Single garages attached to houses are categorically not for cars.
Need at least a double with an automatic door to even think about putting a vehicle in there.
Boydy

I have a garage but this house was built in the 50s for much smaller cars so you'd have trouble getting a modern car into the garage past the corner of the house. And then have trouble getting out of your car once it's in the garage.
The driveway is shared with nextdoor too (some of them have fences down the middle but ours doesn't) and it's too narrow for two modern cars together. Doesn't help my nextdoor neighbour drives a big SUV thing but he's lived here for decades and he's a nice old fella so I don't kick up a fuss.

Should have petrol bombed it.
Two of my three cars are in the garage. The truck lives outside. It wouldn't fit inside the garage, I think.

A nespresso machine.
An air fryer.
A standing desk.
An under-desk treadmill.
I am going to be so fucking healthy and productive this year.
These aren't actually new year things, I'd been planning on getting them all for a while. I'm just taking advantage of the "sales" to get them now. Plus, stuff arriving is something to look forward to in this bleak month.

I'd assumed an under the desk treadmill was one that you could use like a normal one (albeit obviously a bit crap compared) that folded away neatly under a desk. If it's something else I think I'm out.
Nothing on you, I just didn't know they existed. I don't like standing desks let alone treadmills but I can see the logic to both. Hopefully AI-fuelled redundancies will come before you hit your weight targets.

That treadmill setup is a bit too close to dystopian sci-fi scenarios for my liking. I'd be quite up for being on a call with someone who was also doing it and we could pretend we're in the West Wing.
Seems like a great way to not get any meaningful work done and not get any meaningful exercise done simultaneously.

I get fuck all steps in when working from home though (I wfh 99% of the time). I started tracking it for a while to see how bad it was and it could easily be less than 1000. I started making a conscious effort to hit 5000 a day (not much I know but at least it's something and it's enough for a health boost (https://www.bbc.com/news/health-66440424)).
I do weights most days at lunchtime and then getting the steps in takes up time in the evening. Walking and then cooking and eating dinner and showering will end up taking about two hours out of my evening. If I can get my steps in while working and save some of that evening time, it'll be worth it to me.
What is ocurring in those critical evening time hours that has you contemplating safeguarding it all by simultaneously pissing on yourself with your Huel urea whilst walking on a treadmill staring into a spreadsheet?
Boydy
02-01-2024, 04:18 PM
Not much at the minute, that's the point. I probably need to find more social activities to do given the working from home. Or maybe I'll just go to bed earlier and get better sleep instead of staying up too late because I'll have had enough "me time" earlier in the evening. Or maybe I'll walk in the evening too and get even more steps in. Who knows, the possibilities are endless.

Not going to happen. I'm not an early riser. Nor could I run for 40 minutes at the minute either.

It's time for the TV/Broadband to be redone as the contract is up next month. Currently paying an £80 a month(went up to 95 due to the O2 SIM) contract. For that I get the full works with Virgin. 1gig speeds, Sky Sports, TNT Sports, Sky Cinema, a Netflix standard account and an O2 sim with unlimited everything on.
I would ideally like to keep the Sports and something 500mg+ speed wise. Cinema and other TV channels no longer get used with Disney+, Netflix and me just being able to download movies.
Skys internet offering seems better(500mb for £32/m), however to add sports on, you also have to have the entertainment package first, which immediately increases the price by £46/m. Already we're at nearly the same price for what I've got now.
BT, even though I'm sure Sky piggyback their service, have said I can only get non-fibre internet here.
We did have a leaflet through the door the other week with a company offering us silly speeds(several times faster than my current) but I can't remember who they are.
It might have to be the old ring up and cancel expecting retentions to call be back with a good offer.

My Sky internet is fast but has died for a few hours at a time multiple times and their customer service is pretty poor.
There’s only Virgin and BT. Everyone else piggybacks off BT.
The o2/virgin Volt thingy where you internet gets upped to the next fastest and your mobile data gets doubled makes me feel a bit trapped with them.

I did this last time. I was paying £89 originally and it was due to increase to some £140. A call to customer services told me that a deal for £105 was the absolute best they could offer(the advisor had 'run out' of better deals. I lolled at it and said no thanks and called back the next day to be told £110 was the best offer. Questioned how it was that someone offered me a better deal the day before and they told me they get so many deals they can offer out per day from their manager. Even pointed out the same package was still the same £89 I was paying on their site. They gave me the whole sorry you're not a new customer bit, so I also went through to cancel.
The guy at cancellations offered £95 for it. I said no thanks, I'm still going. Got a call maybe 2 days later to offer me it all for £80, with them bumping my internet up to 1gb and I went yeah alright then.
Yeah, I’d just get internet and dodgy tv.
Currently on the hunt for a new hoover, trip to curry’s wasn’t helpful. The Samsung ones seem good but the way you empty is a faff. Held the £750 Dyson laughed and put it back.

They gave me the TNT is an extra £18 per month shtick too. First woman at retentions I spoke to could only give me my same package again for £132 a month apparently. I lolled that off and she immediately sent me to cancellations. This woman told me I could have the same package minus TNT for £91 a month. I said while I appreciate that's a decent come down from previous, that's still some near £30 a month more than I pay now. It is the same offer that is available to new customers, but new customers also get £250 bill credit or a 43" TV.
In reality, a decent broadband connection is all I myself really need, but for the ease of use for the kids/Mrs, having sports channels would be grand. I told her to cancel and she did immediately. They noticeably put up a lot less of a fight this time compared to last.
Though last time I was a little screwed for choice if they didn't give me the call back, this time I'm not so bad. I look forward to see what they can offer me if they do call.
Lofty
09-02-2024, 03:47 PM
I looked around and the best offer I could find in my area was Sky 500mb broadband for £33 a month, nothing else. Retentions came back and offered me 1gb broadband, full tv package including Sky and TNT sports, cinema, on demand premium sky stuff, Netflix and the Volt benefit to my O2 phone contract of £10 off my phone bill a month, for £65.
So I reckon if you call the phone bill and Netflix stuff £20 a month on their own then it's essentially £45 a month for broadband that is twice as fast as sky with all the TV channels.
They might call you tomorrow, they rang me about 6 on a Saturday.

I'm lucky I can get skys(BT) fastest package here too so I can just call them on it if it doesn't go well. I don't even mind cutting the speed down because 500mb is fast enough for anyone anyway really.

020 3980 4396 was the retentions number that they used to call me.
Job done. Called me back and offered me my same package again for £86/m, but if I dropped only the internet down to 500mb it's £55/m. If I dropped TNT sports too it would have gone to £47. We have a 2nd box upstairs which is why my offer is slightly different to yours, but I've kept TNT for now.
Saves the faff of BT having to come out and fit the line to ours too.
It was due to go up to £136/m. The exact package we have is currently £113/m to take out if I were a new customer, though I would get the new TV/bill credit to bring that down a little. That'd rise to £172/m after 18 months too.
That they're freely able to chuck it me for £55/m, with me not even really bothering to haggle further, shows how much pure profit they must be making of some people.

"Sorry teacher, my child won't be reading any of the e-books they've been asked to read as part of their homework unless you walk your arse to Waterstones".
It's 2024 Igor. Even if technology does have its downsides - and it definitely does - it is a part of everything. And no, if you were a parent you wouldn't stop your kids from being like all the other kids. Firstly, you aren't morse stubborn than a hard-done-by 5 year old and secondly, you don't want them to get bullied. Stop talking out of your fanny lad.
My 6 year old son doesn’t have his own tablet and won’t for along time. Yev is absolutely right about the downsides of it. We have an old iPad that he and I look at Lego sets and watch football highlights on, and he uses that for his numeracy education games too. We’ll probably let him use it more gradually as he gets older. I also plan to put him on my laptop with a mouse connected so he’s at least vaguely familiar with that setup for school / work purposes.
You don’t have to give them something just because their friends have it. Just be consistent and don’t sit staring at your own device while they silently beg for your attention every night.
Not boasting but my kid can sit perfectly well while out for dinner without requiring tv or a game on a phone or tablet. It can be done but once you let the genie(s) out of the bottle it’s very hard to put them back in.

Yeah look, the kids who weren't allowed to watch telly until they were 16 etc were obviously viewed with significant suspicion and definitely got bullied for it, and I definitely think some parents have a naivety that they can basically insulate their kids from the outside world (or at least think they can without turning them into weirdos) but I'm not having that they'd be bullied by other 5 year olds for not having an iPad, and even more dubious that you can't just say no without it causing some kind of meltdown.

CJ is bang on. My 4.5 year old uses my wife's iPad for homework and that's it, and he doesn't even ask to use it otherwise.
One of my friends has a 5 year old that sits glued to his tablet the instant he gets home from school until he goes to bed. Because actually interacting with them/parenting is too much effort, clearly. Borderline child abuse.

I'm not saying they would be, and similarly to everyone else, mine barely use our tablet or laptop. My 8 year old does for homework and my 5 year old does if we're in the car / waiting room / all inclusive hotel restaurant disasterclass. Because it keeps his arse in his seat, rather than him getting on everyone's (read: my) nerves.
Then there's my nephew, who is autistic and can't function if there's anything outside of the norm going on, unless he has his headphones and Skibbiditoilet - or whatever he is obsessing over this month - on Youtube.
You can't apply a one size fits all rule to this shit. And if you did try to stop them having any exposure to it at all, the bullying would start at some point. 8? 9? 10? I don't know. But it would. Then there's the competitive nature of the school-mums, where "my timmy isn't allowed an iPad" would smash, in true culture war style, into "oh... My Kian-Ian and Tyler-Tyler have the latest iPads, and they just love their Gucci cases. It's educational, they have apps for...".
It's a mine field.

My nephew mostly uses his tablet for car rides. If we're visiting my mam and dad, he's not touching that until he's back in the car.
And yes, kids are cunts. It's a universal fact and it takes years to sort that.

I think my Sister and Brother-in-law are a good test case for this stuff. He's old school and thinks kids should be outside at all times, falling off their bikes and getting covered in shit, whereas my Sister is less bothered but I think sees the merit in that. As a result they held off for as long as they could from the kids having all of the screens, then when they first got them they had them in the communal areas of the house, but my nephew and niece are now 14 and 12 respectively and not only has the horse bolted, it's completely vanished, possibly in a Findus lasagne somewhere.
Thankfully they both seem reasonably well adjusted - she's very confident, he's incredibly bright, so all in all it looks like job partway done and bullet dodged to this point, but one thing I learnt from observing all this unfold over the last decade and a half is that unless you're going to die on that hill as a parent and accept all manner of unintended consequences (some of which Spikey has mentioned), while being seen as an absolute weirdo by your own kids and all of their friends, there simply comes a time when you can no longer fight it.

I don't recall people getting 'bullied' for trivial things at my school. People got bullied for smelling like shit or coming out as gay, but having your brother's old trainers wasn't going to get you any sustained grief.

Fuck me did you go to private school or something?
Just a couple of the tamer things from my school. There was a girl who got off with a lad and supposedly when he felt her top half a cut up tennis ball fell out. She was then called ‘tennis ball tits’ for the last three years or school. Even to this day if I go to my mates about her first thing that gets bought up is that.
Second a couple of twins who had coats which had 4 stripes on them rather than being Adidas. Again they got absolutely buried as the ‘four stripe twins’ for the rest of school.
That’s then without delving into all the normal shit that used to happen with bullying.

I'm not saying nobody ever got stick for things, but bullying, as in targeted and sustained abuse, wasn't that common. Somebody would notice your crap PE kit and lol about it at the time, but everything and anything wasn't long-term bullying material.
Yeah, I also can't think of anyone who has legit bullied in the multiple schools I attended. Everyone was laughed at at some point for the most stupid of shit, but unless you were a melt, you just got on with your life.
Does that count as bullying?
It didn't used to and rightfully so but very much would now.

Nah you're right. Well, you WOULD get bullied for the tamest random bollocks, but it would more be that someone would get targeted for being a general loser and then would have random reasons applied afterwards. You're not gonna get bullied FOR not having an iPad or whatever, but if you got teased once for it and you gave em a reaction, you'll be billy no iPad for the rest of eternity.

Yeah I guess it's sorta bullying-adjacent. I was particularly thin skinned until I was about 14, especially at junior school, so would often get teased for a lot of stuff, then I just sorta grew a backbone and the first time you go lol fuck off you fat twat to the lad who tried to call your shoes gay they tend to stop pretty quickly, especially if their mates are laughing at them. I do have the privilege of having gone to one of the wussiest grammar schools ever with a particularly lame year group, so getting a kicking was never a risk so you were more empowered to stand up for yourself.
igor_balis
22-04-2024, 08:44 PM
But what I'm getting at is it's fairly futile to just give your kids STUFF to protect from bullying, cus short of really mad shit like not letting your kids watch the Simpsons, even when they're 16 (true story with a couple of the weird Christian kids) or them turning up to school in literally tatty clothing/unshowered, duquan style, kids are largely gonna get bullied or not bullied based on how confident they are, and general social skills n shit I THINK, the other stuff is just incidental ammunition I think. At least in terms of it being sustained.

Hello TTH consumer advice thread.
Our electric hob is fucked and I want to replace it with an induction, but it seems to be impossible to find one that has knobs and not touch controls. I stayed at a place recently that had the touch controls and it was infuriatingly shit. Has anyone got one, is it worth bothering?

Actually there is this but it's setting off my dodgy shite alarm.
I don't see how they can exist, really? It's like analogue versus digital.
Actually, a quick Google tells me I'm talking bollocks. They do exist, but they're not that common because people one of the big benefits to an induction hob (over gas, say) is the ease of cleaning, which is diminished when you introduce physical controls.

Aye we got lucky that I'd just replaced all our pans with Ninja ones and they just so happened to be magnetic, thank god.
The touch controls are a bit of a ballache -james- but so much easier to keep clean.

I don't know if I moaned about it on here at the time, but my wife bought a ridiculously expensive Herman Miller chair last year and then managed to wrongly install the up down thing as there was a tilt bit she missed and it was unbelievably difficult to rectify. Like the internet was recommending taking the whole thing apart difficult. Fortunately with some strategically placed pressure and some small children's hands to reach into the damn thing the situation was retrieved, but you'd think, even though it does come with a quite big warning to follow the ostensibly easy assembly instructions carefully, that they would design it in such a way as to not be instantly fuck-up-able.

First tub came out pretty well, although I didn't check the sides after spinning it up which was a little icy. Should have checked and respun.
It was very nice though especially for a relatively simple recipe.
Almond milk, Greek Yoghurt, a scoop of protein powder and honey. Also used the mix-ins setting to get some of these (https://tonyschocolonely.com/uk/en/our-chocolate/product/littl-bits-milk-marshmallow-biscuit-mix) mixed through.
Going for a base of Chocolate Soya milk, almond milk, peanut butter, protein powder, stevia and arrowroot (to thicken it and create something super creamy, hopefully).
Pretty cool machine and I'm going to have fun creating shit.

I was in East London yesterday and I stopped at a "Jamaican" restaurant for lunch. Now, boss man was clearly African, Ghanaian if I had to guess, but that's unimportant. What is important is the home made Green Chilli Jam he served it up with and the £5 I paid him for a jar of it.
The main ingredient must be meth because I have developed a serious addiction to it and I'm now going to have to book my home visits around when I think it's going to run out.

Guy I know makes em to spec for me, whatever strength I want. There's a couple sites I can link you to though if you're happy to go the delivery route. I did for a while, no issues.
What beard/body trimmers do people have? My Phillips Oneblade has malfunctioned.
Manscaped Lawnmower for downstairs. Wouldn't recommend the brand tbh.

I'm looking into an Xbox Series S for the winter months. Couple of questions. Is 512 GB enough, or would people recommend 1 TB? I can snag a refurbished effort from Microsoft for £210. Is this a good deal, or should I just get a brand new one?

Went to a local running shoe shop today to buy some shoes for walking.
Ended up going for the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 21 after trying on a total of 3 shoes.
They are so comfortable, light and bouncy. Really nice to walk in.

Did they do all of the foot measuring magic and then point you towards the ugliest pair of shoes in the shop?

No magic but they are the pretty damn ugly.
I just told him what I wanted them for and my size then he brought 3 pairs down. Two Brooks (I think the other was the Adrenaline 23) and an Asics.
I did ask for different colours but he said he didn't have any.

On my PS5, i just installed an additonal 1TB hard drive. Before that, I could have three major games on the hard drive such as FIFA, COD and Gran Turismo but then i couldnt install updates when they came out.

Unless you enjoy uninstalling and reinstalling games all the time 512GB is nowhere near enough. The operating system will be a decent chunk of that too.
Is 1TB enough? I might just get a Steam Deck/Nintendo Switch.

Depends entirely on what games you play.
If you play the latest CoD for example that thing is reportedly taking up over 300gb by itself. Most normal games are in the 50gb-100gb range. If you're an indie games fan it's less than that.

Unless you're actually likely to use the switch for portable gaming, it's pointless and an X-Box or PlayStation would be much better.

Had meant to post this a while back, but when we got the new utility room fitted we "upgraded" to a heat pump tumble dryer. Yes they may well use less electricity, but it's because they don't fucking dry anything.

Never even heard of such a thing.
utterly useless is the best i can say. used it 5 times now since i got it, ok, any program that uses the sensor dry sensor is pointless !! one of 2 things happen, either it says its finished after 30 mins and everything is still wet and you have to hit start again, and again, and again, for 3 hours till things are dry, or, it actually carries on cooking your stuff for 5 hours and the counter says 11 mins left, forever !! the whole point of sensor dry is to save energy by switching off when dry, and only when dry. the last load i did i just set it to 60 mins, repeated it till stuff was dry, could of wasted 30 mins of electric, but it was less hassle that way.
