Okay I now own 2% of a horse.

5:35 on Thursday 8th September the fastest horse in the world will descend on Chelmsford racecourse. That’s right, my horse is running a race! (Subject to her continuing to progress over the next two weeks)

Alright dickheads, I've got about £250 to buy a proper office chair, the awful IKEA dining chair was doing my head in too much.

Any recommendations? I can't help but assume a more textured upholstered one would be cosier and comfier, especially if I wanna relax after a day in the office, but if mesh is just objectively better I would go for that.

May be in the market soon for some decent over-ear headphones. ANC isn't all that important to me, more so comfort and sound quality. Is it worth even looking for ~£100?

I picked up some sennheister hd450se on amazon for £75 last week in that prime sale.

Maybe keep an eye on amazon to see if they drop down again (normally £120 or so) as they would probably fit your bill.

They aren’t as good as my Bose quietcomfort 35’s which are just stupidly great, but they were £280 or something.

Every time I do research on headphones I get the impression there are genuinely really good sounding headphones at all price points, but cheap headphones (like sub-£40) don't last very well.

It just takes a bit of scouring wanky audiophile forums to see what's flavour of the month.

Buy one which is being sold second hand from office stock.

Proper office chairs are so expensive and doing the above is a good way to get a good one for a reasonable amount of money. I bought a Steelcase Leap V2 off eBay about ten years ago and it's been absolutely great.

I'm admittedly clueless in the audiophile business, but it does seem like the more you pay = better quality in the ear padding and sound. Good active noise cancellation seems to be another tier of price on top.

Got a 5600x to upgrade my computer for £195. My mate built the computer on the cheap for me, and I expected I might get a fiver and a can of monster from CeX for the crappy old 3200g if I was lucky, and inexplicably it's going for 50-100 on eBay. Not entirely sure why, but I'm not complaining.

Nice. I've got the 5700x and it's a great jump from the 6 year old i7 I had.

The 3200g will still be nicely priced because it's out of production, a very good budget friendly option for an entry level type build and the g means it'll allow for on board graphics if you're in a pinch.

Not working as in not grinding correctly? Did you get the cleaning brushes with it? Sometimes you've got to take the bean canister off and brush out the chute.

Wanky beans tend to fuck it. This might not be true but the only time it happened to us, the Mrs had bought some dross from Aldi to tide us over.

Looking for a basic level smart watch. Something that lets me read notifications with a decent battery life. I'm not overly fussed if I can actually reply on the watch itself/use Google assistant.

There's so many FitBit and almost brandless style clones that go from £40 all the way up to £100+ whilst looking relatively similar, it's hard to know quite what I'm looking at. Does anyone use one?

Procured original halo via the master chief collection and had to order a controller charge dock given the Xbox I ordered inexplicably does not have the charger cable. Who loses that?

Turned the thing on and there’s about a billion updates to go. Plug and play consoles of old, ie the GameCube, we’re so much better for opportune gaming. Turning the thing on when you fancy a half hour and having to wait that time for updates is mental.

So much hassle and I bet you halo turns out to be shit.

Essentially they add into the old shell a nice new OLED screen, update the speaker, give it a rechargeable battery with USB-C connection etc

I was doing this for shamefully long before I realised... Surely you can just put the APK on your phone nowadays.

Been buying a load of old gamecube games recently. Reckon there’s about 450 or so PAL games so might just try and get them all.

Starting with the interesting ones ie the Zelda and Mario ones. Already discovered I have a disc only copy of Mario party 6 I wasn’t aware of and now have duplicate copies of Luigi’s mansion, mario kart, Zelda four swords and Zelda collectors edition.

Hooking up a gamecube proved to be way too difficult so I googled it and have since ordered myself a new cable. I’ve definitely had it set up in the past, but I’ll be damned how I did it.

Mario sunshine you can get for about £15 though, so it’s definitely a bit of finding what’s still kicking about and memorable.

I didn’t even realise twilight princess was released on gamecube and wii, turns out it was. £80 for that one.

For the Gameboy cartridges, they used a small battery on board them to power the ability to hold your save data. Given the games are now 30 years old or so the batteries on them have seen better days. You can swap them yourself or get somewhere else to do it for you, but it's something to be aware of if you plan to play through them.

Sorry I'm late with this lad. With an Xbox controller you can't really use tilt based Wii games. There is workaround where you move tilt etc to sticks but its fucking awful.

You can play Mario Galaxy etc, with right stick for pointer. Paper Mario, New Super Mario Bros all work just set it to pro controller.

There are custom ini files I believe for the PS controller as it has gyro built in. And there's a way to set up your PC to accept Wii controllers via Bluetooth but you may as well just play the Wii at the point.

Warehouse work at one of those big places sounds grim. The warehouse attached to my place is bad enough, it's noticeable how differently they treat the warehouse staff compared to us in the office. Warehouse staff are basically human machines on the minimum wage assumed to be society's lowest form of scum. The only advantage of a smaller place like ours over one of the big corporates is that as long as the value gets packed and shipped, then they're not too intrusive about the minutiae of people's work days.

So after doing some digging on smart watches, it seems almost all of the non/fake branded ones on Amazon are not worth your time. Not exactly surprising but sometimes they can be good finds in other departments.

Most reviewers I've checked up on seem to suggest the Xiaomi Band 7 as the budget option and if you want beyond what that offers, you're better jumping up to the £200 ish options of your named brands. Seems like it makes sense to get one of those, see if I need the extra and then go from there. The 7 is about £40 on Amazon, though the 8 has just released in China and can be Ali Expressed over here for about £30.

Scan them for what? Alcohol related damage? I can tell you for certain they wont let you do it. Despite whatever drug/alcohol policies they may have, any chance you're be dinging staff for it is an issue they wont want to deal with.

Given we've hit payday and am still employed I looked back into a smart watch. I don't want to go absolutely nuts and buy one of the £400+ ones and was looking at around about £200 being my top end.

The main players in this range seem to be Huawei. Their GT range is the one most people will be buying and they've recently released the 4th generation of it. (https://consumer.huawei.com/uk/wearables/watch-gt4/buy/) As it's new they're bundling a set of decent but not amazing wireless buds as a sweetner.
They still have the GT3 (https://consumer.huawei.com/uk/wearables/watch-gt3/buy/) on there. And beyond that there's the GT3 SE (https://consumer.huawei.com/uk/wearables/watch-gt3-se/buy/), which as far as I can tell is the same specs as the GT3, but in a cheaper finish.

The downside of Huawei is that since the 5g mast business, you have to jump through hoops to even get their app as it isn't allowed on our Google store. That also means you're essentially locked to what is on the watch/app when you get it. The positive is that what it does have, it does well and the battery lasts well over a week on a full charge, even with all of your features turned on. It would also work on both Android and iOs if I ever switched down the line.

Opposite to them you have the Samsung watch. You can get their 4th gen standard watch (https://www.box.co.uk/SM-R870NZSAEUA-Samsung-Galaxy-Watch4-44mm-Aluminum-Si_3835553.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwyNSoBhA9EiwA5aYlb0PT J6uXpi0iIEzA1Cjz3Vm2txM-69W391erOHOVxrIdsKWftmVcuRoC8hIQAvD_BwE) for a somewhat reasonable price now.
Plus of it is that as Samsung and Google play nice together you get access to all of their features and the play store for additional things. Downside is the battery life is horrid. Lucky to get a full day with all the bells and whistles on. It also only works on Android, so if I were to go iOs down the line I'd need to hand it to someone else.

Now Amazon do have a "renewed" version of the 5 pro on sale, which give it a better design and bumps up to double the battery life at least and that's there for £220, but I'm wary as it's not new and nearly £200 less than what they sell it for new.

Ah, head shaving is another thing entirely. A friend who does that said he used 4 supermarket safety razors to do the job the other day, which seemed a bit :cab:.

I did that Harry's thing but found the razors built up even with the minimum quantity/frequency, although if you are head shaving that should be less of an issue. They were good razors.

Harrys offer a free trial for the cost of delivery(£3.95). You choose which bundle you'd like, should you keep it going after your trial and they'll deliver it based on how often you tell them you shave.

I have a friend who uses them and is very happy with it. Sometimes you can find content creators with discount codes but I dont know of any right now.
Your mate not got a referral code?

If you're after convenience go cordless, but if you actually want to hoover something up get a Henry or something.

I have some sort of Tineco cordless one bought quite recently which is OK, probably better than the Dyson it replaced, but still a bit meh when it comes to picking stuff up.

I bought a Dyson for £500+ a few years ago and within 18 months it was absolutely fucked. They attempted a repair, and within months it was shit again. My wife is an expert in dealing with shit like this, so I left her to it and we ended up with a refund.

We bought a Shark to replace it, which seems alright after 2 years.

Hard to push round upstairs (better carpet) when on the top setting cos it sucks stronger than me on Szoboszlai's dick.

Wall mounted in the cupboard nicely, for maximum pleasure.

The most basic £30 one from Tesco seemed to do a superb job for me for 6 years up until this week when one of the wheels on the head broke which has now probably made it time to replace it even though it can still be used.

It really makes you appreciate the strangehold of consumerism though when you listen to these empty vessels who try and justify spending £500+ on Dysons and Mieles.

I tried to introduce one to the house to replace the wife's cool looking but ultimately shit overpriced cordless contraption, but was quickly knocked back. It found residence in the garage where I used it on the cars but then the wife saw how immaculate her footwells were so has allowed it to be used in the "problem areas" of the house: the baby's room, the landing, the stairs, the hallway, the kitchen and the conservatory.

I'd say I've won that one but there's still the £350 thingy hanging on the wall too.

Anyone know anything about those screens that supposedly act like an Android Auto/Carplay screen that connect to your existing radio and your phone? On the head of it they look like the could do exactly what's required for someone without Carplay in their car, but on the other hand I've only really seen them on Instagram ads which normally automatically screams dodgy.

Yeah one of that type. I would rather do the full head unit swap but it's a Toyota and the heater controls are on the existing screen so it'd be too much of a faff. This seemed like the next best option.

I'm in a new-ish MG at the moment and it has horrific in car controls for pretty much just about everything, but as has been highlighted upthread I genuinely couldn't believe it when I had to fuck about with menus to adjust the sodding heating. Putting myself in the mind of a Man (and it must be a Man) who'd come up with that is a challenge. We finished in car heating controls forty years ago, leave them the sod alone.

Car making is all about profit margins, cheaper to do everything from a screen than design little knobs and pay someone to screw them on. Or at least I'm guessing it is.

Ben

No doubt. Post-2020 the standard Golf has a shite interior, when they realised they can con enough people into paying for all the extras. 2012-19 it was such a lovely car, whatever spec you had.

I still have some degree of dialeage on my 2018 Sharan but the windscreen blower is absolute wank and whenever it is remotely cold there's about 2 pints of condensation inside the bastard. What causes that, is it because it has a big cabin or something and is there anyway to mitigate against it other than keeping a towel in the car?

Ben
22-11-2023, 09:41 AM
Have you had the AC serviced recently? AC drain is probably blocked, or at least partially. It's not a difficult task to clean out but involves you removing the glovebox usually.

niko_cee
22-11-2023, 09:56 AM
It was serviced last week by the dealer. Would they do that?

It's not a new problem particularly, it has always done it. Just seems to be a condensation beast.

Ben
22-11-2023, 10:08 AM
A £200 service? That's just oil and filters so no. You usually need a specialist AC servicer if you can't do it yourself. Mine has the same problem but nowhere near to your degree so I'm just ignoring it for now. It is a bit daunting taking the glovebox out if you've not done it before.

Baz

Ben
22-11-2023, 10:30 AM
You need someone who does it for a living. If it's just the drain then you're looking at less than £100 to sort it but if the condenser actually needs repairing then you're looking at closer to £400 including labour probably.

YouTube can probably help you clean your own drain so at least you can rule that bit out free of charge.
