View Full Version : June: Boring, modern-day football to resume

Sadly we can't just live on 90s football nostalgia forever and we have to return to the modern game.

Some leagues have already resumed and in England we're getting the Premier League back from the 17th and the Championship on the 20th.

Honestly I haven't really missed football that much as it turns out. The lack of international tournament is far more of a loss to me than just binning football off until August would have been. Although some of my lack of enthusiasm for it being BACK might just be because crowdless sport is shit.

It's definitely down to the lack of crowds for me. I can't get too excited when each game feels like a glorified training session.

The whole act of a day out at the football, or watching an important late-season game with a big crowd is what I've missed a lot. It is going to feel fairly hollow finishing the season off without a crowd whatsoever, not that I disagree with getting the season fully completed.

Jimmy Floyd

Haven't missed it at all, and don't really give a shit what happens in it until we're back onto at least a semi-normal calendar with crowds. If Chelsea win the FA Cup at an empty Wembley, is it a valid trophy? I don't think so.

If anything, the aspect of football I have missed the most has been getting to watch the morning Sunday league games in the park that my flat overlooks. Weird, but true.

Biggest question is how this is going to shake out in fantasy terms. At the moment it looks like you can completely re-select your team as if the season hadn't started yet ( I don't know when this changed as it was a normal transfer thing last time I looked but maybe going past gameweek 38 has changed that) and it seems there's going to be a double gameweek to start things off with those catch-up games.

I watched Gascoigne on Netflix last night. It spent about an hour on Italia 90 and then like 14 seconds on Euro 96. Lucky I’d already had my Euro 96 fix thanks to ITV!

He really is a national treasure. :)

I hope League One votes to end it now, if a global virus is going to stop our best season in forever it can at least do us the favour of not resuming and going on a huge losing streak.

Jimmy Floyd

Was this the one where you were going to break the spell of not finishing top 6 in any league since the Saxon invasion? Or did you do that in League Two?

I've missed playing a bit more recently than watching. I was enjoying united's europa run but that's pretty much dead now if you have no chance of going to a fixture. United are pretty much full strength which is a perk of the lockdown with the ghost of Pogba returning and Rashford back from injury.

but meh.

We managed that in League 2 yeah, although we did our very best to get into the playoffs in 7th just to keep that run going.

There are all sorts of rumours going around, but I can't see any situation where you don't go up, barring the season actually resuming and you messing it up somehow. Rotherham is a bit different as it's a toss of a coin between about eight clubs as to who was second at the time, and it happened to be them.

I still think it'll be decoded on points per game after the majority vote on not restarting the season. It's not really fair, but what is?

The issue which might arise is someone like Wycombe voting to end the season, then jumping four places into the play offs, and then they get to play in the play offs. That's just wrong.

Absolute farce from Sunderland's owners again with regards season ticket holders. If anyone has renewed or renews their season ticket for next season and the games only go ahead behind closed doors, they won't offer refunds. Rather, they'll offer a 'free' streaming service for home games. That's regardless of whether you've bought multiple season tickets for one household. No proportional refunds, incentives or anything. Ł20 a game for a shitty League One stream for me, and much more for many others.

They've also assured us that if we don't renew, our seats will remain reserved until further notice, and nobody will lose their loyalty points either. Whilst this is positive, in doing so they're actively discouraging people from renewing or buying season tickets.

I am 98% sure it would decrease matchday crowds, and also put off the masses of precious casual fans who want an appointment to view rather than having to look up when a game is happening.

I can't think of anyone who would stand to benefit other than gamblers and gambling firms (and, therefore, match fixers).

I can't think of anyone who would stand to benefit other than gamblers and gambling firms (and, therefore, match fixers).

It doubt it would decrease matchday crowds at the big ticket locations, and (of course) they are all that really matter. Most 'big team' games aren't at a regular time anyway though, I suppose.

Don't see how it would impact on the casual tv viewer, or the fan of monday night football (in isolation), if such a thing exists. Those appointments to view would still exist, and be supplemented thricefold. Unless you mean casual match day attendee. Does such a thing exist in the premier league? Do people really want to throw Ł50 in the bin every week for something they're not all that interested in?

Div 1 down would obviously remain the same. It could be their USP.

Newcastle 1-1 Newcastle

Joelinton scoring for the away kit in a very Joelinton fashion. Confidently striding towards the box before his shot was saved. A cross then came in and he bundled it in from 3 yards with very little idea of how it got there. At the other end, Bentaleb lashed home an cracking equaliser from range.

In news that nobody else will care about (except the Coventry and Southend fans on here maybe), the EFL have confirmed that four clubs from League One have had their players and club staff tested, which can only mean that the season is going to be ended and the play offs will take place.

Wycombe (my new favourite club it seems) have voted to end the season, which will see them jump four places into the play offs, and then allow them to compete in the play offs. Quite how anyone with half a brain is allowing this to happen is anyone's guess. Truly baffling.

What makes it even more ironic is that Wycombe's game in hand was away to leaders Coventry, and Wycombe's away form was wretched. It sounds like Peterborough will be the team to miss out on the play offs rather than Portsmouth.

Par league weighting.

There's a points per game weighted scenario, though I'm not sure it's much (if any) fairer. That would actually see Peterborough make the playoffs and Portsmouth miss out.

There's Shindig's option of playing the games in hand, or you could even take off the extra games teams have played so that everyone has played the same amount.

There's a number of options. Simple points per game doesn't take into account who teams have played and who they have left. There's even the issue with Bolton and how for the first couple of months teams were playing against their youth side.

It's a mess.

The one suggestion for League One that would have fucked us completely was put forward by Ipswich, to take the table at the point where everyone had played half their games and use that. This still ignores that not every team has played each other once by the halfway point but does neatly fall before the point Ipswich shat themselves and started freefalling into mid-table.

If you apply the same rules to everyone then it is fair. Anyone whinging can fuck off, these are not normal times.

What same rules? There are different rules being applied in each league.

'These are not normal times' doesn't meant that all logic suddenly goes out of the window.

That's a new one for me. Another proposal was that Coventry should be automatically promoted, and the teams in 2nd-9th (ie those separated by just a few points) play in two separate playoff events, so two teams go up through the playoffs.

wullie
08-06-2020, 04:14 PM
I thought that was the most likely to be approved mostly because it went some way to appeasing the teams that put out the statement to crack on, surprised the EFL stood firm but then they have been entertaining suggestions to be presented tomorrow so who knows? I just find it hard to believe that we're in an almost unassailable position considering we started the season unable to beat a Bolton team with an average age of 14.

ScousePig
08-06-2020, 04:18 PM
It won't be null and void, so I can't see any situation whereby Coventry aren't promoted. Rotherham have got lucky, and the four in the playoffs will probably have mixed feelings. Fleetwood were flying and looked strong contenders for finishing 2nd, and Oxford had seemed to hit form again at the right time. Supposedly both of those had voted to try and finish the season.

Ipswich have form for this. I'm sure I remember my Dad said it was them that got the away goals rule scrapped for either the play-offs or league cup after West Brom knocked them out via that rule. Their chairman was quite high up in the FA iirc.

A couple of pieces on the League One issue:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/52836189

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.coventrytelegraph.net/sport/football/football-news/league-one-vote-promotion-city-18309087.amp

The Coventry article above breaks down who is likely to vote for what. Assuming the three 'undecided' clubs vote for what's in their best interests, that will likely leave the vote at 12-11 in favour of ending the season. If EFL needed clarification that letting the clubs decide on what to do was a stupid idea, then there it is.

The BBC article outlines some of the possible scenarios that clubs have mooted. People wouldn't have nearly as much of an issue if the EFL actually just used a bit of common sense. Instead, they seem to be doing everything they can to fuck the situation up.

The meeting is underway
The meeting and subsequent will take place over a virtual platform, and will begin at 10:30am.
EFL chair Rick Parry is set to lead the conversation, with representatives from each EFL club offered the chance to attend. For Sunderland, that is likely to be chief executive Jim Rodwell.
However, a number of clubs are not expected to join the meeting and will instead vote via proxy.

What are clubs voting on?
There could be as many as three rounds of voting taking place on Tuesday, with EFL clubs set to vote on a string of proposals and amendments.
Here’s each round explained in detail:

Vote 1

The first vote will see clubs decide the framework upon which seasons will be decided if they are curtailed.
Here, clubs will vote on the EFL’s own proposal which would see standings, plus promotion and relegation, decided on an unweighted points-per-game basis. The play-offs in each division will take place as usual and should not be extended.

Vote 2...

Once the proposal mentioned above is passed, as is widely expected, clubs can then vote on a number of potential amendments to the chosen framework. These are:
- The Barnsley Proposal – No club should be relegated in a division that fails to fulfill its fixtures.
- The Tranmere Proposal – Tables will be decided on unweighted points-per-game but with a ‘margin for error’ formula applied. Clubs will then be given a ‘Final Points Range’ which would determine whether they are promoted, relegated or take part in an extended play-off competition.
- The Lincoln City amendment – Any points deductions awarded to clubs will be deducted after the points-per-game calculation is made, rather than applied as part of the calculation.
- The Stevenage amendment – No club should be relegated from League Two if clubs opt to curtail the fourth tier season.
- The Ipswich amendment – Should the League One season be ended, clubs should be able to vote on alternative play-off options.

Vote 3...
After a framework is established for finishing the season, individual leagues can hold a vote to determine whether their seasons are curtailed or continued.
In League One, it is widely expected that the season will be finished.
This vote may take place on Tuesday, but could take place later in the week if clubs wish to take stock of the finalised framework before casting their vote.
League Two, of course, have already voted to curtail their season while the Championship are preparing for a June 20 restart.

Exciting times.

The original PPG and 4-team playoff EFL plan has been agreed to now, bizarrely quickly considering how long these all tend to drag on.

Am I to guess (though a couple are obviously so) that all of these amendments are proposed from a position of complete self-interest?

The Tranmere one appears to be particularly absurd. 'We're relegated, but not by as much as Southend are, so...'

And I'm going to take a wild guess that Lincoln have dropped points to Bolton.

On the subject of Mr Rose, I saw the other day that he and his wife were sponsoring/promoting some ladies golf events in the UK, which all seemed very laudable, but when I saw the total prize pot that he'd chipped in was something like Ł30,000 it did strike me as a bit cheap for someone who must be worth many tens of millions.

Premier League players will wear the words “Black Lives Matter” on the back of their shirts in the opening round of fixtures upon next week’s restart. The slogan will replace the *footballers’ surnames in one of *several initiatives marking recent events agreed by the clubs at a meeting on Thursday, which also include a minute’s silence to *honour those who have died as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

That's a nice initiative. Especially in a round with a fixture between two sides advertising the state airlines of a country that... This is why they should stay out of this stuff.

Oh, aye. Covidlive's showing that there's bugger all hitting the north. As soon as I sort myself a mask, I'll be seeing the folks.

I made one post over the course of two games today and about 5 yesterday.

And no one on TTH has ever posted about a game of football before.

Mahow mate, if there's one thing I can back you on, it's supporting Eastern European whores' households. But if there's a second thing, it's not standing down in the face of people who discourage posting. That has to be the most disgusting act one can do on here. Keep posting and if any of these cunts are mean again send then my way.

So long as we keep you and your backpack 500-600m away then he may fight his own battles.

The stupid Sky advert calling Sheffield United 'Sheff Yoo' is really pissing me off.

La Liga over the weekend has been great. Bundesliga really is agricultural in comparison. Messi looks an absolute dweeb again though now sans facial hair.

Couldn’t be more wrong. You got the leagues switched, and Messi looks far better without a beard as most (European-faced) people do

Save the players and just play it all out on FIFA.

I really thought I'd be able to enjoy my life a bit more before having to wage the war against technology but alas, the norms are shifting at an alarming rate.

It's suddenly unacceptable that Rondon is in China and we'll never get to see him lumbering off the bench to the sound of The Crystals.

With the notable exception of Embolo, who has looked like he won a raffle.
