£175. Blimey.I think I already said me and my brother in law are going full nerd and using the Brewdog boxes from last year to fill up a calendar for each other this year. £90 budget.
And it has to be said what I've got for him.so far is mega.
I like the "No hints included" aspect. Genuine surprise when you open it.

I’ve no doubt they’ll all be rare and expensive stuff but the more I think of it the more I’d be afraid that might mean a high ratio of spirit aged stouts. They will have some one-offs just produced for the box though going by last year though.
I wish I’d someone to make me up one like that.
Late having my first beer of the day so I'm starting off with Northern Monk's cucumber and yuzu pale. Proper tasty for a 4.2%. You could sit and tan this in a beer garden all day.

I had six pints of 'tea' tonight, but it was actually beer. God I've missed England.
Tell us the beer, you slag.

Only way to go if you find something decent.
Depends where I am. If there's loads of taps I'll keep trying stuff, if it's a pub with a handful and I know there's a clear favourite I'll stick with it.

I've had it bottled before and enjoyed it a lot.
A good bitter is magic.
It's weird how there's such a fine margin with bitter between a really nice one and "Oh this is just like every other middling bitter I've ever had."
I may have mentioned in here recently but as part of their Project Barista Siren did a coffee bitter and it actually did the impressive job of actually tasting like a bitter with a little something extra rather than "we're making a beer and bunging a load of Fuggles in it so we can pretend it's like a bitter."

Yeah someone here (Western Herd?) did one recently and it was just really generic but it went down well because it was the only one someone was doing. Wasn’t a patch on some British ones you’d find from time to time in Wetherspoons, especially when they’ve a cask on.

Don't you get a keg in every Christmas?
Jimmy Floyd

Next time I'll remember to stop drinking a drink I like and begin drinking ones I don't.
Don't you get a keg in every Christmas?
Two small ones between the family. Usually have like 2 of each max.
Maybe it’s just me being weird but I try to get a different pint everytime if I’m out, to try. Obviously I wouldn’t switch from ale to Fosters though.
Jimmy's not a wanker like us though.
I'm with you though for the most part. Or at least I am if there's new stuff to try. If it's a load of stuff I've had before I'll just stick with whatever my preferred one is.

I hold out hope that The Atlantean gets the same treatment, but I think I bought all of that first time around when the stock was new and on promotion.
Had a Dark Star limited edition yesterday which was decent. Cali IPA, can't recall the name, something spacey.

I brewed an American Amber today due to a big lack of them on the market here. Some of my hops were gone off I think so the combo isn’t completely what I wanted but hopefully be supping it this day week.
Talk to me about those Perfect Draft things.
Anyone got/used one? Any good?
I've got the SUB and it's decent but doesn't work out cheaper and takes an age to cool so I've barely used it.

My local offie is full of the kegs for them and apparently they sell really well. Mostly German stuff.
So I'm drinking this:
https://www.tremblingmadness.com/Staggeringly-Good-I-Didnt-Ask-for-a-Monster-Toffee-Apple-Fruit-Beer-p414566532
A "toffee apple cinnamon fruit shake sour."
They've somehow managed to combine the fresh, sharp fruit of a sour with the sort of warm, spiced, rich things you'd expect in a big thick wintery ale. With lactose, for the "shake" part. I've no idea how they've married those things together and I suspect it'll be a very marmite beer depending on your taste. I ordered it half expecting to hate it but I really, really like it.
Scrapped the idea of perfect draft machine. Gonna look up those mini kegs for this year instead.
Giggles
14-11-2021, 07:34 AM
You can buy a dispenser for those mini kegs now that take a CO2 cartridge and keep the keg cool too. Means you don’t have to empty it in a couple of evenings.
This is one that a local place here does but I’d say they’re widely enough available.

Okay so day 1:
I got him New Bristol Irish Coffee & Vanilla Ice-Cream Affogato Christmas Stout.
He got me a Loch Lomond Elevator Pitch an NEIPA. He says I've definitely won and I'd agree but a) he's actually rated the stout and a little higher than I have and b) this is is a good sessionable NEIPA but could do with a less watery finish.
I see Brewdog got off to a blazing hot start...
Day 2:

I think for my personal tastes I've won again today, though I suspect he might like his more than I like mine. I do enjoy a To Ol though so should be good.
What've Brewdog given you, Baz ?
Got myself a pack of chocolate hazelnut porters. Hope they're food.

I'm quite pleased with it, to be honest. Something I'd actually choose myself and not some watered down boring piss like yesterday. It's not amazing like, but it's new to me.
Semi-related but those Tony's Chocolonely bars are a nightmare to eat. Just make the segments square, dammit.
Yeah that's solid, I like that one.
Personally, I'd say the one you picked sounds better than the one you received, but I'd be glad of either.
I find chilli beers veeeeery hit or miss, that's all. I love Fierce though so it's entirely possible it's ace.
Siren's chilli beer in this year's Caribbean Chocolate Cake set was lovely because it sort added a bit of heat where you'd get the warmth from barrel aging, say, rather than I BET YOU'D LIKE TO TASTE SOME CHILLI IN YOUR BEER EH?

Siren's Death by Caribbean Chocolate Cake beer is the highest rated beer on Untappd, albeit with only 526 ratings. 4.10 out of 5.0
That's not the chilli one but the the Death By is among my highest rated. It's absolutely superb.

La Trappe, if anyone knows it. It’s grand but just very Belgian.
I do like a La Trappe but Belgian golden ales are a bit like English bitters in that while there are some very, very nice ones a lot of them just sort of roll into the one identical beer.

Quite jealous of recent goings on in here. I've been off the beer for a while but just cracked open a Murk-Life Balance Hazy Pale from Magic Rock which is pretty average. 3.6, not great not terrible.
The calendar is comfortably the nerdiest beer-thing I've partaken in. Fun though. I never did mixtapes in my youth so I never relate to people talking about putting one together but for the amount of time I spent deciding on the order for my brother-in-law's calendar (don't bunch all the best ones together, don't put the same styles together, etc.) I feel like I at least get it a bit now. :D
I was gonna put this:

As the last beer in his but bottled it in case he has an incorrect opinion and thinks it's weird so I've gone for that as the penultimate beer and gone for a very good but safer bet for the 24th.
This People Like Buns is not quite as good as the original version of it I had but it's still rather tasty.

Had a quick google to make sure the fierce beer you were talking about is the same one I walk past on my wander to the gym. It is, turns out they’re bigger than I credited.
Remember going to that bar not long after it opened and thinking it was pretty crap, even for beer. Situated right beside a brew dog bar too.
Having a bottle of Bayreuther Hell. Pretty tasty lager.
Punk IPA today :moop:
Good to get it out early, I guess, on the proviso there are no repeats.
Presumably regular Lost Lager and Hazy Jane still await. From the other basics, I actually really like Elvis Juice and Clockwork Orange so they will considered good days.
The other 17 better be some “oooooh fancy that” moments. Like I’ve ever never had that Layer Cake that I see in supermarkets, and I reckon that’s definitely in there. Hoping for plenty I didn’t even know existed though.
And I guess there’s worse beers to sup during MOTD than Punk IPA (such as Lost Lager). :sorry:

The layer cake is decent, although usually in bigger cans. Do you get those in the calendar?
Calendar fits 440mls and I think Brewdog do give you some of those.

I'm 99.9% sure that while I was disappointed last year there were no doublers.
The layer cake is decent, although usually in bigger cans. Do you get those in the calendar?
Yeah like Ian said, there are some taller 440ml in there, cos that’s what Day 2s was.
So for my last order TM had some.ofnrhe Amundsen Dessert in a Cans vastly reduced. I'm glad I haven't spent the regular price on some of these. Amundsen do some mega beers but the balance on some of these is way out. That said the "White Chocolate S'mores" one was waaaay better than I expected.

And a 330ml can to add insult to injury.
I had a yuzu and cucumber beer by Northern Monk and it was really drinkable but the yuzu was possibly doing the heavy lifting there.

Also the Fierce Beepa was very decent.
The answer is it's it that close to a milk stout but it's a solid effort and I could happily sink a few of these.
I walked past a Fierce bar in Manchester today. Is Fierce local or is it just a coincidence? I didn’t go in cos I was with non-REAL ALE drinkers.

Think I still have some sort of smoked imperial by Beak in the UK fridge from last christmas which I haven't been able to bring myself to drink on my various visits since.
I suppose it can work when it's up against a sweetness, but as with Whisky, as soon as smoke [or peat] enter the fold then it's a bit of a struggle.
With beer I need a bit of sweetness as well, yeah.
Same with whisky I guess.

Mikeller Hallo Ich Bin raspberry berliner. Not often I would do fruit in a beer, but then again I never really count these as beer so it’s a pleasant enough drink.

I haven't had anything by Cold Town before. There's a pub in town which does their stuff but only a pale and the lager and whenever I've been in they've had more interesting stuff on.
This is decent though. Not amazing but for a sub-5%er it's pretty solid.

I just cannot put away the beer anymore. Red wine was always about my 10th favourite drink but it's my default go-to now for being just about the least likely thing to give me manky hangovers.

Yeah, I'm as surprised as you, it used to be the absolute worst for me as well. Probably cus when I was at my lowest ebb in Norwich I was getting trashed off fucking co-op brandy all the time, so I probably trained my body to deal with the tannins or something.

It's pretty nice. I suppose I must've had something with Enigma hops in before but I don't remember. They seem to give a bit of a raspberry flavour which is nice. Oats in there too to smooth it out which I'm a big fan of in a pale these days.
Got a bottle of Efes Draft from Home Bargain of all places.
Also day 17 finally delivered the salted pecan caramel stout thingy.
Was that the Velvet Cake? And if so how is it?
Roaster Coaster remains a belter of a beer. Nitros are good anyway but this is just the tastiest thing.

Beak Oopla Imperial Stout, been knocking about in the fridge since last Christmas, not sure why I've not tried it sooner, it's decent. Think I feared peaty/smokiness but that was misplaced. Finished myself off with this (https://www.tremblingmadness.co.uk/?store-page=Vocation-Naughty-and-Nice-Salted-Caramel-Stout-p418032266), also good although I was struggling towards the end. Maybe a bit too sweet. Maybe too many trips to the 8% barrier.

Especially for half five in the evening.
I remember once going into town to meet a friend for lunch but we were going to the pub first. We agreed on a craft place in town and I walked in, roasting and gasping for a beer as it was an actual nice summer's day in Glasgow. Walked in having fully intended to get a pint of some sort of pale or lager but saw a lovely sounding 12% stout and went "oooh yes I'll have one of those." Of course it was gone in about 15 minutes. A foolish start to proceedings.

Punk's decent enough, but doesn't fare well if you've been drinking more well made/flavoursome beers in the run up to consuming it. I was left with a bunch after drinking all the Christmas good stuff last year and it took me a while to taste anything from it.
On the subject of Christmas stuff, I got a few siren's, a Caribbean Pancake White Porter and some sort of stout thing. Both very decent. Think I have a mole one in the fridge and a few other things from Attic(?) brewing who made a decent pale.

Don't expect anything too "crafty", they're basically nicer versions of Guinness and Kilkenny but that's a very good thing.
The red isn't much more than fine but it's super drinkable. Very smooth (which is a given with a nitro, really) and pretty clean tasting.
I know the answer is no but Giggles have tried “Forged Irish Stout” that Conor McGregor does? Apparently it’s only available in The Black Forge Inn in Dublin, for now.
His whiskey is meant to be rancid, but this looks lovely and creamy.

It was like that here for ages but there's been a big push lately on other stuff and with such a saturated market (over 90 breweries for somewhere so small) there's some really good stuff landing. The IPA's and pales are still the bread and butter for most of them but it's letting them do a bit more. My go-to place just recently doubled their fermenter capacity (sue to the sales of their two IPA's) so they can do more lagers and are currently building a new brewery on site to do some wild and mixed stuff.

You say you're in Pennsylvania these days, Pepe?
Voodoo's a brewery I had a good one from a few years ago. 'Wynona's Brown Ale', if it's available to you anywhere / they still do it.
Is there a good website that'll deliver? There are loads of dark American beers I've had and still see semi-regular even over here.
Just checked, and Voodoo is not too far from here. Might have to check it out some time.
I am sure I can find good stuff online. I just miss being in St. Louis and having a nice beer store that carried basically everything nearby. Over here there is just the supermarket, which has the generic shite you can expect and not a lot more, or individual breweries, which I do not visit that often since Covid. Not because I want to isolate or anything, I just lost the habit entirely.
I'll go check what I can find online.

Loooove this.
Also had a sour earlier with tonka beans in it. Never had anything other than a stout with those in so didn't know how it'd work but it was really good.
Out of interest: because of burny alcohol taste or because you're a beer-manlet? Because taste-waste this (as with many other impys these days) really doesn't taste it.
Didn't realise you were a fucking pussy.
I'm going to need some time to process this.
My alcohol stamina is definitely the lowest it has ever been. I just had two beers and I think that is all I am willing to take. Fuck hangovers.
I take after my dad in that I currently don't get proper hangovers almost regardless of what I drink. Not the way other people get them.
But I also remember when he went from being genuinely fine the morning after a skinful to saying "N-no.... I'm not hungover I just like... I have a headache and I'm a bit nauseous."
That's a fucking hangover, old man.
So I know my time will come.

I used to think I really disliked high alcohol too until I copped it was always those strength beers they put spirits into and it was that taste I hated.
I have no special issue with those (there's a finer line between them being good and overdone, but broadly any style of beer can be good or bad) but I do know what you mean. That tiramisu one I posted above isn't "boozy" in that way. Like there's no real taste of spirits to it or anything, it's just strong.
I mean I don't think you'd like it anyway because I think you're much more about the traditional flavours for your porters and stouts but I agree that when you get, say, a bourbon barrel aged one and it just tastes of weird bourbon it's a bad time.
Those with whiskey in them are atrocious.
I've had some really nice ones of those and some really horrific ones. If the balance is right and it's basically just a bit of sweetness and warmth (maybe a bit of smokiness if it's aged with Islay or something) it can be fucking mega. But you need the basic beer flavour to still be coming through.

I’m gonna try my hand at making some mead, after discussing it for the 100th time with a bloke from work yesterday.
Undecided whether my first batch should just be plain honey, or should I add some fruit to the mix. Any fruit suggestions welcomed.
Previously he’s done cherry, raspberry, blackberry, cinnamon & fig, and some others I’ve forgot. I was thinking pineapple but obviously it’s already super sweet cos of the honey, so not sure.
I haven't had a lot of mead but would it work with something citrusy to cut through the sweetness a little? I assume that's similar to what some of the berry ones will do as they'll be a bit tart.

Worked for me, although I didn't click the links.
Might try and create a few more accounts.

Yeah, worked again. :hat:
How many cans does the opening link get you?
We both get £5 off an order, apparently.
Also what’s your gripe? I alerted people to a bargain, so so what if I benefit?

Can the accounts have the same address? (Not that I can order anyway).

No real gripe, though I think people rather when someone is up front.

I used the same delivery address, name and everything, just different emails. I guess that's the bribe, they get your subscriber data in exchange for some cheap beer. Probably not a good trade really but oh well.

Just had a Bluestone Al Fresco Hazy IPA which was decent, if a little on the sour spectrum for me, and a Gras & Graan [Brouwerij de Molen] which sold itself as 'Crystal NEIPA-ish', but definitely had what I would call a classically Belgian flavour. It was rather good.
I have been on decent but interesting pales so far. Siren are mega though so an unremarkable beer from them is still invariably very drinkable.

You've tempted me to crack open a Lumina.

I've had this before and having it tonight. It is mega.
Got a Siren darks box and it has two of these in it.

Yeah but your traditional Dutch beer (and French to an extent and probably other neighbouring countries) definitely have some shared traits with Belgian, which is the go-to comparison.
Do love a De Molen though.

It's actually fucking gorgeous.
In terms of drinkability ABV means basically nothing in the hands of a good brewery these days.
What've you got?
The Nitro Broken Dream is beautiful stuff.

Their stuff is readly available here in Martins in the capital. I'll keep an eye out.
I'm sure I've said this before but I spent quite a long time sort of taking Siren for granted. They're rightly among my favourite breweries now.

I never liked their really weird takes on stout but the basic ones are better than anywhere.
Yeah the Bones of a Sailor I mentioned earlier is basically just them making the best standard porter they can. No frills, no fancy flavours, and very good.

Another banger.
My free Hazy Jane arrived, so just opened one.
I might need to get in about this: https://www.sirencraftbrew.com/item/768/SirenCraftBrew/9th-Anniversary-Beer-Cheese-Pairing.html
Had a rare trip to Sainsburys this morning so treated myself to Fierce Maple Pancake and Tiny Rebel Pineapple Express IPA.

Picked up some Paulaner Müncner Hell, nice enough.
I've started off with an apple saison from The Kernel and it's very decent.
