The semis definitely. If you get to a final and lose at least you can say you got to a final, losing in the semis after being 5-0 up is good enough for me.

It's alright, my cursory research into the subject informs me that instead of doing the fasting yourself, you can feed 60 poor people every day for 30 days instead, so happy meals on Mo for a month (he could give them to the boys from Accrington Stanley).

Elsewhere, at the United Player of the Year knees-up, Mourinho appears to have invented his own little 'Manager's Player of the Year' award (complete with crap little trophy) and given it to Scott McTominay. I bet Paulp Ogba is sacking his agent as we speak.

Oh, and the sport needs a clock that stops when the ball is out of play. There can be no argument against it.

mugbull
01-05-2018, 10:05 PM
Well, given that an average game actually only lasts about 60-70 minutes with the ball in play, it would be the case that a 90 minutes of in-play football would make every game into an extra-time game and players would be dying left right and center. You'd eventually reach an equilibrium in tactics where everything would move much more slowly on the pitch so that the players could conserve energy. Not sure thats worth getting rid of some time wasting

Oh, and the sport needs a clock that stops when the ball is out of play. There can be no argument against it.

Continuous game, continuous clock. It'll turn into a 4 hour NFL nightmare if you let them take time off. Advert timeouts, water breaks, managers setting up set pieces for two minutes, you name it.

They'll introduce those things anyway if they really want to.

Have a timer in the stadium that goes up when the ball isn't in play and have it count down after 90, I don't care. Too often the end of a good game is ruined by this shit.

niko_cee
02-05-2018, 08:55 AM
I sort of understand where you are coming from re: added time but having a definitive end point (which a countdown clock would provide) would just make the game more anti-climactic - in the same way NFL games can just peter out when the clock is running down. That feeling of 'blow the whistle ref!' is a great thing about football.

Also, I reckon the idea of loads of time being lost to the ball being out of play is a bit of a red herring, akin to how it feels better to be driving a longer way around than be stuck in traffic (even if both methods reach the destination at the same time).

I think you could allow play to continue after full time, until it goes out + one extra set piece. You'd lose that particular shout from the crowd, yes, and I suspect the final minute or two might turn into a basketball style affair trying to get it downfield, but I think I could tolerate that. I reckon there was about 5 minutes of actual football in the last 15 last night.

What they could actually do is be a little more strict on Time wasting, and dish out post-game warnings for it as well the way they might do with Diving these days.

I would love to see someone get a second Yellow card for time-wasting twice. Whenever a keeper gets a yellow, they always take another minute after that knowing they won't get another Yellow just like that.

Just have (and enforce) a five second limit for putting the ball back into play. Took too long? Change of possession. If the GK takes too long, penalty kick.

As for faking injuries, whoever needs the little cart to come in needs to take a five minute timeout. If they are really injured then that gives them time to recover. If they are faking it, then they leave their team with one player less for a small period of time.

Or just leave things as they are.

Super idea - kick your opponents and play against 10 men for 5 minutes.

Pepe

There is already a rule to cure that. If you kick your opponents you get booked.

SvN
02-05-2018, 03:24 PM
5 minutes left, a goal down. I'm sure players would take a booking to play against 10 men for the remainder of the game. Fuck it, let's have 4 players booked and play against 7!

You absolute mentalist.

Pepe
02-05-2018, 03:31 PM
I think you overestimate the number of tackles that lead to genuine injuries. To ensure that an injury would disable a rival player, the risk of getting a red card would be extremely high. Might prove entertaining.

Mike
02-05-2018, 03:46 PM
Super idea - kick your opponents and play against 10 men for 5 minutes.

Just make whoever commits the foul go off with him for 5 minutes too.

Though then you'll get players faking injury to have the other teams best player off for 5 minutes.

Just have to keep it how it is.

Disco

None of these things would work for two reasons that are never likely to change. Players/teams cannot be trusted not to waste time (the best way of 'gaming' the clock with the current rules); and the governing bodies are all completely spineless so any new regulations will never be enforced.

The final should be fun. Arnold looked shambolic tonight. If Liverpool can hold it together at the back they'll win it.

He’s proven shambolic quite regularly this season. Good on the ball, technique-wise, but seriously lacking in positional sense. He’s often a yard or two ahead of where he should be and does a lot of ball watching.

The right side of our defence is comical.

Andy Robertson was shades of Bale vs Maicon tonight. Him vs Lucas Vazquez RB should be a laugh.

I kinda feel like (aside from Ronaldo turning up and destroying everyone) the fullbacks are gonna be the most interesting part. Something like:

Marcelo vs. Salah
Mane vs. whatever random Real find down the back of the sofa to play there

and

Bale vs. Robertson
Ronaldo vs. T A-A

Yet he was excellent against City. He seems very up and down, but I think that is not helped by having Lovren there as well. Positioning comes with age and experience and Lovren needs to speak to him more to get him into the right positions. The centre-halves can see the whole picture and they should dictate what the full-backs do. Plus from what I know he played as a central midfielder for quite a while when he was younger(hence the excellent technique).

Lovren seemed to get off quite lightly for the second goal as well as the commentators rounded on Karius but what on earth he was doing just backing off literally to the penalty spot I have no idea.

Liverpool aren't going to beat Real Madrid by being defensively solid, they might as well double down and try to score nine.

niko_cee
03-05-2018, 04:42 PM
There's no way on earth Alexander-Arnold does't start the final unless he is injured. I'd be amazed if there are any changes. Midfield is the problem if they let the game get stretched like it was yesterday, but that was probably more situational, with Roma committing a lot of men forward and Liverpool basically leaving three up and not asking them to track back at all to try and get what would have been the absolutely decisive third goal. That sort of way of playing is a bit of an achilles heel for Liverpool as they are unable to not just attack and get embroiled in an end-t-end slugfest, but I don't know if you can really play like that in a game when you aren't heavily behind.

The question isn't whether Liverpool can be solid defensively, more can Real shit one out that way as it's a good way to go against Liverpool? I have my doubts that they can or will set up like that.

The politics of Real Madrid turned him. Like the politics of not having literally love him and his personality turned him into the angry, jaded individual we see today. Any shred of humanity he had went out the window there and he's never been the same since.

To put it in Star Wars terms, he always admired the Rebels but they rejected him and the dark side embraced him, changing him forever.
