Baz is correct.
I’ve just ordered my dad a beer advent calendar from a website called Beer-Hawk (https://adventcalendar.beerhawk.co.uk). I’ve only just discovered it but could spend a lot of money on there in the future.
There’s also a £5 off discount code xaAWJL7PFHZ (which I’m not sure if there’s a minimum spend for, so worth a try on something really cheap to test it) if anyone else likes the look of some of their stuff.
Spent the night on gin (Beefeater) and tonic. Run out of that so it's onto the Highland Park 12 until I decide it's bedtime.
Beer tomorrow, and going to buy some for my brother-in-law's birthday so I shall almost certainly get myself a decent couple too.

Bought some Cardhu Gold for £25 as a gift. Seems a pretty great price.
Also spent about £100 on gins. One bar had 108 of them and a mixologist which was great.
Got myself the Aldi version of Blue Moon.
I love Belgian White beers, like Blue Moon. Are there any other super markets with other versions of it?
Blue Moon is decent enough. I suppose the wit that you're most likely to find in the big shops is one one the Hoegaarden variants.

Whitstable Bay was on offer in the supermarket today so I cleared the shelf.
Just found a new Brewdog I've never had before in a Sainsburys in Lincolnshire called Slot Machine. Pretty nice.
Had some really good stuff when I was in Chorlton over the weekend as well, with some Marble stuff too. Lost Your Marbles and The Imp of the Perverse are in the same range as Sister Agnes, they're all just really good (though very strong) stouts. Also had a really nice stout in a Spoons near Manchester Piccadilly called Dark Side of the Moon.

Having a porter called 'Mills and Hills.' It's a collaboration between Fyne and De Molen. It's fucking smashing. Doesn't taste it's 9.5% ABV though so you could hurt yourself on it if you weren't careful.

I dunno, seems like a lot of disappointment in a box.

Unless you're keeping the box in the fridge then it couldn't be good.
Surely you'd open it in the morning and put the days bottle in the fridge until the evening?
It’s in the conservatory (check me out, Floyd) which is about 6 degrees colder than the fridge.
Well I rather like the look of that.

A Wylam / Hawkshead collaboration stout called "Pleasures in the Darkness." 11% of splendidness.
And on the subject of stouts, my homebrew got bottled today and should be good to go for Christmas. Hope it's not shit.

It should have been but when I got there the glass growler filler was broken (handle for pressure release apparently), so it's in a plastic one. Out of the 5 there's normally a couple marked PET only anyway as they are too gassy to go into the glass, so they always have a good supply of sealable plastic ones in 1l and 2l.

No more Imperial Stouts and IPAs for a bit. :(
Im going to be fragile for another day or two after forgetting Im 133 years old on Saturday night.
Yesterday’s advent calendar beer was a double chocolate stout. Plus one of the early ones was sticky toffee pudding ale. Not tried either yet.
As mentioned in the food thread (http://www.thethirdhalf.co.uk/showthread.php?49-Mahow-s-all-new-all-new-all-new-food-thread&p=238205#post238205) I was sent a package from Switzerland. It included five beers I’ve never heard of, nevermind tasted:
https://i.imgur.com/8DuC2pX.jpg
Unfortunately the one on the far right leaked so I can’t have that one, and I’ve just seen the one in the can described as “piss but piss from Home” by a Swiss person on Untappd :D, but I’m looking forward to trying them nonetheless. Especially the CHOPFAB, as it’s got good reviews.
Quite like a red ale so that one should be good, hopefully.
I've had a couple of Swiss beers. One was bang average and one was pretty decent so on average it's positive so far, I guess. The can looks like it'd be piss before opening it so no surprises there.

Maybe need some kraken as well to tramp it up to the right abv.

Thoughts on fruit beer? I had lindemans in Brussels and thought is was great.

Just drank half a bottle of red wine (Aussie Cab Sav) with lunch @ magic.
That Baz drink sounds like something we had at uni which ran one of two ways - either double vodka, double malibu, double archers, orange and black current, or singles of vodka, gin, white rum, tequila, malibu and archers with the same mixers. Dreadful stuff, but you could get pints of it for £2.50 on a Saturday night (jug for a tenner) and it was good night Vienna.

Found this in the in-laws. Smells great shame I won't be able to have a drink of it.
My step dad is a Paramedic and they had Jezza Hunt visit a few Christmas’ back. He left gifts and my step dad managed to grab a bottle of our Parliaments version of that. It was pretty good.
One of the kids at work got me some ‘larger from around the world’ set (or his parents did)

Asahi's not bad, as it goes.
I had two zero-alcohol "beers" last night. One was Becks Blue which was about as unpleasant as I expected. The Bavaria one, however, was probably about the nicest alcohol-free beer I've had. I'd probably rather have a soft drink on balance but it was so long since I'd had a non/low-alcohol beer other than a taste of the not-unpleasant Erdinger one that I thought I'd try what they had.

Bringing this thread back down to where it belongs, what's the best lager you can find at most pubs. Tight battle between San Miguel and Peroni me thinks.
Depends on the pub and what you like.
Best thing I had was the Beavertown neck oil.

If it's not next to the Carling in a spoons it's disqualified.
I suppose of the ones you can get at MOST pubs then it's Peroni or Moretti by default as usually being the one in "most pubs" that isn't filth.

Moretti? This thread is disgustingly hipster.
San Miguel or Becks are both decent staples as well.

Peroni or Smithwicks Blonde (not sure if lager).

Blonde is lager but I'd still throw it in the hipster shite pile
Moretti? This thread is disgustingly hipster.
And Peroni, at the price you normally pay, isn't hipster? I've had Moretti at a carvery in Hamilton so behave yourself.
It's also about the least hipster beer I've ever talked about in here but I have neither the beard, flatcap or lumberjack shirt so I'm exempt.
EDIT: Right, I think if we're discounting what appears to be your category of "hipster" we're left with a choice of Carling, Tennents or Fosters.
Coke, please.

Nothing about Smithwicks is hipster.
It's also not lager but let's not make his post 100% wrong. It's Christmas after all.

I'm using the dictionary definition from giggles whereby if I haven't heard of it, it's hipster.
Moretti for me.
San Miguel tastes like someone has put a cig out in it.

Family fortunes incorrect sound.
That's in most pubs round Europe.
Really? 'Un canette de blonde' = 'a pint of lager' over here.
Blondes in this case are invariably somewhere between your typical English ale and a lager. But usually not served as cold as a lager. Which means you can taste it more so it varies wildly whether that's a good thing or not.
Anyway, neither Peroni or Moretti are hipster. Certainly in Scotland they're pretty common anywhere that thinks people might like a choice beyond Tennents.
Though I was i somewhere recently that had a selection of something like Tennents, Amstel, Fosters and Carling. Bleurgh.

I didn't mind it when I was trawling around Edinburgh. Felt like a lager you could mistake for something else. That feels like most lagers to me, nowadays. Getting into some Stella for the first time in my life and I've got exactly the same sentiment.
Unless it was so cold as to actually numb your taste buds then I'm putting you down as having officially gone native. Save yourself.
It was pretty cold. Ya wee cunt.
I'm going to take cunt, there, as the term of endearment it sort-of is in Scotland.
You big softy.
San Miguel tastes like someone has put a cig out in it.
My pick for least-bad-mainstream lager is probably Amstel.
Shindig
25-12-2017, 09:09 AM
Nah, Amstel's rank to me. Still not the worst thing I've drunk though. Swedish Blonde. It's like Mike's comparison only you can see the literal ash.
Amstel is alright. The worst lager of them all is Skol, which is so shit I'm not sure you can even get it on tap.
I used to drink a lot of Cruzcampo when there was a tapas place nearby. I miss that stuff.
Dave.
25-12-2017, 11:40 AM
My favourite mainstream lager is probably San Miguel (but Estrella Damm and Cruzcampo are better when in Spain), also like Moretti, Peroni, Heineken and Stella. For the bog standard ones, Fosters is not bad and is far superior to Carlsberg and Carling (worst lager by miles).

Yeah it definitely doesn't taste the 6 or so % that it is. You'd only ever see their regular stout (black label bottle) on draught but it's still way nicer than Guinness.

There'll undoubtedly be a load in whatever your biggest local supermarket(s) is/are. It's hard to recommend without knowing what breweries you get but I'd be surprised if there aren't at least a few golden ones for you to have a crack at.

Went around a spot today called that's doing the whole show from growing right up to bottling. The stuff tastes lovely and I got a few bottles, and the smell of the hops about the place was class.
Also got given this White Hag with some other stuff by the guy as they have a shop down there as well and I have no idea what it even is.

It was quite nice. Tastes enough like beer and one you'd happily nail in a beer garden on a nice day.
The Christmas Ale I'm on now, White Hag again, is tougher going.
As I said, I'm getting into them now. I think the first one I tried was very sour which put me off, like how the first proper stout I ever tried seemed to taste like it'd been brewed inside a tyre even though I'd probably think it was at least alright these days. Nowt wrong with a fruity beer.
Onto a Swannay imperial stout now. It's pretty swish.
