just get told to make the best of it. Presumably the climbing authorities thought they had to showcase themselves in a certain way in order to get established and be given more medals in the future. I know in the case of golf that is why they basically use the most boring, safe format available.
All these weird mixed relays in various sports seem to be a way of gerrymandering gender equality in terms of participants.

Yeah it makes sense that the IOC wanted to get speed involved because it's pretty eye-catching and accessible. Nobody within climbing likes the combined format but I don't see what else they could've done. The decision to make the speed component of the combined final as high variance as possible is pretty baffling though.
Speed gets its own medal in Paris, 'how. They'll probably want to separate lead and boulder further down the line as well.

Karate and baseball have been given the chop for Paris. Presumably pétanque and pelota are in.

Don't think a good cue action helps you get out of Colditz.
Athletics, swimming, gymnastics, shooting, archery, martial arts, boxing, triathlon all stay. Equestrian - we'll keep cross country and showjumping, but I think a round of dressage is likely to slow you down.
Your rule keeps horsing in and is therefore incorrect.
It's also basically how that fella claims he invented modern pentathlon.
If we're going to base this on film/literature scenarios it should be the works of Arnold Schwarzenegger, in which case horsing would have to include an event for a man on a horse chasing a man on a motorbike, including the bit in the lift.

Snooker would be a good Olympic sport, to be fair. What would you have, a 32 man knockout with max 3 per country. Using the world rankings that gets me to:
Trump, Selby, O'Sullivan (GB)
Robertson (Aus)
Ding, Yan, Zhou (China)
Un-Nooh, Saengkham, Akani (Thailand)
Doherty, O'Brien, Hill (Ireland)
And then qualifiers from Switzerland, Iran, Belgium, Jamaica, Germany, Pakistan, Ukraine, Hong Kong, Brazil, Norway, Finland... that's as international as half the sports on there. Bit top-heavy, but there are about 8 sports that China win without even trying, so who cares.
You were saying the other about people looking miserable because they "only" get a silver. Do you really want Ronnie O'Sullivan moping about with a gold like a cunt, bitching about how nobody's as good as him?
Dave.

Yeah, that was pretty funny. Go long! Daft Aussie looking the wrong way set it up for him.
Did he just lose his bearings and not realise how far back he was to Kenny?
Talk about stealing a march.

I've enjoyed the Olympics a lot. The one event that absolutely needs to go in its current format is the men's football. Get beach soccer or Wembley Doubles in instead.

Can you manage Team GB on FM?
Sir Andy Mahowry

There is no Team GB football so no.
They have women's football on FM now though right? So womens Team GB might be there.

Yep.
Pre-2012 the last time they sent a team was in the 60s (although they did try up until 1972 but couldn't qualify) and they'd just use the England amateur plus a couple of others from the other nations to appease them.

That was my point.
The rule is that you can't follow through with your strikes as they don't want excessive force to be used.
I think the Saudi Arabian lad is really unlucky as I don't think he did follow through, it just looks really bad as his opponent ducked into the kick.

They were good but wrong time zone for us to enjoy it as much as we could. The next two will be better. Fuck Brisbane but I'll be 44 by then.
Didn't take notice of any of it really, largely due to timings and work commitments.
I barely watched any of it. Partly because of the times and partly because the main coverage was garbage.
I also preferred when the BBC just had about 12 channels on the go to show stuff rather than having to red button or check Eurosport or whatever.
Jimmy Floyd
10-08-2021, 01:29 PM
Yes, the beeb coverage being a disgrace was also an issue. I could hardly be described as a wet internationalist, but I don't tune into the Olympics to hear about Lisa Bumcheeks-Jackson coming 14th in whatever event and her Great British Backstory, I just want to watch the sport.
In the end I just found leaving Eurosport on and accepting whatever they showed me was the best way.
They had a cracking selection of BLMs [and Nihal] tho tbf to them.
I reckon of all the times I turned on the main BBC broadcoast for it when I got up in the morning I happened to turn on when there was sport on about 10% of the time. The rest of the time it was Hazel Irvine asking somebody who won a medal for us previously how [new bronze medal winner for TEAM GB] "must be feeling right now."

Lutalo's voice had a soothing quality. Shame he is expert in a pointless Korean sport.
The coverage in the US was absolutely disgusting. 90% ads, 5% stupid commentary, 5% sports. I was hoping for the BBC to show everything, but they disappointed too.
Jimmy Floyd
10-08-2021, 01:56 PM
Whenever I have the misfortune to watch US coverage of any sport (mainly golf, but occasionally others) it is just a complete ad fest. I don't understand it really given how much money there is swilling about over there.

The 7+ plus app down here were doing gods work. All the live international feeds with zero studio time and limited advertising.
Sir Andy Mahowry
11-08-2021, 01:07 AM
Discovery+ here was the same.
Although two of their feeds were direct from Eurosport so had waffle/ads at times.
Not all of the sport had commentary though.
BBC was genuinely horrendous, I really thought they'd do a better job considering most people wouldn't be watching a lot of this Olympics due to the time zone.
Their highlights show was also pretty shit. Mainly focused on stuff they had prioritised in the live broadcasts and again too much studio waffle.

It makes the Olympics so much more accessible for me. I'm sure the studio standard is the same around the world with the low tier hack banter ruining enjoyment for viewers. Don't get me started about the swimming coverage.
Same time zone was probably the only reason I made an effort.

Was impossible to watch anything a Swiss wasn’t competing in here and was impossible to see any clips online because ‘this video cannot be viewed in your country’ so outside a couple of gifs I’ve seen nothing.

The BBC forgo rights on this which is why there was more bluster and less action.
The CBC coverage was fine. They (Canada's beeb equivalent) broadcast the Olympics 23 hours a day, stopping only for the nightly news at six and Coronation Street at six-thirty.
There is a lot of waffle on the main channel about Stevie Saskatoon and his Great Canadian Story (he, like Lisa, ends up disappointing the nation and finishing 7th in the heats of the men's 750m dog paddle), but they've got *everything else* streaming online, lots of it without commentary as well.

A Paralympian was three minutes late to the shot put and he was told it was ok as he had a valid reason. He then sets a WR and wins gold but they've now stripped his medal as they don't think the reason for his lateness was valid.

There was a lad in my form with cerebral palsy, 'Adam Cripple', and he was always late for lessons because some woman had to wheel him around. Years later I saw him shuffling around the university with sticks, so I think they're right to be wary of these people.

Presumably as our Great British girls and boys don't cheat, there must have been some sort of mistake. Twice.
A couple of ex-rugby league players who were banned for drugs have come out recently and said that loads of people were at it, and that they essentially only did it to compete and get the same opportunities, and the whole sport has mobilised to paint them as a pair of bitter wankers. I mean they are, but that doesn't mean they're making it up.

They're all probably asthmatic.
Presumably CJ Ujah's grandad is too old/dead to have mixed up his growth hormone [or whatever it was he was taking].
I saw that Rugby League thing too. It's obviously absolutely rife in the 'bulk up' sports.
