Aye, the disappearance of pool tables from most pubs is a shame. The ones that remain are always fucking shite and charge £1 a game as well. Thankfully we've got a Rileys (well, formerly Rileys, but same kind of set up) with about 10 british pool tables, all well maintained, and it's about £5 an hour per table. There's a £1 supplement for non-members but they only seem to charge that about once in every five times we go, depending on if the person on shift can be arsed.
And I have very limited interest in living in a big house or even owning one, but having room for a pool table is something I'd love as well.
Boydy
22-04-2018, 03:56 PM
I'd fucking love my own pool table.
The best thing about the job I had when I lived in London was the pool table in the office. I got so good (again - I used to be good when I was younger but hadn't played in years) but now I'm probably rusty as shit again.
Lewis

I should be crap at pool, because I am crap at doing what makes up pool, and if you put me against another crap player I will more than likely lose; but I am able to test and even beat objectively superior players because once I go a few down I just slam the balls around as hard as I can and get all sorts of awkward bounces.
Sir Andy Mahowry
22-04-2018, 04:12 PM
I'm fairly shit but I used to think I was class as I would almost always attempt hard shots and now and then they'd obviously come off.
I also liked my breaks (just smash it as hard as I could) but it was probably hurting me if a ball didn't go in.

I used to live near a place with loads of tables in Portadown but the cunts from work always wanted to play snooker instead of pool. Those tables are too big for people of our standard.
A mate and I went into a really shitty old man pub about six months ago and the only other people in the place were two irresponsibly old men and a little spastic bloke sitting talking to the barman. We started playing pool and they all came over to watch. Three games in my mate bounced the black off both knuckles leaving me with an easy finish, and the little spastic shouted 'YASS' as loud as I've ever heard anyone shout. My friend refused to play another game and seethed for about two hours afterwards. He's still furious now any time I bring it up to lol at him.

We used to have a table at my Dad's house but all bar one of the cushions needed replacing. Also had to use child cues in some places as there wasn't enough room but it was brilliant.

That's quality, and I like how easily an image of that pub is conjured up from that little anecdote. I've been in plenty almost identical, I imagine (i was probably the spastic).
I used to play virtually every week for an hour or so from when I was about 11 to 16 and got quite good, then started playing for hours on end in the summer holiday of 2008 when Rileys opened and I got fucking amazing. Then I basically stopped playing for a few years after I discovered girls and booze (not that either particularly liked me back). I played again after I'd had my retina de- and then re-attached, which had fucked up my depth perception, was fucking wank and assumed it had ended my time of being an alright pool player, but obviously looking back I was just proper rusty.
I've started playing again more regularly and I've been getting back to roughly the level I was when I was in my early teens.
I'm quite inconsistent, and really bad at long, straight shots, but I've an uncanny knack of making utterly ridiculous pots - long cuts along the cushion, long plants, cannons and my fave - doubles across the length rather than width of the table.
In a couple of years I'm going to buy a house and I plan to have a table tennis table in one of the rooms. You plebs playing pool need some decorum.

What kind of pool cue? An actual pool cue? Surely, in a Riley's, you'd be better off getting a snooker cue, and playing on the snooker tables. It'd make you a million times better at pool for starters. Long shots you say?

I get Pool in a way that I don’t get Golf or Darts. I think it’s more likeable (to play, anyway) because it’s easy to be/feel relatively good at it. With Darts or Golf I’m well aware that wherever I try to send the thing, it’s going nowhere close. With Pool I am atleast competent purely through having functioning hand - eye coordination.

Yeah an actual pool cue.
After years of intermittently playing pool I've reached a standard that I'll beat pretty much any of my mates 7 or 8 times out of 10, and lose against anyone who is actually good. There's room for becoming "quite good".
I played snooker with my dad every weekend for about 3 months and we stopped because we just had to accept that we were fucking horrendous. It was never an enjoyable experience. If I can find the motivation and enjoyment from playing pool on a very regular basis and I get really good I'll consider giving snooker another go. But probably not.

Still need to put a couple of sets up for sale. I'm going to keep the middling set and the good putter. Could never get used to the expensive Yonex ones that I was given as they've really small head woods and stupid hybrids in it.

You put it towards the outer range (but where you can still get a decent connection). The booster then covers the rest of the house, unless you live in a country manor. For us it covers the whole house so we just connect to the booster no matter where we are.

The first knife I bought is an entry-level Japanese Gyuto/Chef's knife and cost about £80. It is a billion times better than a crappy knife.
I know that's not cheap, but you can use it for 99% of things you need a knife for in the kitchen so I don't think it's a ridiculous amount. Something like that, a cheap sharpening stone (I use this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Japanese-whetstone-Combination-Grit-1000/dp/B001DT1X9O and will continue to use it even if I buy a very expensive knife) and a bit of time on youtube is all you really need. Like I said, I could easily have got by with that one Tojiro knife and the sharpening stone for many years. With a bit of practice I can get it screaming sharp and it can be used for almost everything (it's a bit unwieldy for tiny stuff life garlic but perfectly usable; you would wreck the edge on frozen stuff/bones so that's the one thing I'd definitely avoid).
I really think it's a worthwhile investment for anyone who cooks at all to get one decent chef's knife and a whetstone.

I've often flirted with the idea of buying a really expensive kitchen knife, but I know I wouldn't look after it properly, so I just stick with my crappy knives and this odd tungsten sharpening device an old Australian dude made for me, which sharpens anything to within usable parameters. Realistically they're vanity items for the most part. ONE CLEAN CUT!
Lewis
26-06-2018, 09:51 PM
I was in the York Outlet a few months ago looking at (obviously just looking at) an eight-hundred set of four knives, and the woman, who was either dying of boredom or thought I was one of those people with so much money they can afford to bowl around like a tramp, let me have a go cutting some stuff with them. They were very good at cutting the stuff, but unless you were literally wearing them out every day I think you would be better off just buying cheap ones and chucking them away when they turn shit.
randomlegend
26-06-2018, 09:59 PM
The problem with shit knives is they don't hold an edge. You can sharpen pretty much any old crap until you can shave with it, but it will be blunt again very quickly.
Good knives take a very sharp edge and hold it well. But I agree, once you are comparing a £100 knife to a £500 to a £3000 knife you are not getting something which cuts 5x/30x better. There are definite but relatively modest improvements but yeah it's a vanity project. Probably like with anything really - you see a big improvement from 'cheap' to 'expensive' and then small improvements once you start going onto 'very expensive'.
I don't care though, I like nice knives and I feel like I've earned the right to blow a tonne of money on something unnecessary - just because I want it - after having no money since forever and everything I've been through the last few years.
Probably fucking fail now.

Maybe if he was brandishing one of those at your throat.

You don't brandish those. You invite people around to see them in their case.

They've got fancy wood in the handles but they are at heart just very functional blades.

Bought the cheaper of those two in a complete failure of willpower.
That's knife-buying done for the very foreseeable future.

I'm more interested in where they've chosen to take that picture. On a piece of wood, on top of some random stuff? Outside?

Works in a workshop, finished the knives, took them outside the workshop to photograph them would be my guess.
Looks like they need cleaning.

Got a tasty mic, such clean audio, shame I hate the sound of my own voice.

and a pair of white Supra's that were on sale for 40 quid. Wasn't planning on buying another pair of shoes but Supras are so comfy that at that price I may as well have taken them and it means I can chuck out the older pair I have worn down.

What are you using the mic for?

Mostly just on discord with the boys and a bit of streaming here and there. Then also using it whenever I need to do some voiceover/ADR for video stuff we do at work. A few of the people I play D&D with have considered turning it into a podcast so maybe that. It's OTT for what I need day-to-day but I got myself a Canon EOS 200D recently too so I can basically do A/V freelancing on the side if I want to/need the cash.

I laughed at Giggles' excellent diss even though I do have an almost identical looking pair of nikes.
Reminded me of the absolutely atrocious joke I made at work that somehow got my assistant manager to piss themselves. Some bloke in one of those ubiquitous NASA t shirts was hovering by the entrance, and when they said "wanna see what they want, Igor?", I feigned excitement and said "really?? awesome, I've never served an astronaut before!" Such wit.

I bumped into a camouflaged soldier coming out of the base gym, and, honestly without thinking, said 'Didn't see you there lad'. He called me a prick, and then I realised that I had accidentally donned him senseless.

At 5'12/6'0 that'd be a weird question to ask considering I'd be 7 inches shorter than the average.

Yeah but no-one actually does height in cm apart from european weirdos. It'd be like me saying I'm a size 46, none of you would know what I mean.
